Why is Self Destruct Button considered good?

Recommended Posts

I've looked at a bunch of past threads concerning Self Destruct Button, and most people seem to think it is a good card. However, the decklists I've seen all appear to try to force three Draws as fast as possible using Wall of Revealing Light, Inspection, etc. The following two points come to mind:

1) Winning one Duel and quickly forcing two Draws seems easier than trying to win two Duels out of three in a Match. However, the decklists I've seen don't seem to aim for a win on the first Duel, so this doesn't seem to apply.

2) Forcing three Draws causes a Sudden Death Duel where the first player to inflict damage wins the Match. This can be abused easily with burn cards (even lolSparks) but the decklists I've seen don't seem to focus on that either.

Anything to clarify this?

Whoever told you SDB was a good card was an idiot.

Technically, if the three matches come to a draw, the outcome is usually determined by RPS, not by "Sudden Death" or whatever you called it.

But still, SDB is horrid card design, shouldn't exist, and anyone who runs SDB shouldn't exist.

I just looked back at 2 SDB threads and the whole time everyone was calling it bad and wiithepeople a moron. :S

What is with all these alt game enders? The answer is the same, ban them all.

Except Vennominaga cuz, you know, it's actually fair.

YCM's general opinion:

It's bad because it reduces player interaction, just like Countdown and Exodia.

People should play Decks that give your opponent a fair chance, like Inzektor for +4s or Windup so that they start without a hand.

Thought it would be nice to summarize this. This, however, is NOT my opinion.

I hope you didnt imply that inzektor and wind ups are fine by YCM standards.

They arent.

Because those decks are so important when Rabbit and Chaos Drags are still the best decks.

SDB is infinitely inferior to Exodia and Countdown anyway, those decks can actually win, and the decks it is used in are less consistent. s:

Chaos Dragons are even worse than Wind-Ups and certainly not on par with Inzektors. They are just overrepresented because they're cheap to make.

Anyone who intentionally sets out to play for a draw is ultimately a loser.

You should always set out for two things - to win and to have fun. Don't treat winning as the be all and end all to be achieved at any costs (that's for real fighting and other exceptions), but always try one hundred percent to win. If its not enough, its not enough. Accept loses with good grace if beaten by the better duelist, grit your teeth grin and bear it if you were beaten by a lucksacking troll. And always make sure at the end of the duel that both you and your opponent had fun regardless of who wins and loses.

I guess this is why North Academy never beats Duel Academy Central.

You've never read Sirlin's article on playing to win, have you?

Oh yeah. I couldn't claim to be a professor at central. I hold my hands up and admit I'm not good at this game and I don't win very often. But I always play to win, and do it a way that is fun. I get beaten; well done, excellent duel, thank you very much. I win; holy s*** I actually won with this, awesome, thanks for the duel.

At the end of the day, it's a freaking card game. Not for the fate of the world or for souls or any of the anime crap. Not for a living or a dependable source of income. Not for anything remotely serious, other than maybe local acknowledgement/adulation for those who compete in locals. Just for fun. Opponent is presumably often going to be the same. It's just a past-time which should be enjoyed. Obviously you should still try to win, it is a contest, why on earth enter a contest and not try to win? But I think there are different ways of winning, and to win without having fun makes it... rather pointless...

How anyone can find sitting behind a wall and stalling, lowering your own life points, then activating this for a draw, in any way fun I find mind-boggling.

Obviously I've never even heard of Sirlin. But whatever it is it sounds tasty, I'll have mine medium-rare thanks.
