Happy Birthday Thar. Why you no tell us it was your birthday?

I just purchased GTA V.

One of my friends at college has it and he's been bringing it along with his PS3 to the area were our club meets so everyone can take turns "going wild" on it or just playing through missions.

I go wild on GTA. I don't care about missions, or really watching people play missions. Watching people play missions is one of the most boring things you can do in regards to GTA. I know there is a story this time around, a good one too, but I'd rather see people just going ape sh*t.

Like I do.

Every time I get the controller I just have Trevor run around and randomly knock the sh*t out of people with a flying hay maker (XD)

It is completely worth it. No matter how many times I fail to get into the military base and get shot down. The flying hay maker to the back of a hooker's head always cheers me up!

Also, Fusion. Skype. Now!

If your looking to cut something out, cut out GTA5, you'll get bored of it eventually anyway.

Aside from that, your basically doing what I'm doing now except without being part of the military on top of it.

Also, Happy Birthday Thar, and a Merry Shut Up to you too.

Well, I'm not gonna do that considering I just put down $60 for it.

But if I prioritize beating that, then I can put it aside for a while and make more room that way.

...just in time for Pokémon Y.

Also, happy birthday Thar!

My friend found the cheat to raise your star level, it's hilarious seeing him getting absolutely owned by all the helicopters and kamikaze cop cars.

I haven't played as Trevor yet, but I'm looking forward to it.

I would, but I should hit the sack, got an early class tomorrow.

I need to find the cheats and memorize them so that when I play the game again I can use them.

I haven't played as Trevor yet, but I'm looking forward to it.

Trevor is awesome. I've seen my friend literally jump out of a blimp with him, no parachute, and somehow survive without a single cheat code. Trevor is also bat sh*t crazy, which is why I like him.

Well whenever you have the time . . . I seriously need to talk to you.

And a happy f*ck you to you as well, in a good way, but not THAT good of a way.

Happy Birthday Thar. Why you no tell us it was your birthday?

Cause it's not that important, really. I'm not too attentive towards others knowing I'm a year older.

It's funny you mention GTA 5 and my birthday, because I got $65 from my parents just for that. I'll be getting it tomorrow.

Who here plays Magic the Gathering?

I do... well, I prefer it over Yu-Gi-Oh!, at least. I don't play as often as I used to, and I'm way behind as a result. Though, I never found any reason to throw money at decks and packs to catch up.

Why?

Well I asked because that is the most often played card game at my college. In fact, it is the ONLY card game played at my college. Because of that I had to polish off my old magic decks and put them to the test against those who've remained hardcore "magicians".

So let's just get the obvious out of the way and have me admit my old magic decks got the sh*t beat out of them.

Then everything changed when I bought more new cards, roughly $60 worth over the past two weeks.

I actually beat one of our top players in a single turn.

EDIT:

On a side note I met some more LARPers when I was buying groceries. They have a zombie apocalypse style rpg that I might join.

That's power creep for ya.

Power creep? I do not know this phrasing . . . explain . . .

Just like Yu-Gi-Oh!, just better, and not as hyped or fan-serviced, which I like.

Yu-Gi-Oh! just moves too d*mn fast for me to keep up. It's like every few weeks they introduce an entire new pack with 100+ new cards.
Magic I've learned recycles cards and reprints cards so that the old ones no one likes don't get made again but the cards people like do. They introduce some new cards every so often, but they're still subjected to being dropped due to lack of popularity.

Also the game gets revamped every so often so that certain text makes sense. For instance I have a card that couldn't be blocked unless the opponent had another black creature on the field. I didn't know that meant he had the ability "Intimidate".

Also the art is better, flavor is more variable and realistic, and the storyline is much more interesting.

I actually had my vampire magic deck beaten by a guy who used the actual angel that, in the lore, was created to destroy vampires. So the match was funny in a 'round-about way. I couldn't even be mad for loosing when I learned that interesting little fact.

It's when the power of cards gradually increase in each pack to the point where eventually the standards for card strength increase with it.

Ah.

Well that wasn't what happened with our match. I was playing a Goblin deck, managed to get out ten goblins, then used a spell twice that let me peg him for 10 damage each. So I effectively beat him with no attacks and two spells.

Yeah... Dot play Magic. I've heard the argument "It's a lot less complicated than Yugioh" or "It's easier to understand." I call bull. I've seen this game played before. A few times. The guys were throwing around all these spells and creatures. Yeah, it's pretty similar. I understand yugioh fine. I've kept up to date with it. I did not understand half of what these guys were doing. So, yeah. How's that "It's easy to understand" plan coming along?

I can agree, it's pretty hard to understand at first. But once you know what "mana" is and how to use it, you catch on pretty quick, cause that's basically what the entire game is based around. Only other thing is the slight curve in mechanic terminology. Get that under your sleeve, play a few games, and you're pretty much good to go. Heck, I've been playing for about 3 years now, and I'm still learning new things.

Well with Magic, to avoid those situations Tournaments only allow the latest 2-3 decks/packs to be used. It's a way to negate the Power Creep effect.

Well one of my friends told me, when I brought out an old card, that the rules actually state that in a situation where the card text contradicts the rules . . . the card text overrules the . . . well . . . rules.

But that is for standard play I'm sure, as I doubt any tournament official would allow very old cards with outdated effects to be entered. Either way that doesn't matter to me since I never go to any tournaments at all. I just play at my college.

Like Thar said, once you get to know what mana is and how to use it, you can catch on pretty quick.

Some of the terminology does get confusing at times, like Thar I'm still learning some more of it myself, but it's not so difficult once you get used to it. Instant cards are in Magic what Quick-Play Spells are in Yu-Gi-Oh; Sorcery is akin to Normal Spells; Enchantments are akin to everything from Equip Spells to Continuous Spells as well.

Magic just doesn't have trap cards or anything akin to it

You know, I'm kind of hoping Flame Dragon comes in and joins the conversation since I KNOW he plays Magic.

Hard not to when he's been the Nicol Bolas fanboy ever since I joined the site.

I haven't ever played the game myself outside of the PS3 game that came out not long ago, but I got a nice feel out of it. It's really not difficult to understand so as long as you forget everything you know about other card games.

It's also helpful to have someone who knows the terminology to explain effects.

Who here plays Magic the Gathering?

kinda do, but not really.

All of my main friends at college play MtG a lot and enjoy it heavily (and so does Cortez). So I basically only play with them and pick up a little understanding here and there, but I never latched onto it as much as I did YGO.

Though I can agree it's objectively the best TCG out there.

I think the ONLY reason I never latched onto Magic like I did Yugioh was because

  1. Yugioh was made WHEN I was a child
  2. Magic wasn't
  3. I knew no one who played Magic

However now that I've played both games enough that I can compare them I can say without a doubt that out of all of the games that I've played, from Yugioh to Duel Masters and even Zatch Bell's card game, I think that Magic is hands down the best. It has enough diviance to make it so that anyone can play, rules that are quick to get a hold of, and a base management that they don't have to change up how the game is played.

Magic has always had certain types of cards, though they might be called different things in each era.

Yugioh on the other hand had Ritual Monsters, then Fusion monsters, then they included Synchro Monsters and then they got crazy with Assault Mode Syncro Monsters . . . now you have XYZ Monsters . . .

I mean, it's all too much in too little of time.

Magic has it down and is for hardcore players. Yugioh just seems to be trying to think of new cards just to sell new cards for profit.

I can respect your opinion on that. YGO constantly reinventing things isn't necessarily my main gripe, but rather the fact they kinda have to from what I understand of the few times I've lurked TCG.

It'd be interesting if they made an alternate sequel series to Duel Monsters (the original anime), but with updated cards that also more closely follows the metagame.

And it they had a protag that wasn't invincible for once.

And yeah, that sh*t's dope.

I'm going to break my tradition of making one game my main; I will play both X and Y in a row and give equal devotion.

I think I'll go Chespin and Charmander for X, then Fennekin and Squirtle for Y.

Y'all are talking about how an awesome new DS game is coming out while I'm STILL regretting trading in my DS...

The only time I can even HOPE to get another handheld console is when I get my degree and start working for above minimum wage.

On the subject of games, is anyone else with GTA 5 very frustrated with the inability to get onto GTA Online? I mean, it came out just yesterday, and the popularity caused an overload, but goddammit I wanna get on.
