Oh, well pretty much:
I - 1
V - 5
X - 10
L - 50
C - 100
D - 500
M - 1000
If you put a lower number behind a larger one, say IX, the larger number will be decreased by the amount of the smaller number. So IX is 9. And if a lower number is in front of a larger one, the larger number will be increased by the amount of the smaller number. So XI is 11. If you put the same number, the same thing happens. So XX is 20.
You can only ever have three roman numerals in a row. Unless you're going to like, 5000 or something. But having something like DDD is pointless, because you could have MD instead to get 1500.

Hopefully that's a good explanation.
