III's brow furrowed as the storm surrounded his cards, but one of them flipped up. "I activate the Quick-Play Spell, Forbidden Lance," he stated. "This card reduces the ATK of one monster by 800 ATK for the turn, but in addition, the targeted monster is immune to the effects of Spell or Traps for this turn," he concluded, a lance materializing in Xenoform's claw. (ATK: 2100 -> 1300).

The remaining card disintegrated with no resistance, and III gazed towards Palir calmly, expecting even more from his turn. If one were to destroy his Spells or Traps, he was sure to be planning something bigger.

Leon ran up to Amber, hugging her with joy, lifting her off her feet - "Wow Amber, way to go! I almost thought you were going to lose Zebulos, but it seems as you can't lose a single duel, right?" - Leon soon became embarrassed, lifting Amber, so he let her go - "Sorry, I might have gotten too excited..." Leon then looked at Amber's new card... - "M...Number? A Malefic Number card? I've never seen cards like that...It might be dangerous to use this card Amber...besides, you'd need a Field Spell to use it...and the only field for Beast-Warrior Types is Forest, which is no good really."

"Your holder is so nice! Well, you are her Number after all, it was a given that she is as good a person as you." - Sonya giggled.

"We should get moving, we have 3 Heart Pieces each! We are getting closer, and you still need that second Number to fight 89, right?" - Leon grabbed Amber's hand, and smiled as they started walking.

"Straight Joker."
"What's with the formalities? Didn't I tell you to call me Sonya?"
"Shut up, this is important."
"Sigh...what now?"
"What do you think would happen if Amber lost to another holder, or a hunter? She would lose Zebulos, and she wouldn't have a Number..."
"Yes, so?"
"I want her to be your holder if that happens."
"Wh...U-Understood, Master."

The fierce hurricane swept both Palir's and III's spell and trap cards off the field, after III's spell card activated. Normal Summon... "Karakuri Soldier mdl 236 Nisamu"(ATK1400/DEF200/Lv.4). "Karakuri Soldier"'s effect... It must attack... each turn if able. "Karakuri Soldier" attacks... "OOPArts Crystal Xenoform". When the card had been Summoned, a mechanical infantryman rose from the ground, and appeared to be made of wooden paneling and wooden clockwork. That infantryman was now rushing towards the weakened alien, moving forward as if it couldn't stop itself.

"OOPArts Crystal Xenoform's effect!" III announced, extracting a card from beneath the black Xyz card. The crystalline creature on the Field drew one of the orbitting spheres towards its body, absorbing it into the reflective orb on its chest. "This turn, by giving up one Overlay Unit, Xenoform cannot be destroyed by battle!" III explained.

The being twirled its lance, but the Soldier got past its guard. Even so, the creature stood its ground and the reflective orb fired a small bolt of energy towards Palir. "Furthermore, all Battle Damage involving it is instead dealt to my opponent," III continued, almost smirking.

"I know it might be dangerous.. But it's not like I was really planning to use this card, But if someone else even sees this card they'll want the card that would allow them to summon it as well.."

"That was good thinking, the last thing we need is to become the hunted..."
"Hey Zebulos.. Did you feel something.. strange before...?"
"Like what Amber?"
"I feel like something has gone horribly wrong.."
"Are you concerned... About Seth?"
"Yeah... I think something is wrong... I don't know what it is... but I..."
"Try not to worry about it M'lady... Whatever happens, we will free him from 89... I promise you."

As Amber and Leon walked along, Amber reached into her pocket and took her heart pieces in hand as she examined them.

"Hmm... I guess now is a good time to see if any of my pieces fit together... Lets see... " Amber tried to compare the pieces by overlapping and flipping them over. Hmm.. it looks like these two middle pieces match. but this on does seem to fit either way. Oh well.."

"Sonya... May I speak with you privately..?" Said Zebulos as he blocked Amber from hearing. "It's important, and I don't want either of these two to really know about it."

The bolt of energy hit Palir's foot, causing him to jump a little. (Palir LP: 2200) Studying his cards, he did the only thing left at this point. Turn end. He looked at III, who appeared smug over how that battle had gone. Too bad Karakuri have to attack. Ought to have looked at what his card could do before I Normal Summoned, but what's done is done. I may have no choice but to use... that at this point, even if that's exactly what he wants me to do. He looked around, slightly distracted, and wondered what had been happening in the duel between the female stranger and Aivea nearby.

"It doesn't fit!?" - Leon grabbed Amber's pieces himself and pressed them together, effectively, one of them didn't fit the frame - "Well shoot. That's bad luck, my pieces fit all together..." - Leon gave the Heart to Amber, and searched for his own in his backpack. When he grabbed it he got an idea; he snapped one of the Heart Pieces and tried to fit it in Amber's Heart - "Mmm...yes! Done!" - the Heart Piece fit perfectly. Leon then grabbed the Heart Piece that Amber couldn't fit and fit it into his own Heart Frame - "There, now we both have 3 Pieces into our frames!"

"Z-Zebulos? Is everything okay?" - Sonya did the same as Zebulos, blocking Leon from hearing - "Now it's safe, they won't hear us. What's bothering you so much that you can't tell Amber?I want to tell you something too...after you."

"Hey! Leon!?" Amber shouted as he grabbed her pieces "What are you?"

But when Leon showed that their misfit pieces had fit into each other's hear frames, She smiled "So we're Trading pieces? that's pretty cool, and strangely convenient. C'mon Leon! Lets get going and see if we can find the rest of our pieces!"

Zebulos let out a deep sigh as his spirit approached Sonya's, He looked tired, and concerned.

"Something has gone very wrong.. Amber's friend Seth, I can barely feel his presence.. fear that Number 89 has taken full control of his mind now. Amber is not yet aware of this fact, and I don't think it would be wise to tell her.. That.. and I am starting to grow tired.. Even that last battle has taken it's toll on me. I don't think I would be able to protect her at this point, from any number.." Zebulos took Number 2 by her hands, and looked her in the eye "Sonya, if anything were to happen, you and Leon are the only ones I can trust. Do you understand where I'm getting at Sonya.."

"Sigh...where should we go now?" - As they walked, Leon saw a man with a hooded sweatshirt lying on the ground, examining his deck. (NPC) A slight aura surrounded him; a Number, but not a very powerful one. Not at all really - "That man has a Number too...should we? I leave this one to you, I can't handle three Numbers." - Leon started walking, as the man looked up to them.

"What do you want kids? I'm busy...unless you have some Heart Pieces for me..." - the man stood up and lowered his hood. It was a bald man, with a scar all along his face and a big, brown beard - "Who shall be my next victim? Is it this precious little angel?" - he looked at Amber, smiling creepily.

"Zebby..." - as Zebulos spoke, Sonya's eyes started to fill with tears. When he took Sonya by the hands, she blushed and let out a slight moan - "You don't have to worry about anything, Zeb. Leon already spoke to me about this before, if something...were to happen to...to you...he would take care of Amber, and I would become her Number. He says he will protect Amber's life before his own...he really likes her, you know that? I've never seen him as happy as now, with Amber. And still...you... - Sonya couldn't hold it anymore, she wrapped her arms around Zebulos, and started crying with her face on his chest - "Don't say that kind of stuff, you idiot! Nothing bad will happen to you, you hear me!? I won't allow it!"

"My turn, draw!" III stated, drawing his card and glancing at it. "I activate Light of Redemption!" he stated, sliding a card into his Disk, the Spell appearing before him. "By giving up 800 of my Life Points, I can add one of my banished LIGHT monsters to my hand, and I choose my banished OOPArts Golden Shuttle."

(III LP: 2600)

A beam of light fired into the sky, creating a void. From that void, III's golden rocket-shaped monster flew out, dissolving into a card. "I Normal Summon OOPArts Golden Shuttle!"

The spaceship immediately reappeared, doing an aerial flip before hovering in front of III. (Lvl 4, 1300/1400)

"And I activate Golden Shuttle's effect! Once per turn, all OOPArts gain one Level!" III continued, the level star indicator on his monster's display increasing to 5. (Lvl 4->5)

"And because I control an OOPArts monster, I can Special Summon OOPArts Moai in DEF!" III continued, a stone monster looking like a head sculpture appeared alongside his other monsters. (Lvl 5, 1800/1600)

He gazed carefully at Palir, then extended his arm. "I Overlay my 2 Level 5 monsters!" Like before, the two monsters in question glowed, dissolving into spheres of light that rose into the air, entwining themselves together as a portal appeared on the Field. Unlike the earlier Xyz Summon, this portal contained a galaxy with star clusters. The two beams fired into the portal and it exploded outwards, showering the field with even more sparks and light.

"Xyz Summon! Appear now, Number 33: OOPArts Superweapon Machu Mach!"

From out of the dazzling lights, the stylized blue number "33" was the first sight, followed by what it was attached to: A massive stone island, upon which rested an enormous castle. This one island towered over the rest of the Field, considered enormous even by Duel Monsters standards. (Rank 5, 2400/1500)

III realized how incredibly short-sighted the move had been a moment after it was too late. He blinked, hesitating and chancing a glance around. He hadn't been under any urgency to play his ace monster so soon, least of all under these circumstances. The arrival of his Number was almost sure to gather way too much attention. If they were normal Number holders or rival hunters, that wouldn't be a big deal, but to play his Number just moments after re-meeting Dr. Faker...III shook these thoughts away.

"I play one card facedown," he said, a facedown materializing behind his Xenoform. If I attack his Karakuri, it'll switch to Defense and just Summon another Karakuri from his Deck. I won't deal him any damage, and he'll be able to block my second attack as well. All I'll accomplish is to fill his Graveyard. But that may change next turn...

"Turn End!"

"Yo, this is whack!" Atsuko exclaimed into her D-Gazer. "Why cantcha telly my F**kin' Miracles Deck here?"
"For the last time, Miss Fudo, there's some heavy ionic interference in the atmosphere where you are." A man with glasses, a trilby hat and brown coat, and a charcoal plaid shirt replied on the other end, running the bridge of his nose in frustration. "We're barely able to keep this channel static-free."
"Come on, Links! You're the captain of our lil' ship! Cantcha do somethin'?"
[color: #8b4513]"Fine..." The man stepped offscreen for a few moments, then reappeared. "It appears as if the interference is local. Shut it down somehow, and I can teleport you your 'special deck'." He purposely used air quotes to emphasize how totally not special it was.
"L-Dawg, you the shizzle! Word out!" She shut off the communique and ran towards the huge storm.

High above the planet's surface, a huge green ship with a giant "V" on the front circled the Earth in utter silence. Aboard it, that same man pounded his head into a console gently. "Itsu..." He groaned. "Why am I doing this?"

Meanwhile, Chris was continuing to look around, until he spotted a young woman with black hair. "Hola!" He cried out to her. "How many Heart Pieces do you have?"

Palir staggered backwards as Number 33 was Summoned. Not only thrown by its sheer size, but also by its power, Palir began to contemplate his next move. III had left his searcher in play, which was probably the best move for him, but not for Palir. Draw! He stared at the card for a few seconds. This was what he needed. He wouldn't be summoning his Number yet this way, but he'd get a lot of set-up on the way there. Normal Summon... "Karakuri Strategist mdl 248 Nishipachi"(ATK500/DEF1600/LV3)! It's effect: When it is Summoned... change the Battle Position... of one monster. "OOPArts Crystal Xenoform"... will change to... Defense Position. Another wooden clockwork figure appeared, this one pointing something out on a battle map. A beam shot out of the map and struck the alien, who assumed a more plaintive posture. I now have... a Tuner and... a non-Tuner. Tuning! The Level 3... "Karakuri Strategist"... tunes Level 4... "Karakuri Soldier"!

"The advancement of clockwork will bring a new leader! Coordinate his clockwork
servants! Synchro Summon! Take the battlefield, Karakuri Shogun model Double-
Zero Burei!" (ATK2600/DEF1900/Lv.7)

A larger, slightly more advanced clockwork figure appeared; this one had metal plating and some metal gears. When "Karakuri Shogun" is Synchro Summoned... I can Special Summon 1 Level 4... or lower "Karakuri" monster from my... Deck. Come forth, a second "Karakuri Soldier"... in Defense position. I now activate... "Karakuri Shogun"'s other effect: Once per turn, a monster... changes battle positions. "Number 33: OOPArts Superweapon Machu Mach"... changes to Defense Position. Blustering Winds! At the command, the shogun-esque robot waved the fan-like thing it was holding, causing a gust to fly towards the floating fortress of Number 33.

Battle Phase! "Karakuri Shogun" attacks... "OOPArts Crystal Xenoform"!

III observed the move with almost eager anticipation, both of his monsters taking their defensive stances. As the Karakuri shogun brought its sword down towards his OOPArts Xyz, he simply gave a slight nod, indicating he was not going to use his monster's effect. Sure, he could use the effect to prevent being destroyed by battle, but he would deal no Damage as a result, and it would only delay the monster's destruction.

The Xenoform attempted to shield itself from the attack with its limbs, but to no avail, and it dissolved into pixels.

"Trap activate!" III announced, his facedown card flipping up. "Stonehenge Method! This card can be activated when an OOPArts monster is destroyed by battle or a card effect. It Special Summons one Level 4 or lower OOPArts monster from my Deck, but it cannot change its Battle Position," III explained, the trap glowing faintly.

"I Special Summon OOPArts Mayan Machine!" A stone, vacuum-cleaner like being emerged on the Field in a defensive stance. (Lvl 3, 1500/700)

A flicker of amusement crossed III's face as he gazed at the card remaining in his hand before looking back at Palir expectantly.

He hadn't expected that. III let his "Crystal Xenoform" be destroyed to Summon another OOPArts monster. He had overpredicted his opponent and therefore had "Karakuri Soldier" in play rather than "Karakuri Ninja". He was still closer to not losing and to bringing out something to deal with "Machu Mach", however. After looking at his cards and the situation on the field, a terse Turn end. is all he can do. This is not good. He's still got his Number, and I can't touch it without 42. It's happening all over again... I can't let this happen again! Palir looked visibly panicked.

"My turn, draw!" III stated, seizing the top card of his Deck and eyeing the Field. Palir had no facedown cards on the Field, and only Burei had more ATK than his Machu Mach. He had been hoping to see a Number, rather than just a Synchro, but there was no point in complaining about that. Unlike the majority of Karakuri, the Synchro would not shift to defense if attacked, and that left Palir's very limited LP wide open.

"I activate the Continuous Spell OOPArts Pyramid Eye Tablet! This card gives all OOPArts monsters 800 extra ATK!"

The Spell appeared, surrounding both of his OOPArts monsters with an aura. (ATK: 2400 -> 3200) (1500-> 2300)

"I switch Machu Mach back to Attack Position," III continued, the mighty castle island, now more powerful than before, returning to its offensive stature. (ATK: 3200) "Go, Machu Mach! Attack his Karakuri Shogun! Divine Punishment!"

From the castle, a meteor flare launched into the air, disappearing into the sky. A moment later, a ball of flame descended upon Palir's monster.

NEVER AGAIN!!!! Palir's internal thoughts became vocalized as the fireball crashed into his monster, destroying it and inflicting 600 damage. (Palir LP: 1600) Can't let it... happen again... never again... no one will... be hurt again... These last few words were mumbled ramblingly as Palir appeared to have "lost it" during the last turn; suffering the damage from the Number probably didn't help. He continued to stare at his Disc, pointedly at the slot where his Extra Deck was stored. Soon I'll fix everything. I won't be guilty any more...

'Never again?' III repeated mentally, his expression briefly showing concern before refocusing on the Duel. "I set one card facedown and end my turn!" he announced, the card hologram forming on the Field. The stage seemed to be set now. If Palir couldn't mount some sort of comeback soon, the duel was almost certainly in his grasp.

There was still the chance he could fight back, but with the evident slip in sanity, III was having doubts that Palir would manage another big play.

The vacuum cleaner shaped rock was evidently much more brittle than it looked, for when the Ninja slashed it with its knife, it broke apart easily, the chunks disappearing. III winced, but otherwise didn't seem to mind the loss of his monster. He knew what was going to happen next, although he couldn't do anything to stop it.

"Nice attack," he said calmly, gesturing for Palir to continue.

"What?" Blazey yelled out as Witch Raider wiped out her backfield instantly. "Jokes on you, though," she muttered. One of her two face-downs flipped up before exploding. "Hero Medal," she said, "When its destroyed, I shuffle it into my deck, and draw a card. The other was Hero Barrier." She put Hero Medal into her deck, shuffled, drew a card, and smirked. (Hand: Four) She grimaced as Heat faced destruction, exploding into a blast of fire. Mikey, watching close by, actually felt the slightest bit of pain when he saw that monster being destroyed. (Blazey: 4000->3300) "That was a pretty good move," Blazey said. "My move? K." She drew a new card. (Hand: Five) "Woodsman's effect, adding another poly to my hand." (Hand: Six) "And also, a Field Spell! Skyscraper Two! Hero City!" She slapped a card down on the field, and a large, futuristic city built it self from nothing. "And I activate it's effect, so I Special Summon Heat from my graveyard! Its a Heroes job to defend its city, and so it rises from the grave to complete that task!" Blazey pointed up, revealing a spire atop one or the largest buildings. The sun sat dramatically behind it, and Heat appeared, balancing on one foot, on top of said spire. (ATK: 1600->2000) "So now Heat has returned!" Heat jumped of the spire, and landed dramatically next to Woodsman. "Now, I play Hero's Bond! Since I control an E-Hero, I can special Summon two from my hand!" She held up the card, and a flash of light revealed two more heroes standing atop buildings, jumping down to join their comrades. "E-Hero Stratos and E-Hero Prisma!" The two heroes that now appeared included a crystalline warrior and a mechanical avian-like warrior. "When I summon Stratos, I can destroy your spells and traps equal to heroes I control. I control four, which is enough to destroy both your set cards!" Stratos unleashed a blast of wind at both face-downs, destroying them. "Watch out, cuz now I use Prisma's effect. So by sending E-Hero Ocean from my deck to the grave, Prisma is treated as Ocean." Prisma changed shape, appearing as a dolphin-like creature. "Now I play Polymerization, so now, I fuse Ocean-Prisma with Woodsman! Earth rumbles and the sea tears as two mighty heroes combine! Shake the earth, Elemental HERO Terra Firma!" The two heroes flew up to the sky, merging in a flash of blueish light. Now appearing was a alienotic, bulky, bright-white fighter, floating high above the city. (ATK: 2500) "I now use Terra Firma's effect, so by tributing Heat, he gains attack equal to his own. Heat is at 2200 because I control three heroes, so Terra Firma gains 2200 attack himself, bringing him up to 4700! He now becomes, E-Hero Terra Firma Magma!" Terra Firma spread out its arms, and Heat did the same, being absorbing into him into himself. Suddenly, two swords made of fire-like energy appeared in Terra Firma's hands, and fire burst out of his back (ATK: 2500->4700). "Now, attack Witch Raider with Magma Slash, and Stratos attack Increase with Stratospheric Gust!" Terra Firma slashed through Witch Raider with its two swords, destroying it, and Stratos flew into the air, launching a blast of wind at Increase, witch erupted into an outward blast. (Neo: 3000->1000->300, assuming no response) With Neo's field empty, Blazey smiled. "Now Firma's attack goes back down. (4700->2500) Try coming back from that," she said. "You can make your move now." Mikey's eyes were wide with surprise. "I...I...I don;t know what to say...when did she become that good of a duelist?"

The artifact crumbled at the strike of the ninja robot's knife. The effect of... "Karakuri Ninja" activates: When it destroys... a monster by... battle and sends... it to the... Graveyard, I can... Special Summon 1... Level 4 or lower... "Karakuri" monster from... my Graveyard in Defense Position. I revive the... first "Karakuri Soldier". The ninja robot reached down, seemingly 'rescuing' the first "Karakuri Soldier" from "behind enemy lines". Main Phase 2. With these three level 4 monsters, I create the Overlay Network! Xyz Summon! Number 42: Walking Cannon - Artillery Unit!(ATK2300/DEF1000/Rnk.4) The three monsters on Palir's field swirled into a similar type of "Xyz Portal" that had been created when III had Summoned Number 33. A stylized '42' appeared on his left shoulder and the iris of his right eye glowed violet. The monster Summoned was curious, a humanoid robot with a panel on the front of its chest, a trenchcoat, and armored-looking forearms and lower legs, with '42' emblazoned on the left forearm. Palir began laughing, then calmed slightly before his next statement, directed at the Summoned monster. It has been a long time old friend! You know, I never got to say 'good-bye' before you were destroyed in battle because of my carelessness... Palir trailed off, then cast an intense glare at "Machu Mach".

III's eyes lit up as the Xyz portal was formed, confirming what he had dearly hoped would occur. As the monster appeared, he smiled. "There it is...his Number," he said. With an attack strength of only 2300, it would be no match for his Machu Mach. At least, that was the hope. Its effect was another matter.

"A very interesting monster," he said to Palir, inspecting the robotic monster with mild fascination. Now what can it do? he thought to himself. There would be no point to Summon a Number if it didnt have a nasty effect. With a name like 'Artillery Unit', he expected it would have some sort of destruction effect.

As Zebulos was hugged by Sonya, he embraced her and his big opossum ears were laid back to indicate both sadness and exhaustion. He did not mean to make Sonya cry this way, but in his mind he knew it couldn't be helped. The issue at hand was a heavy one, no matter what way they tried to look at it.

"Sonya... Please do not cry. I am going to do my very best to make sure nothing happens to any of us. Not only for our Holder's sakes.. but for you as well." Zebulos said as he gently tilted her face in order to once again look her in the eyes with a gentle look in his own eyes. "No more tears... Okay..?"

Zebulos wiped away Sonya's tears, placing his hand-like "paws" on her cheeks and then gave her a soft head-butt on her forehead followed by a nuzzle. (Something real oppossums do to show affection)

Amber looked to the man who approached him and tried to make herself look intimidating by frowning. (but in reality it would only make her look more like a little kid) When she saw his creepy smile however, it made her cringe in disgust.

"Dirty old man! Don't think I don't know what's going on in that bald head of yours!" Amber shouted out loud as she suddenly seemed to forget her manners. "I'll take you on right here! Right NOW! So BRING IT ON!! Just name your ante and I'll beat you and your deck down so hard you'll never EVER duel again!"

Palir saw the look on III's face as Number 42 was Summoned, but he was beyond caring at this point, fully driven by 42. He stared directly at III. The true form of Numbers is the Darkness in one's heart... The voice this time is layered beyond the mechanical sound of Palir's normal voice and has a sinister undertone before it stops, with Palir then addressing his monster once again. What was I... Right! 42! I managed to bring you back, and I won't leave you unguarded this time! His vision swung back to "Machu Mach" and his glare intensified. I activate Artillery Unit's effect! By detaching an Overlay Unit, I can banish one face-up card, then take damage equal to half of Artillery Unit's attack points! Go, Number 42! Annihilate his "Machu Mach"! FINAL SPARK! Of the three orbs circling the robot, one was drawn into the panel on its chest, which then opened. Out of the void came a large, telescoping cannon barrel, and "Number 42" bent backwards to aim it as it charged. As Palir spoke the final command, a large beam of energy shot out of the cannon and obliterated "Number 33" while the backdraft of the blast sent Palir to the ground on his back.
