John A. Zoidberg
A favorite off of ASOP isn't really saying much. That album was awful in comparison to some of the older ones. In Flames is great, but they're long past their prime. They went from being the epitome of melodic death metal to just another run-of-the-mill metalcore band. Bad transition, imo. Tentacruel
They really don't sound like most metalcore though. Hell, melody-wise, their old stuff reminds me a lot of certain metalcore bands they've influenced.
John A. Zoidberg
Okay, listen to The Jester Race, then listen to A Sense of Purpose, and try to tell me that A Sense of Purpose is the least metalcore of the two.
Tentacruel
Of course it sounds more like metalcore, I'm just saying it isn't generic metalcore. This is generic metalcore. John A. Zoidberg
Lol crabcore.
Tentacruel
I'm just saying, being metalcorish doesn't make it inherently bad. I prefer the old stuff too, but musically speaking their newer stuff isn't techincally inferior.
John A. Zoidberg
Musically, no, but you have to admit, the transition of "father of melodeath" to "we're metalcore" is just kind of disappointing.
Tentacruel
I suppose, but it's their music. It would actually kinda suck if they kept playing the same thing over and over.
John A. Zoidberg
But the thing is, people love them because each album is unique in their own way. The two most recent are just rather generic.
Tentacruel
I guess, I just can't not like them. (At least the most recent one, not sure about the second most recent one.) Hell, my least favorite album is probably Come Clarity. It's good music, but his voice... >.< My favorite album so far (from what I've heard so far) is Colony. John A. Zoidberg
Anders wasn't really meant for clean vocals. Though, as a devout fan of bands like Snowing, Algernon Cadwallader, etc. where the vocals are really more about sounding emotional than they are sounding good, I rather like Anders' vocals on Come Clarity. Also, I agree, Sounds of a Playground Fading is actually decent. My biggest problem with this band is that A Sense of Purpose just really shouldn't have happened (or at least not the way it did). Tentacruel
I suppose so, the songs on that are just a little, I dunno, odd? It just doesn't have the same song-writing quality to it.
Mr.Robot
I still enjoy In Flames work, even those that came after Come Clarity. They're still good compare to the pile of shitty bands in the metalcore scene.
Tentacruel
Actually, now that I think about it Zoidberg, A Sense of Purpose is definitely metalcore. Not really their best work. :/
John A. Zoidberg
ASOP is their worst album by far. Their best, IMO, is The Jester Race. It just proves how much influence they had on the Melodic Death Metal scene, even towards the beginning of their careers.
.Corgi
I'm a big fan of pre-ASoP In Flames. Together with Iron Maiden, it was one of the bands that got me into metal and music in general. I need to find my copy of Clayman. I lost it.
John A. Zoidberg
Clayman is probably my third favorite of all In Flames albums. My top three (in this order), are The Jester Race, Whoracle, and Clayman. Plus, Anders' vocals were at their peak during Whoracle.
~NOiSE~
I love In Flame's entire discography, but I think The Jester Race is a bit overrated. It definitely should be held in high regard for it's classic status and the influence it had on the metal scene, but I feel the songs are a bit underwhelming compared to the more dynamic songwriting they acquired as they went on. Whoracle is the one album I don't have, so I can't compare it to the previous album, but Colony is definitely a step up as far as being more dynamic and having more energy. Soundtrack to Your Escape is actually a personal favorite (braces myself for flying objects) because it has a really cool atmosphere compared to their other albums. In Flames almost has an album for every one of my moods, haha. Also, I've never had a problem with Jesper's vocals, but that's generally the thing that matters the least to me when I'm listening to music.
