If others knew it, they could throw a coup and run things their way since they don't need Amon like they do right now.

But then who would entertain them with stand-up comedy acts? D:

As for the point of Equalists being regular people or what not, I just want to point out that they've done a good job fighting Team Avatar. I think all of the main characters have had their butts kicked and/or met a good match from an Equalist soldier at least once, compared to TLA where the mains would curbstomp Fire Nation soldiers. You could say the writers are being more realistic this time around, but I think it's also due in part to Equalists being specially trained.

I think it has to do with them feeling like the underdog. They're never going to underestimate a bender, because they know exactly the kind of things benders can do. In ATLA, the soldiers were a part of the most powerful nation on the planet, fighting a 12 year old boy and his equally-underaged friends. They always saw Aang as a child first, the Avatar second. That's not the case with Korra.

Yeah, I could see that being the case too.
The main point being that the Equalists are pretty formidable, which is a nice change from minions usually acting as main character fodder.

I LOVE YOU FOREVER FOR POSTING THAT.

That's definitely going on my iPod.

I have to say that the Equalists have REALLY underestimated all of the airbenders on the show. The people who ambushed Tenzin got a taste of his airbending (they weren't moving afterwards), Jinora handily defeated the Lieutenant (who I consider, the butt monkey of the episode), Ikki threw the invading forces off of their balance while Meelo came in for the finish. Yeah that must have sucked for the Equalists.

I feel as if I have to ask. Is bending something you must inherit through DNA? It's implied but never explicitly stated in the show.
Well, yeah, it is.
Hence Mako and Bolin, and why there's only 5 Airbenders in the world.

Yes it is.

Even though Katara's parents were nonbenders, Katara's grandfather is heavily implied to have been a Waterbender. Bending can skip generations, which is why not everyone in the family can be able to bend.

Okay, so I just read that Kyoshi lived to be 230. How the hell does that work?

Also, as per the heredity thing, the first benders just learned it from copying animals, so I'm entirely convinced.

ALSO, this might have already been brought up, but I think Amon is Bolin and Gary Stu's father, although I'm hoping he isn't because that'd be cliche as hell.

I honestly have no idea.

Aang was the second oldest avatar at 166, and that was only because of the 100 years in the iceberg. Roku died at age 70 and with Aang dying while physically 66, I don't think Avatars usually live longer than anyone else.

Yeah, that's not very likely.
