Yoki drew five cards from his deck, paused, then drew a sixth.

 

"I normal summon Gagaga Magician!" Yoki declared. Suddenly, a chain-wielding magician in blue and red-brown clothing appeared in a flash of light. "Now, I activate the effect of the Kagetokage in my hand, allowing me to Special Summon it!" A two-dimensional black gecko with piercing red eyes shot out from the shadow of Gagaga Magician. "Crescendo, decrescendo! I conduct the symphony of tainted souls with the summon of this monster! With these two cards, I form the Overlay Network! Xyz Summon, Symphony Devil Maestroke!"

 

Gagaga Magician and Kagetokage morphed into a violet and black ball of energy, respectively, and swirled around eachother. A vortex of red energy appeared in the center of the path, and the two spheres of light slammed into the vortex, creating a bright explosion of color. As the light faded, a silver-haired young man in a demonically-themed conductor's outfit appeared, his arms crossed.

 

"Now, I'll set two cards face-down and end my turn."

'Hmph, typical,' Akuma thought to herself, 'I haven't even begun my first turn and already I'm staring down and Xyz Monster. No matter, I'll just have to kill it, and maybe see what those traps are while I'm at it. Not that hard.'

 

Akuma took her turn next, drawing the top card from her Deck, and studying her hand closely. Amidst the cards available to her right now, she had the perfect scouting strategy, although it might prove to be a tad reckless.

 

"I'll start by summoning Maha Vailo in Attack Position, and I'll equip it with Horn of the Unicorn," Akuma declared, still smiling at Yoki, "I'm sure you know what these cards do, so I won't bother to explain,"

 

A man in a blue robe sat in front of Akuma, arms and legs crossed as he levitated two spoons in front of himself.

These people were talking about the WDC? Palir had applied, and figured he could get enough time off to compete, despite his job probably being even more necessary with the influx of people and their garbage. The Obots would likely be run ragged. However, that was not currently of his concern. He stepped closer to the two, the one who had mentioned "Numbers" and the one talking about the WDC. Training for... the WDC? Would you... mind too terribly... if I joined... in? The voice is quiet, conversational, though the pauses are rather jarring. One could hear the tiredness in more than just the pauses, though a slight metallic tone in the speech makes these words slightly unsettling. I also happen... to be a... participant, so training... could be helpful.

"I send my Wave Motion Cannon to the Graveyard!" -shouted Markus

"b-but...4 Standby Phases..equals...."-mumbled a short, hairy stallion.

"4000 damage, you lose bro." - The Bronze colored gun started releasing steam and a sphere of electricity was generated, and then shot in a lightning stream against the stallion. Markus smiled, but then the smile became bigger and bigger. Soon, he was rolling on the floor laughing at his opponent-"I can't believe, you...you LOST while I had no monsters??? Dude you had Evolzar Laggia and I still beat you...you must SUCK!" mocked Markus while his opponent walked away.

Markus got up a couple minutes later to find out his opponent had already left."Bummer, I liked the stallion. He was funny" - Markus mumbled to himself.

 

He grabbed a card that fell from his pocket when he fell to the ground. It was an Exceed Monster, a Number monster too. It read "66"

The card was very important to him, since it was his brother's trumph card. This was also his brother's old deck, remade with Markus's new cards and some tweaks here and there.

 

"Why, do you want me to do this brother?" - asked Markus, looking at the sky like if the sky would answer - "I mean, this Carnival thing...the WDC...will you be there?"

 

Markus looked down and realized a tear had fallen on his brother's gift. He still didn't know why it had appeared overnight, but he knew his brother would be near this tournament.

 

"Bro...I WILL win the Carnival!" - Markus shouted. He had forgotten he was in the middle of a park, with ponies near him.

 

People were staring and pointing at him. All he did was blush and walk away quickly before they put him in a mental institution...when he stopped walking he heard some voices and looked to his left. He found a group of ponies talking, three people to be precise. There was this one person that he found strange, even scary, it was a white haired, green eyed stallion...he had a white mask on his face. Markus overheard the words "WDC" and "training" from his paused, metallic voice.

 

"This must be my lucky day" - he thought as he approached the stallion...-"Excuse me, are you talking about THE WDC? The Carnival? Dude I'm so in! When is the training!?"

Taio blinked. "Um, yeah! Its only,like, the greatest duel tournament ever! How could I not go?" He chimed. "Meh decks all geared up for it! Except I missed a release of some rare cards at the card store today," bringing that up brought his voice lower, reminding him of his mess up.

--Meh. Don't feel bad, kid--

And there it was a gain. That second voice. Again, he'd have to to see what that was later. "My decks filled with some awesome cards," he started again. "I can't wait for the carnival to start!" Then reality clicked in, knocking him out of the fantasy of the carnival. He remembered the boy's request and decided that it would be a good thing to do. "I'm up for a duel!" he cheered, whipping his deck out of one of his many pockets. "Let's get this started, Jayce!" He removed his watch, his D-Watch, mind that, and placed it over his right eye, transforming it into a D-Gazer sharing a shape with Cyber Dragon. He smiled.

 

"Augmented Reality Link Established"

 

"Check this. Elevate Gazer!" he shouted. And with that, his D-Gazer projected a large holographic screen which Taio pushed to the side. Immediately, a second one appeared on his opposite side, followed by a large holographic screen placed horizontally in front of him. The horizontal screen appeared as a duel mat with equations, graphs, ect. constantly drawing them selves and then disappearing. "This Gazer is of my on creation," Taio boasted, "Possibly my greatest success!" He placed his deck to his right on the holo-mat. "Who needs a D-Pad when you got this!?" he shouted. "I'll let you make the first move."

 

It wasn't until afterward that he noticed the weird guy watching them. He supposed he had ignored him in the rush of the moment, but he felt something very strange emitting from him.

"Not quite..." Yoki remarked, seeing the Maha Vailo's summon. "I activate my face-down Trap—Torrential Tribute." Suddenly, a massive volume of water swept over the duel field, threatening to wash away both monsters that resided on it. "Also, I activate the effect of my Maestroke. You see, when he would be destroyed, I can detach one Overlay Unit from him instead."

 

As if on-cue, the darkly-outfitted conductor unsheathed the rapier from his side. He flicked and twirled the blade, causing one of the two purple orbs that was orbiting him to dance in a rhythmic fashion. Finally, in a burst of high-pitched sound, causing the orb to explode and form a golden barrier around Maestroke, protecting him from the rushing waters of Yoki's Trap Card.

Takao smiled brightly once more at Lily. "So what do you want to do? We can go to the amusement park, the café, the Central Plaza in the park..." Takao stopped, and a concerned look overtook his smile briefly. "Hey...You look kinda worried about something...Everything alright?" Then, realizing that it probably seemed weird to seem so concerned about a girl he had just met (but a rather pretty one at that), he smiled once again, albeit sheepishly.

Jayce grinned as Taio accepted his challenge. "Oh good. I'd hate to have run all the way out here for nothing. Let's go! Duel Disk, set!" The pad on Jayce's arm extended into the standard D-Pad. "D-Gazer, set" He pulled the ren and orange lens out of his pocket, and, in a well-practiced manovre, flicked out one lens from his glasses, slipped the Gazer in, and caught the lens as it fell. As he put it away, he suddenly noticed his opponent's equipment. "Whoa. That's really, really cool. Anyway, I believe you said I could start this, so...". He added a sixth card to the ones he had already drawn.

 

"Let's see...first, I summon Evolsaur Diplo!" A long-necked purple dinosaur appeared next to Jayce and roared. (ATK:1600) "Then...I guess I'll just set a card and pass."

Kurai had entered Heartland a few hours earlier and just found his hotel, he would be participation in a tournament called the World Duel Carnival after hearing rumors that a large quantity of Numbers would be in the tournament. He didn't know much about them except that they had the power to corrupt their owners and that his Darkness Change protected him from this effect and allowed him to take them from their owners at the cost of mental strain on both him and their original owner. Kurai looked out his window and noticed 2 people dueling, Kurai wondered if either of them had a Number.

"Hm?" Lily responded, then smiled and shook her head. "No, everything's fine. I was just getting mixed up in my thoughts, which happens now and then, but is never a big deal, because whatever I was thinking about just is a small distraction and..." she paused, taking a breath before continuing. "I'd be okay with almost anything, but I dont particularly want to go to the amusement park. Seems too gimmicky, you know? Not that there's anything wrong with it, but it just doesn't suit my mood right now."

As the Duel started Palir took a few steps back, almost tripping over someone behind him. He'd managed to be distracted from the Numbers' power, and it was slowly fading. He mentally triggered the D-Gazer in his left eye, starting to view the duel unfold. Noting the virtual play table used by one of the duelists, Palir was impressed. That is quite... an impressive feat.. of engineering. I suppose... that it also... describes the cards... in play, in addition... to being made... of solid light? Palir idly wondered how to reverse engineer the 'solid light' aspect as the other duelist Summoned some variety of dinosaur.

Markus grabbed his D-Gazer shades and put them on. He saw the battlefield, and two duelists on each side.

"Evolsaurs? this is gonna be fun alright" Said Markus, as he saw a long necked purple beast from a prehistoric time - "Why would he Normal Summon Diplo, he is no use now..."

 

Markus looked to his side, and saw the duelist he had seen before. Markus sensed power. Great power, the same power he felt when he summoned 66. Maybe he had Numbers with him. Markus approached the white-haired masked stallion, who appeared to be watching the duel.

 

"H-hay...I-I didn't get your name stallion, I'm Markus. Markus Deux" - he stretched his hoof to the odd stallion, awaiting the same gesture from him.

Palir turned around and tilted his head in confusion at this person's strange greeting. I assume that... you will also... be in the WDC? Why don't we have... a practice match.. then? He shook the man's hand with his right, then pulled back his left sleeve. Duel Disk, set! I apologize... in advance. This may not... be for the faint.. of heart. He took his deck out of its box, manually shuffled it a bit, then pressed a button on his left wrist. The deck was inserted into the now-open slot and his forearm began to transform. The top half re-arranged itself into a deck holder and Life Point counter, while middle sections rotated on geared teeth to become the playfield. Weak lights on the front of the playfield would have generated holograms, had that mode been activated. Finally, Pailr stepped back a few paces, his Clockwork Disk at the ready. I think that... you should take... the first turn.

Taio smiled. "Thanks for the compliment! And," he said, drawing a card, "It's my turn!" He looked over his hand, then at his right screen. "Pull that baby up!" An image of Jayce's card popped up on the screen. He analyzed the card, then considered his face down. "Let me think...here! I control no monsters, so face the special summon of my Cyber Dragon!" He slapped the monster down on his horizontal screen, and, after typing a couple commands on one of his side screens, a large holographic frame built a 3-dimensional outline of the monster, and then the outside began to construct itself from thin air. It was done in all of five seconds, and then Cyber Dragon let out a huge screech. "Now I'll summon Cyber Phoenix. Then, the spell Crashbug Road! So I special summon a second Cyber Phoenix from my hand. Now, I fuse these monsters together with the power of Contact Fusion! I Bring out, Chimeratech Fortress Dragon! (ATK 3000)" The three monsters ascended into the sky, dismantling. The multiple parts of the machines reconnected, forming a giant robotic snake with more snakes peeking out of it's sides. Taio grinned. "Sadly, a Fusion Monster can't attack the turn it's summoned. So I'll end with two face downs." He slapped some cards face down on his holo-mat. "Ancient Dinos versus high-tech machines. This should be good."

"Don't mind if I do...three, four, five and...SIX!" - counted Markus, as he drew his cards. - "I'll go easy on you, Activate: Wave Motion Cannon!" The bronze coloured gun appeared behind Markus, waiting to be fired later.

"And now...Summon, Volcanic Slicer!" - A mechanic salamander appeared in front of Markus in a blaze (1800/1200) - "And I activate it's effect, you take 500 damage stallion" - The lizard-like creature fired a small fiery sphere at his opponent.

Markus was nervous, yet exited. He knew his opponent would be strong, but he didn't care: It might be the chance he had to test his Number.

Of course, Akuma had no intention of using Horn of the Unicorn just yet, and only said that as a bluff. It worked, as Yoki hastily activated the Torrential Tribute he had Set, unaware of Akuma's true intentions.

 

"Did you spot my bluff?" Akuma asked, before continuing on with her turn, "I thought you'd have something like that, which is why I have this; Magical Dimension. What it does is allow me to sacrifice a monster I control while I have a Spellcaster on the field, in this case Maha Vailo, so then I can Special Summon another Spellcaster in that monster's place, and I choose to Summon Dragon Witch, Protector of Dragons in Defense Position. I'm also targeting your Maestroke for its other effect. Now, normally this would destroy it, but I suppose you're only gonna save it via detaching another Xyz Material, now, aren't you?"

 

Suddenly, the flash flood drove its way towards the new humanoid being on the field, a blonde, kneeling woman with indigo clothing and blood red eyes. Immediately, the woman set up a barrier to stop the torrent from drowning her.

'Karakuri Soldier mdl 236'... in Attack Position. (1400/200) I next activate... 'Karakuri Cash Cache'... from my hand. This card allows... me to add... 1 'Karakuri' monster to my hand. Then a 'Karakuri'... I control changes... battle positions. As Palir searched his deck, the clockwork soldier which had been striking a menacing pose instead began to stand in a more 'defensive' stance. The monster I choose... is 'Karakuri Ninja mdl 919'. He put the card in his hand, then manually re-shuffled his deck. With that... my turn is over.

Jayce grinned as Taio played his spell card. "Wait up a sec. Crashbug Road affects both players. So, I can summon a monster also. And I guess I'll go for...Miracle Jurrasic Egg!" A large, white egg appeared on the ground. Then it started glowing, and rose into the air. (DEF:2000) With that done, he watched the rest of the combo play out. "Huh...a 3000 ATK monster turn one. However, with those set cards, your hand is totally gone, while I have plenty of cards to use...but anyway. My turn! Draw!" After dramatically pulling a card off the top of the pile, he placed it in his hand, and his smile widened. "Although I won't even need to use my hand for the big stuff. As you've so kindly let me play a second monster, and both are level four Dinos...I overlay Diplo and Egg..." The monsters quickly transformed into a red and white ball respectively, and rose into the air. A reddish vortex came into being on the ground, and the spheres flew into it. "...And I Xyz summon Evolzar Laggia!" The vortex exploded, and as it cleared, a reptilliane, four-winged, blueish creature was revealed floating behind Jayce. Two spheres orbited it. (ATK:2400) "Of course, Chimeratech is still stronger than Laggia. Or perhaps not...I equip Laggia with Xyz Unit! This card can be used as an Xyz material, and the equipped monster gains ATK equal to its Rank x200. Laggia gains 800 ATK, bringing it to 3200!" Laggia roared as a third orb appeared around it, and it's power rose. "And with that...Laggia, attack Chimeratech Fortress Dragon! Blast Burn!"

"Ok, this is interesting. It's been a while since I've dueled Karakuri" - said Markus, while drawing a card. The bronze Wave Motion Cannon started sparking, growing in energy (1 turn)

"I Summon Cloudian - Poison Cloud!" - a cloud of smog rose, slowly turning pink and taking a humanoid form, and finally showing an ugly blue face.(0/1000) - "That thing is UGLY, dude gotta get rid of it, I activate Star Changer! My Volcanic Slicer is Level 3 now." - The armored lizard began to shrink, as it's level decreased by one.

"Before I continue, I activate Slicer's effect, damaging you for 500 more."

"And now...I call an ancient, powerful beast. I form the Overlay Network, Grenosaurus!" - Both Volcanic Slicer and Poison Cloud became orbs of light, orbiting around each other, spining around until they made a fire vortex, fire that took the form of a dinosaur, a T-Rex like creature, with black armor and flaming eyes, Grenosaurus the dinosaur roared, shaking the ground. (2000/1900 ATK position)

 

"I suppose I won't attack, I don't want you bringing another Karakuri, it might be risky. I end my turn now"

'Grenosaurus' The little machine pointed at a specific point on the map, and the Dinosaur sat down a little. Tuning! I tune my... Level 4 Karakuri Soldier... with my Level 3... Karakuri Strategist.

He placed the card in his Disk then shuffled again. Karakuri Shogun... attack his 'Grenosaurus'. Then, Karakuri Ninja... direct attack. The large samurai machine crushed the dinosaur with its wand-thing, then the ninja rushed in for a quick strike, dealing 1700 damage. That ends... my turn.

Markus's eyes were looking directly at the cards on his hoof, wondering...

"I believe I CAN do this." - Said Markus

 

"I activate Double Summon!" "I Normal Summon Blackwing - Gale the Whirlwind and Stealth Bird!" - two birds, green and blue flew in front of Markus.

 

"I Activate Gale's effect to halve Burei's ATK and DEF!" - A gust of wind blew away half of the shogun's armor and it's fan. (1300/950)

 

"And I form the Overlay Network, Rise, Lavalval Ignis!" The two monsters became orbs of green and blue light and spun around, they formed a fire vortex, faster and faster spinning, until it exploded, and a knight in black armor and body of fire rose, Lavalval Ignis (1800/1400)

 

"And now..." - Markus held his breath - "Attack, Blazing Smash!" - The knight jumped in front of the shogun, with it's fist lit on fire - "I activate Ignis's effect, I remove an Overlay Unit from it, and increase it's ATK to 2300!" - One of the orbs around the knight disappeared and Ignis's fire became wilder. With a single blow, Burei was dust. (1000 damage)

Palir reeled from the virtual blow. Tch. This is harder than I thought it would be...

His turn began and he gave an audible grunt of dissatisfaction at the card he had drawn. This wouldn't help, not at the moment. Of the options before him none were very good. He could continue not pulling punches, and be predictable, or he could try something that wouldn't work, and possibly lose because of it.

Main Phase. I Summon... another 'Karakuri Strategist'(500/1600). Its effect... causes 'Lavalval Ignis' to switch... to Defense Position. I then... Synchro Summon another 'Karakuri Shogun'(2600/1900/Level 7)... and use its effect... to Summon another... 'Karakuri Ninja'(1700/1500). He was doing what he had done last turn again, how predictable, but with it his best option, being clockwork predictable would have to do. Battle Phase. Karakuri Ninja attacks the Defense Position 'Lavalval Ignis'. The mechanical ninja's blade cleanly cut the armored warrior in two. By Karakuri Ninja's effect... when it destroys an... opponent's monster I can... Summon a 'Karakuri' from my Graveyard... in Defense Position. Be revived... 'Karakuri Strategist'. The ninja jerkily bent down and pulled a smaller machine out of nowhere. Karakuri Strategist's effect... I switch Karakuri Strategist... to Attack Position. Now, Karakuri Shogun... and Karakuri Strategist... direct attack. That ends... my turn.

Taio smiled. "Awesome! An Xyz!" He shook his had and smacked himself, knocking himself back into reality. "Ok then," he said. "To bad you tried doing that, cuz' I'm activating Windstorm of Etaqua! This nifty little thing switches all your monster's battle positions! So with Laggia in defense, his attack is negated. " He said this last word syllable by syllable to emphasize the effect. "Heh," he smirked, making a peace-sign.
