I know I have a regular thread for my sprites, but this is sort of a special case.

Could use a little bit of help everyone.

Working on some Fakemon, I was liking where I was going, then bam!

I now have three different designs for the 'eye' on his back. I wasn't intending it to be a real eye, just sort of a pattern. Yet I can't decide between the few ways I have it drawn. The first is nice and simple, but I worry about how it doesn't stick out well. The second sticks out a little better, but something seems off. The third sticks out great, but it's starting to look too real, too complex for a simple marking possibly. As I'm typing this, I tried turning the first one's color around so the eye was black instead of purple, and that might work.

So does one in particular look nice to any of you? Is there perhaps a 4th option that might work better? I tried a few other color combinations too, but I just don't know. Any comments, CnC, or critique would be greatly appreciated!

EDIT:

New designs:

1st: It doesn't really resemble an eye upon first glance, In an official pokemon game that might not be a problem because people will actually take the time to appreciate an actual pokemon's sprite and really look into it, it may actually benefit the sprite Because people tend not to like the obvious in a sprite they will be seeing often. However as a fakemon, especially one directed at the viewing audience of people who just happen to find this thread and view the sprite, they won't really take that time to admire the piece as they would if it were an official pokemon sprite.

2nd: I feel as if this eye tries to lure in far too much unneeded attention, it takes away from the piece as a whole, and looks forced.

3rd: This one is clean, and it looks persistent with the other features that make the piece. It also matches the actual sprites eyes which makes it a bit more realistic, feels like it belongs, and it is not as forced.

Overall in each of these I would try and add tribal markings using each eyes' colour pallet (1st;purple, 2nd;black, 3rd;white) on the main body and even perhaps the legs to make it more like an evolution than a simple ariados with an enormous eyeball with horns attached to the back. Keep it simplistic though, no need to go overboard and derive from the actual focal point, the eye.

Hope this was beneficial, took me a while to write up, but I try to make up for the lack of cnc that gets posted around here.

Spider or well... any kind of patterns on an animal that are designed to intimidate cannot be so obvious. Even a false eye doesnt look like an eye but it sure does intimidate you VERY well. Also, as a rule these features are also complimentary in color to the overall color of the animal or insect/reptile so that it "pops" more. This rule is different when it's for camouflage or deception but this is intimidation.

Thus, if I had to suggest something it'd be to make a 4th version that starts off a bit more abstract and then solidify it into the pokemon style.

Thank you, both of you. It's rare I get such indepth critique, and I loved every word of it. Not all of your suggestions are present in these guys, but the final result I'll work on some of the suggestions.

Ok, so opinions on which is best are all over the place right now =P

Seriously, for the most part, all three designs have been equally liked seemingly.

So to complicate matters, I made even more designs:

I have some new palettes and a new eye design.

Right now I'm leaning towards 16, but I'd still love to hear what everyone else thinks.

Glad I could be of help.

Definitely leaning toward 16 as well.
It's got that black widow intimidation to it, in the sense that it's very simplistic but demands focus in an assertive way, while also leaving a very lasting impression.
Also, the darker body palette works better with the concept.

Overall, an inspirational sprite and concept.
You always produce something great, forcing me to conjure up something of my own.

4 is definitely the best.

- Most of the others' shading are far too dark to even be considered Pokémon-style pixel art.
- The colours of it and shading is the best to work on for now.

I'd say fix the perspective of the eye to match the curve of the abdomen. A slightly more regular shape to the abdomen would look better. It randomly bulges on the right side of it (making it seem nearly hourglass-shaped), so trim a little off there.

I like it a lot though.
