Clair
I was listening to Gordon Goodwin today, and that got me to thinking about jazz and how it's viewed in the world today. How do you feel about my favorite genre of music, and are any of you jazz fans? If so, who are your favorite artists/what are your favorite pieces? I really am interested. My favorite artist is John Coltrane. Huge influence on my musicianship and creator of one of my favorite pieces "Blue Train". Also up there in the favorites are Gordon Goodwin (and his Big Phat Band) and The Duke. And of course, my most played song (according to iTunes) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n6jCJZEFIto
.Rai
I absolutely love jazz. Too bad, like pretty much all music, I have trouble finding good artists to listen to :> Jazz is just so amazingly fresh. The rhythms and unusual, modern chords are really satisfying to listen to. And to play, especially on honky-tonk pianos. Might take up the saxophone, but I've never been one for *ahem* blowing. I shall stick to the guitar and piano for now, methinks. John A. Zoidberg
I'm in my school's jazz program, we actually had a show last week. Anyway, I love jazz, whether it's something smooth like After Hours, energetic like Night Train, or exotic like Watermelon Man.
Mehmani
Jazz as a genre spans centuries and is remarkable in how it can vary. The Gypsy Jazz of Django Reinhardt and the Quintette du Hot Club du France, the virtuosity of the blind Art Tatum, the swinging big band of Miller and Goodman and the crazy soloing of be-bop in Parker and Gillespie. Miles Davis revolutionized Jazz with his Kind of Blue in 1959, opening up a new wave of "cool" jazz - helped along by Chet Baker and the rise of the Bill Evans Trio, the most prominent Jazz group ever headed by a white man. Then there's the modern Jazz movement of the 1980s with Django Bates and Garrick and the rest, but I never cared much about that.
Gospel.
Yeah I just got started in my school's Jazz program (I play drums) a couple of weeks ago just before our holiday break. I can play Jazz and swing rhythm well but I was never really into the genre itself until just recently, so I haven't found any artists that I really like yet. But I have to say it's fun to play. Real fun.
Makο
I never really got into Jazz at all. It's just, not my style really. Now that I think about it, I have a very hard time defining Jazz. I'm rarely able to distinguish it's parts. Honestly, I didn't even know Tank! was a Jazz song. I should really look into Jazz more. I might end up liking it. btw, Tank! reminds me of the theme for Hong Kong Phooey for some reason.
gimmepie
I like the Jazz I have heard, but have heard very little and know very little of it. Is Joe Cockers "Leave Your Hat On Jazz"? Cause that's awesome. And I like Amy Whinehouse's Jazz/Rock/Pop/R&B sorta style (I count that as Jazz). Edit: Nope Cocker is a blues artist... I always get that confused with Jazz for some reason...
