It’s supposedly this point in the future where “super-intelligence” gets discovered in machines, where all the barriers that previously restricted us get torn down. We’ll understand the universe, and through technology we will look upon it as gods. Of course, nobody right now can understand such grandeur, so it’s like the event horizon of a black hole. We can’t have any idea as to what lies beyond.

 

Well, some people have the theory that maybe, just maybe, humanity can be ushered along the same way. As a race, we’ll eventually reach a point where biological development will snowball along, and we ourselves will evolve into gods of our own being. Humans will be able to construct themselves to become masters of their own domains. But, that will probably be thousands, even millions of years to come. Is there any way to hasten this? What will this result in? These are things we can’t know...”

 

Approximately 2 years ago – The think tank Lemniscate was founded, devoted to finding new solutions to problems in the field of bioethics. After the initial amount of fanfare, they faded quietly into the background after a few days.

 

2 weeks ago – A chemical gas attack was carried out on the city subway system, killing 15 and injuring around 2000 more. No groups have currently stepped forward to claim responsibility.

 

4 days ago – Multiple unlabeled books were covertly delivered to various people across the city. The books’ contents are puzzling, to say the least, and those who read them seem to wake up the next morning with new amounts of invigoration and strength.

 

Now – Things are getting... unusual.

[spoiler=Terms to Know]Variorum – A specific type of visual code that seems to awaken greater physical abilities in the person that views it. A variorum seems to be tied to a specific individual: they don’t work on others. They are currently being delivered to certain people across the city for an unspecified reason. Variorums take the physical form of small black books, with the barcode-esque code fully covering the pages inside.

 

EDF – Short for “evolutionary drift factor.” The EDF is a formal way to measure evolutionary progress, in terms of the number of divergence points one needs to travel up the tree of life before they reach a given species. For example, chimpanzees and bonobos are the closest animal relatives to humans, so they each have an EDF of 1. Dogs, on another hand, would have a much higher EDF, but not as high as bacteria. All humans, therefore, have a number between 0 and 1: if they were 1 or above, they’d be a different species and therefore unable to reproduce with humans themselves. The higher the number, the more “mutated” a person is, with higher EDFs linked to enhanced physical attributes and even superpower-esque adaptations. However, the process is expectedly gradual if not forcefully induced.

Apple'gies, but this is where I'm zipping my lips to not divulge too much of the plot. I will say that this does involve mutants in some form, so if you'd like to join keep that in mind. Occupation: Unemployed. Previously a Medical Examiner and, more recently, a Biochemical Engineer.

 

Appearance: Tough build, though he doesn't work out; 5'11", 165 lbs; Russian; black hair, blue eyes, fair skin; has a scar on his back from an biking accident when he was young (not very noticable).

Clothing: White shirt, open green jacket, dark green/blue pants (usually green). Black/white sneakers. Wears a fancy watch. Glasses

 

Personality: Nik tends to be a bit of a goof, making bad jokes and using off-beat and subtle irony to make humor. Nik has a typical nerd nature in that he is very passive, and he follows commands more easily than the others, complying with commands not because of their logical sense but because the command told him to. He is more prone to stupid ideas than his friends and is made out to be the butt of a lot of jokes with his chats to them. Nik's inner nature drifts toward an overall good guy, more out of necessity to avoid his father than because of moral obligations (by the way, he still lives with is parents. His father can be really hard on him). He even celebrates the birthdays of his friends.

 

While not the most intelligent or imaginative of his peers, Nik is by far the most inventive (not to say that he isn't intelligent); from the beginning, he shows more innovative prowess in the medical fields than any of his old coworkers, even before the introduction of Lemniscate. In fact, Lemniscate is considering to rehire him just for his creativity.

Appearance: Grey stands at 6'3" tall, and is thin compared to others of a similar age and build, "tipping the scales" at 164 lbs. His russet hair is generally very untidy, but it is not unattractively so; indeed, it is one of those "intentionally messy" dos that so often gets on the nerves of members of older generations. His eyes are amber in coloration, but this is often unnoticed due to the tinted lenses of his spectacles. Grey's skin is fairer than "average", but he is not otherworldly pale; rather, he is comparable in skin tone to the average Caucasian Yu-Gi-Oh! or Cardfight!! Vanguaqrd player. His nose has a slightly upturned tip, but it is not very noticeable to those who aren't actually examining him.

Clothing: Grey has two different "sets" of outfits—work attire and everyday wear. In his work attire, he generally wears comfortable, yet practical, jackets and pants, with rather plainly-designed shirts and running shoes. In terms of everyday wear, he wears t-shirts or hooded sweatshirts with ironic, intellectually-based, or pop-culture-oriented designs and sayings. As was mentioned previously, Grey wears glasses with lens hat become tinted when exposed to ultraviolet rays, turning an amber color, much like his eyes. It is of a somewhat-interesting note that Grey never wears shorts; this is because he finds his legs "ugly", and has a tendency to become very cold.

 

Personality: Positives—Grey is generally very kind and well-intentioned. He often tries to help others in any way he can, and is willing to put others before himself in most scenarios. Also, he is typically honest with most people, as he feels "if the truth is there, it better make itself known to those who seek it; dancing around a bomb will not cease its detonation unless that is how it was designed to be deactivated, and that is hardly ever the case".

Negatives—Grey has a tendency to be very withdrawn from people, and he is not very good at making small talk or opening up about his feelings—This makes people realize that he made an odd choice in becoming a detective, as this requires quite a bit of communication with other people, yet he manages to get by by simply stating facts and observations, and not allowing his "feelings" to get involved in the scenario or going out with his colleagues for drinks and the like. Additionally, Grey has two intense fears—communicating with people he is attracted to and upsetting people. The first of his fears stems from an incident in his childhood that he refuses to talk about. The second is from the bizarre notion that it is his duty to make sure that everyone around him is happy all of the time, and that he is the cause of all misfortune in people's lives; as a result of this, he often hesitates before answering questions and tends to change his opinions very suddenly so that he may please whoever he is talking to.

Appearance: Caucasian at 6'4" and 250 LBS. Somewhat overweight with short dirty-blonde hair, blue eyes, and no piercings or tattoos.

Clothing: Usually wears a T-shirt underneath a light-blue hoodie, as well as blue jeans, silver sneakers, and a red and black hiking backpack with a black Toshiba laptop, the accessories needed, and plenty of space for supplies.

 

Personality: Daniel is a bit of a joker, but his jokes are very hit or miss, however, with his laptop, he can serve as a valuable information source. Unfortunately, he has an addiction to the Internet, and usually retreats into cyberspace when agitated. He is normally quite mellow, but over time, stress may accumulate until it reaches a rather high breaking point. He is somewhat smart, claiming to be 1 IQ point shy of getting into MENSA, and he is rather strong, but he is quite socially awkward, and isn't the best at making friends.

Daniel is also autistic, which accounts for a few of his quirks. On the spectrum, he is very high-functioning, meaning he mostly seems like a nerdy young man. He is a bit childish, and his frustration in areas involving the opposite gender, especially involving a disastrous relationship during his senior year of high school, have led to him being a child of the Internet and a bit of a perv, though he mainly tries to be chivalrous and kind. He loves anime, manga, card games, video games, and the Internet as a whole, and would be devastated i his precious connection was removed for a long period of time, especially permanently.

Appearance: Xander sports a thin, but athletic build, standing at 5'7" and weighing 133 lbs. His black hair is stylized in a buzz-cut, and his eyes are a hazel color. Xander's skin is a light-tan due to his mix of African and Caucasian heritage, and while his face is clear of any blemishes, he carries several scars across his upper body.

Clothing: Xander usually wears any of several t-shirts, though on colder days he wears them underneath a black hooded jacket. His pants always consists of blue jeans, and his shoes are white sneakers with red laces.

 

Personality: Xander is a rather outgoing person, who cheerfully greets most everyone that he spends time with. Xander enjoys the company of others, and dominates the conversation at times due to his loud and spontaneous nature. He loves to laugh, and makes many jokes when around others, sometimes at his own expense. Xander is very individualistic, and often has his own agenda, which he will strive towards and make possible however he can. Xander enjoys helping others from time-to-time, but does not go out of his way to do anything too charitable, especially when it does not benefit him in some way. Xander loves to do physical activity because of his energetic personality, but is also easily distracted and puts off important things for tasks he considers more interesting. Xander is more of an outdoors-man, and while he does have some basic knowledge of technology, he finds himself enjoying the physical aspects of life (books, sports, outdoors, etc) rather than the digital.

 

Xander has a tendency to go on forever about an abundance of topics, even if he doesn't know much about them, and has been told more than once that his habit of constant talking is very annoying. His love of sports makes him very competitive, and can lead to arguments that are blown out of proportion by Xander's short temper. Xander, while happy to make friends with everyone, has a hard time talking to girls, and an even harder time talking to the ones he likes. In these instances he is even somewhat shy. Xander tries to respect the opinions and beliefs of others, but struggles at times, and often will leave a person or group that disagrees with him with the belief that he doesn't need them. While Xander is a very energetic person and has an above average memory, he is often absent-minded and apathetic towards things that don't interest or concern him. This lack of dedication often leads to him going back on commitments and quitting halfway through projects. It's also why others sometimes view him as lazy and his successes in life as unearned.

Appearance: Viktor is taller than the average man, standing at a height of 2.1 meters. He has a pale skin tone and a semi-athletic build. While he spends so much time doing something else that he sometimes forgets to eat, but he does exercise at times. He has long, unkempt, charcoal hair which has started to grey at places. He has blue-green eyes and his lower face is covered by a stubble with the same color as his hair. His right hand is a cybernetic augmentation with a mini-computer built in, and on his chest is an implant of some kind, but no one other than Viktor knows of it's function.

Clothing: Viktor usually sports a black coat with a shirt of any color (usually marine) underneath, and a pair of dark trousers. There's usually a scouter-like device covering his left eye and his left hand is covered by a glove (his right hand is, as previously mentioned, a cybernetic)

 

Personality: Viktor is very smart and kind, and he would do anything that his powers allowed to help the few friends that he has. He's also a very quick thinker, coming up with solutions, while not always better than others' solutions, faster than others. As for his negative sides, he's a very scientific person. If a discussion about religion comes up, he will usually try to disprove it, but not to an extent to harshly offend anyone. He can also get carried away when he discovers something, even to the point that the entire world disappears from his mind. He's also not open for relationships, both romantic and non-romantic, as he's usually too naïve to realize that someone tries to connect with him.

Okay, review time. First, notes for everyone:

• The median height of white males between 20 and 25 is around 5'9". All but one of the apps I've received puts height from 6-7'. Seriously, guys. Not everyone is that tall. Shorten yourselves a bit. On that note, not everyone is a genius. We can have stupid people too.
  
• We need girl characters. I plan to start by accepted 3 other males and 2 girls. There are 4 guys right now. That’s not good.
  
• Try making your character in a different niche, hm? I accept characters that are all different, so if I see everyone's the same I'll deny people to get variety.
  

Atman, you are PENDING:

• Give some more cohesive detail for Appearance and Clothing instead of just a list of phrases.
  
• I’d like it if you can remove the reference to him working at Lemniscate – it’d give your character an unfair “advantage” in the latter parts of the game, so to speak.
  

Dharc, you are PENDING:

• “He also has a tendency to give random people he passes on the street advice with problems they seem to be having.” – I’m sure this would creep a lot of people out, having a stranger barge into their life. You can keep it, but make sure to explore the consequences.
  
• If he’s so shy, then why is he a) talking to people like that in the first place, and B) a private investigator, which can require a lot of socializing?

• I’m hesitant about accepting a character with autism, because while Daniel’s an interesting character, I don’t know if you’re portraying the disorder correctly and I’d rather not make assumptions as to whether you are or not. If you’d like to revise it, feel free: otherwise I’m going to have to mull things over a bit more.

Occupation: Formally government - Techno-Organic Scientist, Now Unemployed/ "Doctor"

 

Appearance: A pretty young looking woman, Ayame stands at 5 foot 10 inches tall, weighing approximately 120 pounds. Though of relatively slender build Ayame is none the less well toned, curved and feminine, her skin is rather fair, though it does possess a slight olive tint to it. She has very long (down to her lower back), very light straight white and black hair which she usually wears in a number of possible ways, from in a long pony tail to let loose to a half dozen other ways depending on her mood. However she chooses to wear it however, there is one trait that is always present, a ribbon given to her by her old friend.

Clothing: She normally wears a one piece black white and blue dress that reaches to her mid thigh along with black stockings. Along with it she wears a black glove in her right arm and a white one on her left each connecting to her dress.

 

Personality:Ayame is a very forthright, unconventional and courageous girl. She doesn't overreact to simple insinuations and instead likes to take things at face value but she is not naive either. She is generally aware is someone is trying to fool her but she also likes to assume the best of people. Ayame is also very free-willed and dislikes adhering to set social standards. She lives her life based on her own attitudes towards things and is not influenced but the views of others, even in the most simplest of matters. Ayame is considered a dreamer by most who know her and is often caught lost in her own thoughts. Though seemingly contradictory, she is also extremely organized and logical.

When working in some instances she personifies the stereotype of the semi-mad scientist she is not against testing her research of herself or others . Ayame is not averse to disposing of those who get in her way and is not easily intimidated, usually speaking to others in a very direct and arrogant manner. She cares little for others, and simply considers people to be "toys" or "tools" she can sacrifice in order to get what she wants. In other instances she has show the tendency to isolate herself from any outside contact until her work is finished even going far as moving away.

• My main concern with your character is that he (once again) fits the same mold as many other of the characters: selfless to almost a fault, leadership material, and has a soft spot for video games. Diversify, kid. We need variety here.
