I wrote this a while back, and I wanted to see what you guys think of it. I edited it slightly since 2 years ago, so I dont think there are any errors. Credit to Roger Zelazny for the Amber setting. Tell me what you think!

[spoiler=Chapter One]

The Chronicles of Amber: Son of Corwin

I looked out my window, admiring the mountain of Kolvir. It’s such a beautiful summit, and it’s hard to believe that much blood has been spilt on it. I remember Father’s story of how it came to be, and Amber….

In the beginning, there was nothing at all. Then there was Chaos. A spinning, complex maelstrom of change, Primal Chaos. Pure destruction, pure fury, the essence of change. At the fringes of Chaos, where it interacts with the great Abyss, the remnants of the original nothingness are small regions of habitability. Shards of worlds, shreds that are not stable, but constantly changing, appearing, and disappearing. Into these primal fragments of reality came life, and then sentient life. The Shape-Shifters. They were the only ones who could survive these places, those who can continually adapt to ever-changing worlds.

And the Shape-Shifters formed the Courts of Chaos, and learned to tame the Logrus, the representation of Primal Chaos, and use it as a tool. They are the Lords of Chaos; they were the masters of the universe.

Were, until for some unknown reason, one of their own rebelled against them. His name was Dworkin. Dworkin somehow found, forged, or stole a very special artifact. A device of unknown properties called the Jewel of Judgment.

With the blessing of the mythical Unicorn, against the violent raging of his elders, Dworkin remade the universe. He inscribed a force that opposed Chaos. In his own blood Dworkin drew, or wrote, or conjured, the Primal Pattern.

The Pattern was an imposition of a different kind of power onto the universe. Where all is fluid and changing near Primal Chaos, order and stability dwell in Pattern realms. Between these two great symbols, of chaos and order, of Logrus and Pattern, there came to be an infinite number of Shadows. Each a possibility, a different mirror image. Each Shadow, an entire physical universe, is a reflection of the Primal Pattern, but each is unique, each warped in its own special way by the distant fluctuations of Chaos.

Surrounding Primal Pattern is a region of great power. And, following those apocalyptic days, it came to pass that a kingdom was formed, to be named Amber. It’s ruler, King Oberon, son of Dworkin, initiate in the ways of Pattern, fought wars, built a dynasty, fathered heirs, and founded a Castle, known also as Amber. Oberon had sons and daughters, each of whom had a measure of their father’s power. In each was born the power to walk the Pattern.

These Princes and Princesses of Amber, each carry in their veins the blood of Amber. Having walked the Pattern they can move through the Shadow universes, and shape Shadow itself, to their own ends. Theirs is the power of life and death, creation and destruction.

I am the son of one of these sons of Oberon. My father is Corwin, and I am heir to Avalon’s throne. For long ago my father, thinking the Primal Pattern was gone, inscribed his own pattern, on the boundary between the Courts and Amber. So I am heir to two Patterns, the original and my fathers. In two days I will walk the Pattern at Castle Amber, where Uncle Random reigned. The days of Oberon are long gone, as he sacrificed his life to restore the Primal Pattern.

I am nigh on 25 years old, in Amber time. For, although I am still learning the laws of the Shadows, I found out from Uncle Random that there are fast time Shadows and slow time Shadows. In a fast time Shadow, you could stay there for a decade and only a few lazy days would pass by in Amber. In a slow time Shadow, you could stay for a week and have months go by in Amber.

“Hey Star, I hear your going to walk the pattern day after tomorrow!” That was my cousin, Celeste. She is Aunt Fiona’s daughter, and is a year older than me. She also stood a little taller than me, which I find quite annoying. She was wearing a blue dress that went down to her ankles. It looked odd with her heavy black boots. “I remember when I walked the Pattern. It’s harder than it sounds! But if you make sure your well rested and fed, then you should be fine.” Celeste tossed her bright red hair, which she had inherited from her mother.

“I’m not nervous Celeste,” I said, still looking out the window. “I simply am anxious for it. I wish to see the shadows, to travel to Avalon. To walk Father’s Pattern.”

“You just can’t stop rubbing that in cant you?” Celeste said, smiling.

Celeste is my favorite cousin, mostly because she is funny and jokes a lot. But also because she is very friendly, especially to me. I also think Father is her favorite Uncle, but that’s just a speculation.

“Nope.” I replied, turning around and smiling as well.

“Jerk.” She said, all the while smiling. She came over and punched me on the shoulder. We do this every time we see each other. It’s become some sort of greeting ritual.

“I just hope that Daniel comes too.” I said. Daniel is Uncle Benedict’s son, and a great weapons student. He has natural talent, and it helps a bit that he has Benedict as his father. He is about as tall as me, with jet black hair that is always rather short. He wears a leather tunic everywhere, and pants that looked like they came from Shadow Earth. Father spent a little time on Shadow Earth, and he was the one who first commented on Daniels pants. Everyone laughed, and no one has let that one go.

“Course he’ll come. He will want to brag that he walked the Pattern before both of us.”

“And I’ll counter with bragging that Father has his own Pattern.”

“And he’ll storm off in a huff as always.” Celeste said laughing. I always liked hearing her laugh. Me and Daniel bragging to each other was another time-honored ritual. I shooed Celeste out of the room so I could get dressed for lunch. I wanted to see if Uncle Gerard had arrived. He was my favorite Uncle, because he taught me how to wrestle, and always was willing to have a match with me. I have yet to beat him.
