How To Convert and Play Videos on the 3DS

So, the recent 3DS update allowed for recording of videos. Of course, this means it must also be able to let you check the videos to ensure they turned out right. Due to this, we can now make the 3DS play video files despite Nintendo not having the feature added on purpose, but the video must be converted to the highly-specific low-res format the 3DS uses.

Credit for this goes to several users on Serebii.net.

The process is nice and simple.

Setup:

Click here and download the latest static version of ffmpeg. Extract it into a folder wherever you want.

Converting Video:

Just drag and drop the video you want to convert onto 3dvideo.bat and follow the instructions.

When asked how many splits you want to do, it's actually asking how many parts you want to split it into, so an anime episode would require that you type a 3 there.

Do note that some file formats don't work properly. When I tried converting episodes 1 and 2 of C[sup]3[/sup], the first part of the episode wouldn't show on the 3DS, most likely because it was saved as a .avi. When I tried the first episode of Ben-To, which was a .mp4, it worked perfectly.

Playing the video on the 3DS:

Put the files into the same folder on the SD card that the 3DS exports its pictures and videos to. Make sure its name is something like VID_####.avi.

You should be able to locate the gallery of videos/pictures you've taken on the 3DS itself. Its rather obvious when you open the camera menu.

Upon opening the gallery, it should tell you that it's updating its management file, and then puts the videos in under January 1st, 1900.

Tap the one you one to play and press the highly misleading "Edit Video" button.

Enjoy!
