"Surprise, surprise! When you attack, I activate 'Darksoul Shock Field'! This Allows me to destroy my Gaia to send the top card of your deck to the graveyard. An oh, Gaia's effect activates! When he's destroyed by a card effect (Shock Field), you send another one to the grave! How bout that, Rachel?" Lukas laughed evilly. "This wont be an easy duel for you, girl! Since Gaia was destroyed by card effect and not battle, I take no damage. Now its my move! Draw! I summon Mutation Darksoul (ATK 100) and set 2 face down cards. Turn, end"

"Grrrhhh" Rachel was impressed by that move. She drew a card. "Alright now I summon Event Horison - Werewolve in defense mode! You you may be wondering why Werewolve ain't in the graveyard? Well his unaffected by Continuous Black Pit. And each time a monster is destroyed by the effect of a card you discard the top card from your deck. Now I play Horison Call Up! This card allows me to Special Summon a monster to the field with Event Horison in it's name. I chose my Rag Doll! Now my Rag Doll has 1100 DEF, but is effected by my Pit. So now when my Doll is banished upon summoning I gain 1000 LP. You discard the top card from your deck. (Rachel's LP: 5000) Now to end my turn I play my face-down Brace For Impact! As long as continuous black pit is on the field I take no battle damage! Also I'm discarding my Banish Digger!"

Kira was standing a few feat away from Jester and watching the duel studying him opponents strategies and figuring out ways to beat them, he knew Lukas from somewhere but couldn't put his finger on it until he saw the cards he had played and Kira snapped his fingers remembering where he had seen him before. "Now I remember Lukas is that born blue student that actually had to get an archetype made for him." Kira rememebered that the term born blue was something students whose families pay for them to get into Obelisk Blue instead of working there way there but of course not all of them relied on super rare cards to win but most did and Kira didn't know if Lukas was one of them or not.

Mathias was in his room reading over the remained of the scrips with the TV on listening to the duel so that he would have an idea about what his opponents would be bringing out.

Nathaniel had a nice nap on the train, so he was full of energy and was at full attention for the first duel of the NDML. He was in a special box in the arena alongside some of the other competitors, watching the duel unfold. "Oh man, things are getting excited already." he said as he stood up from his seat and walked up to the glass, his hands pressed against it like an intent child looking at an aquarium, in order to get the best view possible. wanted the best view possible. He turned his head and glanced at some of the other competitors he noticed watching from other parts of the arena, whose faces did not show nearly the level of enjoyment his did, before quickly returning his eyes to the action.

The beast-man known as "Hewie" sat alone on his mattress in his hotel room, knees held close to his chest as he watched the first duel of the season commence on the flat-screen. His mind was not on the duel shown before him, but on the first duel that he could potentially have in the tournament. Not just the duel, either. In fact, his mind was scrambling from one thought to the next; how he managed to get an invitation to the tournament, how the dueling world would react to a beast-like duelist, how he managed to get into a 4-Star, "No Animals Allowed" hotel without having animal control and PeTA called in--

"Are you nervous, my son?" Hewie's trainwreck of thought was broken by a familiar, disembodied voice to his left. Though gruff and growling, the voice of his father, Gazelle, was nonetheless calming. "You mustn't fret so much. You'll run yourself ragged and exhausted before your first match."

"... I... I know that, father," said Hewie, attempting a small smile. "This is j-just so... new to me. I've no clue... where to begin...."

"You were chosen because of your dueling ability, my son," reassured Gazelle's voice. "I have full confidence in you, as do your friends both in the city and here in the Spirit World."

My friends.... The thought of the friends he had made over the past few years entered his mind... Luisa... Nathaniel... Umbris... Drake... Wolfram... ... ...

"... father... h... how is Burglar doing?" Hewie asked after a while, referring to the rat-like duel spirit who was he friend for many years.

"... he is doing better," Gazelle replied. "His will to recover is a surprise to many of us."

Hearing this news gave Hewie comfort, and a painful lump in his throat. "... I'm glad," he whispered as his watery eyes let out a few teardrops....

Megumi was in her hotel room unpacking, while watching the duel on the TV. Wow, they're really giving it to each other, she thought and then chuckled at her comment. Both of the duelists seemed very strong, and Megumi wondered who she might be facing in her first duel, maybe one of those boys she had chatted with on the train: Kazuya or Leon? Whoever it would tuen out to be, she could not let her emotions get in the way, not now. As she picked up the last piece of her clothing from the bag, a pair of light blue jeans, like the ones she was wearing, and hung it in the closet, she noticed her Academy Duel Disk, laying at the bottom of the bag. She lifted it up from the bag very carefully, like if it was some sort of delicate porcelain object, and held infront of her. This was the proof of her hard struggle, this Duel Disk. Althought some people wouldn't think so much of it considering it was a Ra Yellow Academy Duel Disk, but the house she had graduated from did not matter to Megumi, only the fact that she had graduated by her own strenght, and not due to anything else. She directed her attention to the TV again, Still going strong you two? She examined the Duel Disk a bit, to see that there were no scratches or dents on it. when she was done she attached it to her left arm, slided the bag under the bed, turned off the TV and walked out of the room. She was going to the Kaiba Dome, to see if she could get a front row seat for the next duel, if it happened to not include her. As she walked down the hallway, towards the elevator, she heared someone talking to themself in one of the rooms she passed. She only stopped for a brief second before continuing. Many duelists were known to talk to there cards, some even claiming that they could her the cards speak to them, ridiculous. She reached the end of the hallway and pressed the elevator button to call the elevator up to her floor. She stood cross-armed and waited.

Kazuya grinned with anticipation. He didn't think that the two would have much energy after a long ride on the train, but the two were going at it like mortal rivals. If this was the caliber of all Duelists in the NDML, he would be in for heck of a time.

Kazuya looked sideways at the other competitors. Some of them looked bored; some interested. One of them, the one on the train, Nathaniel, Kazuya remembered, was watching with a bit of a gleam in his eye. From an overall estimate, he definitely had energy. But there was more to it. Dueling seemed to have "woken" him, as if the intensive action were what was enlivening him. Kazuya had felt almost the same whenever he watched a Duel. There was just some mystical quality to it that pulled at you, inviting you to draw ever closer into the Duel Monsters world.

Kazuya walked over to the seat beside Nathaniel, which was unoccupied. He sat down and for a few moments was content merely to watch the Duel. However as time slipped by, he felt an overwhelming urge to converse with someone. He tapped Nathaniel on the shoulder. Nathaniel's head jerked up, startled.

"Rather exciting duel isn't it?" Kazuya said calmly. "This sort of intensive back and forth clash, it really gets the blood going. Sorry we didn't get to talk on the train earlier. I'm Kazuya. Kazuya Namikawa. I hope we'll both have an enjoyable stay at the NDML."

Sullivan didn't say anything the entire trip, but simply closed his eyes and rested, which seemed odd for such a huge man, but actually made sense to him and most likely a few others. He rarely managed to get opportunities like this to simply relax and work in some serious shut-eye, having to balance both dueling to get into the big leagues and his job as a railroad engineer. He blocked out everything and everyone around him, including the young woman who had taken a seat next to him purely because he had refused to get on the plane, and allowed himself to drift off into slumberland...

Nathaniel felt a tap on his shoulder, and the person who got his attention introduced himself as Kazuya Namikawa. "Well, it's a pleasure to meet you, Kazuya! I'm Nathaniel Hughes, if you didn't hear earlier." he said as he grabbed Kazuya's hand, giving it a firm shake. "And indeed it does. There's nothing like a good duel to have fun and make friends. I've always wanted to be a part of this league ever since I graduated from Duel Academy. I plan on winning it all, but I'm sure that's on everyone's mind." Nathaniel let out a happy chuckle and decided to sit down next to Kazuya.

Lukas was in a fine mess. Rachel's Black Pit would wipe out any monster he summoned with more than 1000 attack points, and that was most of his deck. So there wan't much he could do. "Come one, guys. I need you at your best right now," he whispered to his deck. Hopefully the Darksouls would answer him. "My draw!" he shouted. He looked at his new card. "Alright!" he exclaimed. "I summon Aqua Darksoul in attack mode!" The humanoid fish warrior rose out of the ground in front of him. (ATK 1700) "But master!" Aqua said with a raised voice. "The Black Pit!" "I know, I know. So now, as my monster said, your Field Spell pulls him down." Aqua Darksoul was pulled into Rachel's field spell. "But know his effect activates, so I can draw two cards when he's destroyed by a card effect. He goes..." He drew a card from his deck. "Everything!" He smiled. "I'll activate my face down, Return of the Punished! So now, Aqua will make a return visit at the End Phase. But now..." Lukas paused. "Lets change the setting! I activate Terraforming! So now I'll add a field spell from my deck to my hand-Like this one!" He grabbed a card from his deck. "This new field will wipe out your black pit! I activate Mystic Plasma Zone! Now say bye-bye to your Black Pit!" As black pit was destroyed, dark clouds began to form inside the stadium. Lightning began to leap from the clouds and then arching back up into them. The clouds let a mist fall over the duel field. "This change of set gives all Dark monsters an extra 500 attack and 400 defense--both mine and yours. So enjoy the gift." Every Dark monster on the field began to glow with the given power bonus. "I'll end my turn by switching Mutation Darksoul to defense (DFF 1000+400=1400) and then, Return of the Punished activates, giving me Aqua Darksoul back! (ATK 1700+500=2200). I'll lay down two face-downs, and that's it." Lukas smiled. He was doing pretty good.

Jester looked at the man standing next to him. His name was Kiba, and he was talking to himself about Lukas being a "Born Blue". "Lukas isn't a Born Blue, and that archetype is a little different than what you would think it is," he said. "He's far from a Born Blue. It's a long story." Jester looked over to him. "You shouldn't stereotype."

Yet again Rachel is impressed on how he can turn himself around. "Alright! I draw!" Looked like it would be a great day for her. "Alright! First I play Dimensional Fissure. So now all monsters are banished instead of sent to the grave. Now I tribute my Werewolve! And Welcome forth my Event Horison - Lost Satellite in DEF mode! As long as he's in defense mode, he can't be destroyed by Battle! Also there's more. Lost Satellite gains 500 ATK during each Standby Phase. That includes yours. I end my turn" She looked at her deck. Please let this draw be what I've been waiting for. It'll definitely help me get this first win. It is needed. Rachel stood in anticipation on Luka's move.

After checking with the reception for any new messages, Megumi continued to the Kaiba Dome. Good thing they were booked in a hotel not to far from it, but that must have been the general idea. On her way she saw a group of kids orbiting two other kids who was dueling, it made her smile a bit, knowing how it was to be in their situation, dueling for fun that is.

* * *

Megumi entered the Kaiba Dome Duel Arena and saw that the duel she had been watching from her hotel room had taken an interesting turn: a new Field Spell was in play, and it seemed that one of the duelists had the upper hand, but she did not know for sure. Megumi looked over the audiance bleachers in search for an empty seat, and saw one nearby. Also sitting there was one of the persons she had talked to on the train, Kazuya, who was talking to another person next to him. She approached Kazuya: "Hey Kazuya, sorry to interrupt but could I sit here? Quite the duel wouldn't you say?"

Kazuya looked up to see the person he had met earlier on the train, Megumi. "Sure, sit here. And it really is quite intense. Compared with this, my childhood duels were...for lack of a better word, child's play." Turning his head back to the duel, Kazuya concentrated on rembering the tactics both Duelists had employed. After all, who knew if he'd be going up against them someday? And although he was confident in his skills, he knew one could never be too careful; in dueling, one move could turn the whole duel on its head. Well, no matter, he thought, strategize later. For now, just enjoy this duel.

You're being too naive... A voice stated. Kazuya jerked with surprise. The voice did not belong to anyone nearby, and yet it had sounded as if the person were right next to him. Who...the hell are you? he wondered. There was no answer. Kazuya swiveled his head from side to side, but instinct told him he would not find whoever it was. Sighing, he did his best to put it out of his mind.

"Time for something worth watching!" Lukas cried out. He drew his card. "Yes, yes, YES!" he shouted. "First, I'll activate a face-down. Darksoul Swallow Up! So now, if I control a Darksoul monster, all Spells and Traps are destroyed, like your Dimensional Fissure! And now for the main event! I tribute Mutation and Aqua Darksoul! Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls! Duel fanatics of all ages! I give you the perfect monster! Go forth, Darksoul Kraken!" Lukas's two monsters were absorbed into a large vortex that appeared in the center of the stage. A flash pf dark energy came from it. A large growl came from the depths of the growing vortex. Then a tentacle burst from it, followed by another, and another, and many, many more. The tentacles began to pull a large monster from the bottom of the vortex. A huge black squid wearing a skull mask over its head. (ATK 2800) "Now watch this! I use Kraken's effect! So, I declare a card type and we both draw the top cards of our deck. If either of those cards are that kind of card, it's banished and its controller takes 800 damage. I pick spell!" Lukas flipped over the top card of his deck. "Mine is a trap." He added the card to his hand. "Whats your's, girl?" Lukas smiled greatly.

After watching the duel a bit more, Hewie took hold of the television remote and pressed the power button, causing the flat-screen to go blank as it powered off. May as well get ready, he thought to himself as he headed for the shower....

For Hewie, having to dry himself off took almost as long as washing, at least when he had to do it the "human" way; he would not have liked looking forward to explaining why the walls of the bathroom were dripping wet to the hotel cleaning staff. Dismissing that ridiculous idea, Hewie proceeded to get dressed into his accustomed human attire: a bright green hoodie jacket, a pair of tattered stonewashed jeans and a red-and-black plaid scarf (he was still not accustomed to wearing footwear of any sort. The claws on his feet managed to destroy every kind of closed-toe shoe he had ever tried on, even steel toed boots! Plus, he didn't like sandals all that much since they reminded him of the shoes he accidentally wrecked). As soon as he had finished wrapping the scarf around the lower half of his face, he heard a chime coming from the bedside table. Striding over, he peered down at the prepaid cell phone, which seemed to slide a bit with each simultaneous vibration and chime. Hewie picked up the phone, pressed the "SEND" button and, removing the scarf from his mouth, he answered. "H-hello?"

"Hey! Hewie, it's been a while!" chimed the female voice on the other end. "How's it going?"

"L...Luisa...!" Hewie gasped out, happy to hear a familiar voice (if he had a tail, it would have been wagging at this point). "This is, umm... quite the surprise!"

"Oh, I know, right? I was kinda bored here, so I figured I'd try and call a few people. Umbris told Wildheart who told me that you were chosen to take part in a tournament! Is that true?"

"I-it is," Hewie replied. "I haven't actually started d... dueling yet, but I may have to s... sssoon."

"Well, good luck to you, Hewie," said Luisa. "Me, Wildheart and the others will be rooting for you!"

"Thank... you," said Hewie, the bit of encouragement lifting his spirits and helping to ease his tension. "S... see you later."

"You too, Hewie. I really want to see everyone else again sometime" Luisa replied. "Buh-bye!"

Click! Bzz, bzz, bzz....

... ... ...

A while later, Hewie left his mo-ped in a designated parking area (he was still not used to driving a D-Wheel) and headed inside the Kaiba Dome. As soon as he was at the arena where the duel was taking place, Hewie strode over to a nearby pillar and leaned against it, trying not to make direct eye-contact with anyone else.

Sullivan took his stuff and walked off of the train...and into a flurry of bustling people and vehicles. Signs advertising for practically anything and everything were flashing all around him. Addled from time-lag and confused as to where he is, he stumbled through the streets of New Domino, until he eventually reached a residential complex, and took a breather, enjoying an energy bar he brought with him. Behind the complex was something familiar: A baseball field. He walked around the diamond, simply enjoying the scenery of the city from the park, until he spotted someone approaching with a Duel Disk. He pulled out his own, a beat-up old refurbished Battle City Duel Disk, and prepared to duel.

Leon zoned out on the train and didn't even notice that they had made it to Domino City or even that the trip had zoomed by so fast. He went directly to his room because he felt tired from comming all the way from egypt to this city for a tournement. He dozed off right before the begining of the first duel, but he had his tv still on so his mind would still take in info from the duel. He woke up from his nap feeling better but still tired he looked at the tv and almost had an understanding on what had happened in the duel. he left his room and headed for the steps. He took the stairs down to the lobby exited thourgh the font door and headed for the arena. When he made it to the arena, it seemed as if the duel had pulled a one-eighty. He sat a few rows behind the people he had sat with on the train and studeyed the duel.

Rachel looked in horror. She saw her Fissure get sent to the grave and now she's baring over a strong high level monster. She drew a card slowly. Please let it not be a spell. She drew. Interesting..... Elemental Golem - King of the Flames. She revealed her card to Lukas. "Look here. It's a monster! It's a very strong monster for that matter." Rachel looked into Lukas eyes. He seemed different. It was like something dangerous was coming. Rachel had learned the propose of this deck. It looks like that monster is his trump card. Hopefully that ain't the case, because she could be in trouble if it was.

"Hey Nathaniel, I'm Megumi Tsumi, I remember seeing you on the train to", Megumi has just parked herself on the seat next to Kazuya as the boy Kazuya had been talking to leaned towards her and introduced himself. She smiled a bit at his talking to much statement, "No no, it's okay, rather have a talker than a mute, and I guess you're right, about having to fight against people you will most likely make a strong bond with, it will not be easy!" Megumi watched as the duel escalated even further, now a huge savage with many tentacles had taken to the field. "Both these guys seems outrageously strong, can't tell which one I'm rooting for anymore." The thought to whom she would have to fight in her first duel and how strong they would be came to mind again. She knew she had made it into the NDML for a reason, that being her dueling skills, but that was the case for every person who was in this tournament. "Do you know how many people that's currently in this tournament?" She wasn't really looking for an answer, just small talk, trying to keep her mind on something else.

Lukas laughed. "You got lucky that time, girl! And now I wont hold back!" He broke out in evil laughter. Then someone placed a hand on his shoulder. Lukas turned to his side to see Gaia Darksoul. "Don't lose control, Lukas. Don't let a Darksoul limited as Kraken posses you. He is weak compared to others. Calm yourself, Lukas. Do not let darkness take hold." As Gaia said these words, a calm energy flowed through Lukas. "I...I'm sorry...It's just...I haven't exerted so much power in a while...Kraken's spirit overwhelmed me..." Lukas whispered. "I understand," Gaia said soothingly. "Right now, you just need to win." Lukas nodded. "Kraken, you ready?" he shouted to his monster. Kraken looked back, and with a hissing voice said, "Of course! I've been waiting for you to ask! Say the words, and I will show this foolish girl the extent of your power!" Again, Lukas nodded. He hoped an attack wouldn't cause him to be controlled by Kraken's energy again. "Let's do this! Kraken, attack Lost Satellite with..." and then he stopped. Gaia had grabbed his arm. " Lost Satellite is invulnerable to attacks when in defense, remember?" Gaia reminded him. Lukas groaned. "Forgot your monsters invincible." Kraken groaned. "I don't get to destroy it?" Lukas shook his head. "Afraid not. I set two cards and end my turn. Once again, you're going to lose. Badly. Very badly. No one gets in my way of the future."

Rachel laughed. She couldn't believe he forgot about her Satellite couldn't be destroy by battle in DEF mode. Rachel picked a card from her deck. It was Heavy Storm. Well.... I can finish him this turn. "Alright. First, during each standby phase my Satellite gain 500 ATK. That means during mine and yours. So he has 1000 ATK. I'm sure this ain't news to you, but when Lost Satellite is sent to the graveyard or banished. Half the ATK is dealt to you. And here's the main event. I tribute my Satellite to summon my Elemental Golem - King of the Flames! Now here's the deal. First, you take 500 Life points of damage from my Satellites effect(Luka's LP: 2100). Now when my king is tribute summoned by tributing a Event Horison monster, then all monsters on the field get returned to the owners hand except this card. So your Kraken is outta here! Now to top it off! I play Heavy Storm!" a big tornado broke into the field wiping out Luka's face-downs. "Now! Elemental Golem - King of the Flames! Finish him!" the blazing golem charged for Lukas. Lukas toke the hit getting blasted back a foot or 2. Rachel walked up to Lukas. "Good game man. You had me scared a few times" She held out her hand for a hand shake.

Roman Smiled to himself. High from the stands, slightly leaning over the railing, he just witnessed the first duel of the National Leauge and boy was it intense! Both duelist put up a good fight, going back and forth the enitre game. At any given moment it was truly either ones duel, yet he somehow knew it was Rachel that would take the win. However despite this thought , Lukas summoning Darksoul Krakan had. . .unsettled him. An air of danger had settled around the duelist, threatening to swallow not only Lukas, but his opponent as well. But just as this dangerous air appeared, it had vanished just as quickly. Roman tensed his brow and ran a hand threw his wild hair. "The duelist here at the pro leauge are definitetly. . .interesting," he thought out loud. "Does all the Duel Academy students have that kind of energy? Rachel certainly did too." He continued to watch the scene unfold below, just in case anything else interesting happened.

Lukas stood with his eyes wide. How could he let this happen? He had it all planned out...it was impossible. He slapped away Rachel's hand. "I guess you deserve some respect...so does your deck. I can hear your cards rejoicing. Meanwhile, my cards are the same as me. I didn't think you could do it. You are truly an amazing duelist." He pulled out his deck. "Here." He handed her Aqua Darksoul. "I have a couple of these. It could work good in your deck, but I doubt he'll get along with you cards." Lukas smiled. "It was an amazing duel, anyway. I hope we duel again some day...maybe the finals." he looked up to the crowd. "YOU GOT THAT EVERYONE?" He shouted. "I'M COMING FOR YOU ALL! I HAVE MONSTERS THAT DWARF KRAKEN NOT ONLY IN SIZE, BUT ALSO POWER!" He smiled. "It's true. Lukas DeMunly can't be stopped twice...not in a million years! You're all dead. You've seen what I do!" He looked back at Rachel. She seemed...nicer than other people he had met. "You're..." He stopped. "I'll see you later." Lukas actually managed a smile, one not from victory. "JESTER! GET ME A SEAT! AND GET US A HOTEL ROOM WITH YOUR PHONE!" He smiled at Rachel. "I hope my...dark...you know what I mean. Well, I hope it didn't freak you out, Rachel." He looked away. "I'm out." He walked up to the stands, ready to watch the next duel.

Kiba had heard what the man near him had said about not stereotyping and he knew that it was true so he gave the man a nob and then continued to watch the duel... Finally the duel ended and he say the bad attitude come up and looked over to the man , "Are you sure he isn't a born blue, because the way he acted when he lost and the fact that he didn't even think that his opponent was planning leads me to think he is."

Mathias watched the end of the duel and wasn't surprised he had just finished his last script and checked his D-Pad "So I'll be the next one to face him, well if he ignores my moves like he did his last opponents it should be an easy win."
