Tentacruel
Welcome to the topic where we discuss what normally derails topics here in Music. Different genres of Rock and who plays what. To start us off with a topic, let's go for a common topic discussed my metalheads. Just what the hell is Children of Bodom? Some people say Melodeath. Some people say Power Metal. Others say Thrash. Some of their music is classified as Neo-Classical Metal. Others still classify their earlier work as Black Metal, and are usually laughed at for the notion. GO GO GO! John A. Zoidberg
CoB? It all really depends on which song. Songs like If You Want Peace... Prepare for War are more thrashy. Songs like are you death are more melodeath. They really don't have a base in one specific genre.
The Amazing Avian
No they do not. Depends on the song really, but for the most part Melodeath and Thrash sum them up.
Tentacruel
I also agree. What about the new In Flames stuff? It's usually categorized along with melodeath but I certainly wouldn't call it that. It doesn't sound like Nu Metal or Metalcore either like some people say. John A. Zoidberg
In flames was Melodeath up to STTYE in my opinion. From then on, pure unoriginal metalcore. They went from being one of the most influential melodeath bands ever to a generic metalcore band with nothing entirely interesting about them. Tentacruel
I don't really consider it metalcore though. It has far too much chord variance and not enough chugging breakdowns. I'd almost rather just say it's Alt Metal as a general umbrella term. I wouldn't say it's unoriginal Metalcore. A lot of their stuff sounds nothing like typical Metalcore. I mean sure, it's a hell of a lot less heavy, sure. But they're still enjoyable pop songs. Compare the two. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7rivf9yfRtE http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KTiQ75HY0DA
John A. Zoidberg
Deliver Us was the wrong example to aid your argument though, since the entire verse is just chugging power-chords.
Tentacruel
I suppose, but I wouldn't call it generic metalcore, it's got more of a groove then your average core band. You could call it metalcore though. So what about this song? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O1FkbvGl-IU
John A. Zoidberg
Take this life is... ugh. I don't even know. It's like, not melodeath at all, but it's also not really metalcore. I might go with just straight Death Metal with that one.

Most metalcore has a few breakdowns here and there but mostly the breakdown-fest metalcore bands you're thinking of are scene bands. Try some Darkest Hour, Poison The Well, (early) From Autumn To Ashes, Evergreen Terrace, Zao or Converge.
Agreed with you bout them from being a very influential melodeath bands to a run off the mill metalcore band but even as a metalcore band they're still great and probably one of the better bunch in a genre that was overtaken by generic and scene bands. Anyway, hate to see the mod locking this thread up since the discussion is mainly on metal and we do have the official metal thread so, move on to the next subject. Melodic hardcore. People usually associate melodic hardcore with punk as it would be between hardcore punk and punk rock and the description for melodic hardcore also state it to be that way
Melodic Hardcore: Punk rock with hardcore beats and riff
what do you guys think about that? Tentacruel
I don't listen to a lot of underground music, so the only example I can think of offhand is Rise Against. They're melodic and are definitely a punk band but I'm not sure if that makes them melodic hardcore.
Poc
Melodic hardcore sounds like an oxymoron. For a band to be melodic they need to have melody in there songs. Most hardcore is just CHUG CHUG CHUG SLAM SLAM SLAM.
John A. Zoidberg
What would you guys classify Circa Survive as? Most people say Progressive Rock (which I know IS a massive genre), but it doesn't seem like that's quite what it is. Oh, and Converge isn't really metalcore. They have some influence on the genre metalcore, but they're mostly Hardcore Punk/occasionally Mathcore.
Tentacruel
I would say indie rock or something of that sort. Definitely not prog, but experimental in it's own right.
John A. Zoidberg
I mean, I guess by a stretch you could call them Experimental Indie-Rock. But that's probably just creating a genre.
Mr.Robot
Probably thanks to Circa Survive, bands like Tides Of Man and Closure In Moscow got label as progressive rock as well and both bands have vocals that sounds ala Anthony Green but I don't hate them by any means, I love all the 3 bands. They might just be Indie Rock with some experimental elements into them, plus, if you listen to Circa Survive, Tides Of Man and Closure In Moscow and then you listen to some late 80's/early 90's Post Hardcore bands you can deduce them as a very advance version of those. Anyway, Anthony Green was in The Sound Of Animals Fighting, right? That sound's more progressive than Circa to me. As for the Converge are they metal or are they not?, well, they sound like very early, early metalore just like Botch but they more technical with some hardcore punk influence so that might explain why some would put them into the mathcore area. Tentacruel
So what would you call this? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sqTNttO9FI8&feature=player_embedded
Poc
Melodeath would be the closest thing I could think of, they have some metalcore elements too.
John A. Zoidberg
Anthony Green was in The Sound of Animals Fighting. That's probably my favorite project of his, but they haven't released enough for me to listen very often. Circa Survive has a decent amount of stuff out, so I listen to them more. I also still wouldn't call Converge metalcore. It definitely had some influence on the genre, that's definitely true, but I would still call them Hardcore Punk. Mr.Robot
Well, ok then. Let's just agreed that Converge is hardcore punk that's a big influence to metalcore. Anyway, would you call this skramz music or basically straight up hardcore?
