NeoTwice
Okay, so I realize that I've already lost about 60% of prospective viewers to this tread simply because of the topic title, but the fact of the matter is that Pokemon is still very popular, and is something that I would like to attempt to translate into Yu-Gi-Oh as best as possible. Now, I haven't actually got any full cards written out yet, but I'm trying to brainstorm the best possible way to utilize Pokemon in the Yu-Gi-Oh TCG, so that's why there are no cards for you to judge at this stage, but any comments on the systems I'm looking to develop are still welcome. So what makes Pokemon such an attractive concept? That's easy: Gotta Catch 'em All! Problem is that in this game, you only want 40 cards in your deck. Subtract about 20 for spells and traps, then add 15 for the extra deck and you're left with only 35 monsters. Once you've doubled or tripled up on your 'Pokemon staples', that leaves you with probably around 10-15 different Pokemon in your deck. It's obvious that "Gotta Catch 'em All" doesn't translate to Yu-Gi-Oh. Therefore, the most attractive aspect of Pokemon is probably evolution, so I'm looking for the best way to 'Evolve' your Yu-Gi-Oh Pokemon. Now, we've seen evolution monsters in Yu-Gi-Oh before but they all share a common weakness. They're situational. You either want them to stay in your deck to special summon them from there, or you need them in your hand at precisely the right time in the duel. In my opinion, an ideal method for bringing Pokemon evolution into Yu-Gi-Oh is to utilize the extra deck instead of having too many high-level or Nomi monsters in your deck that offer dead draws. The only problem I see with the extra deck is that regardless of the method you're using, be it Fusion, Synchro, or Xyz, all of the monsters there require 2 or more monsters to be summoned the correct way (i.e. not using cards like Instant Fusion or Metamorphosis). Pokemon don't work this way... when a Pokemon evolves, it does it on it's own (excluding anime style evolutions of Pokemon such as Slowpoke-Slowbro and Magnemite-Magneton). Therefore, I'm trying to think of the best way to use the extra deck to this end. Ideally, Xyz monsters would be somehow used, as that way the basic Pokemon isn't sent to the Graveyard to be reused, but is 'part' of the evolved form, but having a Xyz monster that only requires 1 material would be very broken unless it was restricted somehow. Obviously the first restriction you would put in place is the basic Pokemon having to be a specific monster, but even then they would be too fast. I wonder if the following would work:
Effect Monster - Level 4

Xyz Monster - Rank 6 1 "Charmander" with 2 Exp. Counters.
Then we just devise a way to throw Exp. Counters at the basic Pokemon, probably when it battles, inflicts damage, or destroys a monster. We ignore the "Rank must equal Level" thing, or circumvent it by raising the Basic Pokemon's level 1 for each Exp. Counter on it, and I think that might just give us a credible evolution method. I've been thinking about this for quite a while, and this is the best I can come up with, but please tell me if you think it's a good/great/bad/horrible idea, and please give me your comments and suggestions, as I'm very eager to hear them. Premier Alexander Romanov
NOT. IN. HERE. For the last time, this is not the place for Pop Culture Cards! Link to comment
NeoTwice
Wow. Ok, I'm sorry. I assumed that this was where to put any cards, regardless of topic, that have not been made into images yet, as the forum description suggests. I'm mistaken. Could somebody move this to an appropriate location please? Link to comment
Agro
No, this is right. As long as it's written, it's supposed to be here. But your cards aren't even written. You only have a name for a card and it's level. There isn't enough here for you to say you're even posting CARDS. Link to comment
NeoTwice
I thought that might be an issue, but at this stage I'm just trying to nut out the basis of the cards... Ideally I'd put it in a "Discussion about creating cards" kind of forum, but there isn't anything like that from what I can see here. I thought this section was the closest alternative.
