I actually found the "twist endings" of, say, Vengeful Ghost, Crimson Jackal, Warden and most notably It'll Be Fine, to just be off-putting and making the story worse. They added nothing to the plot except confusion, and didn't provide a satisfying conclusion whatsoever. I didn't find Quiksilver's story "obvious" either, less so than the others.

To me, there's two different kinds of horror. The first is superficial; the kind that makes you shiver in fear and excitement when you read it. Then, there's enduring horror: the kind that you have nightmares about for weeks and make you scared to even finish reading the damned thing. I personally aim for the latter when I write horror, but I don't think I achieved it.
Really? That's interesting.

For me, and this is just from watching endless s*** horror films, not many stories in that area seem to ever have any plot, and its just a precession of competitors for the most gorey and stomach churning death. Its all BANG BANG BANG for no reason. That's why I don't like the genre usually, although I haven't read many horror books. But I remember reading a book at school called 'The Book of Nasty Endings' which was a series of unrelated shorts that that all had a nasty surprise, but you could have suspected if you paid attention. That's kind of what I went for and was originally confident in, but reading subsequent entries I fell well short.

So I'm not surprised if people shot for it and fell short.

@matt: I kept trying to read the stories and find a meaning in them, but I couldn't shake the feeling that people just looked for trying to scare people. I almost didn't vote because of that.

That would fall under superficial horror. I would honestly recommend Stephen King if you want some of that enduring, better, horror. You have probably watched and/or heard of some of the movie adaptions: The Shining or Shawshank Redemption come to mind?

First of his works I read was The Drawing of The Three, which also happens to be my favorite part of the Dark Tower series, and The Stand would be his magnus opus. He released a collection of short stories not too long ago called Full Dark, No Stars, which has proven to be an enjoyable read so far. It's as good an entry-point to King's works as any.

Wasn't The Mist one, too?

How on earth does The Shawshank Redemption fall under horror?

Yeah I didn't attempt for deep meaning, I just went for jumpy twist horror and I admit that, over-complicated plot in 1000 words would not have worked. Even Kyubey said simplicity is a great tool in horror, but you have to couple it with reason which horrors I've seen... don't...

Btw nice to see Umbra and our leader Star back posting in here.

That was more of a reference to King's works in general, but I can definitely see some horror elements. Being imprisoned for X amount of years, the beatings, the oppressive Warden, that one kid being sniped which shows that the Warden won't stop at anything, the old man hanging himself just because he couldn't stand life outside, the creepy-as-hell prisoner that killed Andy's wife and her lover, the scene before we find out that Andy managed to escape...

I'm probably forgetting a lot - I'm just citing things from the movie, which I haven't seen in a few years now. The book probably has a lot more that didn't make it into the movie. (I've heard of a rape scene, which wouldn't surprise me at all.)

Yeah there was all that stuff and more in the film, just was confused by you saying it was a horror film. Thought we were talking about different stories.

Well lets agree that Shawshank doesn't really fit under one category; except one:

Brilliant.

Yeah, but for the reason Aggro mentioned, we don't talk about The Mist.
-___- Waaiiiiiit... that was a reason?

Anyway, I tried simply to base my story as much around the idea of the abject as I could. Figured my goal wasn't to scare people, just to raise the hairs on their necks. I hate horror movies BTW, the week no one at the theatre I work at went to see Final Destination 5, I was the happiest person imaginable.

Also: I haven't seen the shawshank redemption. :3 *is brutally murdered* I'll get around to it eventually. But I have seen the ending *Is pieced back together, murdered again, and tossed into a ditch*

Anyway, I'm looking for some opinions here. With Season 3 about halfway done, I've been throwing around some ideas for the final Season of Hidden Legacy, Grand Tournament.

Basically, what I've come up with revolves around a major tournament (yeah, I know that aspect has been used, but still), involving all the characters, plus plenty of new ones. The antagonists here would be a group of seven duelists (yes, again, GX, Shadow Riders), each from a different planet, making up the Duel Terminal archetypes. The story goes that their planet was destroyed by Trishula, who was placed there via human means (that much is elaborated on as Season 3 concludes, so I don't want to spoil it), and they plan to use Earth as a place to restablish their species. For those of you who do follow Hidden Legacy, you'd know that the Ice Barrier has been established as an individual realm, which means they're not considered part of the villains, per se. I still have half a Season to finish before I can even write this, but still.

Get. The. f***. Out...

Okay seriously its an amazing film.

Side note from the horror contest: 2 weeks after being locked Armageddon finally dropped off of page 1 of the fanfic section. (Had about 3,000 views and a rep in that time too, makes me very happy). Have been reviewing a lot of newer stroies and there's a lot of fanfics there at the minute which look flash in the pan-ish and won't be making it past chapter 2 or 3, which is sad.

I understand why people give up but... I dunno I guess there's just nothing really out there other than Hidden Legacy, the Naruto fic or T.E.D's new fic which I'm quietly confident will go further that look like seeing another chapter any time soon, which worries me.

That title sounds familiar.

While a tournament plot is very overdone, your twist on it sounds interesting, and I like that the backgrounds of the Duel Terminal archetypes are being explored rather than the seven duelists just having some kind of uniting theme regarding their decks.

I know. I don't like the blatant KC ripoff; maybe a better name?

I mean the way it works without spoiling much of Season 3 is that the Ice Barrier people knew the planet would be destroyed, so they left and became a separate world before it happened. I definitely have a lot of interesting ideas for the context of the Season, but I don't want it to seem like it's cliche or copying, especially not for the last season which would end up being like 40 episodes, bringing the total of Hidden Legacy episodes to 150 by the time it was done.

Aggro, almost three weeks, broski.

I know because I look forward to your new episode postings as something to do during math, but I've found myself actually having to learn.

>_>

In my defense, Math is an awful, awful subject and the only class I'm doing poorly in.
Then drop i- oh right, you're still in high school :3

I'll see what I can do, I'm currently writing the more important scenes in the series so I can get out chapters faster.

I completely forgot about that tournament, actually, but I was thinking about my tournament. Look at my signature. As for what your tournament should be called, consider whoever is hosting the tournament and what they would call it.

I think I've read a couple chapters of your series, but I suppose I'll have to find time to read Hidden Legacy and Umbra's The Dark Doorway.

Math becomes a gradually more useless subject as you advance through school. I mean, yes, you can learn stuff crucial to your career choice, but then all that does is limit the uses of the subject.

Alright, because Star is dying through Math class, I've decided to do whatever I can to churn out some sort of chapter before Zelda comes out and I lose all my time.

No, it's my first year in college. Doesn't mean I can't hate it.
