syntheticsetty
If you can't tell by the title, this is a reboot of an old fan fic I started. I only had 4 chapters done but i decided to start the story over, change a few details and write some more, so enjoy and comment what you think.
Prologue Every generation has their top Duelist, A duelist who can seem to pull the card they need at the exact time they need it. One who places his heart in every duel; One who does not crack under pressure and can make Good Decisions in short amounts of time. The most well known is the Duelist Yugi Moto. He was only a sophomore when he defeated Seto Kaiba and became the new World Champion. Then he went on to defeat Pegasus J. Crawford, the creator of the game, to become the King of Games. There were many other duelists that tried and have failed to become the new King of Games, but none of them came close to throwing Yugi off of his thrown. I did know a handful of Duelist that came close to it, but none of them succeeded. There was one man who made me so proud to see him duel. The way his heart was in perfect harmony with his deck. His name was Zack Knight. He was 17 when I first met him, a little headstrong and reckless but always there when you needed someone. His best friend was Todd Jones, from which he knew since they were children, decided to take up gaming one day and came across the card game Duel Monsters. Both of them liked the game so much that they decided to make more of a hobby about it and started going to tournaments every Saturday after they got off work. They didn’t win many matches so they decided to work on their decks more before going back to the tournament, and said that they would show everyone that you should build a deck out of cards you enjoy playing with more than just what you know will win. Half of the fun in the game is making a deck that symbolizes and reflects who the duelist is on the inside.

Chapter 1 – The Tournament The story begins back when I was only 12 years old, still new to the Duel Monsters game. I decided that I was going to go to a tournament to test my skills and see if I could trade some cards that I had pulled from packs the day before. I walked into the store and looked around. I saw many people dueling, trading, and all sorts of stuff. I walked up to the counter. "Sir?" I said out loud, trying to get the man behind the counters attention. He turned around and said "How can I help you today young lad?" I pulled five dollars out of my pocket and put it on the counter in front of me. "I’m here for the tournament." He looked at me up and down then took the bill from the counter and placed it in his cash register. He pulled out a booster box of cards and said, "Go ahead and pick two packs. Everyone gets two packs when they enter and one additional one every round he makes it through." "Or she makes it through!" came a voice from behind me. I turned around and noticed that there was a girl behind me. "That’s right Miranda," the game owner said with a chuckle. "I’m sorry I forgot about you. There isn’t to many girls that play this game." I grabbed my two packs and walked away while they were getting into a conversation. I wondered around until I found an empty spot at a table and sat down. I reached for the packs that I had placed in my pocket and pulled them out. I ripped the first one open and started flipping through the cards. Nothing out of the ordinary. I was never lucky when it came to packs. I set the cards aside and pulled out the second pack. As I ripped the top of the pack off, the door to the store opened. I glance over and saw two guys walk in. One had short brown spiky hair and green eyes. The other had Short messy brown hair and brown eyes. Both had their decks ready by their waist. They walked over to the empty spots next and me and sat down. The one with green eyes sat down next to me and looked over in my direction. He saw that I was opening packs and asked "Are you here for the tournament?" I nodded, as he extended his hand toward me. "Good Luck." He said as I gave him hand shake. "My name is Zack, and the one over there is Todd." He pointed to the man that walked in with him. "Have you played in a Tournament before?" He asked me, as he started to take is deck out. "No, this is my first time playing in one." I stated as I looked down at the pack I had just opened. "That’s cool. It’s always fun to start out. I remember my first tournament." He said as he turned away to talk to Todd. I pulled out the cards that were still in the pack and started flipping through them. It was just as before, nothing new, until I came to the end. I dropped the last card out of my hand on the table when I looked at it. Zack turned back toward me and looked down at the card. He reached over and picked it up, then looked at me and handed the card back to me. "Wow, what a pull." He said as I still was looking at the card in amazement. It was the earth dragon, Des Volsgalph. Only a few were made and I couldn’t believe I got one. I snapped the card in my deck and started shuffling. "Well, the tournaments about to start." Said Zack, as he rose from his chair. "Good luck again, I’m sure you’ll do great." He walked away. I walked over to the bracket and checked the pairings. I was paired with a guy named Chris at table number 8. I turned around and started wondering around trying to find out where my opponent would be. I passed by many duelist that have already taken there seats and were setting up the play field. I continued walking when I bumped into someone. "Watch it!" I looked up and saw that it was the girl from earlier, Miranda. "I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to."I said to her apologetically. "It’s all right." She said back as she walked away. I stood there for a minute when someone came up from behind me. "Hey man, you lost?" I turned around to see Zack standing there. "Yeah." I said embarrassed. "I don’t know where table 8 is." He pointed over to a table in the corner of the store. "It’s over there. You better hurry, times running out." "Thanks." I said as I quickly headed in the direction of the table. I sat down and put my deck on the table in front of me, eager to begin. I looked across the table and all I saw was an empty chair. A man, I presumed the judge, walked in the middle of the room and took a handheld clock from a table near him. "The time is set for 30 minutes. All duels must be completed by the end of the time. If they are not, the duelist with the most life points moves on to the next round. Time starts now!" I looked back across the table and still no one was sitting there. I got up and walked toward the judge. "Sir." I said as I reached him. "Yes, can I help you?" he asked. "My opponent didn’t show up and…" The judge motioned me to stop and looked around. After making sure everyone else had an opponent he looked back at me and said "Well I guess you’re getting a bye." I looked at him confused. "What’s a bye?" I asked. "It’s when an opponent doesn’t show up and no one else can be pared with you. You move on to the next round without dueling." I thanked him and wondered around, trying to find something to do. Then I remembered Zack was dueling. I started to walk until I happened to come across Zack dueling against someone. So, I decided to sit down and watch the duel. Zack Life Point – 5600 Cards in Hand – 3 Cards in Play • Skilled Dark Magician - Level 4; Atk: 1900/Def: 1700 in Attack Mode - Spell Counters: 1 • 1 Facedown Magic/Trap Card Lance Life Points – 6100 Cards in Hand -2 Cards in Play • Tribe infecting Virus - Level 4; Atk: 1600/Def: 1000 in Attack Mode - Level 3; Atk: 1800/Def: 1200 with A Legendary Ocean in Play. • A Legendary Ocean - Field Spell Card It was Zack’s turn. He placed his hand on his deck and drew the top card into his hand. He scanned his hand and grabbed a card from it and placed it into play. "I activate my spell card, Monster Reincarnation. It lets me discard any card from my hand and select a monster card from my graveyard and add it to my hand." He picked a card from his hand and set it face up in his graveyard, and picked his graveyard up and searched through it. He finally came upon the card he was looking for and placed it into his hand. He then replaces his graveyard and picked his hand back up. "I now will summon my Breaker the Magical Warrior." He placed the monster card from his hand into play. "When this monster is summoned he gains a spell counter. I can then remove one spell counter from it to destroy a spell or trap card on your side of the field and I choose your Legendary Ocean Card." Lance picked up his card and moved it to the graveyard. Zack continued "I now activate another spell card, Monster Reborn. It lets me resurrect a monster that was sent to the graveyard. I choose the monster I sent there with my Monster Reincarnation card, my Dark Magician Girl (Attack: 2000)." He grabbed the card and placed it into play. "I use the special ability of my Skilled Dark Magician. Since he now has 3 spell counters, I can sacrifice him to search my deck or graveyard for my Dark Magician and summon him in attack mode." Zack switched the Skilled Dark Magician he had in play for the Dark Magician (Attack: 2500) from his graveyard. "Now for my last spell card, Magical Dimension. I have to have a spellcaster monster in play in order to activate this card. I sacrifice one monster I control to special summon a spellcaster monster from my hand. I sacrifice my Breaker the Magical Warrior to summon my Dark Red Enchanter (Attack: 1700). Another ability of Magical Dimension is that when I summon the new monster I can destroy a monster on the field. I choose your Tribe Infecting Virus." Lance took the last card on his field and placed it in his graveyard. "I now attack with all three of my monsters for combined attack strength of 6200!" "No Way, that whips me out!" said Lance, in astonishment. I went to congratulate Zack on his victory but I was interrupted by the timer. Thirty minutes have passed and its time to see who moved on and who got knocked out. I made my way over to the bracket, which by now was surrounded by duelist checking to see who their next opponent was. Once I finally broke through the crowd, I searched the bracket for my name. My opponent would be…" My finger fell on the duelist’s name. "Todd Jones!" That’s the man that came in with Zack. Beside me came Zack to check his opponent. He skimmed through the list and rushed off to his table. I looked back at the roster to check my table number. Number three this time. I turned to go to my table when again I bumped into someone. "Watch it!" said the figure. "Sorry." I replied back. I looked up and saw Miranda again. "I bumped into you before didn’t I?" She asked. "Yeah, that was me." I replied. "Well, sorry about that." She said "But I’m in a hurry the judge is going to start the next round soon." She turned and rushed away. I practically ran to my seat, where Todd was waiting, to make it in time. I sat down opposite of him. "You’re the kid Zack was talking to right?" He asked as he pulled his deck out. "Yeah." I said as taking my deck out and started to shuffle. "Good Luck." He said. I replied back good luck as well as we finished setting up the field. The judge then walked out and took the timer out again. "Time is set for thirty minutes. Let the duels begin." He said in a familiar tone. Todd pulled a coin from his pocket. "Heads or tails?" He asked as he tossed it in the air. "Heads!" I quickly responded. The coin hit the table and spun a few times before finally coming to an end. It landed on heads. "I choose to go first." I said as I was drawing my opening hand. I then drew a card for my turn. I looked at the cards residing in my hand; Polymerization, Summoned Skull, Monster Reborn, Waboku, Dark Hex Sealed Fusion, and Dragon Nails. I decided to start off strong, "I use my polymerization card to fuse my Summoned Skull card and my Dark Hex Sealed Fusion." I moved Summoned Skull, Dark Hex Sealed Fusion, and Polymerization to my graveyard and grabbed my Black Skull Dragon (Attack: 3200) from my fusion deck. "I’ll play him in attack mode." I said as I placed him on the field in the proper position. "Then I activate Dragon Nails, It’s an equipment spell card that raises my dragons attack from 3200 to 3800!" I set my equip spell below my dragon then proceeded with my turn. "I now will set one card face down and end my turn." Todd didn’t look worried at all. He drew a card from his deck and placed it into his hand. He looked at his hand for a minute then looked at me, as he selected a card from his hand and put it into play. "I summon my Goblin Attack force. (Attack: 2300) Then I will activate my magic card Double Summon. It allows me to normal summon two monsters in one turn." He placed the card in the graveyard and went back to his hand. "I choose to summon my Gearfried the Iron Knight (Attack: 1800). Now I’m activating my spell card, Gift of the Martyr. It let’s me sacrifice one monster to increase the attack of another monster I control by the sacrificed monsters attack." He picked his Goblin Attack Force up and moved it to the graveyard. "I choose my Goblin Attack Force. Now my Gearfried has 4100 attack points until the end phase of this turn. Now I attack your dragon!" "Not so fast, I activate my trap card, Waboku. This card prevents all damage dealt to me and my monsters this turn so my dragon is safe." I moved my trap to the graveyard. Todd smiled and said "Good defense. I’ll set one card facedown and end my turn." I drew a card and checked my hand. Monster Reborn and Des Volsgalph. "I activate my Monster Reborn card to bring my Dark Hex Sealed Fusion back from the graveyard. (Defense: 1600). I’ll now sacrifice it for my Des Volsgalph." I placed my newly acquired card into play. (Attack: 2200) "I now will attack your Gearfried with my Des Volsgalph." He flipped over his facedown card to reveal a spell card. "I’ll use my spell card Shrink. It reduces your monsters attack by half." My Des Volsgalph attack dropped from 2200 to 1100. "My Des Volsgalph also has an ability. Whenever my opponent or I activate a spell, his attack raises by 200." "My monster’s still stronger." Todd said as I moved my new card to the graveyard. "I’ll now attack with my Black Skull Dragon, for 3800." Todd moved Gearfried to the graveyard and pulled a calculator out of his pocket and set his life points up. "I end my turn." Narrator Life Points – 7500 Cards in Hand – 0 Cards in Play • Black Skull Dragon - Level 9; Atk 3200/Def: 2500 in Attack Mode - Level 9; Atk 3800/Def: 2500 with Dragon Nails • Dragon Nails – Equipped to Black Skull Dragon Todd Life Points – 6000 Cards in Hand – 1 Cards in Play None Todd drew a card and looked at the two cards that now make up his hand. "I’ll activate my spell card, Pot of Greed. It lets me draw 2 cards from my deck." He tossed Pot of Greed to the graveyard and drew 2 cards. "I know will activate my Monster Reborn card. I will bring back my Gearfried the Iron Knight." "That monster wasn’t strong enough before, what makes you think he can be a help now?" I asked. "Because," he continued "I have this card to go with him. My spell card Release Restraint. I have to have Gearfried in play to use this spell. It lets Gearfried transform into Gearfried the Sword Master." He moved his Gearfreed in play to his graveyard and picked his deck up and started searching it. When he finally got to the card he placed it into play and shuffled and replaced his deck. "I summon my Gearfried the Sword Master." (Attack: 2600) "My monsters attack points are still higher than yours Todd." I said after comparing them. "That may be true but my monster has a special ability. Whenever I equip a card, I can destroy a monster on your side of the field." "Is the last card in your hand an equip card?" I asked, even though I already knew the answer. "Yes it is. I activate my equip card, Fusion Sword Murasame Blade. It will increase the attack of my monster by 800 and destroy your monster." I moved my dragon and my equip card to the graveyard. "I’ll now attack directly with my monster." I deducted my life points by 3400. Narrator Life Points – 4100 Cards in Hand – 0 Cards in Play None Todd Life Points – 6000 Cards in Hand – 0 Cards in Play • Gearfried the Sword Master - Level 7; Atk 2600/Def: 2200 in Attack Mode - Level 7; Atk 3400/Def: 2200 with Fusion Sword Murasame Blade • Fusion Sword Murasame Blade – Equipped to Gearfried the Sword Master. It was my turn. I closed my eyes and drew a card, knowing that I needed a miracle to pull this off. I prayed that something great came to me. I slowly opened my eyes knowing that this would be it. I took a breath of fresh air when I saw what I got. I drew my Card of Sanctity. "I activate my Card of Sanctity. Both of us draw until we have six cards in our hands." We both starting drawing cards from our deck until the number was reached. I scanned my hand for something that might help me take down his warrior. I came across a spell that would do just that. "I activate my spell card, Tribute to the Doomed. I have to discard a card from my hand to use this card but in exchange I can destroy a monster on the field. So say goodbye to your sword master." He moved his monster and equip to the graveyard. I knew that he was going to have something to really hurt me when his turn came around so I have to as much damage to him now as I can. "I summon this, my Dark Blade (Attack: 1800). That’s not all, I’m using my equip spell card Megamorph to double his attack since my life points are lower than yours. Now I’m going to attack you directly." Todd went to his calculator and reduced his life to 2400. "I’ll finish up my turn by setting two cards facedown." Todd draws a card for his turn and looks at his seven new cards. "I’ll start with my spell card, Heavy Storm. It will destroy all spell and traps on the field." I moved my two facedown cards and my Megamorph card to the graveyard. "Then I will activate another spell card, my Soul Taker Spell. It destroys a monster on your field and grants you 1000 life points in exchange." I moved my Dark Blade away and increased my life points to 5100. "Now I activate Cost Down. By discarding a card from my hand, I reduce the level of all monsters in my hand by two until the end phase. I can now summon my Prenumbral Soldier Lady without a tribute. (Attack: 2100) "I’ll now set one card facedown and attack directly with my warrior." He said as he placed the final card in his hand face down on the field. Again I was down to nothing. My life points were only 3000 and I had no cards out or in my hand. I placed my hand on my deck and drew a card. It was my favorite card, the Celtic Guardian. "I’m setting a monster in defense mode and ending my turn." Todd drew a card and placed it into play. "I summon my Axe Raider (Attack: 1700) and I’ll attack your facedown monster with my Axe Raider." I flipped up my monster and compared his defense to Axe Raiders attack. My defense was only 1200, so I moved my card to the graveyard. "I’ll now attack with my soldier lady." My life points reduced to 900. Déjà vu. No cards and even lower life points than before. I drew the card from the top of my deck. It was a spell card called Monster Reincarnation. I couldn’t use the card effect to help me, so I had no choice but to pass. Todd drew his card. "This was a good duel. My Axe Raider will attack and take away the rest of your life points." My life points reduced to zero. "Good game." We both said as we cleaned up our decks. "Good luck in your next match." I said as I extended my arm for a hand shake. "Thanks." He replied returning the shake. The timer went off a few moments later and the remaining duelists were going to check the bracket again. I picked up my deck and walked out of the shop.
