Sexual Orientation is almost non-existent, and fairly irrelevant. It's like how people say Spobebob is gay. That parameter of his character was never set by the creators. Of course Spongebob is actually asexual, but I digress. I do agree with you that RD is basically just a tomboy. She kind of gives me the impression of a skater chick.
