As for the wipes, I think we would never know what true purpose it serves. I can see the eerie connection, but I'm just thinking it's just a way for Hasbro to get off more money. During Luna Eclipsed, lightning and thunder happened during Luna's most dramatic scenes. There's also a lightning in the (clear) sky during Fluttershy's breakdown in The Best Night Ever.
