Episode One: Darkest Before The Dawn

 

Part 1

 

 

Another flash of lightening crashes across the sky. Rain falls heavily over the hole island. The storm has been going on for a few days now and is now at its worst part. They should be coming soon The Headmaster of Duel Academy says to himself as he sits in his office waiting in anticipation for the meeting he knows is only to close. Then, with a bang of thunder and a burst of wind, the two large windows behind the desk flew open letting the howling wind and puring rain crash into his office. The wind starts blowing papers all around and as the headmaster struggles to push the windows shut and re-secures them.

 

“At least thats dune with”, he says after getting his room back together then extra locking the windows and wiping the bead of sweat from his forehead.

“Oh is it”.

The Headmaster froze. His blood almost ice, there here. Slowly he turns around. Standing in the entrance to his office are two people, wrapped in black cloaks with there hoods concealing there faces. “So there are two of you then” the Headmaster said, trying to hide his dread and fear. “Indeed there are. Then you know why we are where” “The time has come for the grate battle, and for us to clime the prize. You know what you must do”

The two of them spoke in sequence, one after the other, each carrying on the same conversation

“Honor the pact, and send us your best warriors” “So that we defeat them and obtain The Prizes we where promised”

“But there just kids, there not ready for this”

“Destiny has chosen them, as your champions, they are the only hope you have. “You must send them to The Mountain for our fight, And the divine ones will decide who they wish the most to control there powers”

there final sentence is uttered in unison

"The Sun and moon shall choose there wielders, let fate be the guide of the chosen" and with that, the windows busted open again, showering the room in rain and icy wind once again, and when the wind died down, the two where gone. The headmaster takes a look around his room, a mess with papers and very wet. “This is bad... I'm afraid, I really have no choice, the gears of fate are turning”

 

 

 

Then next morning after breakfast, an announcement sounds over the Duel Academy PA system. “This is your Headmaster speaking, Could Yuzen Kyo and Shiina Okoni please come to my office” As soon as the speakers cut the hole school started in a roar of rumors, Why was the legendary underdog and his sidekick being called to the Headmasters office, aside from curfew the two where pretty well behaved and neither was failing any classes, so why where they being called to his office.

 

“You know we where just called to the Headmasters office right, shouldn't we get going” Shiina said to her best friend, looking out the window of his dorm towards the main building. “In a sec Shiina, I want to finish my page” Yuzen replied to her, without looking up from his book. “You've had your nose buried in that biography for months now, is it really that interesting”

“Yeah it is. Can you believe all the crazy things the King went threw, on these grounds no less. Its pretty amazing”

“Don't tell me you actually believe all of that Shadow Games and Shadow Riders stuff, do you”

“Hey, why would the King need to lie, its not like he is trying to get more attention he doesn't need that”

“Whatever, but we need to get going, we'll be in trouble if we don't go soon”

“Man, why are girls so impatient. There, I'm dune you happy” he says, getting up off his bed.

“Finally, lets go. And, ill pretend I didn't hear that first part” she says, heading out the dorm room towards the main building “all right”, he calls after her, placing his copy of “Duel Academy Adventures, the Early Biography of Jaden Yuki, the King of Games” and runs out after her.

 

 

 

The two of them arrive at the Headmasters office and knock at the door “Headmaster Herlend its Yuzen and Shiina. You called for us?”

”Yes, please take a seat, I have something important to talk to you about”. The two of them slowly walked into the room, it was messier then normal, and there was some water stains around the windows, but the thing they where both fixated on was there headmaster. He was a mess. He looked like he had not slept all night or been out of his office for a few days. Silently they both took a seat, Then, there Headmaster began. “Your probably wondering why I called you both here” he paused for a moment, as if trying to decide whether what he was about to say should be said at all, then hesitantly continued “The two of you have proven to be the best team in the academy, you have even beaten Momo and Heragi the tag team twins. I need you two to duel against two very powerful duelists. The stakes are much higher then a grade, or your rarest card. The stakes of this game will be the fate of the academy, and maybe even the world”. The two kids looked dumbstruck, they heard about the King of Games doing duels this important, but they weren't magic, they didn't have cards that spoke to them or millennium items, they where just two kids, granted, Yuzen had earned the name of 'The Legendary Underdog' from his low rank but grate dueling abilities. He was one of the best duelists in the school, and even better when on a team with is beast friend Shiina, but was he good enough to do as the Kings of the past and duel with stakes like these. And Shiina herself was a good duelist, but she never stood out in duels, never did anything big, like enter school tournaments or challenge matches other then the team duels she did with Yuzen, and even there, she let Yuzen do most of the work. She loved dueling, but didn't really think she was that grate at it.

Shiina was about to speak up an object, but Headmaster Herlend interrupted her before she could start.

“You may not think your that good, but the truth is, you where chosen by destiny to be the ones to save us all from this travesty. And as such, I will present you with these.” saying this, the Headmaster opens his desk drawer and pulls out two pendents, one red and one blue “These are for the two of you.” he says putting them down on the desk in front of them. Without saying a word Yuzen takes the red one and Shiina takes the blue one and they put them on. “I see, so you are already ready to accept your destiny”

“Well, maybe” Yuzen said hesitantly “But when I saw the pendent, I just knew I was supposed to wear it”

”Yeah, me to”

“That is your destiny calling you. The Headmaster replied, a slight smile on his face. “Well. I wish I could give you more time, but I'm afraid its quite urgent. You must be ready to go by lunch time. You have until then to get ready. I have already sent a note to all your teachers excusing you from classes today”

“Wow, we get to skip class. This is getting good already” Yuzen said, the air of joking in his tone.

“Yeah. We should save the world more often, hehe” Shiina said, trying to carry on her friends joke, but sounding more worried then she wanted to.

“All right, you kids better get going. Get your decks ready, This will be unlike any duel you have played before”. The two of them node in unison and then stand, bow, and leave for there rooms. The headmaster remains sitting in his seat, now facing the window, looking very solemn “I am sorry children, but its truly unavoidable. Hopefully.. this will not be our last goodbye”

 

 

 

Yuzen spent the rest of the day till lunch in his room, getting his deck ready, more excited then scared. He was going to be a hero and save the world by dueling just like the Kings. Well Arcturus He thought to himself with a smile, holding his favorite card Its time for the duel of our life. I hope your up to it, because I'm stoked He laughs, wishing his card could talk back to him, to give him some sage like wisdom before his ordeal. And for a moment, he thought he heard Arcturus laugh back.

 

 

Shiina was a bit more nostalgic then Yuzen about it. She spent only a little time on her deck, trusting the cards that her friends and family gave her to guide her as best she could, and she spent the rest of her time reminiscing about the days she spent at The Academy with her friends. Visiting places filled with memories. The last place she went to, as lunch came near, was the south beach, the place where she first met Yuzen, back when there older siblings where going to the Academy. The shadows of her memories played across the beach like she was reliving it

 

“You here because your parents are visiting your older sister too?”

“Older brother, but yeah”

“You duel too?”

”yeah, who doesn't” ...

 

 

...“huh, are you crying”

“Its just that, *sob * I don't really *sob * have any friends, your the first person to come up and talk to me”

“Silly girl. Why, don't you have any friends at school or something? You seem really nice”

“its cues I'm really shy *sob * nun of the other kids would talk to me because I haven't spoken to them yet”

“Well your talking to me aren't ya?”

“Y-yeah *sniffle * I guess I am”

“Well then, how about we be friends.”

“I would like that * sniffle*.. but, we don't go the the same school”

“Well we both live near each other, we can hang out outside of school. And where both going here when we get old enough right? We can be best friends then”

“Yeah, Best friends *giggle *

 

”He was so simple, even then, everything was as easy as saying it for him. And its because of him that I was able to come out of my shell and make lots of friends. But he will still always be my best”

 

Smiling, she turns, and starts walking towards the lunch hall. ”Its almost time, I need to back up my friend. We have a date with destiny”, She thought, with determination in her eyes

 

 

The two of them meet up at the lunch hall after the 3 hours spent alone, they decided they would at least eat there last lunch together. Neither of them spoke much, but neither minded. They where just happy to be able to share there last moments of peace with there best friend.

After lunch, the two of them made there way to the Headmasters office again, but all they found was a not on the door it read,

To the two of you.

You have my best wishes, I have done all I can to prepare you the best I could. The two of you show much promise, and I believe in you. However, you must make this journey alone. Your destiny awaits you on the top of the mountain. Find it, and make it your own. Good luck you two, and remember, trust in the heart of your deck, and of your cards.

“The Mountain? Do you think he means the Volcano?” “Yeah.. probably.. Well, we better get going.”

 

and so, the two of them, side by side, packs on there back and decks in there pockets, began the long walk to there destiny

 

 

 

 

It was a long walk, but uneventful. Kind of peaceful actually. The two of them had plenty of time to talk, and in the end, had decided that they would stick it together no matter what and win this for everyone. As they neared the top of the mountain. The two finished up there conversation

 

“So, thats it then, the two of us, best friends to the end, just like we promised when we where kids”

“Yeah, so lets keep that many years, go it”

“Touching, but I'm afraid not. The two of you will be departing this world soon”

the voice was sharp. It came from the center of the smoking hole of the Volcano. Then a second voice from the smoke. “You two are our opponents, very well. Enter the arena so that we may begin”

“Enter the arena! You mean jump into the volcano's mouth!?”

“Yes. Take the plunge, you'll be OK. If your not to chicken to do so ” the first voiced echoed again, then brakes out in mocking laughter. The sun was beginning to set, twilight was approaching. Gulping in unison, the two friends took hold of each others hands and jumped into the smoke of the volcano. As they entered the smoke there pendents glowed softly and when the two opened there eyes they found themselves standing on a golden stage. To one side, was a large gate. The way out. But the door was sealed. To the other side, 3 large podiums surrounded with grate fire and darkness. And standing across from them. The opponents, who they will be fighting for the fate of the world. Two people, cloaked in black. Each had a duel disk on, and was ready to duel. The one on the left spoke first. “You two.. Children” he seemed to spit the word out with disdain. But judging from his voice he was not much older then they where. Then the other spoke “You know what is on the line. If you loose this duel, you will be killed. If you run now, your lives will be spared

“We may be spared..” Yuzen started. ”..But others will suffer” Shiina finished.

“So, we can not dissuade you?”.

“No, we will fight..

“Very well, So be it. We will now explain to you the rules for this duel” “This will be a Team Duel.”“WE on one team, and you on the other” “However. In this team duel. The life count is separate between partners. And if one partners life count drops to zero, the other keeps on dueling, until one team is remaining”“You may have your monsters shield your partner from direct attacks”“But you may not use your partner's monsters for tributes or sacrifices.” “The winner of this contest will be reworded the power of the Divine.”. Yuzen interrupts ”Divine! You mean like the god monsters?” The one on the left chuckles deeply “Yes. Like the god monsters. However. These cards are a bit more picky, and there domain stretches well out of Egypt” “The winner will gain power over the Divine Heavenly Forms. “Of Light and Darkness”

 

So this is what they where fighting for. To keep these powers contained. If the winner of this game really did get so much power, then only someone really good and pure should have access to it at all. Whatever these people where planing to do with this power, Yuzen and Shiina would need to stop them.

 

“Lets get this duel started then. Let the Shadow Game begin”

“Wait did you say shadow game?” Shiina interjected.

“Yes, a shadow game” the one on the right replied, enjoying the panic in her voice

"Hizaki, you are getting ahead of yourself. We still need to finish explaining the rules to them”

“Right, sorry Koji. I just got a little excited”

Koji... I head that name before... Yuzen thought as he listened to the explanation of the new rules, trying to remember from where.

 

“This will be like no other duel you have had before” “Every life point lost will cause excruciating pain. “And when your life points run out” “So dose your life” “Of course, there are ways to come back from the shadow realm, but weaklings like you will never be able to do it”

“And one more little tidbit.” “As the cards in our decks run low” “this platform will get smaller” “random pieces will fall off into the magma” “So don't let it get to small, or they'll be no place to stand,” “If you fall in, its game over for you,” “So watch your step” “Now that you know the rules” “We are ready to start”

 

“You guys are serious about this? We could all be killed”

“The risks of a Shadow Game kid, The game kings dealt with it all the time.”

“Whats the matter Kid. Cant handle the pressure”

“Sure we can. Were game, right Yuzen”

“Yeah, I guess we don't really have a choice”

“Good. Now then”

“Yuzen will take the first turn, fallowed by Koji”

“Then Shiina, finally Hizaki”

“then the cycle starts over. Got that”

“Oh, and no one can make an attack till the end of the first round, so Hizaki is the first who can attack”

“Just an extension of the normal rule. And other then that, all the rules are like normal duel Academy regulations. So, you got all that”

“yeah, we can take you. Right Shiina”

“Yeah, well wipe the floor with you.”

 

The 4 of them get into dueling positions, each one standing on a different corner of the square platform, but leaving plenty of room between themselves and the edge.

 

“Game ON, My turn first. So I Draw”. Yuzen starts his turn, and as he draws his first card, a panel of the fool drops of into the darkness below. They weren't kidding, this game is dangerous. We need to be ready for anything

“I play one card face down, and a monster in defense mode. Then I'll end”.

 

“I'm up. Draw”

“I will also set one monster, and place a face down card. End”

 

“So its my turn. I draw” Shiina said, examining her first move. Nothing showing at the third turn.. but I cant make an offensive move, so I will just have to do this...

“I just place 1 monster in defense mode and end”

 

“Your all so boring, fine, Ill take the first strike. Draw”

“Now I summon Death’s list reaper In attack mode.”

 

“And this little sucker comes with one nasty trick. He can attack twice. So I'll attack both your monsters”

Deaths List Reaper raises its scythe and swings it once, sending a shockwave at Yuzens face down monster, then the tether at the end of its scythe strikes at Shiinas face down monster.

 

“My monster is Traveler's Guide.” Yuzen said, flipping up his monster from the attack with a grin on his face.

 

“She has 1800 defense points, so you take 100 points of damage and shes not destroyed.”

 

At least we will still have one monster, Yuzen will be going strong next turn Shiina though, giving a short sigh, then moving to her card.

“My monster is The Fifth Code,”

 

“She goes down. But I'm not out” She said, determined to make a come back.

 

 

“Finally, I place one card face down and end.” Hizaki said, concluding his turn.

Now the games getting started

 

Now we have a small advantage, its only 100 points, but its the start

“My move again,” Yuzen said, drawing his card, then looking at it and smiling.

“I summon Arcturus-The Traveler.”

 

My favorite card always comes threw for me. Drawing him this soon in the game is a good sign

“His effect removes him from the game, but, by paying 500 life points, I get to Special Summon Arcturus back to the field.” As Yuzen's monster returns to the field, the the virtual system counts out 500 of his life points, he drops to the floor, clutching his chest in agony. So this is what the pain of a shadow game was, it was stifling, like the air was being squeezed from his lungs by some kind of cold hand. And for the first time, Yuzen regretted playing his favorite card.

 

“Whats the matter boy, more pain then you expected? The more life points you loose at once, the more painful it is. You can still drop out if you cant handle it” Hizaki laughed, mocking Yuzen in his time of pain.

 

“N-no way” Yuzen said threw gridded teeth, struggling to get to his feet. “I-its not even that bad. I just need to get used to it.”

Finally back on his feet, Yuzen was ready to cause some pain back.

 

“Arcturus-The Traveler attack Death’s List Reaper.

Arcturus's arm glows, as he raises it into the air, and a bolt of white energy fires from it into the sky, then comes back down, incinerating Death's List Reaper.

 

“Thats good enough for now, I end”

 

 

“Your about to see some real cards, I'll start by flipping up my monster,

Arcus – Defender of the 7th Gate.”

 

“But this is only the beginning, now, I'll activate Pathway to the Grate Gates”

 

“With this card, I tribute Arcus, in order to call forth one of the most powerful cards in my deck, The 7th Gate – The Gate of Light”

 

“And now, I summon Donon – Warrior of the 7th Gate”

 

“And the last part of my combo. Sword of Light”

 

“This move will leave you both in the dust, Donon has 2500 attack points and my Gate of Light stops your Spell or Trap cards from effecting him.”

 

“Its time to take down your Arcturus. Donon, Attack”

 

“Not so fast, reveal Face down, Blowing in the Wind”

 

“I already told you, My Gate protects Donon from your trap cards”

 

“Yeah. And that might make a difference, if I was targeting your monster, but I'm targeting Arcturus, removing him from the game and ending your attack short and all I need to do is toss a card . Smooth move huh”

 

“Yeah, way to play Yuzen”

 

“You saved yourself with that move, but you only delayed the inevitable, I'll end, so now its your worthless friends turn”

 

“I'm not worthless, I'll show you, Draw”

“I cant screw with up, lets see now, wait, thats it”

“I activate Arcane Rejuvenation”

 

“Remember my Fifth Code, well I'm bringing her back.”

 

“But the fun doesn't stop there, now I activate Arcane Tome”

 

“This little beauty has a wonderful effect, it lets me change my Fifth Code into its spell form, which reduces the level stars of the monsters in my hand by 2 if there Arcane monsters. So now I can summon The Seventh Code”

 

“You really are as useless as you look, is that all you got”

 

“Actually, it is for this turn, I place one card face down and end”

 

“Its my turn again.”

 

“Crud, unfortunately, I am only going to place a monster in defense mode, and end”

 

“Heh, the only time your quiet is when its actually your turn, Yuzen mocked, just wanting to get back at Hizaki for all the things hes said so far.

Well then, I'll start...

He froze. Would this have been a normal duel, Yuzen would have payed another 500 life points to bring back his Arcturus, But this was a shadow game and if he did, it would be another unbearable 500 points of damage.. no, its better to try and play things a different way

 

“Um.. I'll also play 1 card in face down defense position, and another card face down”

 

“What happened to your cocky talk kid, the shadow game starting to get to you”

 

“Enough, its my turn now, so I draw”

 

“Now I summon, the Alchemist Brothers – Gemini of the 8th Gate”

 

“Next I attack with Donon – Warrior of the 7th Gate to your Seventh Code, wiping it out”

 

“I don't think so, reveal face down card, Arcane Bubble Magic.”

 

“So my monster isn't destroyed”

 

“But you still take the 300 points of damage.”

 

“Then, I end”

 

The stinging of 300 points of damage wasn't as bad as 500 points, so Shiina only cringed a bit with the pain, and it left her a little winded. Regaining her breath, Shiina started her turn.

 

“All right, my move again.” lets make this count

“OK, ill start with this card, Leak arcane secrets”

 

”So now, I reveal the two cards in my hand”

 

“And then I draw a card, and reveal that too because its an Arcane monster, and its The Fourth Code”

 

“And so I get to draw one more time”

 

“And this card, is exactly what I need to take this duel to our side. Now I use the other effect of my Arcane Tome, to change my Fifth Code into a monster again, summoning her to the field in face up defense possession

 

“And now, I summon Brianna the Purple Moon”

 

“This monster gets 200 more attack points for each Arcanist monster on my field, and counting her, thanks to her other effect, I have 3, giving her, including your spell, 2800 attack points”

 

“So now, being the strongest monster on the field, shes going to attack your

Donon – Warrior of the 7th Gate”

Brianna holds out her hand, and a purple blitz of energy flies from it, colliding with Donon and exploding.

 

“That destroys him, and deals you 300 points of damage. But thats not all, Now,

Seventh Code, Attack his Alchemist Brothers”

 

“,Your not the only one with face down cards, I reveal my face down card Wings of Protection”

 

“And so my Alchemist brothers are not destroyed. Although I still take another 300 points of damage”

 

“Hows that for worthless. Well, my turns up. I end”

 

“Finally. My turn again, Draw”

 

“All right, its time to be proactive, I summon Overseer of the Three Tomes”

 

“I can summon him without a tribute if I sacrifice him at the end of turn, but I'll only need him around for this turn. When he is normal summoned I get to search my deck for one of my tomes of darkness, and I pick this one, The Necronomicon”

 

“But I'll save it for later. For now, I'll take my opening and cut the strength of your monster down by attacking your Fifth Code with my Overseer of the Three Tomes”

The Overseer points a long bonny finger at The Fifth Code and a black bolt fires from it, wipping out the small spellcaster.

 

“Then I end, and my Overseer goes to the graveyard by its effect.”

 

“All right then, back to me”

 

“I summon Ijanmi-The Traveler”

 

“But, like my Arcturus he doesn't stay long, but you'll see him again next turn. So thats it, I end"

Ijanmi will come back on his own, so I can still use him in this duel

 

“My turn, I draw, then I summon another Arcus – Guardian of the 7th Gate"

 

“But this one wont stay long either, like the first one, I tribute it to activate this card, Tribute to the Grate Gates”

 

“And so, I draw 3 cards. Next I'll place 1 card face down and change my Alchemist Brothers into Defensive mode and end”

 

“OK, its my turn then, so I draw. Then I'll Summon The Fourth Code in attack mode”

 

“Then I will activate Sword of the Arcane”

 

“I have 3 Arcane monsters on my field, so it deals 600 points of damage to one of you. And I pick Koji”

As Shiina declares the target, a large blue sword appears. Strands of energy fire from her Arcane monsters into the sword, then the sword pierces Koji, passing threw his body, but dropping him to one knee for a moment.

 

“Next, I'll use the effect of my Arcane Tome to change my Fourth Code into its spell form, increasing the ATK of all my Arcane monsters by 300 points.

 

“Now, its time to attack. Brianna, attack his Alchemist Brothers”

Brianna holds out her hand again and another purple bolt fires from it, this time at the Alchemists Brothers.

 

“I was waiting for that, so I can activate this, Mystic Backlash”

 

“So say goodbye to Brianna”

A shield of distortion forms in front of the Alchemists Brothers blocking the attack and bouncing it back at Brianna, destroying her with burst of light.

 

“I still have my Seventh Code, and even if its ATK points are equal with your Alchemist Brothers DEF points, I can still attack Hizaki's face down monster.”

 

“Finally. I thought I wasn't in this duel for a moment. My face down monster is Wandering Soul”

 

“She may be small, but trust me, shes as annoying as heck”

 

“Well, I'll give you a chance to show it. I end, making it your turn”

 

“All right then, Draw. Then I will go to my Standby Phase, and so my Wandering Soul comes back to the field in face up defense position”

 

“Then I'll Set one card face down and end my turn”

 

hes staying relatively quiet, I wonder what hes up to

 

“Its my move. I draw, and then Ijanmi – The Traveler comes back to the field”

 

“And when he comes back out, I can draw 2 cards. Then I will tribute my face down monster, in order to set another card from my hand. And next Ijanmi will attack Hizaki's face down monster”

 

“My monster is Skeleton guard #2.

 

“And he is destroyed by your attack”

 

“All right then, I end”

 

“And I begin. I draw, and then I use the Alchemist Brothers effect. So instead of normal summoning this turn I change Alchemist Brothers into an effect monster. Next I will activate Tribute to the Shadows”

 

“So I send to the graveyard from my deck, Higshiji - Kitsun Manden of the 7th Gate, and then remove one of my Arcus – Defender of the 7th Gate from play. Next, I discard Petit – Small light of the 7th Gate. To use my Alchemists Brothers effect and bring to my hand Higshiji - Kitsun Manden of the 7th Gate”

 

“Then 1 card face down and I end”

 

“My move, draw. I play The Third Code as a spell card.”

 

“That should spice things up a bit, I end”

 

 

“So its my move now, and I draw”

 

“And then you take 700 points of damage from my Third Codes effect, bringing you down to 3200”

The Third Code glows with a dim red light, and a similar glow appears around Hizaki coupled with a fiery sting. After the damage is done, the glow fades and Hizaki gets back to his feet.

 

“Yes, but thats only a small detail compared to my next move. I activate the Loqour Excessum

 

“And, because one good book deserves another, I activate the Necronomicon”

 

“And now, using my Necronomicon, I will send from my deck to the Graveyard, 3 Graveyard Wanderers, 2 Skeleton Guard #2, 2 Death’s list reapers, and 2 Wondering Souls, and because of my Loqour Excessum, for each one I gain 300 life points, bringing me up to 5900 life points. But if you think thats where I'm stopping your wrong. Now I summon Cursed Reaper Xilroth

 

“Normally he takes 3 sacrifices, but he looses 1 star for every monster in my Graveyard, and I have more then 9 monsters in my Graveyard so he has enough stars for me to normal summon him. Now, Xilroth, attack her Seventh Code”

Xilroth put his hands together and then parted them slightly. A small black orb appeared in the space between his hands and then he fires it at the Seventh Code. The orb grows to a massive size and consumes The Seventh Code, then shrinks out of existence along with the Seventh Code.
