[spoiler=My thoughts on the episode]

 

I think it was too much of a quick full 180 for Diamond Tiara, and that Silver Spoon has tolerated more than this in the past so I expected her to either know and understand of Tiara's family situation better than anyone or get a little more of a focus here. Neither were the case, but other than those things, I'm pretty happy with the episode. The feels were worth it.

 

There's a lot of cute stuff here. The symbols are alright since they represent both how they have their special talents on the center, and how they are still connected to each other after all they've gone through.

 

Where they'll go from here? Well, there's a few characters in class with no cutie marks, and many more out there in the world.

I can see where they'll go from here, and in a way, they are gonna be as important as a princess but in a more impressive way: They'll go out to help others just like they said in the episode before getting their cutie marks, but they will do so from their own merit entirely.

To be honest, even if Silver Spoon knew Diamond's living conditions, she would only have a certain amount of tolerance. A filly can only take so much before the damn bursts, and this was probably the last straw for her. The fact that she was told to STFU by Diamond also didn't really help her case. It's no surprise that their friendship would break after this, considering Spoon was very certain her advice would have helped Diamond, and, if she was suggesting Diamond show that she is capable of caring about others, Diamond's actions probably told her flat-out that she doesn't care about anyone but herself.

 

However, yeah, Diamond's 180 was far too fast really. If we knew more about her getting Pacifica'd by her mother in previous episodes, it would explain some of her near sociopathic tendencies better, and wouldn't make it look like it came out of left field. And yes I say sociopathic, considering she's blackmailed the CMC in the newspaper episode, and ridiculed Scootaloo for a disability (her tiny wings). It's clear that she's been raised to hit down whenever possible, but if we saw more of Spoiled Rich beforehand, it would at least justify her eventual 180 if she at least had some kinds of doubts. Also, it seems ponies do take last names in marriage, considering Mr. and Mrs. Cake. So, would Spoiled Rich's maiden name have been Rotten possibly? And if that's the case, does that mean Cadance's name is Princess Cadance Armour?

 

I'm starting to think that maybe Cutie Marks might have a 'screw destiny' quality to them, considering Sweetie Belle never gained a singing Cutie Mark, despite her talent for it, in ANY of the musical numbers. So, given the fact that the CMC gained matching Cutie Marks, I'm beginning to suspect that ponies might have some control over what they get, considering that their Cutie Marks actually note their talent of being an Apple, singing, and agility respectively.

I find it rather interesting that all three CMC gained a shield, due to being Crusaders. And yet, each shield bears a symbol related to their talent. Apple Bloom has an apple, due to her family roots. Sweetie Belle has a music note, due to her singing ability and song writing skills. And Skootaloo has a lightning bolt, relating to her agility, and of course relating to Rainbow Dash. Naturally they could have just gotten Cutie Marks with those symbols, and yet, they all gained likewise shields. This makes me wonder if Cutie Marks do indeed have a screw destiny quality to them, as the CMC more or less chose their path in life.

 

Of course, this brings a theory to mind: Princess Twilight has no guards, unlike Celestia, Luna, and Cadance. She's a pretty easy target whilst sitting pretty in her castle, with her only defence being her magic and her friends. So, it just makes me wonder if maybe now the CMC have their fates tied with the Mane 6. While they have their map to help them spread the magic of friendship, who will be there to defend it? Perhaps the three little fillies who just gained their fancy new Cutie Marks. In a ways it makes a lot of sense that they could be the assigned guards of friendship, considering they also all have ties to the Bearers of Harmony. That being Applejack, Rarity, and Rainbow Dash. It's quite possible that their fates were changed due to Twilight ascending. Friendship needs protecting, and now she had a trio of crusaders in training who could do just that.

While I agree in some sense, we've never seen two things between Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon's relationship:

1.) Them arguing.

2.) Silver Spoon EVER speaking up against Diamond Tiara's plans.

 

In fact if anyone remembers, it was SILVER SPOON'S idea to make fun of Scootaloo's wings- Diamond Tiara merely rolled with it. If anything this proves that Silver Spoon is just as bad as Diamond Tiara or at the very least works off of Diamond Tiara's bad attitude.

 

So when Silver Spoon comes out and gives the best line in the entire episode I'll admit, I enjoyed it and was glad because that was what everyone wanted to say to her, but it kind of felt out of character for her a bit. As I said we've never see her get upset, even in the episode, over Diamond Tiara's attitude towards her; she only shies away.

 

If after she was told not to talk she snapped back at her, saying she was "only trying to help" and have Diamond Tiara respond with, "I don't need your help!" then the burn Silver Spoon gave her wouldn't have been so out of character to me.

 

I think it was too much of a quick full 180 for Diamond Tiara, and that Silver Spoon has tolerated more than this in the past so I expected her to either know and understand of Tiara's family situation better than anyone or get a little more of a focus here. Neither were the case, but other than those things, I'm pretty happy with the episode. The feels were worth it.

 

To be honest after watching this three times, plan on watching it a fourth time and maybe even more afterwards, I have to agree. Diamond Tiara's change was too rapid and, let's face it, so ham fisted with the speech at the end I rolled my eyes listening to her.

 

This is the same filly who, as Broken said:

I agree. We've never heard of her home life before and, even with that in mind, it was so 180 that I got whiplash the first time I saw it. I actually expected her to NOT be redeemed or at the very least have this be a beginning to her redemption.

 

After thinking about it I came up with what I think could've made this episode a complete 100% for me.

 

First off, Spoiled Rich.

 

I'm sorry, but I can't help but roll my eyes and shale my head whenever this character is on screen. She is a stereotype and I HATE that with a passion!

Hearing Diamond Tiara calling the CMC "blank flanks" is alright because we're used to it; we've come to understand it's a term used by a bully. Yet when Spoiled Rich uses the same phrase, one we've been associating with a schoolyard bully, I can't help but raise my eyebrow and think, "Really? Really? You don't have anything better to do than to insult a couple of fillies?"

 

To me it's pathetic . . . and badly written.

Worse than Principle Cinch, who is so cliche her only goal is "I want to keep looking good for the public."

 

Yet, if Spoiled Rich had instead told her daughter not to associate with "low class ponies" because it would ruin her reputation, then I think Diamond Tiara's reversal would be more believable; given that they were the only ones who came to cheer her up after everything that happened, loosing her only friend and loosing the election because of said friend loss.

 

Give Spoiled Rich the "mother knows best" kind of personality, one where everything she does she believes is to aid in her daughter's bright future- even if it means stomping over other cowering ponies.

 

As for Diamond Tiara's redemption when it comes to herself, I wouldn't have had her be so confident. How am I supposed to get behind someone who's trying to make a change if they're so confident in said change? I can't worry if they're making the right choice because they don't seem to worry about it.

 

If after Diamond Tiara had told her mother to stop insulting her friends, she had turned and asked, nervously, "right?" as if she herself didn't even know if the CMC and her really were friends then I'd have my biggest problem out of the way. Show her being more vulnerable, scared that she might not be making the right choice or about standing up to her overbearing mother in the first place.

 

Also, as I said, her speech is really hammy. Repeating Twilight's words about the Crusaders from Season One isn't a call back if you REPEAT IT WORD FOR WORD! Instead have her saying what's good about the Crusaders and slowly begin to recall Twilight's words, mumble them at first and slowly have her confidence return in a triumphant, "Now, mother, would you kindly give this letter to daddy?"

 

For fun change every "please" Diamond Tiara says to "would you kindly" (internet cookie if you know the reference.)

 

It seems ponies do take last names in marriage, considering Mr. and Mrs. Cake. So, would Spoiled Rich's maiden name have been Rotten possibly?

Just because you're good at something doesn't mean you're going to explicitly have your cutie mark be associated with it. For instance take Rarity, her Cutie Mark is three diamonds and is meant to represent her ability to not only find hidden gems but to make things beautiful/fancy. Yet she specifically makes clothing. So why isn't her Cutie Mark, if her talent is sewing, a needle and thread or something else obviously denoting making cloths?

 

Again, another example is the Bad Luck Pony. Instead of bad luck, which he thought his Cutie Mark meant, instead it could be seen as being clumsy for the sake of entertainment.

 

Or What about Pinkie Pie? She has shown a talent for baking things. Why didn't she get her Cutie Mark in baking?

 

The point is, Cutie Marks have always been ambiguous on what they represent and what it means for the pony once they get them.

 

"A picture is worth a thousand words" can very well apply to Cutie Marks as well- one Cutie Mark can mean many different things.

Basically, the Crusaders have become "Life Management Coaches".

Well, considering the fact that Alicorns have been proven to be incredibly powerful magic users, with Twilight being the most raw talent out of all of them, I would think no one would attempt to go after her.

 

In fact out of all four Princesses I can safely say if there was one I expected to get kidnapped and/or attacked, it'd be Cadence.

 

Of course we've seen all of them be trapped before, but more or less when the plot demands it.
