Not-so-Radiant Arin
It is officially Wednesday everybody, so here comes another installment of my beloved fanfic. I'm still trying to decide between moving all of my chapter posts to the OP or keep it as is, or even provide links to the posts like Roxas suggested. Except, I don't know how to do that. Anyways, here is another Chapter, and a Turbo Dueling Chapter at that!
Chapter 13 – Spirits of Fire, Water, and Wind, Part 2 She had awoken from a deep sleep. She struggled to lift her eyes to the sight of all the light in the room. How long had she had been out? She didn’t remember being in any place like this. She brushed her light blue hair back behind her ears and looked out the window, reveling in the sites of the magnificent city. However, it still didn’t answer her question as to why she was here. She tried to venture a guess as to where she was. The first thing that came to her mind was a hospital or clinic, because of the wallpapers with the blue cross that were dotting her “room”. She heard some indistinct noises coming from the room. The blue-haired girl looked up and saw a television in the corner, tuned to the station broadcasting the Future Worlds Championship Preliminary Matchups. “…from an explosive first-round duel today. There’s definitely going to be more action throughout the day. We still have Phoenix going against Team Black Rain’s Asuka Yoshida, which promises to be an exciting match. Then, its leader versus leader, as Ressen Ikeda takes on Yuma Ishiko in a high-speed, high-velocity Turbo Duel…” The girl’s face was stunned with shock. “Impossible. He’s here…how could it be?” She then took out a card from her back pocket. It was labeled “Daedalus Hero Ninetails”. “I have to get this card to him as soon as possible,” the girl said to herself. She stood up, but the pain was too much for her to bear. There was a stabbing sensation in her stomach. Guess that idea would have to wait. The girl looked up at the ceiling, contemplating why Ressen had come here to Japan. /-/ Phoenix circled around the track a few more times, waving to the crowd as he did so. He was still waiting for his opponent to come out on the track so that he would duel. Phoenix was firing on all cylinders right now and couldn’t wait to demolish his opponent. This is what he lived for, and he couldn’t wait to see what kind of Deck that Asuka had. Finally, a thick white mist covered the blue garage. Phoenix knew it would be her. This was the perfect time to strategize, and think about what kind of card combos he could implement. The MC spoke for the first time in what seemed like a while. “Duelists, are you ready? This match will be Team Future World’s Phoenix against Team Black Rain’s Asuka Yoshida, also known as the Spirit of Water. This Turbo Duel is about to start, so take your seats and let ‘er rip, duelists.” From out of the mist-covered garage came Asuka, sporting a light blue suit and a light blue Duel Runner. She raced to the starting line, where Phoenix was already waiting. “Why don’t we spare the pleasantries and formalities and get straight down to business, shall we,” Phoenix said. “Well, no need to be so rude,” Asuka scoffed. “Where I come from in the Satellite, you learn not to trust anyone, duelist or not. It’s no different today, or yesterday for that matter. I activate the “Speed World 2” Field Spell.” “Fine,” spat Asuka. Both of the Duelists activated their Field Spell, and the Dueling arena became encased in a purple atmospheric glow. “Duel Mode engaged. Countdown initiated, auto-pilot disengaged,” said the electronic computer on the screen. Then, blips tolled the countdown for the race to start. Phoenix looked over at his opponent. Her eyes met with his. They seemed to be sad, but then again, it was all just a ploy. She was just trying to shake off his concentration. Phoenix needed to focus on the race. The final blip tolled green, and both duelists wheeled into action. “I hope you know what you’re getting yourself into. I’ll show you why I’m not just a pretty face,” Asuka said, taking pole position. “I’ve seen prettier from a woman twenty years older,” Phoenix said, with a hint of malice. Asuka growled, and sped up her Duel Runner, rocketing past the first corner. She drew her five-card hand, and Phoenix followed in suit. Asuka grabbed an additional card. Asuka LP: 4000 Phoenix LP: 4000 “I’ll teach you a thing or two about manners, little boy. My team is in this to win. We have never given up, and we’re always looking out for each other. And what about you; what qualities does your team possess,” Asuka asked philosophically. “We’re always looking out for each other as well. It’ll be no different today once you’re kissing concrete,” Phoenix retaliated with flare. Asuka affixed her gaze in front of her. “You really are a handful. The first move is mine.” Asuka Card Count: 6 “I Summon “Cloudian – Cirrostratus” in Defense Position. But by its effect, when “Cloudian – Cirrostratus” is ever in Defense Position, it is destroyed automatically and sent to the Graveyard. Then, two facedown cards to end my turn.” Phoenix struggled to contemplate the intent of Asuka’s move. What benefit does sending your own monster to the graveyard accomplish? Phoenix put it beside him. He needed to focus. “Very well, then. My draw.” Phoenix Card Count: 6, SPC: 1 Asuka SPC: 1 “First, I’m activating the Speed Spell “Overboost”. This lets me temporarily increase my Speed Counters by 4,” Phoenix said to his opponent. Phoenix SPC: 5 “Now, since I have more than 4 Speed Counters, I can activate the Speed Spell “Speed Fusion”. This allows me to take monsters from my hand and Fusion Summon them, so I send “Elemental Hero Lady Heat” and “Laval Lady of the Burning Lake” to the Graveyard in order to Fusion Summon “Elemental Hero Nova Master”. Consider this the heat and rage within my soul, beyond the point of flame! Now, “Elemental Hero Nova Master”, attack her directly.” “Not so fast. I activate a Trap, “Card Defense”. By discarding my “Cloudian – Poison Cloud” from my hand, I’m allowed to stop your attack, and then, after the Battle Phase, I draw one card.” Asuka Card Count: 3 “Fine, so I didn’t get the chance to attack you this turn. But there is nothing stopping me next turn.” “I’m afraid you won’t ever get the chance to do so. Now since it is the End Phase, your Speed Counters go back down to 1, am I right,” Asuka declared. She snickered, like she already knew the answer. Phoenix SPC: 1 “Well, then allow me,” Asuka yelled. Asuka Card Count: 4, SPC: 2 Phoenix SPC: 2 “Since I have a couple of “Cloudian” monsters already in the Graveyard, by banishing one of them, like my “Cloudian – Cirrostratus”, I can Special Summon “Cloudian – Storm Dragon”. Then, I activate “Storm Dragon’s” ability, allowing me to place a “Fog Counter” on any monster on the field. I choose “Elemental Hero Nova Master”. A swirling white mist encircled the flame warrior’s body. Phoenix looked confused. “What benefits do these “Fog Counters” have,” Phoenix asked Asuka. “You will see. Now, I Normal Summon “Debris Dragon”. As you may or may not know, “Debris Dragon” has a nice little effect that lets me Special Summon any monster from my Graveyard with less than 500 ATK points, and I think “Cloudian – Poison Cloud” does the job, wouldn’t you agree? Now I tune the Level 4 “Debris Dragon” with the Level 3 “Cloudian – Poison Cloud” in order to Synchro Summon “Gungnir, Dragon of the Ice Barrier”!” Ayame was stunned to hear the exact same card name that her best friend had. Ayame looked to the ground. She was still reeling with the pain of losing one of her closest friends, but destiny had waited before Ayame; if she missed this chance, Ayame might never get another one. But then again, you can never get another chance with friends, either. Ayame had to confront the reality of this situation. “Gungnir,” she said slowly to herself. She watched the duel continue on the television set. “Nice try, but your monster doesn’t have enough ATK to stand up to my “Elemental Hero Nova Master”. (Level 8/2600 ATK/2100 DEF) Next turn, I can just demolish it,” Phoenix said with heat. “Think again. I place a card facedown and end my turn,” Asuka said. “That changed nothing. Your monster is still going down. I draw,” Phoenix yelled. Phoenix Card Count: 3, SPC: 3 Asuka SPC: 3 “Now, “Elemental Hero Nova Master”, attack “Gungnir, Dragon of the Ice Barrier”. Inferno Blast Strike!” “I activate a Trap Card, “Spirit Barrier”! Now, all battle damage I take is reduced to zero for the duration that this card is on the field,” Asuka retaliated. It was clear that she was trying to protect her monsters and her life points. It was a sound strategy, since “Cloudian” monsters couldn’t be destroyed in battle. Phoenix needed a way to intercept her strategy, but so far, he was only successful in making Asuka even angrier. "That did nothing. It only allows me to draw an extra card, since "Elemental Hero Nova Master" destroyed a monster in battle", claimed Phoenix, drawing his card. Phoenix Card Count: 4 “You will pay for that,” Asuka said vehemently. “I draw”. Asuka Card Count: 2, SPC: 4 Phoenix SPC: 4 “Excellent,” Asuka said to herself. “I activate the Speed Spell “Graceful Baton”. Since I have more than two Speed Counters, I’m allowed to draw two cards, but I ditch one from my hand. I send “Cloudian – Acid Cloud” from my hand to the Graveyard. Then, I Normal Summon “Cloudian – Turbulence” from my hand. Since there are currently two “Cloudian” monsters on the field, my “Cloudian – Turbulence” gets two “Fog Counters”. Now, I Remove two “Fog Counters” from my “Cloudian – Turbulence” in order to activate its effect, allowing me to Special Summon two “Cloudian – Smoke Balls” from my Deck. I end my turn,” Asuka triumphantly said. “That’s it? Your tiny puffballs are gonna get a taste of hellfire, Asuka,” Phoenix yelled. “I draw.” Phoenix Card Count: 5, SPC: 5 Asuka SPC: 5 “I Normal Summon “Laval Gunner”. Since he was Normal Summoned while another “Laval” monster exists in my Graveyard, by sending the top five cards of my Deck to the Graveyard, “Laval Gunner” gains 200 ATK for each “Laval” monster card sent until the End Phase.” “It’s not going to matter. I have “Spirit Barrier” active and in play, so I take no battle damage from battles,” Asuka said. Phoenix knew she was right about that, but if the combination of cards that he was about to throw away were the right ones, then he wouldn’t have to worry about anything. “Alright, here goes,” he said. The first card was a copy of “”. Now, his monster would have 1400 ATK points. He picked up the second card. It was “Slipstream”. Now, his monster would have 1400 ATK points. He picked up the second card. It was “Slipstream”. He picked up his third card. It was a copy of “Laval Forest Sprite”. That means Laval Gunner would now have 1600 ATK. Phoenix picked up his fourth card. It was a copy of “Spiritual Fire Art – Kurenai”. Phoenix grimaced at the thought of losing one of his best Trap Cards, especially in this situation where he couldn’t inflict battle damage. He picked up the fifth and final card, and it was just the card Phoenix was looking for. It was “Blazesmit Kaen”. While it wasn’t a copy of another “Laval” monster, it would give a nice boost to a “Laval’s” ATK for a turn. Laval Gunner: (4/1200/800>>4/1600/800) “Perfect. This is a sound strategy for me. Since I now have three “Laval” monsters with different names in my Graveyard, counting “Laval Lady of the Burning Lake”, “Laval Cannoneer”, and “Laval Forest Sprite”, I’m allowed to Special Summon the Tuner monster “Laval Coatl” from my hand. Now I tune the Level 2 “Laval Coatl” with the Level 4 “Laval Gunner” in order to Synchro Summon “Lavalval Fire Dragoon”.” “What was the point of all that? You can’t hurt me, so why bother,” Asuka said as vehemently as before. There was only a grin creasing Phoenix’s lips. “I think you’ll find that out soon enough. I’ll place one card facedown to end my turn.” “Fine, then, my turn,” Asuka said. Asuka Card Count: 2, SPC: 6 Phoenix SPC: 6 “Your monsters may be powerful, but in the battle between fire versus water, the droplets of purity shall always extinguish the visage of hatred. I shall now explain this principle more in depth, when I Normal Summon the Tuner monster “Geomancer of the Ice Barrier”. Before I continue, I activate the effect of “Cloudian – Storm Dragon”, allowing me to place a “Fog Counter” on your “Elemental Hero Nova Master”. Now I tune my Level 3 “Geomancer of the Ice Barrier” with my two Level 1 “Cloudian – Smoke Balls” and also my Level 4 “Cloudian – Storm Dragon”. (3+1+1+4 = 9) "Behold, the all-powerful “Trishula, Dragon of the Ice Barrier”!" Ayame’s face lit up. Ayame had thought of a possible connection between this duelist and her dearest friend, Michiko. Both of them used water-based Decks, and their strategies were almost perfect. Ayame needed to know more. She watched the duel go on, seemingly without end. “Okay, I’ll admit, your monster is more powerful than both of mine. Nevertheless, it won’t matter once I activate my facedown card. Go, Trap Card open, “Blazing Dust Explosion”,” Phoenix yelled. Asuka’s face turned into a state of disbelief. “By banishing every single “Laval” monster in my Graveyard, I can destroy a number of cards on the field equal to the number of monsters I banished. Since I have five “Laval” monsters in my Graveyard, counting “Laval Gunner”, “Laval Forest Sprite”, “Laval Lady of the Burning Lake”, “Laval Coatl”, and “Laval Cannoneer”, I’m allowed to destroy up to five cards on the field. Of course, your monsters are the ones that I am targeting. I destroy your “Spirit Barrier”, “Cloudian – Turbulence”, and “Trishula, Dragon of the Ice Barrier”.” A blaze of dust particles shot out from the Trap card. The blast of dust incinerated all of the cards on Asuka’s field, leaving her completely helpless. “A good strategy,” Asuka said to her opponent. “However, if you were smart, you would’ve destroyed the five of my monsters before I Synchro Summoned, instead of just wasting the abilities of your “Laval” monsters. I place a facedown and end my turn.” “You might think that, but my move was exceptionally brilliant,” Phoenix said arrogantly. “My turn.” Phoenix Card Count: 4, SPC: 7 Asuka SPC: 7 “Prepare yourself, because there is still plenty of carnage coming your way. My fiery ambition can never be put out by your silly puffballs,” Phoenix declared arrogantly. Asuka grimaced; she was tired of having her monsters being called “puffballs”. “This is true carnage. I activate Speed Spell “Speed Fusion” in order to fuse my “Lavalval Fire Dragoon” and my “Elemental Hero Nova Master”. Witness the carnage that results from the bonds that are forged when Dragon and Warrior are combined into one. Whether it be the fires of hell, or the icy mountains of the north and south, their spirits shall always be one. Appear, “Dragon Knight Draco-Equiste”!" There it was: Phoenix’s Ace card had been Fusion Summoned to the field. Ayame had a stuck reaction of happiness on her face; Ressen’s face did not change. He stared straight forward, deep into thought. “I’m not finished yet. My onslaught has only started. I’ll wipe you out in a single turn. When “Dragon Knight Draco-Equiste” is Fusion Summoned, by Banishing my “Lavalval Fire Dragoon”, my “Dragon Knight Draco-Equiste” is treated as the monster I Banished, and gains all of its effects. Now that it has the same effects of “Lavalval Fire Dragoon”, I’ll activate its ability, by moving “Laval Burner” from my deck to my hand, and sending “Laval Lady of the Burning Lake” to the Graveyard. Now, I activate the Speed Spell “Shift Down”.” Phoenix’s speed immediately dropped, previously from tailing Asuka to now being a great distance from her. “By removing six Speed Counters, I’m allowed to draw two new cards.” Phoenix Card Count: 4, SPC: 1 “Since I have more than three “Laval” monsters in my Graveyard, I’m allowed to Special Summon “Laval Burner” from my hand. You’re through!” (Level 5/2100 ATK/1000 DEF) Indeed, Asuka had an expression on her face that spelled anger. No, there wasn’t any way that she was going to go down like this. “Finally, by Banishing “Blazesmith Kaen” from my Graveyard, all “Laval” monsters on the field gain 400 ATK until the End Phase. Since my “Dragon Knight Draco-Equiste” is currently named a “Laval” monster, I’d say he qualifies, boosting his ATK to 3600. Dragon Knight Draco-Equiste: (10/3200/2000>>10/3600/2000) Laval Burner: (5/2100/1000>>5/2500/1000) Now attack directly, “Dragon Knight Draco-Equiste”.” “I activate a Trap, “Magic Cylinder”,” Asuka started to declare. Two cylindrical bottles appeared in the sky. “That won’t help you. I’m fully aware of what “Magic Cylinder” does, but it won’t work. Whenever “Dragon Knight Draco-Equiste” is in Attack Position, all effect damage dealt to me is instead dealt to you. Your Trap card is worthless! “Dragon Knight”, continue your assault!” The dragon with the black and red wings swooped in, holding his lance out at an attempt to strike Asuka. The two cylinders in the air disappeared, fading from view. “That was a foolish move you made. If you knew “Dragon Knight Draco-Equiste’s” effect from the start, you would have waited to play your “Magic Cylinder” Trap Card,” Phoenix said. There was a blazing fire within his soul, and his voice became more enraged. “You had plenty of chances in this duel to take advantage, yet you waited too long.” Asuka LP: 400 “Now, my “Laval Burner” can attack you again and win me this duel. Spare no one, Burner!” Asuka quickly put a hand in her pocket. Phoenix had recognized what she was trying to do: break the rules by using an illegal card. However, there seemed to be a sense of hesitation on Asuka’s part. Phoenix waited in anticipation to see what she would do. “If I pull out this Trap Card now, it’ll help me win the duel. But I can’t use it. But then again, I’ve never lost a duel in my life. I can’t go down like this,” Asuka said to herself. She looked behind her to see the “Laval Burner” closing in for the attack. “This card, “The High Priestess’s Staff” can completely cancel out the attack of his “Laval Burner”, and also inflict damage to him. It’s one of the most powerful Trap Cards that I have at my disposal. But then, if I played this card, what would my teammates think of me? I’d be cheating, trying to take advantage of my opponent, and worse, I might lose them again. We’ve worked so hard to get here; we can’t just let all of that go to waste.” “Ha? I saw what you did there,” Phoenix said with a serious face. “I see that Trap Card in your hand. You’re a coward! You’re nothing but a pathetic coward! I wonder if that’s the way you’ve gotten through all of your matches, by placing your best Trap Cards in your suit pocket and pull them out at the last minute, hoping to scrape by with victory. You’re a lousy cheat and a lousy Duelist, and no one will respect a charlatan as being a great Duelist of the century! When I’m through with you, you’re going to be kissing concrete!” Asuka had heard the reasoning within his words. Although they were harsh, Asuka didn’t want to become a lousy, pathetic duelist. She placed the card back into her pocket and sighed. “Fine. I won’t do it, if it makes you feel better,” Asuka said to her opponent, slowly, and with grief. “But just know, we’ll be back next year, and we ARE going to be better.” “Humph. I sincerely doubt that. “Laval Burner,” direct attack,” Phoenix commanded. The immense beast then slammed its fists down onto Asuka’s Duel Runner. This signaled the end of the Duel, hopefully. In Phoenix’s eyes, he had hoped that she didn’t play the Trap Card. He was relieved to find that Asuka’s Life Points were now at 0. Asuka LP: 0 Phoenix rode up to his opponent. He grimaced. “Pathetic. All talk and no skill at all. Get out of my sight.” Phoenix then drove around. Ayame had been watching the duel the entire time, and was scared at Phoenix’s new attitude. Ressen simply stared at the screen, as if something were to happen. “And that just about settles it, folks. Another successful win from Team Future Worlds puts them right in pole position. Of course, anything can happen in this next Duel, which sports Ressen Ikeda, the superstar Duelist of our time, going against the feisty Yuma Ishiko. Whom will it come down to? Who will claim victory in this first round matchup?” Ressen got up and started polishing his Duel Runner. Ayame had been standing behind Ressen’s Duel Runner as he was polishing it, waxing it clean. “Umm…Ressen,” started the nervous Ayame. But before she could finish her sentence, he put on his helmet and started up his Duel Runner. “Sorry. Whatever it is, it’s going to have to wait after my Duel.” He then rocketed out of the garage and onto the track. Ayame sighed and brushed her hands through her hair, sitting back down onto the couch. Ayame wasn’t sure how to open up to Ressen like this. “You still haven’t told me your story,” she said to herself. She was not aware that Phoenix was standing in the doorway, with his helmet off and looking Ayame dead into the eyes. Ayame became scared, not just because of his bulk and build, but also scared of Phoenix’s attitude in the Duel just now. “Ahh, Phoenix. Good job out there.” Phoenix simply turned away, not regarding Ayame’s comment. Ayame felt hurt. It seemed all the stress was getting to her. She felt nauseous, and she starting getting a headache. “Phoenix,” Ayame started to say. “Forget it,” Phoenix said. “That’s how I always am when I am dueling. I tend to lose myself and say some cruel things. And then afterwards, I feel bad for beating down my opponent.” “No, it’s just…” Ayame struggled to complete her sentence. It seemed that not everyone fully trusted each other on the team, which defied what being a team was. “Look, I know what you’re going to say. Where I come from, trust is earned, not given,” Phoenix said. “It’s no different with you. I don’t know what Ressen’s interest is with you, but…whatever it is, it must be important.” Ayame said nothing, instead fixating her gaze directly onto the television, as Ressen circled the track. Ressen’s look did not change; it was simply a stuck face of discontent. Then the phrase slowly crept into Ayame’s mind: Just in the way. Not-so-Radiant Arin
Ok, I'm battling weird Internet right now, so I'm going to try to find time to update. Probably not right now because I've got a lot of running around to do. First it is the bank, then the grocery store, then fixing up stuff for dinner, then dinner, and then maybe I'll post. But right now, I just wanted to..... BUMP.
Not-so-Radiant Arin
Alright, I am posting Chapter 14 now, or else I'll forget.
Chapter 14 – Spirits of Fire, Water, and Wind, Part 3 “Alright, it’s anyone’s game out there, folks. This will be the last duel for Team Future Worlds before they move onto the quarterfinal round. Just to give you an update on the other team’s progress in this tournament, Team Shadow Lair decimated all of their opponents, Team Hyperdrive. We have yet to see great potential from this team that decided to participate in the tournament without a single Duel Runner, which is unheard of! The returning members of Team Excelion easily struck down Team Parabola, with an annihilating performance from each member of the team. Lastly, newcomers Team Sonic Buster fell victim to Team Armageddon’s combined power and strategy. They stood no chance. “But now, the final duel for Team Future Worlds is about to commence. We have the legendary Duelist Ressen Ikeda going up against Team Black Rain’s Yuma Ishiko. It’s leader versus leader, and you don’t want to miss it.” /-/ Ressen took his spot at the starting line, counting the cards in his deck. His Deck of 44 never failed him; it was his lucky number. Ressen was deep in thought until he heard the rumble of his opponent’s Duel Runner pulling up to him. “Well, well, the legendary Duelist of our time, Ressen Ikeda,” Yuma said. “We finally meet face-to-face.” “I wouldn’t have it any other way,” Ressen retaliated. “Listen to me. There are some shady characters that are Dueling this year, and it stems from that Team Shadow Lair. I don’t trust any of them. Our team wants to help you. There is someone pulling the strings on this year’s tournament. I just know it.” Yuma stared straightforward, looking at the road before her. “And I suppose you want to take them down in the quarter-finals so you can take all the credit. Sorry, but that’s not going to happen. I’ll beat you and stop them myself if I have to,” Ressen said with a grin. “But I appreciate the “get-together” strategy that your Team is trying to employ. Where I come from, trust is earned, not given.” “Humph. I’ve heard that saying a lot of times before. I used to grow up in the Satellite, just like you. We are alone, you and I. We don’t fit in anywhere in society, so what other choice do we have than to Duel?” “But, by that retrospect, we aren’t alone. We have our team members to comfort us and give us hope.” Ressen hung his head. “At least, that’s what I used to think. Now, I fight for myself.” “Isn’t it time that you started trying to save others,” Yuma questioned. Ressen looked over to his opponent. There seemed to be a look of sadness in her eyes, yet, at the same time, there seemed to be a hint of salvation within them. The olive-colored eyes then turned back forward. “I’m not saying that you have to give yourself up, but…just watch your back. We’ll try to help you every way we can throughout this tournament.” Ressen scoffed. “Who are you really? Why did you enter this tournament?” “You first,” Yuma retaliated. “Why did YOU enter? Is it possibly because you were bored of how things were going? Possibly because of your new team member?” “My partner has nothing to do with this,” Ressen turned, yelling to his opponent. Yuma’s gaze was still fixed on the road before her. “The reason I’m Dueling…is to save everyone in the Satellite, including my sisters. They have always been there for me, but when they were stricken with illness, I wanted to be there for them. “But it was rough in the Satellite. You had street gangs in one alleyway, and the next you had Sector Security stalking your every move. And even though on the surface, everyone says that everything is getting better in the Satellite, it really hasn’t. Not even after nine years since the Daedalus Bridge was built. At least before, I didn’t have to deal with the rich, snobby people with golden coats and expensive jewelry looking down at me like some disease-ridden fleabag. I wanted to show those people wrong. Anyone can be an incredible Turbo Duelist if you set your heart to it.” “Humph. Enough with the backstory,” Ressen said critically. “I activate the Field Spell, “Speed World 2”. I think it’s about time I showed you what real Dueling is.” “Fine, but my Mist Dragunities are going to show you true power. Since your Deck is comprised of discarding power, I’ve brought the perfect power Deck to stop you cold in your tracks.” Yuma then grinned. Ressen turned to see a glint in Yuma’s right eye. Ressen had now realized how had Yuma was working to save the people in the Satellite. Ressen LP: 4000 Yuma LP: 4000 The countdown initiated. “This is for you, Sylvia. And for you, Trianna. I will save you,” Yuma said to herself. The countdown then hit the green light, and both Turbo Duelists rocketed off, burning rubber as they did so. Ressen followed his opponent closely, trailing her to see what kind of move she will make. The race was neck and neck, with Ressen following the outside of the track. If this kept up, then Yuma would be able to make the first move. Fortunately, Ressen still had more under his hood. He pressed the gas on his Duel Runner and accelerated to the outside of the track. However, he was unable to keep his foot on the gas. He let off, to see Yuma in his rear-view mirror. He then realized, however, that Yuma was quickly gaining up on him. “Too slow, kid,” Yuma said, as she took the inside of the corner, ultimately passing Ressen and allowing her to make the first move. Ressen Card Count: 5, SPC: 0 Yuma Card Count: 6, SPC: 0 “Alright, if you don’t want our help, then I’ll just beat it out of you. I Normal Summon “Dragunity Miltium”. Then, I’ll place a card facedown and end my turn.” Ressen Card Count: 6, SPC: 1 Yuma SPC: 1 “Alright then,” Ressen said. “Before you continue, I activate a Trap, “Reaction Graveyard”.
Trap Card Tribute 1 Level 4 monster you control. For the next 2 turns, effects that activate in the Graveyard (for both players) are negated.
"This card is a personal favorite of mine, since I got the chance to design it myself. Here’s how it works: I Tribute one monster on the field, and for the next two turns, effects that activate in the graveyard are negated. This effectively cripples the power of your Special Summoning from the Graveyard. I’m sorry, but I need to save my sisters.” “Damn,” Ressen thought to himself. His hand was almost entirely made up of Graveyard control, so it will be a struggle to get the appropriate monsters out on the field. “She really got me this time.” “What’s the matter? Is what I said getting to you? What I said about the Satellite not getting better after so long? Perhaps because you’ve been away for so long that you have forgotten what really mattered: a home that you could call “home”.” “I have a home, and it’s right here in the city,” Ressen scolded. “I Normal Summon “Brron, Mad King of Dark World”. And then, I’ll have him attack you directly.” The four-armed monster then grabbed his whip and made a direct attack on Yuma’s Life Points. Yuma LP: 2200 “Of course, when “Brron, Mad King of Dark World” deals battle damage, I can send one card in my hand to the Graveyard. I choose “Fabled Grimro”. Then, I’ll set one card facedown and end my turn.” “It won’t help you. The abilities of your monsters that activate in your Graveyard are negated for another two turns. I draw,” Yuma said. Yuma Card Count: 5, SPC: 2 Ressen Card Count: 3, SPC: 2 “Before you proceed, I activate a Trap Card, “Jar of Greed”. It’s simple; I draw one card from my Deck.” Ressen Card Count: 4 “Replenish your hand all you like, it won’t help you. I Normal Summon “Dragunity Aklys”. And when “Dragunity Aklys” is Normal Summoned, I can Special Summon an additional “Dragunity” monster from my hand and treat it as an Equip Card. I choose “Dragunity Dux”. I’ll then place a card facedown and end my turn.” “My draw, then,” Ressen replied. Ressen Card Count: 5, SPC: 3 Yuma SPC: 3 This strategy was almost perfect. If Ressen could last one more turn, then he would be able to win without even having to discard any more cards. This could be a risky gamble, but he was ready to take the risk. “I’m attacking “Dragunity Aklys” with “Brron, Mad King of Dark World”. “Ha! Predictable,” Yuma said. “Trap Card open, “Defense Draw”. This stops your attack and I draw a card from my Deck.” Yuma Card Count: 3 “Figured as much. I end my turn,” Ressen said despairingly. “My move,” Yuma said, drawing her card. Yuma Card Count: 4, SPC: 4 Ressen SPC: 4 “I Normal Summon “Mist Valley Falcon”. He might look powerful, but he can’t attack right now. That is, unless I place one card on the field back into my hand. I choose my “Dragunity Dux” currently equipped as an Equip Card on my “Dragunity Aklys”. Yuma Card Count: 4 “Now, I’ll attack “Brron, Mad King of Dark World” with my “Mist Valley Falcon”. You’re wide open!” As the falcon swooped down, sword extended to slice at the fiend with the whip, the bird squawked, diminishing the fiend into a hundred pixels. Ressen LP: 3800 “Now, my “Dragunity Aklys” can go in for a direct attack.” Ressen LP: 2800 “Now, since my monsters have finished attacking, I think I’m going to Synchro Summon them. I’m tuning the Level 2 “Dragunity Aklys” with the level 4 “Mist Valley Falcon”. The monsters of different origin shall combine and sing divine harmony! Combine the might of the winds, and yield me victory! Synchro Summon, “Dragunity Knight – Gae Dearg”. Then, I’ll use my “Gae Dearg’s” effect to move “Dragunity Legionnaire” from my Deck to my hand. As such, I must get rid of “Dragunity Dux” from my hand. Finally, I’ll place two cards facedown. That’s all.” Ressen had taken a beating on that last attack. But it wouldn’t matter. He would be able to end this quicker than anyone could anticipate. “It’s my move, and I think you’re going to regret not going full out. Especially since the effect of your “Reaction Graveyard” ends this turn. Ressen Card Count: 6, SPC: 5 Yuma SPC: 5 “You were so busy with your monsters and trying to figure out my strategy that you have seem to have forgotten about the cards that really exist in my hand. I activate the effect of “Speed World 2”. By removing four Speed Counters, I can deal 800 points of damage for every Speed Spell I am currently holding. You aren’t going to like the looks of this.” Ressen flipped three cards in his hand so that Yuma could see them. “Right now, I am currently holding Speed Spell “Graceful Baton”, Speed Spell “Count Up”, and Speed Spell “Tune Up 1-2-3”. I warned you before the Duel that I was going to win this one for our team. Three Speed Spells and 800 points of damage for each total out to 2400 points of damage. You’re through!” Ressen SPC: 1 A beam of lightning jutted out from Ressen’s Duel Runner. There was a grin on his face, and he definitely felt as though he had won. However, Yuma’s face had a grin on it as well. “Ha! I am prepared to deal with any situation. It seems you failed to realize that, Ressen! Trap Card open, “Burst Synchro Summon”. With this, I reduce the effect damage to 0, and then, I’m allowed to Special Summon a Synchro Monster with 2400 ATK points from my Extra Deck, completely ignoring the Summoning Conditions. Say hello to another “Dragunity Knight – Gae Dearg”!” Ressen had backed himself into a corner. There was no possible way that he was going to make this work. “You’ll never be able to get past my strategy, Ressen Ikeda. Once I take you down, I’ll become the Queen of Dueling,” Yuma said. “And then, I’ll be able to save all of the people in the Satellite.” “I’m not through. It’s still my turn, so don’t get excited. I Normal Summon “Fabled Raven”. Then, I activate its effect, allowing me to discard a number of cards in my hand. In turn, my “Fabled Raven” gains 400 ATK and an additional level for every card I send.” “So you’re going to discard all of your Speed Spells in order to boost your monster’s ATK,” Yuma strategically said. “But what good will that do you? Are you trying to use brute force to win this Duel?” “Perhaps. You are half-right. I am going to get rid of Speed Spell “Tune Up 1-2-3”, but I’m also getting rid of “Goldd, Wu-Lord of Dark World” and “Gren, Tactician of the Dark World” in my hand. I think you shall see my strategy soon enough. Fabled Raven: (2/1300/1000>>5/2500/1000) Ressen Card Count: 3 Also, since “Goldd, Wu-Lord of the Dark World” was discarded, I’m allowed to Special Summon him from the Graveyard. And also, since “Gren, Tactician of Dark World” was discarded, I can destroy one card on the field. I’m choosing that facedown card.” The card burst into a hundred pixels. It was a copy of “Spiritual Wind Art – Miyabi”. “I will now perform a Synchro Summon!” Ressen felt his Duel Runner wobbling and shaking. This was strange. He had never felt this before. “Well, what are you waiting for,” Yuma called out to Ressen. “Humph. Eager, aren’t you? I tune the Level 5 “Fabled Raven” with the level 5 “Goldd, Wu-Lord of the Dark World”. Watch as the mighty struggle between lightness and darkness descends onto the battlefield, as these monsters struggle for sovereignty over the Dark World! Synchro Summon, Prince of Angels, “Fabled Leviathan”!” A holy angel with red wings and a mask covering his face descended onto the field. The deity was covered in golden armor. Ayame sat upright in her chair, gasping at the awesome card that Ressen just played. “Now, I’ll attack your first “Dragunity Knight – Gae Dearg”. Go, “Fabled Leviathan”, use your “Angelic Fury” attack!” The angel stuck its claw into the dragon knight, banishing it into a white void. Yuma looked to her monster, only to have her eyes blinded by the awesome light. Yuma LP: 1600 “I’ll play one facedown card. Your move, and make it count,” Ressen said. “Oh, I will. I have a move that’ll blow you out of the arena,” Yuma retaliated. Yuma Card Count: 3, SPC: 6 Ressen SPC: 2 “This is just the kind of strategy that shall prevail over all of the other Duelists. This is what ultimate power is. I Normal Summon “Delta Flyer”.” “Humph. You might want to overlook your definition of “ultimate power”,” Ressen scoffed. “I’m not done. Don’t interrupt me,” Yuma said harshly. “When “Delta Flyer” is Normal Summoned, its effect allows me to increase the level of any other monster on the field by 1. I choose to increase “Dragunity Knight – Gae Dearg’s” level by 1. (6/2400/800>>7/2400/800) Now, I shall Synchro Summon! I tune the Level 3 “Delta Flyer” with the Level 7 “Dragunity Knight – Gae Dearg”. Out of two dragon’s souls becomes one mighty beast of the dragon kin. This monster is the ultimate incarnation of the spirit that dwells within each dragon’s heart. I Synchro Summon, “Trident Dragion”. Ressen couldn’t believe it. It was the ultimate Dragon monster, “Trident Dragion”. “Do you see why I won’t go down easy, Ressen! I’m doing this to save everyone in the Satellite! I activate the Speed Spell “Power Baton”. Since I currently have six Speed Counters, by sending one monster card from my Deck to the Graveyard, my monster gains ATK equal to the monster that I sent. So, I send “Dragunity Arma Leyvaten”, which has 2600 ATK, to the Graveyard to boost “Trident Dragion’s” ATK all the way to 5600.” (10/3000/2800>>10/5600/2800) Ressen looked onward at his opponent. This did not look good for him at all. He was staring down a monster with 5600 ATK. What could Ressen possibly do now?
Synchronized
CHAPTER 1 – The Duelist with Speed I thought drugs were illegal...moving on. It was the first time in a long time that someone had stepped up to the plate. It was the first time that someone had actually tried challenging the master of dueling. Moreover, it would all end up the same way: their Duel Runners crashed and banged up, with pieces scattered all over the track. Gone from his absence for a long time, the current champion of New Domino City ran the swiftest, fiercest Deck out there. It was no wonder some called him the next “Rising Star”. That seems awful brutal, no? I mean, is our rising star [s]Jack Atlas[/s] the protagonist? His duels were broadcast all over television; in fact, almost every major news network in the world had to cover the story of the great Duelist of our time. He had seen victory flashing before his eyes, and he would take on any foe that stood in his way. There was only one thing that mattered to him, and it was the thrill of the Duel. Being able to ride along with the wind while seeing the most fearsome beasts in the Duel Monsters universe is all he ever cared for. I feel bad for the kid's parents. And his poor dog. Tonight, someone else was stepping up to the plate. This pathetic, sad excuse for a Duelist thinks he can outrun and out-power the world’s greatest Duelist? There was a slim chance of that ever happening. He would crush this pathetic Duelist into the dirt, and then move on to the next Duel, and repeat the cycle. I already don't like this guy. He's a total jerk. I'm hoping he's not the main character, because if so that's totally ruining this story for me. That said, you've got a good writing style, even though it feels more like you're advertising something than telling a story, but I'm sure that's just the introduction. In the garage, he began tuning his Duel Runner. His prized possession, the machine-love of his life, was this Duel Runner that he custom built in the Satellite. Oh! It's Yusei Fudo! It was tough back in the Satellite, so he needed every possible card in order to keep himself alive, both in the real world and in the world of Duel Monsters. He tightened the chassis; he oiled up the engine; he took his runner to the dyno. He cared about his Duel Runner almost as much as he cared about the thrill of the Duel. The two ideals were in harmony. You told us this already, pretty much. It's feeling really repetitive already and I'm only three paragraphs or so in. It was almost time. He started pushing his Duel Runner out of the garage. She looked over at her clock in the corner of her room. It said 21:29, but she simply just chuckled to herself. She was accustomed to staying up this late. After all, it wasn’t every day that you get to see the world’s greatest duelist on television. This was to be a special night, in which everyone will remember. She grabbed her cup of coffee that sat in the corner of her desk. Her cards were neatly organized into piles of Monsters, Spells, Traps, and Synchro Monsters. She looked at her ace card. It was a rare copy of “XX-Saber Gottoms”. She had won this card back when she lived in the Satellite, and she had kept it ever since. It was a perfect fit to her Deck. She was recognized at New Domino Duel Academy as being the greatest Duelist of her class. She received A+ Status every time, and her Deck was compiled of the most powerful and greatest combination of Monsters, Spells, Traps, and Synchro Monsters that guaranteed her victory every time. I don't like how much you use "he" and "she". I do it sometimes, too, but it just makes it so there's very little transition. Also, when you're switching to a different character perspective, or a different part of the story, per se, use "---" or something like that just to show that change. “Hmm…Charge of the Light Brigade…” She then flipped over the top three cards of her Deck. They were “Bottomless Trap Hole”, “X-Saber Darksoul”, and “Wulf, Lightsworn Beast”. No one knows what these do (obviously I do, but I'm talking about in the sense of a new reader); what is the point of this? “And then there is that effect…” She moved the “Wulf, Lightsworn Beast” to her imaginary Monster Card Zone. She often would go over card combinations in her head to see how they would all play out. She was famous around the school for her most favorite card combination, which combined the might of the heavens and the might of the earth. She called it Light End Dragon. I don't like how much you tell. You're telling way too much way too early. It's just fact after fact after fact and though you write well, it makes the story significantly less enjoyable. She looked over at her television. She had it muted this whole time, because she couldn’t afford distractions right now. Now that the Duel was about to get under way, she couldn’t miss this opportunity. “Duelists, young and old, professional and amateur alike, it’s the moment you’ve been waiting for,” the MC said. “We’ve been anticipating this Duel ever since the two built a huge rivalry against one another that lasted for four years. Now, it’s finally time to settle this the old-fashioned way! As we all know, this Dueling Arena is built specifically for Turbo Duels, and there is no better way to settle it than here on the track! Introducing, the Grand Terror of New Domino City, the definition of callous, the scathing skeether, I give you, Ramsey Mars!” The terrible name factory called, they- There was a cascade of boos and jeers that followed from the crowd. From the Pit Stop Area appeared a Duel Runner painted with blue and turquoise pearlescent paint. There was a single white stripe going across the body of the Duel Runner. The Duelist, Ramsey, was dressed in a white body suit. He circled around the arena, waving to the crowd as he went by. However, the crowd’s reaction did not change, not even in the least bit. The girl watching the television set simply shrugged and returned to her card organizing. It's like a Jack Atlas ripoff. Even the outfit. I don't like the lack of creativity here. “And now, the moment we’ve all been waiting for! The Grand Champion is about to announce his comeback. I give you, the master of speed, agility, and a Deck with a power-packed punch proven to put any pal in his place.” The announcer started following an alliteration pattern. “Here he is, Ressen Ikeda!” Instantly, the crowd exploded with cheers and “woo-hoops”, with occasional whistling and grunting noises coming from the audience. From out of the Pit Stop Area came a rider with green hair that stretched all the way to his shoulders, a teal body suit, and, unbelievably, no helmet. His Duel Runner was blue and silver, but when the moon’s light reflected on the Duel Runner’s paint, it seemed to turn dark purple. He made one lap around the track before he came to the starting position. Which one is the good guy; the one you were talking about at the beginning of the story, I mean. Because if Ressen's the "Grand Champion" you were talking about, he's a jerk, too. “Now, kiddies, I know that we are all excited, but there are a couple of ground rules that we need to cover. First off, in a Turbo Duel, you are not, I repeat, you are NOT allowed to use any Spells other than Speed Spells. Well, you technically don’t have to follow this rule, but if you don’t, let’s just say it might sting you a little bit. Second, the first person to make the first corner gets to go first. This is a race for speed and power, as well as prestige. Well, I think that’s all I want to cover. Everyone, start your engines!” Ressen pulled up to his foe and looked him dead in the eye. “You’re going down! It’s time to settle things!” “I couldn’t agree with you more,” Ramsey said. “I activate the Field Spell “Speed World 2”!” I don't like that they both yelled. Ramsey, as the confident, cocky guy he's supposed to be, should've totally talked in a calm, almost Sasuke-like demeanor, to demonstrate that. The girl watching the television had just pulled out another one of her favorite cards, “Light End Dragon”. A fortuneteller had given this particularly powerful card her. The fortuneteller said that if she kept this card, then it‘d ward off bad spirits. She didn’t believe such things, though. Something about this story is just not clicking with me. I don't like how, and I'm not trying to be rude or anything, boring and uncreative it seems so far. There's not even a slight hook that says "This is totally gonna be a story worth continuing to read." “And they’re off,” the MC said. “This looks to be a promising Duel!” The girl watched in awe, staring at her television set. Ressen pushed his Duel Runner to the very max. He had tried to pass Ramsey, but he could tell that he also had upped his game within the last several years. It was a close neck-and-neck confrontation all the way to the first turn, but ultimately, Ramsey had the final say, as he accelerated out of the corner and into first place. Both Duelists immediately drew their five card opening hand. “That was a big mistake, Ramsey. You should have let me go first.” “Ha! No way, Ressen. Those that fall behind are the ones who think the slowest! It’s my draw!” Ressen LP: 4000 Ramsey LP: 4000 Ramsey drew his sixth card. Ramsey Card Count: 6 “I Normal Summon Dance Princess of the Ice Barrier And then I’ll end my turn.” “That’s all? You’re making this too easy for me!” Ressen said arrogantly. Ressen Card Count: 6, SPC: 1 Ramsey Card Count: 5, SPC: 1 I DON'T GET IT. IF THE CROWD CHEERS RESSEN, WHY IS HE THE ARROGANT DOUCHEBAG? AND IF SO, WHY BOO MARS? AS A READER, WHO AM I GETTING BEHIND HERE? “I activate the effect of The Fabled Chawa from my hand. By discarding 1 “Fabled” monster from my hand, I’m allowed to Special Summon him. Come out, my pet! "In addition, since The Fabled Ganashia was discarded to the Graveyard by a card effect, I’m allowed to Special Summon him as well! Now I tune Level 1 “The Fabled Chawa” with Level 3 “The Fabled Ganashia” in order to Synchro Summon The Fabled Unicore! "But it gets better. See, I haven’t even Normal Summoned yet, which is what I am going to do now! Come out, Fabled Raven! My Raven has quite the ability. See, by sending a number of cards from my hand to the Graveyard, “Fabled Raven” gets 400 extra ATK and 1 extra level for every card I send. So I send Sillva, Warlord of Dark World from my hand to the Graveyard in order to boost Raven’s ATK and level! And since “Sillva, Warlord of Dark World” was sent to the Graveyard via card effect, she is Special Summoned to my field! "Now I’ll tune again, with the Level 3 “Fabled Raven” and Level 5 “Sillva, Warlord of Dark World”. Watch as the mighty struggle between lightness and darkness descends onto the battlefield, as these monsters struggle for sovereignty over the Dark World! Synchro Summon, Second Crown, Fabled Valkyrus!" And that was all in one turn. The girl looked on in amazement as she struggled to contemplate the move that Ressen had just made. What was that that he Synchro Summoned just now? Lucky opening hand. You don't really describe any of the monsters, though. I mean, I don't describe them all, but to at least create some sort of visual, you should've described one or two. “I’m not done yet, though! I activate the effect of “Fabled Valkyrus”, which allows me to ditch 1 Fiend-Type monster in my hand, and in return, I draw another card. Since I just discarded Beiige, Vanguard of the Dark World, he is Special Summoned to my field. Now, I’ll attack. “The Fabled Unicore”, attack his Dance Princess.” Ramsey LP: 3300 “And now, my “Fabled Valkyrus” and “Beiige, Vanguard of the Dark World” can move in for a direct attack. Go, Valkyrus, “Dark Crashing Wave”!” Ramsey LP: 0 And just like that, it was over. The duel ended in just two turns. Wow. That was bad. Not grammatically, but that was just bad. I haven't enjoyed this at all yet. I'm hoping that as the story continues, it gets better, but this is more bland that that time I had a "watching paint dry" contest with a blind kitten. And I lost. “Wow-how-how! That was absolutely unbelievable,” the MC started ranting. “It was over in the blink of an eye! I’ve never seen fast quite that fast before! Ressen really has sharpened up his skills a lot during his time off! I wonder who will be next!” The girl looked at her cards again. She ever wondered if she would ever be like Ressen. It was unbelievable that he could end the match so swiftly. She was sure shocked at this spectacle. It's like she forgets what cards are in her Deck. “Hey, Ayame, I’m coming in!” “Okay,” the girl said. She counted her cards. Again. There from the doorway stood a girl wearing a red outfit: red dress shirt with red pleated skirt. She had blonde hair that was tied and held by a ribbon in the back. She had on her most expensive jewelry, which consisted of her necklace, held together by beads, her ring, and her wristwatch, which was an hour late on the time. She appeared slightly tanner than usual; in fact, it almost looked like she was burnt from the sun. She instantly knew who it was. It was Michiko, and the two were practically family ever since they came to New Domino Duel Academy. But now, it will be their last year that they will ever spend together, so they almost wanted to do everything together. That is, for some things… Okay, dude, you tell way too much. It's really, really bad. It's like a biography. I don't need to know the time on the wristwatch, or what the necklace was held together with, or that the girl was slightly tanner. It just takes away from the story. Description is good, but you killed description. You shot it, revived it, shot it again, then buried it in the ground, dug it up, and burned it. It's so overdone right now. “Did you go tanning again? It’s fifty degrees out,” the girl sorting her cards said. She grimaced as Michiko slouched on the bunk bed. “That was very ill-mannered of you.” “Hey, would you relax,” Michiko said. “I told you that I would be back before the duel started, Ayame. I didn’t want to–” “It’s already over,” Ayame interjected. “What? You’re kidding!” Michiko then looked at the television set. Ressen appeared on screen with the MC and a newscaster, who had been interviewing him. He suddenly took the microphone from the MC. “Listen up, everyone! If you want a challenge, or simply want to get your Duel Runner banged up, you know where to find me! I rule these streets, and if anyone tries to mess with my throne, I will guarantee that I will royally be all over you!” He then walked off towards his Duel Runner and made a victory lap. “Wow…that Ressen guy sure is something, huh?” Michiko asked herself. “Sure is.” “Hey, don’t get discouraged. I know you’re gonna rule the streets one of these days.” Michiko put an arm around her friend’s shoulder. “I just know it. You have the Duel Runner and the Deck; all that is stopping you is this building! Once you’re outta here, freedom is yours!” Freedom. The thought excited Ayame…but this was her home. There was no way she could let home go so easily, not to mention her best friend. She had been here for the past four years, and the ties and friendships that she created while she was here would last for an eternity. She couldn’t just throw it away now. Ayame shuffled her Deck. “Hey, wanna have a Duel real quick?” Michiko asked. “Ha! You know, sometimes, I prefer a challenge.” Ayame answered. She pulled out her “XX-Saber Hyunlei”. Then she moved her “XX-Saber Pashuul” and “X-Saber Anu Piranha” from the “field” to the “Graveyard”. It was obviously clear that she has going over card combos. “But sure, why not?” “I think you’ll find that my Deck is not the same as last time. I’m gonna whoop you good this time!” Michiko said, full of herself. Ayame sighed; it was impossible to change this girl’s traits. “You’re on!” Ayame said. I don't intend this to be rude at all, but that was rough. Normally, reading a story it should have a great flow. I felt like I had to work to get through that, and I kept looking at the arrow to see how much longer there was until it was done. You can definitely write, that much is for sure. And your descriptions are overdone, but if you tone them down, you'll actually be pretty good in that respect. I might be willing to check out Episode 2 (yes, I know you're on 14), but this was definitely not a good way to start. I'm no person to talk; a lot of my writing has been really bad, and far worse than this, but I'm just saying, it felt really repetitive and the descriptions were too much. Plus, there's no character I can relate to up to this point. I feel like there's no protagonist. You can relate to Yusei in 5D's, and Jaden in GX (even though he was lame), because they're working to achieve something. Ressen's a total jerk. Also, if you've got a moment, maybe you could take a look at my Fan-Fic, and leave a comment! IceDorago
Good chapter, but there a few things I need to say: 1. The fact that that girl is named Yuma scares me, as it makes me think of Yuma Tsukumo every time I see the name. 2. You misunderstood Aklys's effect. When summoned, it brings out a monster and then Aklys becomes the equip card, not the other way around.
Not-so-Radiant Arin
Hmm, two comments....well, I'd better get to work.

I already don't like this guy. He's a total jerk. I'm hoping he's not the main character, because if so that's totally ruining this story for me. That said, you've got a good writing style, even though it feels more like you're advertising something than telling a story, but I'm sure that's just the introduction.
Unfortunately, he is one of the protagonists of the story.
I don't like how much you use "he" and "she". I do it sometimes, too, but it just makes it so there's very little transition. Also, when you're switching to a different character perspective, or a different part of the story, per se, use "---" or something like that just to show that change.
Sorry, but if center formatting worked around here, I would certainly go back and change that. Deal with it. And I'm not saying that to be a jerk-off, but we pretty much need to get used to it until it does actually get fixed. So.......deal with it.
I don't like how much you tell. You're telling way too much way too early. It's just fact after fact after fact and though you write well, it makes the story significantly less enjoyable.
I will admit that my writing style is not the most enjoyable to some readers, but some people have commented that I write like how a movie producer would write. As such, I have stuck to that principle. It's either a love it or hate it.
I don't like that they both yelled. Ramsey, as the confident, cocky guy he's supposed to be, should've totally talked in a calm, almost Sasuke-like demeanor, to demonstrate that.
Funny. If I wanted them to yell, I would have put "....Ramsey yelled.", because that is proper writing style. You obviously assume too much.
I DON'T GET IT. IF THE CROWD CHEERS RESSEN, WHY IS HE THE ARROGANT DOUCHEBAG? AND IF SO, WHY BOO MARS? AS A READER, WHO AM I GETTING BEHIND HERE?
1. No need to yell. 2. The reason that they are booing Mars is because they ARE sympathizing with Ressen, because he is the champ. Get it? Everyone loves someone who demands attention.
Lucky opening hand. You don't really describe any of the monsters, though. I mean, I don't describe them all, but to at least create some sort of visual, you should've described one or two.
Yes it was. I find it my falling point that I did not describe any of the monsters here, but I have gotten better at it as I have progressed through writing my fan-fic. If I ever go back and decide to fix it up (probably not, since I've got another idea swirling around in my head right now), that would be one of the premiere things that I would change. Trust me though, if you read one of the later chapters, like 13 or 14, then they are more descriptive and more "bold", in essence.
Wow. That was bad. Not grammatically, but that was just bad. I haven't enjoyed this at all yet. I'm hoping that as the story continues, it gets better, but this is more bland that that time I had a "watching paint dry" contest with a blind kitten. And I lost.
Was that really necessary? I really appreciate the fact that you really took my story apart and analyzed it piece-by-piece, but comments like this are why I want to stab people. They don't contribute anything to the writer as to where he/she should direct his editing later. Also, I'm sorry that you lost. Overall, I felt like your review was just an excuse to slander another person's fabulous story without actually contributing anything as to how to improve the story or make it better. And if I hurt your feelings, sorry. I appreciate the feedback, but if you are going to throw comments around and suggest as to how not to make it better, than you have wasted my time. Thank you, and goodbye.

1. Yuma is actually a common name to use for either a Japanese guy (obviously from ZeXAL) or a Japanese girl. I like the name actually. 2. Really? Well, it wouldn't really have changed anything, because "Dragunity Dux" can only get its effect from when it is Normal Summoned, so nothing would really change.
IceDorago
I'm pretty sure Dux would have still gotten his other effect to boost by 200 per Dragunity out, so he could have beaten Brron.

Synchronized
First off, I definitely didn't think it was poorly written, and have already begun reading Chapter 2. No need to get so defensive, as I offered the comments as a way to be honest and suggest changes. Trust me, I've had MUCH worse things said about my own so many times, and eventually I grew immune to it. You're an extremely talented writer. I did suggest things; I suggested including more duel action, using slightly less description, and modifying your pronouns. I didn't assume, I said that they yelled because you used exclamation marks, which generally means yelling. I made a joke to somewhat relate the fact that there was parts of the story that were really bland, but by no means did I say you couldn't write. I just think there are a few changes that should be made. However, I'll be the first to say that I haven't finished reading the story and I'm sure it's likely that you've improved far more since the original episode. I do apologize if any of my response was taken out of context as I was intending to help and give some actual advice. Saying it's bad doesn't mean I'm flaming it because I did provide actual things I think you should include to improve it.

Not-so-Radiant Arin
Alright, here is Chapter 15. Still trying to figure out how to work the code that does that links to the post that the Chapter is in. Or I might just be working for the next couple of days of moving all of the Chapters back to the OP. Will Ressen be able to make a comeback from Yuma's all-powerful monster? Or will Ressen get knocked out of the competition, leaving his teammates utterly hopeless? Let's find out
Chapter 15 – Spirits of Fire, Water, and Wind, Part 4 Ayame, Kaori, and Phoenix couldn’t believe what they were seeing on their television screen. Yuma’s monster had gained 5600 ATK points. Ayame hung her head, thinking that he would be ultimately finished. “He’s done for, isn’t he?” “Not quite,” Phoenix said. “He still has a facedown, and it could change everything.” Ayame lifted her head. There was then a grin creasing her lips. “Ressen has been in tougher situations than this,” Phoenix continued. “He is the best duelist that I know. He’ll pull through somehow, because he believes in the power of his Deck.” Ayame’s face had turned into a bright smile once again. Kaori brushed her hair back behind her ears, her expression unchanging. She looked over at Phoenix. Kaori’s face was still bright as ever. /-/ Ressen was utterly pinned down. But he still had a facedown, but didn’t know if it could help. This situation isn’t the worst, though. Yuma Card Count: 2, Life Points: 1600, SPC: 6 Ressen Card Count: 3, Life Points: 2800, SPC: 2 “Don’t forget, Ressen, by the effect of my Speed Spell “Power Baton” that “Trident Dragion’s” attack during the Damage Step equals 5600,” Yuma said. “I told you that I was going to save everyone in the Satellite. My intentions are for the better, but all you do is bring destruction and chaos, and seek to make people feel worse about themselves.” “What do you mean by that,” Ressen contemplated. “Just that. Every Turbo Duelist that I have ever met has had the same goal in mind: to become the best. In truth, they don’t care about the people that they take on; they just do it for the thrill and ambition. You are no different, Ressen Ikeda.” Yuma then turned her Duel Runner around so that she was riding backwards.” Now, “Trident Dragion,” attack his “Fabled Leviathan”. Win me this Duel.” It was now or never. Ressen had to activate his Trap Card. “Trap Card open, “Dimensional Balance”.” The “Trident Dragion” prepared a flaming breath attack as it closed in, while the “Fabled Leviathan” prepared a shining ray of light. The two attacks made contact with each other, but the dragon’s strength overpowered the angel’s. The collision from the two attacks kicked up a dust storm. Ressen felt the pain of the monster’s ATK, bringing him down to his last 200 Life Points. Ressen LP: 200 However, Ressen was able to play his Trap Card. When the dust settled from the attacks, Yuma was in shock. Her monster had disappeared from the playing field. “What’s going on, where is my monster,” she asked. “It’s gone. I activated my Trap Card just before your attack. It’s called “Dimensional Balance”, and it activated when you destroyed by “Fabled Leviathan” in battle. Your monster is removed from the game entirely, and during the End Phase, my monster returns to the field. Your field is wide open for a direct attack next turn. Yuma did not speak for a while. How was he able to counter her strategy so quickly? Yuma that it was almost perfect. Apparently, it wasn’t. She cursed herself and looked at the only two cards in her hand left. “Fine then. I’ll place one card facedown and end my turn,” Yuma said. “Then, that makes it my move,” Ressen said, his "Fabled Leviathan" reappearing on his side of the field. Ressen Card Count: 4, SPC: 3 Yuma Card Count: 2, SPC: 7 “I activate the Speed Spell “Count Up”. You knew I had this card from the beginning, and I feel now it is the perfect time to use it. By discarding a number of cards from my hand, I gain two Speed Counters for each card sent. However, the speed doesn’t concern me. Now, it’s the power that I gain when the light shines on the battlefield. I send “The Fabled Cerburrel” and Speed Spell “Graceful Baton” to boost my Speed Counters all the way up to 7.” Ressen Card Count: 1, SPC: 7 “And now, since “The Fabled Cerburrel” was discarded due to a card effect, he is Special Summoned from the Graveyard. Now, I activate the effect of “Speed World 2”. By removing seven of my Speed Counters, I get to draw an additional card from my Deck.” Ressen Card Count: 2, SPC: 0 “Then, I’ll place two cards facedown. Now, “The Fabled Cerburrel”, direct attack.” The ferocious tiger leapt towards its opponent, scratching the Turbo Duelist, then leaping back and starting keeping pace with Ressen again. Yuma LP: 600 “You aren’t giving up, are you,” Ressen said arrogantly. “Never. I won’t give up. Not until I can see the faces of my sisters smile again. This is the only joy that they get. The thought of seeing me Turbo Duel is the only thing that keeps them going.” “Fine then. Your turn”. Yuma Card Count: 2, SPC: 7 Ressen SPC: 0 “Due to the effect of Speed Spell “Power Baton” that I used last turn. I’m not allowed to draw a card. However, I can merely replace that by activating the effect of “Speed World 2”. By removing seven Speed Counters, I can draw an additional card. Yuma Card Count: 3, SPC: 0 “I Normal Summon “Dragunity Pilum”. In addition, since he was Normal Summoned, I can Special Summon another “Dragunity” monster from my hand. “Dragunity Brandistock” shall equip to “Dragunity Pilum”. I’m not done yet, though. By banishing my face-up “Dragunity Pilum” and “Dragunity Brandistock” equipped onto Pilum, I’m allowed to Special Summon “Dragunity Arma Leyvaten” from my Graveyard. Now, I’ll attack your “The Fabled Cerburrel” and win me this duel!” “I’ve stopped you once before, and this time it won’t be any different. I’m sorry to hear about the tragedy that has befallen on your two sisters, but dueling isn’t the only option. You said it yourself, “duelists like me only bring destruction wherever they go”. Moreover, if you continue on this path, it might just happen one of these days, which is why I’m activating my Trap Card, “Redirect Shot”."
Trap Card Once per turn, negate the attack of one of your opponent's monsters and inflict damage to your opponent equal to half of that monster's ATK. Then, you may Set this card back into it's original position instead of sending it to the Graveyard.
"Since you created one of your own cards, I’d be happy to show you one of my own. This Trap Card cancels out your attack, and then you are slammed with half of your monster’s ATK points, equaling 1300.” “What,” Yuma said, concern in her voice. “Fine, you put up a magnificent duel, Ressen Ikeda. I won’t forget what you said.” A blue shield formed around Ressen’s duel runner, effectively stopping the dragon’s onslaught. A ray of blue light materialized in front of Ressen and shot towards Yuma’s Duel Runner. It passed through her body, and Yuma’s face twisted in agony. Yuma LP: 0 The crowd went ballistic as Ressen circled around the track. “Whoa, this crowd is going nuts,” the MC stared ranting. “It’s just the kind of duel you would expect from today’s rising star. In addition, he barely scraped by with 200 Life Points. With that victory, Team Future Worlds is staking their mark and moving on to the Quarter-Final round!” Ressen drove around the track, still thinking about what happened when he was performing his Synchro Summon. Ressen felt his Duel Runner wobbling and shaking. This was strange. He had never felt this kind of pressure before. “Well, what are you waiting for?” Ressen’s face scanned the crowd. This is the prospect that he lived for. Yuma was probably right in the fact that all Turbo Duelists were the same, causing destruction wherever they went. Nevertheless, if that were true, that would defy the logic of his role model Duelist, Yusei Fudo. Both Ressen and Yusei were duelists that were completely congruent, in both their ideas and their playing strategy. Ressen pulled into the garage, with the conversation that he had with Yuma still ringing in his mind. “Listen to me. There are some shady characters that are Dueling this year, and it stems from that Team Shadow Lair. I don’t trust any of them. Our team wants to help you. There is someone pulling the strings on this year’s tournament. I just know it.” “And I suppose you want to take them down in the quarter-finals so you can take all the credit. Sorry, but that’s not going to happen. I’ll beat you and stop them myself if I have to. But I appreciate the “get-together” strategy that your Team is trying to employ. We have our team members to comfort us and give us hope. At least, that’s what I used to think. Now, I fight for myself.” “Isn’t it time that you started trying to save others. I’m not saying that you have to give yourself up, but…just watch your back. We’ll try to help you every way we can throughout this tournament.” “Team Shadow Lair…what was their purpose in the tournament,” Ressen thought to himself. /-/ Back inside, everyone congratulated Ressen on his fantastic Dueling Skills. “Sheesh, we thought you might have been a goner, Ressen, had it not been for that Trap Card you played,” Ayame said. Ressen did not acknowledge Ayame’s compliment, and instead was lost within his own little world, thinking about what Team Shadow Lair might want in the tournament. Ayame sighed, irritated. Ressen sat on the couch, staring into the television. “She really got me thinking,” Ressen said to himself, but he didn’t know that he was saying it out loud. “About what,” Ayame commented, taking a seat right next to Ressen. “The people that grow up in the Satellite…I suppose they never change.” Ressen brushed his hands into his hair. The MC’s ranting about the other teams seemed so indistinctive to Ressen now. It was all a blur within his mind. “Ressen, I’m gonna go work on the Duel Runners. Kaori is coming with me and Darian is already working on replacing the oil for mine,” Phoenix promptly said. “I’ll probably be back in in about an hour.” “Fine,” was the only thing that Ressen said, still absorbed on the television screen. Silence filled the room for a long time. It was just Ayame and Ressen now. “Ressen,” Ayame slowly said. “About, what I said before the Duel.” “That’s right. You had something to tell me,” Ressen quickly responded. Ayame looked down to the floor. Ressen’s face turned into one of confusion, perhaps even pity. “You…you never told me your story. Don’t forget the promise that we made,” Ayame said slowly. “So, without family, huh? Same with me. However, you’re going to have to break through my wall if you want to hear about my story.” “Fine, I suppose I could tell you. But this little thing stays with us,” Ressen said. Ayame sat next to Ressen, intent on hearing his story, and all that came with it.
Chapter 16 comes on Wednesday.
