You're forgetting animation. That's important too sometimes.

The action made dog days a solid anime but I don't think it was a great anime. I love action too. This may sound odd from me but maybe romance. I love D.N.Angel for the pairing in it. It's a bit older and maybe the animation and art style isn't my favorite but that anime makes it so high up on my list because of the romance. Episode 18 being my favorite episode of it. Well of course just that can't get to the top. Angel Beats if you ask me was able to get it all right. It has the animation, style, some of the best action, comedy, and romance. Everything matters but I think an anime can not be great if it doesn't have great romance.

Hey guize =3

I just finished Elfen Lied, and I do want to say that Lucy is now my favorite character. Nana isn't far behind in close second.

I find Lucy intriguing, in a similar dense to Hannibal Lecter.

However, characters with appeal are ones like Jack Atlas, Aporia, Gaara, Ulquiorra, etc.

There are more, but those four have a similar motif.

Oh, and Itachi is another big one.

The whole anti/hero thing?

Hey anti heroes are really cool. I mean Venom, he is evil and doesn't mind slaughtering people whenever he gets the urge.
but he isn't above saving someone when it is the right thing.

Plainly heroes are the sappy people who constantly go out of their way to help
Villains are the selfish ass holes that don't give a care about murder
Anti Heroes are a well balanced mix of the two.

Yes, yes they are . . .

They are also more interesting.
But you have to hand it to writers of heroes now. They're making them a lot more interesting and pushing what is "right" for them to do

Been a while since I've seen a hero like that. Maybe never. :/

Well actually I am referring to Justice League recently.
I personally cannot think of an anime character like that.

In Justice League they had the heroes magically lobotomize certain villains and even some HEROES into forgetting their past/someone else's past/into a vegetative state.

Now is it alright to do it to the villains, but what about the heroes?
The point is where do you draw the line . . .

Itachi doesn't. Mentioend him last on purpose.

Ulqui's "redemption" was more along the lines of humanization. Before he died, he found his heart, and became less cold.

Gaara... I should NOT have to explain this to you =_=

You might think that Gaara needs or wants redemption, but I don't think he does. :/

Itachi I think is the definition, or close to it, of redemption.
Itachi's the definition of Snape +1

... Gaara's already had his redemption ._.

He's Kazekage because he wants to protect what he once hated. The whole of Gaara's story is REDEMPTION.
