Fireflies - Owl CIty

The Sleeping Dude

I loved it!

And then the radio played it more. And I began to simply like it.

And then it was plain spammed. And now, I cannot stand it T_T

I like some of their other stuff, though, and being supported by Matt Thiessen is a plus.

This was Owl City's one hit wonder. He has other good stuff, but this song was the only one to make it BIG. The radio overplayed it however like everything else. Listening to it now, I find it even more appealing.

Hello Seattle was the their other wonder. They also hit it off with other big ones, like Alligator Sky, especially with CHristopher Brown, though the CD released didn't have him. TBH, in every album, there's always 1 or 2 bad songs, like Plant Life. But otherwise, the other songs aren't bad. They just didn't hit the level. I also crack up several times when listening, like, "And like an introvert, I drew my overshirt, and began to shiver violently" or "I'm scared to death I'll never be afraid." etc.

Think I'm the only person in this thread (thus far) that consciously dislikes Owl City. I find their songs to be poorly-directed and have superficial lyrics. A lot of their stuff is bland and stale, and the singer rarely gets chances to actually make an impact on someone listening (I don't mean lyrics-wise, I just mean pure singing quality). One of my least favorite bands of all-time, and Fireflies was probably the worst song to overplay on the radio. I didn't think I could hate a single song that much that wasn't from someone like Bieber or Cyrus or Gaga, but oh well.

I'm with Dark on this one.

I'm not one of those "hurr hurr mainstream sux durr" guys, I just don't like this song. It makes no sense but got the s*** played out of it. Last time I checked they didn't have any other songs that matter, so one hit wonders will be one hit wonders.

I'd like to disagree with the people who dislike Owl City for their lyrics being stale. Adam Young, lead singer of Owl City, is a bit cuckoo but he's creative. After quickly looking at his blog, he can write poems and related things really well.

Fireflies is unfortunately stale via overplaying on the radio, but they aren't a one-hit wonder. He has like 4 albums, with his latest few songs from his latest album being pretty popular actually.

Only thing about Owl City that I'd criticize is that the songs are 'recycled' into other songs he makes.

Would you like to cite any examples of their songs that don't have terribly stale lyrics? I've only listened to Fireflies and Vanilla Twilight, and maybe a few others since my friends try to push this music on me, and I've hated every single one. The lyrics didn't intrigue me at all, they didn't evoke any major emotions, and they just felt out-of-place in comparison to the decent instrumentals that Owl City can put out. So please give me a song that you think will change my mind about that.

In the city I live in, we have a really big pop station that everyone ends up listening to once in their lifetime. It's probably the radio station of my school, and I've only heard Fireflies ever played on it. So I don't care how popular you think the song is, but it sure as hell isn't mainstream if it's not playing on the most mainstream radio station I can find.

I like how the song is played like calm tone and not noisy-like tone or fast tempo.

I listen to Coldplay, I know about calm tones. And yet when I listen to Coldplay, the lyrics evoke emotions in me. The lyrics don't feel stupid and stale. Even Coldplay instrumentals do a lot to express emotions, but I feel all of those things lacking whenever I listen to Owl City. It, sadly to say, just sounds like another mainstream pop artist trying to make it big instead of caring about the quality of their music. And I'm not much of a mainstream-basher, usually.

I love Coldplay as well, and of course their lyrics evoke emotion.

There are a lot of songs that really are emotional that Owl City have done. Cave In, Meteor Shower, Galaxies.

It's a shame that they're not as recognized except via their two famous songs.
