Bill S.978

Recommended Posts

Hello.

There is a bill that has been introduced last week; Bill S.978, which states the following:
Makes unauthorized web streaming of copyrighted content a felony with a possible penalty of up to 5 years in prison. Illegal streaming of copyrighted content is defined in the bill as an offense that "consists of 10 or more public performances by electronic means, during any 180-day period, of 1 or more copyrighted works" and has a total economic value, either to the copyright holder or the infringer, of at least $2,500.
This bill would devastate not only the gaming community but the Internet as a whole entirely.

This has nothing to do with first amendment rights. The freedom of expression does not guarantee protection from theft, which is what streaming movies really is. Video games should be allowed to be streamed, since that's essentially advertising (I like watching gameplay of a game before buying it and there are quite a few games I wouldn't have if I didn't see gameplay of them), but streaming movies and TV shows probably should be brought to a minimum.

So, my idea -

Take gaming out of the bill. Streaming video games is helpful to the companies that create those games. Don't allow streaming of movies or TV shows until they have been put on a public media, and then only the stations it has been played on may air it, should they choose to do so, online.

i don't like this at all, because with this i expect alot of complaints alot of petitions sent out to change their minds, and alot of protests and if it passes, those people could be marked/targets for attacks

Where's that starwars quote...

"Fear Causes Anger...
Anger leads to hate...
Hate leads to suffering."

Yoda's right, you know. Am I the only one who thinks a relative Apocolypse would happen if this passes? Sounds stupid, right?

>Youtube/Forums/wikis get taken down
>People Protest
>Wars start
>People die

=Apocolypse.

Also note, that by passing this, wouldn't 75%+ of the human population be arrested? Sounds strange, but Birth:Death Ratios would be fucked up aswell. I hope to God that this doesn't pass, just because of all the side effects.

You my friend win.

IMO it really should be up to the copy right holder if they want to press charges since they own the work. Hell, I know Valve wants you to post videos of what you do with there games. You aren't given official permission but in every way they encourage it, so what happens if the bill pass? Also, I'm looking forward to seeing how this bill ends up working out in practice because I honestly don't see the government taking time to track down all the streamers.

I couldn't said it better myself. Even if they do do something, it will just prove that they have more free time than we do.

O, this also hit me. Should this bill pass it more or less kills youtube. Youtube is owned by google. Google fought back against China when they felt an unfair law was being made. As such should the bill pass google will fight america.

Google can and will win anything they want.

It doesn't matter what the video game developers want. The government can charge you, whether the developers like it or not.

I know, and I find that stupid. For TF2 to get some achievements you need to post videos on youtube. Capcom likes streams of there games and supports the community. It's stupid to take it out of the hands of the owners since they might not want the government to press charges and the fact that they can still press charges when they want you streaming their stuff is simply stupid.

It still hasn't passed the House. So the bill still has a LONG way to go, but the fact that it exists pisses many people off.

I don't understand the problem with people uploading video game footage. Movies - fair enough, but what do copyright companies fear? You're hardly going to get someone saying "Oh I won't buy this game because I can just watch videos of people playing it", and anyone with such a mindset would probably just resort to piracy eventually.

Governments want money.
They sue people.
They get money.

I found Blazblue on youtube, I've spent £30 on the series(BBCS and all 3 DLC characters) surely that's enough reason why this is fucking retarded. It won't pass, or it better not...because that pretty much shows how fucking retarded society is today.

If it's possible to sue the government, then the government is gonna get sued. The game companies will hate this, the citizens will hate this, and the internet will hate this.
For the companies, it generates money for people to stream/advertise their games.
For the citizens, it passes time damnit.
For the Internet, it's a good portion of what's on here.

They can go f*ck themselves for all I care, I'd still do it just to make a point.

Sadly, from what I have heard, the Obama Administration appears to support it.

Will this only apply to america? Because I'm in the UK. Why should we throw people in prison for posting Deck Profiles, card reviews etc. Makes me want to go walk up to them and FALCON PUNCH them for bring so fucking stupid
