Does Emissary of the Oasis' ability even protect itself?
Here's the official card description.

"While a face-up Level 3 or lower Normal Monster is on your side of the field, your opponent cannot select this card as an attack target. While this card is face-up on your side of the field, any Battle Damage to the controller of this card from battle involving a Level 3 or lower Normal Monster becomes 0."

It protects itself because as long as there is "a face-up Level 3 or lower Normal Monster is on your side of the field" you take no battle damage, so it basically uses your monsters as meat shields. I think you were just confused on the wording and how it says face-up normal monster and this card is probably an effect monster.

Well, thing is my brother was trying to say the second part of the effect "All Level 3 monsters or lower take no battle damage," also applied to the card itself. Pretty much making it invincible from being destroyed in battle.
