Video Game Plot Sharp Turn Discussion

So, You are playing a game. The plot seems to make sense, and THEN it doesn't. Final Fantasy IX is possibly the worst offender for this. The Plot suddenly takes a large 180 Degrees left Turn on itself right at the end of the game. Chrono Cross does the same. I mean, if you are going to incorperate a plot device, sharp turn or something else, do it gradually. I'm not talking about Plot turns, I'm talking about Sharp Plot turns. When it feels like you are suddenly playing a different game.

Tales of Symphonia at the Tower of Salvation.

Cruxis actually used the group by having the chosen unlock four seals just to be a vessal for Martel
The leader of Cruxis is the leader of the Desians, an organization of half-elves that torture humans
The badass member of your group betrays you and tells you he is one of the highest-ranking members of Cruxis
The Renegades, people who wanted to kill the chosen are actually the good guys.
Instead of regenerating the world, the group needs to find a way to save the chosen in another world

WTF????

I love completly unexpected plot twists

And most people hate spoilers.

Guys, if you're going to divulge the storyline of a game, please use spoiler tags. Some of you are doing this already, but I thought I'd drop the reminder.

The thread opener obviously didn't play Final Fantasy VIII :o

As with every plot device, if you use it right, it enhances the experience. The best example, in my opinion, is Portal 2.
When Wheatley suddenly turned totally mad, I fell from my chair.
The game is so well written that you'll always believe it made sense, that, in hindsight, a change like this had to happen. But only later, when you see what a fool you were. Another game that did this really well was the already mentioned Bioshock. Like in literature, how well you can convey a plot device like this depends mostly on the author.

Final Fantasy is famous for its confusing storylines, some of them more (VIII), some of them less (VII). But for me, that was kinda a part of the game I learned to expect and love. Also, I can't really see an all that sharp turn in IX... but that might be because I played this game about a bajillion times

Plot twists are just lazy, and nothing else. The creators of the game throw them in for shock value, which is probably one of the worst things a developer can do. That being said, I'd rather something have a plot twist then get to the point where it just doesn't make sense anymore. I can't think of a video game example off of the top of my head, but I can think of a TV one -
Trunks goes back in time to rescue Goku in order to save the androids. Why didn't he go back in time and just kill Dr. Gero?
Wait, I think I found a video game one too
After the game is over, you can hunt down the seven sages. Besides the leader, each seven sage essentially turns himself in once you find him. Why were they even included in the game? The game could have been just as good with one powerful sage instead of one slightly powerful sage and six weak ones.
Stuff like that, where you just go "Why is that even like that?"
