Shooters or Non-Shooters?

Recommended Posts

gaming is actually a more complex concept than you think

for me there are 3 kinds of shooters

slow paced, paced and fast paced

something like the medal of honor, resident evil, counter strike, halo ODST series is slow paced

paced has games like like halo 1-3, call of duty series, battle field, gears of war, resistance

fast pace consists of things like team fortress, halo reach, unreal tournament, gunz online, quake live

out of all of these catagories the casual gamer will play paced games or slow paced games

the competitive line will play the fast paced games

about im guessing 80% the people who play slow paced games enjoy other games compared to shooters

usually RPG's

but they are not exclusive to those 2

for me I'm a fighting game fanatic and and RTS player

unless a shooter is fast paced I feel like im not playing anything new.

slow paced and paced shooters are just, not serious and just for redundant fun, where I dont give A s*** If I die 100 times in a game but I care when some fagnut shouts through the live speak about how awesome they are for killing me 100 times >_>

I don't really like fast-paced shooters, but I don't really like slow-paced ones either (I'm guessing TF2 is paced, it's certainly not as fast as games like Warsow and Nexuiz). If it's too fast it gets very frustrating when you're new to the game as you can't really understand what you're doing wrong which makes it tricky to improve, but if it's too slow then a lot of the time it doesn't feel like winning is due to skill, more like being camping and being patient, getting a kill or two then getting bored.

I guess its cuz I'm more of a competitive gamer than a casual one, I think out of all genres I'm least competitive in RPG's and FPS's

RPG's because if you fail the first time it has great replay value

and FPS because I lose a lot competitively and I get hella angry, so I'd rather play casual where I don't get super pissed even If I lose a lot

unreal tournament 2004 is bullshit

i do not like shooters at all (example halo or time spliters)

all you do is move your guy around a shoot a gun (more or less)

i pefer strategy and rpg stuff

more stuff to do more option thoughthout the game

more of a storyline (some shooter the main character is some miltary guy following orders) (or a cop) the shooter game storyline usaully no not have any depth at all

rpg they programers make in depth characters storyline and allmost all rpg give you at least 50 hours of gameplay

most shooters there only 30 hours or less gameplay (even less if you are really good) any additional hours are spent doing multiplayer

so Shooters or Non-Shooters?

Homefront had a great campaign! It was really realistic. Whats Far Cry like? PM me

I heard Homefront's campaign was lackluster, but a lot of people disagree, the average ratings for made people like it more.

It's hard to describe Far Cry 2, since I never played it yet (it just sits there, waiting until my xbox gets fixed), you can just read a review or watch a gameplay video though

I prefer Shooters or stuff that involves violence because, just...because. I personally think anything else is for pussies.

I mostly disagree with this post, but neg repping is overdoing it. I miss the old days when people used to rep you as a person and not for a post

Can't tell if troll or stupid.

While I am a shooter guy myself, saying that everything else is for pussies is a ridiculous notion.

Try playing something that is not a shooter, and you'll see.

Next up: Call of Duty or "Any-other-game-that's-not-Call-of-Duty"?

Seriously, even though shooters became the majority of new games doesn't mean they're the only genre around... or the best, while we're at it. Usually, I'd go straight for the non-Shooter section... I mean, just look at how innovative they'll look in the upcoming years:

Looks friggin amazing, doesn't it?

(I'd also suggest you read the attached article, it's pretty interesting)

But, admittedly, there are good shooters around. For example, I finished Bioshock and Bioshock 2 recently, in preparation of the upcoming (and damn good looking) Bioshock Infinite. Imaginative weaponry, great atmosphere and character design, intriguing story and an interesting way of telling it. That's how the modern shooter should be... now look at Bioshock, then at the picture above... do you see the difference? <_<

I have to agree with the "Shooters usually have no plot" Or also Shooters attempt to have a plot and fail. Some examples of attempted plot are the majority of Call of Duty games. However that doesn't mean I don't enjoy playing them every now and then. I'm an all-around type of gamer. I enjoy FPS's as much as the next guy but I usually don't play competitively. However the most common and basic FPS's, which seem to be the most popular amongst Trolls and posers, like COD, Medal Of Honor, ect. don't have quite the draw to them as FPS's like Bioshock (which is one of my fav. modern games of all time) which has amazing plot, a good and stable time line, it HAS a time line, and its replay value for me is very high. Why can't more games be like this? Because so many people by the mind numbing plot-less and pointless FPS's and usually spend half the time online trolling. I admit this may not be all the cases but still. There are good FPS's out there, just all of the bad ones are essentially the same game. Think about it. The only differences are varying graphics, different guns, and different reaction times. Those are basic differences. There are some more but why does it matter?

*Yawn* Shooters Bad Gaming Genre made worse by no Originality or plot(In most cases) it's just "Shoot everything you can see and you'll be fine."

Same way how every Racing game is just driving a vehicle, Action is just slashing people, RTS is just pointing and clicking and hotkeys, and RPGs are just killing s*** for experience.

If you boil down any genre, they appear stupidly simple. There are variations to the above genres I listed, but there are also variations to FPSes too, you just don't want to find them since everyone here is busy bashing a genre which is being represented by boring s*** like COD.

Half Life, Portal, Bioshock (as you already said), Halo (or have you forgotten it over the years of multiplayer?), The Darkness, Dead Space, FEAR, Doom, COD4 (closest thing to a good story in the entire COD series, Metro 2033, Singularity, Far Cry 2.

Saying there are hotkeys in RTSes is like saying there is strafing in shooters. Oh, wait.

There is originality if you look at something besides COD as an FPS

There is strafing in shooters. I just said hotkeys so you won't be able to disprove what I said about RTSes, which you haven't.

It's hard to find originality these days because every developer that's made a shooter since 2007 insists on ripping off CoD's multiplayer mechanics. I'd prefer it if shooters were straight forward like CoD2 or Counterstrike. Especially since competitive gaming nowadays is dominated by shooters.

But to the original post... Ever since I've gotten my grubby little hands on Dragon Age and Mass Effect, I've been occupied with singleplayer RPGs and some RTS games on PC. Although the story in ME2 is stale and uninspired, the dialogue and characters more than make up for it. It keeps you interested through great characters, amazing voice-acting, and strong gameplay. It's hard to find a shooter with a story that keeps me entertained long enough to play all the way through BECAUSE THEY ARE ALL ESSENTIALLY THE SAME. But you can't argue that CoD has an addictive multiplayer, same with Battlefield.

Same with Dragon Age...minus the dialogue...you know, with a mute main character and all.

Bioshock has quite an interesting story, have you tried that out yet?
