My criticism on Born This Way

So, this is quite an experimental album which I cannot categorize. We got a taste of just how experimental it was with Judas. When I first heard it, something strange happened: I disliked it, but immediately after the song was over, I realized it was good and had to listen it again. And that pretty much describes the album in general: not good for the first listen, but great for many listens afterwards. This isn't anything new and there's nothing wrong with it. In fact, I'm very used to that and I can really love albums like it if done right, with Electric Wizard's Dopethrone probably as the best example.

The problem is that not all of the songs are like this, and the ones that aren't, are quite the opposite: catchy songs for the greater audience. I'm talking about:

Marry the Night
Born This Way
Hair
You and I
The Edge of Glory

These songs just don't fit on the album and it's horrible to listen to a transition between different kinds of songs. Besides that, the songs listed above have in common that they are songs that rely purely on the choruses and have terrible lyricwriting.

Now let's take a look at this album's singles:
Born This Way
The Edge of Glory
Hair

Three out of those five. Coincidence? No, of course not. Lady Gaga wants to make money, and that is only done if her singles are catchy songs. Obviously, the singles won't promote the album if those songs aren't on the album, so the solution is to do exactly that. An otherwise consistent album is ruined by some moneymakers.

But if Lady Gaga was all about the money, why didn't she just fill an album with those catchy songs? I'm certain she did put her heart in the experimental songs, but still wanted to keep it mainstream. She wanted to introduce the people to that experimental music. But this is like insisting on someone unfortunate enough to never have tasted nougat yet to try it, by putting it in their soup: it just doesn't work. Since that is the album's essence, the album is in its roots something that doesn't work, and the cover art depicts it perfectly.

You expect good lyrics from Lady Gaga when they're written when she's high?

i think lady gaga is creative as always and came out with a record that is VERY different than what is out there and she continues to stay outside of the box with each new album she puts out. I of course love the message of the album and the lady gaga movement.. not as like a super fan and i always listen to all her songs but i am a fan of her and i enjoy a fresh female artist that likes to do more than just the normal pop/R&B/dance but instead take music to a place i dont believe we have seen before.
