Alphanumeric Regex for Display Names

Recommended Posts

The administrators know what this is, what it does, and how to enable it.

It would mean that the most annoying possible name would probably be like OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO rather than the ridiculous ruby-character long form names people are using now. I know you all like to be creative, but it hurts SEO and also my eyes and makes you look pretentious.

Please, save the sanity. People used to use symbols and those were fine for a while, but it's a tad out of control now. I feel as though this is a reasonable, calm, polite request.

Sorry, no support.

The search engine is broken to begin with, and I feel people have the right to choose whichever username they want from the available options. If the feature already exists, I see no immediate need to remove it, and I'm pretty sure those who adhered to the fad wouldn't be to keen on the decision without a legitimate reason. Let people be what you consider "pretentious" through their username, it's the least harmful form of pretentiousness.

At any rate, if this suggestion is met with overwhelming support, I'll have to learn how to change it. If your forum also uses IPBoard, please give a quick rundown. Of course, if any other mod already has it covered, please say so.

I still take credit for YCMaker switching to IP.Board after suggesting it so many times in the past. ;)

Setting is called Characters allowed in usernames, and the setting to set it to is a-zA-Z0-9. This works with regex (regular expression) to my knowledge, so if there needs to be a compromise allowing certain symbols, so be it.

Regex help:

Regular-Expressions

Examples of the names that bother me:

http://forum.yugiohcardmaker.net/user/207626-%ef%bd%94%ef%bd%88%ef%bd%85-%ef%bd%82%ef%bd%8c%ef%bd%81%ef%bd%9a%ef%bd%89%ef%bd%8e%ef%bd%87-%ef%bd%8d%ef%bd%81%ef%bd%92%ef%bd%93/

Which, when typed out:

http://forum.yugiohcardmaker.net/user/207626-%ef%bd%94%ef%bd%88%ef%bd%85-%ef%bd%82%ef%bd%8c%ef%bd%81%ef%bd%9a%ef%bd%89%ef%bd%8e%ef%bd%87-%ef%bd%8d%ef%bd%81%ef%bd%92%ef%bd%93/

While the in-site search engine may not be working for some reason, you can still get page hits on google and having malformed names and things that are hard to search for drives "relevancy" down. Search site:forum.yugiohcardmaker.net with anything after it and watch what happens.

Why Me? WWWHHHYYYYY?

Also, No support. We should be allowed to change the font in our names, anyways.

It's not a font, it's a character structure unsupported by some browsers. There are likely security flaws that can be exploited by not restricting this, but I wouldn't be able to quote them.

I also support the removal of "special" characters in names, although this would make me a bit hypocritical due to my name. It does mess with the search engine's relevancy from what I know, and some browsers don't support the structure. For ease of use, I think we should stick to regular names. It just feels better...

ITT: The look of your name actually matters

So say you, in your above post. It's not about the look here, it's about the structure and the fact that:

A) It's long as hell and annoying to read/etc.

B) It screws with searching for things by you or anyone else with similar names if people (or mods) want to find something, be it onsite or google search.

C) It makes you look like a ****face. Good to know that's the image you wish to portray.

D) It impersonates moderators due to the semibold typeface. You know that and I bet that's one reason you want to keep it.

It's not that long.

The search feature is broken.

C) It makes you look like a ****face. Good to know that's the image you wish to portray.

How exactly?

D) It impersonates moderators due to the semibold typeface. You know that and I bet that's one reason you want to keep it.

What?

Why, yes it is long, it extends past the profile barrier. That's at least 340 pixels.

Because you're too uppity to use a normal name like the rest of us, to the point where you're arguing against having to change it? Would it kill you to have "The blazing MARS" instead?

Your name's typeface is semibold at parts. When I came back on, the first time I saw it I thought there were new moderators and almost immediately left.

No support here.

Firstly, it's so hard to implement. Mainly because, that all members with things in their name would be forced to change. That would take ages and would be a waste of time.

Secondly, the username of things like The blazing MARS is a trend going on in TCG. It'll be gone later about nearly 15 members here in TCG alone.

I personally think that symbols are fine and ruby characters are fine.

Maybe YCM should just have a username size limit. Well, yes, it won't help with the Roman letters like in Mars' name but it should do some good anyway.

I'll change again(My Last name change) Once I can in 3 Months. I like this name, though.

I'm going to agree with Warheit here. It's silly to use such characters. And there is a very very specific, but extremely common reason. Many browsers still have yet to register such characters. So to many users you may appear as "[][][] [][][][][][][] [][][][]" due to an inability to read the characters. Same with the Font-face, not all computers would have said font or language pack. That would produce the same error.

So how is that a good idea at all? And Blazing Mars, I would be happy to change it manually for you.

Some people may add characters in their name because someone else has the same name excluding characters. I myself have the Diamonds in my name because it looks cool but also because there's someone on YCM with the name "renji".

I don't support, because even though people have characters in their name that are seen as something like this: [][][] [][][][][][][] [][][][] on some computers, people should feel free to adjust their name to their liking. Unless of course, if their name violates the rules(Ex: Mr. F***ingsworth).

But that hinders other users.

And @Mars: No it doesn't, it just makes you annoying.

Well, I wouldn't care less if you removed the symbols and stuff, the only thing I would like is to keep the length of the names.

My Name is 11 Characters long and not Annoying....I do admit to actually having second thoughts on it though, but I like it, yet don't, so I have time to decide before I get a Name Change whether I like it or not.

So I support, but as long as the character limit is 15 or less but above 3 so you can actually find people.

My original name was XyZ but people kept spelling it wrong.....its just 3 simple letters.....

Please note: Outside of Marble, the only non-supporters are all people with obnoxiously retarded names.

You'll have to find other ways to overcompensate, ladies and gentlemen. There's no need to wave your annoying symbols in my face. I can ignore your signature in 3.2, but not your name.

Google Chrome is tapping his foot...

NO SUPPORT. Why? If people want to look spiffy, they can look spiffy! if it does make us look like assfaces, explain HOW. Say if my username was "SAINT GOD - ORISIS" in the Roman Lettering font, I would have copied it straight from the YGO wiki, witch I believe almost ANYBODY can view correctly. IT DOES NOT MATTER. You're just complaining at silly little things.

I'd just like to say, it's gotten a little out of hand.

It started when myself, and 2 other members changed our names to the Egyptian God cards just for a joke (Byakk and I had been Aesir's previously)

Then some others decided to change their names to the planets to be douchebags and it's escalated from there. I can't help but feel somewhat responsible.

But I would like to add, I'm pretty sure most computers, if not all, would be able to read this font.
