Here's the thing about Vortex. First, you need the cards that make the deck run and the staples. Then you put semi-staples. I usually don't get to the point where I have space for semis. If you're running Vortex you're probably missing out on something better you should have.

Trap Dustshoot is GREAT when drawn in the very beginning, it really screws up the opponent.

 

But lighting vortex is useful in more than just the beginning, and is only a dead draw when you don't have cards in your hand.

 

And if you play Gusto, you can stall for a turn to draw another card.
