Episode 27: The Fire Inside Part 2

Rayori found it somewhat challenging to keep the sand from his eyes, while keeping them open at the same time to prevent himself from falling asleep. He hadn't walked very far at all – there was something inside him driving him to go back and try to understand more of what had been happening, but he didn't want to risk causing some kind of issue in his condition; there was no way to defend himself.

Orii as a person didn't come across as the type of person who would harm him intentionally for no reason, but he was the leader of that village and had made that much extremely clear. For now, he was going to try and get a little bit of rest. Or at least, that had been his goal. The fear of that all-too-real nightmare coming back prevented him from falling asleep, no matter how much he wanted to shut his eyes and sleep the pain away.

What was making this so confusing was the fact that Riley was gone; nowhere to be found. For a brief second in their conversation, Rayori saw a shift in Orii's eyes, something that hinted there was more to the story than he was revealing. He wanted to get that information out of him, though he knew it was extremely unlikely. What had happened to the Soul Key around his neck, as well? There was an empty string where the key had once hung, but now it was more like a budget necklace than anything else. He grabbed it and tore it off in frustration, tossing it into the sand next to him, where it was whisked away by a gust of wind.

He felt around inside his pocket, realizing that all of his Decks were still there and intact. The duel disk was as well, clipped on the inside of the right half. It was obvious that Orii had no intention of messing with him. It could've been some kind of elaborate plan, but given the situation of this world as a whole, that didn't make much sense at all. How humans had gotten here he wasn't really sure, and as the Guardian of this Realm one would think he'd have been clued in, but the Celestials hadn't contacted him in as long as he could remember. The thought that they were furious about their refusal to travel to the Divine Temple crossed his mind. Maybe this was the punishment for defying their orders, and putting the world at further risk? Still, that wouldn't explain Riley's disappearance.

The more time they had spent here, the more obvious it had become that Riley was feeling immense sorrow and regret for the fact that others' lives had to be taken in order to preserve his own, something that had to be done to prepare him for the final battle against the Dark Wanderer and his forces, but there were a lot of missing pieces in this never-ending puzzle that needed solving. When he had taken the position as Guardian of this World, of course giving up a piece of his own humanity to allow the ability to travel between both worlds, he had known it would be a difficult endeavor. One that would come with many positives, but far more negatives. With the power that could be grasped in this world, there would never truly be a time to rest. But something was missing; he should have been able to identify and sense the presence of other humans here.

Not only that, but he should have been able to locate the Blade of Cylix, his own weapon and realistically his only method of defense in this world. He could fight, but for what? Punches and kicks weren't going to take down a hungry fiend in this world, no matter how much courage you could display. Whether it was intentional or not, he was being kept out of the loop. He had seemingly lost all ability to keep up with the current status of the world, and found himself a Guardian without the ability to guard at all. It was he who needed the guarding now. But it couldn't, and shouldn't for that matter, be like that.

But what was there to do?

- - -

He could see the outskirts of the village from where he was seated, despite the unforgiving whips of wind and sand slapping his face every few seconds; it was immensely sharp pain, so much so that a few cuts here and there wouldn't have surprised him at all. That nightmare continued to rest just on the cusp of his mind, and it took every bit of mental strength to force it away from him, to continue believing that it was just that, a nightmare, and that it wasn't a memory of something that had happened just recently. It was impossible to tell how much time had passed since the duel with Tessiaire, and what had realistically happened there.

Whoosh

Rayori's ears perked up. What was that? He had heard something in the distance, not too far off from the village. He squinted to try and see if there was anyone – or anything – nearby, but he couldn't see far enough to tell. The thought of sitting on his ass while others continued to fight this battle sickened him, even though that actual battle hadn't really started yet. The mystery of it all became way too much to handle sometimes. But he wasn't just a person anymore. He was a defender. Why couldn't he fight? Why wasn't he good enough? How had he allowed himself to get into this situation in the first place?

- - -

“Captain, we are approaching, and making record time, for that matter,” came the disgruntled voice of a minion from within the army of fiends. They were making their way across the desert to carry out a “mission”.

“Good, good,” came the reply, from a figure who could not be seen, but whose voice undoubtedly carried with it a sense of power. How long I have waited for this moment. The battle is finally going to begin. It feels like it's been years, just sitting and waiting, but now, now is when what has been predicted will truly come to pass. These fools have no idea the history they are about to experience!

And with that, they carried forward.

- - -

There was a moment of dead silence for a moment – even the winds quieted – as Rayori noticed the wooden shack just a few feet from his own location. It literally appeared from out of nowhere, as though it were a mirage he had been led to believe was truly there with the fatigue that had befallen him. That can't be real, can it?

He forced himself to his feet, placing his hands on the rock behind him for a bit of balance, and began to make his way towards the shack which looked most promising, though part of him knew he must have been going crazy at that point. Standing on the doorstep in front, he tried to peer in the window, but couldn't see anything out of the ordinary, which in reality, only made it more unordinary that it already had been. Figuring there was no point in not doing so, he knocked on the door.

- - -

Nothing but complete, evil darkness surrounded the castle structure, as everyone inside was frantically awaiting the status of the attack. They knew what would come once it had been completed; it would benefit them all.

“Good...I can sense that things are finally coming to fruition. All of the waiting can finally cease as we declare battle! The few remaining who oppose me will be crushed beneath my might, and I will drive this world into eternal darkness!” The Wanderer's voice echoed throughout the empty room in which he sat atop his throne.

- - -

With a single knock, the door burst open, and Rayori found himself consumed by an endless amount of light, which would have probably blinded him if he hadn't put up his forearm to shield his eyes from the overwhelming illumination. He was pulled in against his will, letting go of all resistance for the moment – waiting to see where it took him.

When he opened his eyes once more, he was in space. No, literally. Or at least, it looked like space. Floating in a dark space, lit by cosmos on all sides, stars of all different colors – it was unlike anything he'd ever seen before; it was incredible. For that moment, at least, all of the pain was gone, and he felt like himself again.

“Sure has been a while, hasn't it, old friend?”

The voice hit him like a rocket. That voice...it couldn't be, could it? And sure enough, he turned around, finding himself face-to-face with the one person he never thought he'd see again. Cylix. In the flesh.

- - -

“Orii, quickly, outside!” Ashley called to the boy, who was seated calmly in a chair, lost in thought, perhaps pondering the future of this village and asking himself, realistically, how long they would be able to hold on before they were overtaken. It was his responsibility to keep these people safe, but there weren't many other fighters here. If he truly wanted to, the Dark Wanderer could overtake this village with ease. For some reason or another, most likely lack of concern, he hadn't. They weren't much of a threat at all, but eventually, he'd have to get rid of them. Preparing for that time would be more challenging than anything he'd personally faced up to this point.

“What is it?” He asked, no time to respond as Ashley grabbed his arm and pulled him from his seat, rushing towards the door where the townspeople were in a panic, people running about everywhere, yelling. “What's going on out here?!”

“The Wanderer's army,” came a voice, from a rather large man with a heavy scottish accent in the midst of the crowd. “They've been spotted on the outskirts of the village, and they're headed here as we speak!”

It looked as though actually hearing the words explained only riled the people up more, as women hurried to grab their children and try to escort them to safety, while the men were searching around for something they could use as a weapon, any means of protection to keep the families safe. Could it be? Is this how it's going to happen? With no preparation at all, too! He's already decided to call for an attack. Orii clenched his fists. It was foolish of him to expect otherwise; so much time spent worrying about what might happen, and no time spent actually preparing a method of defense.

“We have to calm them down,” Ashley said. “Otherwise we're not going to stand any chance at all!”

“Right,” he nodded. Though he wasn't sure they could stand a chance either way. “How do you know they're coming? Are they that close we could spot them from the village rooftops?”

“No, not quite that close, yet,” she replied. “A couple of the villagers went out for some water about ten miles or so out, and spotted a large army being led by a much larger creature warrior on horseback, making their way through the mountains and there's only so much time until they arrive. We have to do something.” She swallowed, purely out of fear.

Orii couldn't help but feel frustration – even slight regret. Perhaps he should've waited to send Rayori away; or maybe it was his fault, from the get-go. The Wanderer might have known of his appearance there and decided then was the time to strike, before a larger gathering of humans could be assembled, putting up more of a fight. Either way, Rayori had seemed like more of a fighter than most of these people, and that would've helped him now for sure. They didn't have the ability to call on Duel Spirits, either. Very few humans did, though he knew Riley Storm was one of them.

However, with what he'd heard about Riley, things weren't looking positive. Rayori was searching for him, which meant he had a connection with him as well. So many unanswered questions, but now wasn't the time. The only way they'd survive now would be not to think, but to fight.

It was only a matter of time before he could actually see the army on the horizon line. Fiends, soldiers, even some beasts, all stood in line, under the command of a warrior, extremely muscular in frame, wielding a sword, indented on both sides, and a shield that matched the armor of the unusually large horse on which he was riding.

For brief moment, the two locked eyes, and Orii got a glimpse into a soul far colder than his own. The knight pointed his sword outwards, followed by a unanimous roar, as the army charged into battle.

This wouldn't be a fight – it would be an onslaught.

To be continued...

The story's really kicking into high gear now, as we head down the stretch to bring an end to this Season, with 18 episodes left to go. I've built up a mass plethora of unanswered questions, and as this battle draws its conclusion, we'll finally start to get those answers at a fast pace.

Responses!

Let's see, I commented on this a while ago...I might actually have reviewed it...but now it's really come along. The world you've built is really very strong.

Once you've finished, though, you should probably go back through and tidy things up.
Ah, I remember that.

Well, I've tried to, in a way, create a world that can span the stories (the four seasons) without seeming dated, and while always having something new to introduce if need-be.

That's probably something I'll do eventually, but right now my concern is to keep producing quality episodes and finish this Season up. And with that, here's Episode 28; 21 more to go.
Episode 28: The Hero's Rescue

Orii was scared. Not for himself, but for the villagers. Staring into the eyes of the knight leading that army sent a fear through him that he hadn't felt in the longest time. He knew, standing in place, overcome with panic, that he couldn't just stand there wasting time. He had to act, and fast.

"Grund!" He called out to the Scottish man who had spoken just moments earlier. "Quickly, get all of the young ones together and get to the underground area!" He turned to Ashley, who stood to the right of him. "Ashley, you try and get as many of the older, non-fighters to the same place, and hurry, there's not much time!"

Grund nodded, and Ashley did the same, both of them showing a smile of reassurance, as they called out for their respective groups and hurried them towards safety. The army continued to charge forward, showing no hesitation, so many of them vile, ruthless fiends who cared for nothing other than obliterating that which was in front of them.

Luckily, he wasn't the only fighter in the village. There were more than a handful of men who could take down – more than likely – any human being who got in their way. The problem was, they weren't fighting humans. Not unless you consider seven foot tall, three-hundred pound creatures with swords and fists the size of car tires to be humans. There wasn't much he even needed to say. People were afraid, many of them in a panic, but afraid or not, when you're about to be crushed, you're going to react.

And that's exactly what the villagers did. The men reached around for swords – many households had one for the sake of keeping the family safe – and rushed into battle. They weren't careless, though, as many of them managed to get a shot or two in before ducking out of the way, slowing down the charge, if only a little. . It appeared as though the tactic would work. If a minion took a hit, he was simply trampled by the ones behind him, which made it so the enemies were actually weakening themseleves.

It didn't take long for the leader to catch on, and he quickly ordered movement to case. For a moment, there was pure silence as the army came to a halt. All from one hand movement. Incredible. The knight clicked the reigns of his steed and the horse walked forward, soldiers on both sides making a path for their leader to take his place at the lead.

In Orii's back pocket was a pair of nunchucks, complete with leather handles on both ends connected by a chain in the middle. It was his signature weapon, and one he'd learned to wield in every way. Far from the normal battle tactic around here, but he didn't care. He could outperform nearly any opponent with it. As the knight marched towards the front of the army, Orii placed his hand on one of the handles discreetly - he was ready to fight.

There was a standstill, as both sides waited for the other to make a move. Orii had been joined by about twenty men, ten on each side. They had bought enough time to allow the others to get to safety – for now.

"My, how rich of a moment this truly is." The knight spoke in a deep, dark voice to fully suit his dark apperance. If the look didn't strike fear in you, the combination of an intimidating voice and a monstrous sword was sure to do it. "Allow me to introduce myself."

No one budged. A few guys looked to Orii for orders, but he returned no look, simply standing still. They were ready to go into battle and defend the people of this village just as he was, but there was no point in sending them to do so.

"You may call me Calaeon," he said. "I am of the highest ranking under the might of his highness, the Dark Wanderer. I find no need to hide such information from you, given that this village has no more than a few minutes left before it crumbles to the ground."

Again, the men looked for orders, and again Orii had no response.

"For too long your presence here has been ignored, and that will no longer be the case," Calaeon laughed. A dark, remorseless laugh that showed how much he was looking forward to the events that were about to ensue. "I suppose the reasoning was the fact that none of you pose a true threat to our powerful army. However, though it looks bleak, there is hope for you yet. You see, the Wanderer is a merciful ruler. He's willing to let all of you remain alive, you, your wives, your children, and even return you to your own world, in exchange for one small sacrifice."

There was rumbling amongst the humans. Orii remained silent. He knew what was coming next, and he know how it would end. It would be a worthwhile sacrifice. After all, what else was left?

"You are all – in a sense – free to go." Calaeon had their attention now, as he knew he would. "In exchange, you must hand over the one known as Orii Shotaku. He," the knight pointed his finger in Orii's direction. "That one there."

The men gasped, many of them shocked and unwilling to give up the one who had fought to keep this village safe for them. While Orii wasn't exactly everyone's best friend, it was well-known that he would do anything for these people.

They wanted him, and only him. It made sense and he had seen it coming. He had what you might call an "unpaid debt" to the Wanderer – one he preferred not to talk about. Coming to this village was his way of moving away from that, of changing his life for the better. To think it wouldn't catch up with him eventually would have been naive.

"O-Orii?" One of the men to his side asked, rhetorically. He could tell from the look in the man's eye, and that of the others as well, that there was a confliction among them. On the one hand, by allowing the army to take Orii away, they could keep their families safe. One person to keep their families alive was a small price to pay. But at the same time, this was the one person who had taken a stand and fought for them and helped them to survive.

"He is not who you believe him to be," Calaeon grinned. "We have some unfinished business to attend to, and it would be much more beneficial to all of you to simply step back, grab your families, and prepare to evacuate. Leave this one to us. After all, is the life of one punk worth losing your wives? And your children?" He was trying to get inside their heads, and it was working. More importantly, Orii found himself agreeing with the knight's words. Perhaps it was the best option to allow himself to be taken and keep the people safe. And he would do it without a second thought, if only he thought these people would truly be saved. They were walking right into a trap regardless – there was no way they'd actually be allowed to return to the human world.

Were they contemplating it? He couldn't blame them, regardless. There was a tense standstill, almost awkward, as both sides awaited words from the other. After all, the next words would decide the fate of the entire village, Orii supposed.
- - -

"Sister, how long until they come, do you think?"

"Hm? Oh," Crystal shifted her glance to the spirit hovering alongside her. She had been deep in thought, and was quite peaceful until the interruption, actually. "I'm really not sure, at this point. I hadn't expected what happened to happen; it's, for lack of a better term, really put a twist on things."

"The Soul Key, it's still difficult to believe that was a failure," the spirit replied. "But I guess that just happens sometimes. It shows even the most perfect of duelists can make mistakes."

Crystal rolled her eyes at the comment. A mistake? No, it wasn't that. It couldn't have been, because with this new sense of power she'd acquired, making mistakes was out of the realm of possibility. The interference was caused by an outside force, one not within the Wanderer's domain. She hadn't spoken with the Wanderer himself in a few days, but there was a mutual understanding between the two that they had more than one enemy to keep an eye on.

Still, she couldn't believe what had happened, and it saddened her to think that she might miss out on what she had been waiting for this entire time.

- - -

"What should we do?" The men continued to speak amongst themselves, appropriately excluding Orii from the conversation; he knew this was a decision they had to make for themselves, and one he'd just go along with. Eventually, this time would come, but he had made his vow to protect the village no matter what the cost, and if his own life was that cost, then so be it. These people had no way of defending themselves against an army of Duel Spirits, and the enemy knew that.

"I mean, they don't look like they're kidding around, we could be in real danger here."
"I agree. It seems like it's for the best, but Orii? He's the one protecting our village, leading us, how could we just betray him like that?"
"You tell me, what other option do we have?!"

As if there was any sort of question regarding their decision and what it might be. Calaeon grinned. This was truly an effortless task, and one I'll take much pride in carrying out. It's time for that little punk to get what he deserves for betraying us. "Well, what is it?"

One of the men, Tyson, his name, had decided to speak. "Sir, we're grateful for the mercy you have shown for our families." He stopped for a moment and glanced at Orii, who showed no sign of emotion, as he had trained himself to do rather well. "Though it is against our own morality, we will agree to your terms, and there will be no resistance on our behalf."

Tyson looked at Orii as if to say, 'I'm sorry'. Orii responded with a friendly smile – a rare occurence at that.

"So it shall be!" Calaeon ordered for his team to move forward, followed by a burst of laughter. "Seize him, and prepare the others to leave the village!" It took no more than that for the army of fiends to advance, doing so carelessly, despite the agreement – they didn't care if damage was inflicted upon the village at all.

Orii simply stood his ground as the others watched on. There was no resistance on Orii's part as the army neared him, and the fiends reached out to seize him, as ordered.

- - -

"Fire away, Blaze Hurricane!" An enormous stream of flames shot down, encircling the barbarian creatures, from virtually out of nowhere. Calaeon had no time to react as the flames grew stronger, spiraling upwards until they had formed a twister-like existence, encasing the fiends in flames.
That's why he hadn't seen the giant dragon hovering overhead, comprised of bits and pieces of used metal, the winged creature continued to emit flames from within the confines of its mouth, showing no relent. Somehow, despite the impact, they were able to avoid Orii completely, hitting only the desired target, unlike normal flames, which tend spread rapidly and show no mercy for anything in their way.

What the hell is going on? Orii felt a hand on his shoulder, and turned quickly, he saw the one person he'd least expected to see.

"Hey there, the name's Rayori," the voice said, a confidence in his voice. "You might not remember me in all this craziness, but you, you know, kicked me out of your village not too long ago."

Orii stared down towards the ground, feeling shame, and a little bit of guilt. He absolutely hated having to rely on others, but in Rayori's condition, he'd come back to help defend the village. And that power, the ability to call upon a creature and bring it to life outside of a duel? It was unlike anything he'd ever seen. He wanted to apologize, but it wasn't in his mindset to accept help – or acknowledge that he might, in fact, need it.

"Let's save the apologies for later, eh?" Rayori turned his glance from Orii to the mounted horseman, who had an air of familiarity about him. "Do you feel perhaps any less confident now?"

"Hm, from a fool like you?" Calaeon grinned, and turned to one of his minions, who let out a laugh, whether it was fake or not, to appease his ruler. "Allow me to introduce myself, my name is -"

"Thanks, but I've already been filled in on all the details by a...close personal friend. I regret to inform you that your crusade ends here, right outside the village borders. Either that, or you're going to have to battle with me."

"I told you I didn't need your help," Orii said, trying to maintain a shred of courage, which Rayori paid no attention to. "The...these people, they are my responsibility. It's my fault we're stuck in this situation! I need to be the one to...to save them."

Calaeon had recognized Rayori first-hand, as the Wanderer had warned of his presence. The Guardian of the Spirit World, but a weak, laughable one at that. And his presence here, with the ability to call upon such a powerful creature, was certainly not what he expected. No matter; it would end just the same, with the annihilation of this entire village, and all the people within it. "You don't know what you're dealing with, boy. Orii is not who you perceive him to be. I feel as though if you knew the kind of person he truly was, you would have no interest in fighting this battle, and giving up your own life for someone of such character."

The darkened, almost depressed sunlight began to diminish as the sun began to settle, darkening the area around them. Rayori stared at the ground for a moment, listening to the words as they were spoken, and taking in each and every one before returning to meet Calaeon's eyes. "That's where you're wrong. I know of the past and I know of the present, exactly what has happened to lead to this very point. I've got some reliable sources, and as far as I'm concerned, what Orii's done in the past has no correlation to what he's trying to do right here, right now. He may have committed wrongs in the past but he's trying to fix them now, and I can commend him for that. Is he stubborn as hell? Sure, but we all have our moments. I suppose I might be having one now, actually. But I realized something."

"Oh, and what is that?" The knight asked.

"I'm not here to make friends and appease everyone. That's not what this job entails." Calaeon noticed something in Rayori's eyes – more than just intensity, it was as though there was a fire burning inside him, a bright blue flame, of resistance, of courage. It sent a shock right through him. "I chose to be the Guardian of the Spirit World to keep it safe from people like you, and if those I'm defending don't like my way of doing it, unfortunately I can't be asked to jeopardize their safety just to put a smile on their faces. So whether these people like it or not, I'm going to fight this battle, and I'm going to end you. First you, and then soon enough, the Wanderer himself! Because there's still hope! He is still alive, and as long as I know that, I can have the confidence to continue fighting this war! Now, let's do this!"

"Boy, if you wish for a duel with me, I'm sorry to say your fate will not be what you have intended, but I will oblige!" Staring down the might of the dragon Rayori had called forth, Calaeon questioned the logic of entering battle, as opposed to a duel, which might allow him to get the job done far more easily. If he could remove Rayori from the equation, the army could simply unleash upon the village with no opposition. It would take a little longer than he had planned, but it would be worthwhile.

It's time to duel!

Just read Chapters 14 and 15 (I know, I know).

Orii Tyrao duel was good ending actually, I was expecting Orii to throw it obviously and let Tyrao know, rather than feign losing if you know what I mean? But yeah, pretty good.

Ace you blithering idiot, why did you trust him?!

Nice concept for that duel though, really enjoying it.

I WILL get back upto speed with this. I know I've said that before, but I will.

Hey, I appreciate that you're reading it at all, bro. I gotta catch up with 24 before you get too far into that, now that you mention it.

It's so weird because where you're at compared to where I'm at now seems so long ago because of that hiatus I took.

Pretty close to finishing this, actually, so I'm looking forward to that so I can begin the final season and actually complete the story.

This is true. And awesome, looking forward to it.
Episode 29: Reality Check

"This duel will take place without interruption; this is to be understood, acknowledged, and not to be crossed." Calaeon spoke to his squadron, as the disgusting mass of creatures acknowledged their leader's questionable, but clear orders. "For no reason and under no circumstance will any of you move unless otherwise directed. Failure to comply with these orders will end with the might of my sword. Is that understood?"

The reply came immediately – the soldiers knew better than to go against what they were told, though many of them did wonder whether or not Calaeon himself was prepared for this unexpected challenge. Unlike their leader, none of these spirits recognized who the opponent was. Despite Rayori's status being somewhat well-known around the Spirit World as a whole, the army of darkness was kept mostly in the dark (no pun intended) on such topics, and were concerned with nothing but eating and destroying things. Calaeon knew the opportunity in front of him and planned to crush Rayori in a swift victory.

- - -

"What...what am I doing here? Cylix, is that really you?"

"Indeed it is, my friend. It's been quite a while, hasn't it? I almost didn't recognize you, what with how much older you look since last we met."

"I wish I could say the same about you, but since Celestials are immortal and all that, you look about the same."

Laughter, trapped within silence. "I'm still the ladies man I've always been, but I digress, onto the topic at hand. You've fallen off your game a bit lately, haven't you?"

Rayori appeared ashamed to admit it, acknowleding the Spirit's words with a slight nod. "I guess not doing things by the book proved to be more difficult a task than I could handle alone. And even worse, I don't remember anything that happened. But I'm guessing you already know that."

"Indeed I do, but there are somethings I regretfully cannot share with you at this time, for it would disrupt the purpose of me calling you here and risk destroying what might be our only chance at truly salvaging this world."

"But Riley, he, he's -"

"I'm well aware, and while I believe your fear is warranted, you might want to listen to what I have to say. After all, the Celestials are not the most patient of people, and though I've mostly disassociated myself from the group at this point, I've received word of what's been going on and I feel it might be the appropriate time to fill you in."

- - -

"Rayori, listen to me, this is my battle to fight," Orii said, barely able to stand, but still trying. "I...if it's the last thing I do, I have to defend these people!"

"I understand where you're coming from, Orii, but you're not fooling anyone." Rayori stepped forward, activating his Duel Disk which had been 'upgraded' since last he performed, but more on that later. "You're not in the right state of mind to handle this kind of a duel right now. You'll have your chance for redemption soon, I guarantee it. But if you want to save these people, I'm going to need you alive, and that's not realistically possible if you face him instead of me. Keeping this world safe is my responsibility, and I'm going to ensure it's done!"

"Brave words for such a coward, wouldn't you say?" Calaeon asked, activating his own duel disk as well before dismounting from the horse on which he rode. With the motion of his hand, the horse remained in place, breathing quietly. "I think I will truly enjoy this."

- - -

"If you can't answer any questions, I don't know how we're going to make any progress here. I need to know what's going on around here if I'm supposed to be able to make actions and decisions for myself and help save the humans and Duel Spirits alike!"

"I understand, and I hope that soon you will too, but please, allow me to explain. What I can tell you is that since the events that occurred that day, your duel with the Psychic Duelist, that is, it has been approximately twenty-one days."

Rayori couldn't believe it – it had been that long?

"The events of that duel are something I don't expect you to remember right now, but allow me to say that your will was most certainly tested, and your weapon, my own blade which I had passed down to you, was destroyed in the battle."

"That explains its disappearance, but how could that happen? I have no means to defend myself now, of course not to sound whiny, I'll go into battle with my hands and feet if I have to, but I don't see that doing much at all."

"In the fight, you displayed characteristics not of a Guardian, but of a coward. Your inability to do what needed to be done and put the safety of the worlds first caused destruction that otherwise would not have happened, but hope is not lost. You see, something I never had the chance to share with you is that the blade was never passed down to me. When it deemed me ready, it presented itself to me, and from there, we were one in the same. I had beyond mastered every technique, knew every way in which to defend myself. You had grown quite skilled yourself, but it was time for the weapon to dissolve, for it is not your weapon, your true celrion."

Why couldn't he remember anything? It made him increasingly frustrated as he struggled to figure it out. What had happened that caused him to act that way, act in a way so poorly that it caused the Blade of Cylix to be destroyed? Even with the fact that it would have happened eventually taken into consideration, he found it hard to forgive himself for putting others at risk, however he'd managed to do it. The unanswered questions sure sucked.

- - -

"I'll give you the honor of going first," the knight said. "After all, it should make it more fun when I crush you, advantage and all."

"You know, you're all the same – so cocky, so arrogant, as though you can't possibly make a mistake." Rayori brushed his hair to the side as a gust of wind struck him right in the face, almost painful in conjunction with the dry desert air. "But this time you're facing someone who has nothing to lose. I'm supposed to keep this world safe, but if I go about it in a methodical manner, nothing will ever come of it! It's a changing of the guard now, and I'm going to lead by example!"

"None of what you're saying makes sense." There was a tension between the two of them, and Orii could feel it, even from a distance. "But it's no matter. Come, let us get to the duel."

"Right, it's about time we get started!" Both duelists drew their starting hands, as Rayori glanced over his own to figure out how he'd start this one. "I'll begin with this, the Spell Card Shien's Dojo!"

Calaeon appeared to almost lose his footing as a large wooden structure rose up around them, an ancient stadium constructed at the hands of elite warriors. It surrounded them, so hollow in design that even the faintest of sounds echoed around them.

Continuous Spell Card
Each time a "Six Samurai" monster is Normal or Special Summoned, place 1 Bushido Counter on this card. You can send this card to the Graveyard to Special Summon 1 "Six Samurai" or "Shien" monster from your Deck with a Level equal to or less than the number of counters on this card.

He's playing this Deck? Orii had heard of this power, but only once before. The "Six Samurai" were an unrivaled class of warriors, so vast in skill they were able to adapt and evolve with any situation. But to think he'd be seeing the Deck in action? That put a new twist on things. Heh. Certainly an interesting choice. Perhaps if we both survive this, we can have a showdown someday.

"With that out of the way, the showdown can really begin! And I'll start that by Summoning to the field, Legendary Six Samurai – Kizan!" The warrior, clad in black armor and wielding a longsword stood tall within the confines of the dojo.

Level 4/EARTH
Warrior / Effect
If you control a "Six Samurai" monster other than "Legendary Six Samurai – Kizan", you can Special Summon this card from your hand. While you control two or more other face-up "Six Samurai" monsters, this card gains 300 ATK and DEF.
1800/500

As Kizan made contact with the floor, a wooden circle against the west wall became lit, a color similar to the yellow on Kizan's own armor. "And with Kizan, my Dojo gains one Bushido Counter. But those'll come in play later. For now, I'll toss another card face-down and end my turn."

Calaeon's army watched, interest piqued, to see their leader's opening move. It wasn't often they were able to see him duel, for it wasn't often his authority was challenged. "I take it you are finished, so now I shall begin. By revealing to you the monster Void Incarnate within my hand, I am allowed to banish it." He revealed the card, not really long enough for Rayori to get much of a look.

He got rid of his own monster? There's a catch. No way I'm falling for something as easy as that. Rayori awaited the next move.

"Now I activate the Void Force Spell Card!" Calaeon placed the card in his duel disk as a sphere, flourescent dark in color, encompassed the armored warrior on Rayori's field. "All I must do is banish a Void monster from my hand, like Void Caller, and in turn I'm allowed to banish a monster on your side of the field! So your Six Samurai is no more!"

Normal Spell Card
Banish 1 "Void" monster from your hand: Target 1 monster your opponent controls and banish it. During your next Standby Phase: You can add 1 of your banished "Void" monster(s) to your hand.

It was a setback, but not one he couldn't come back from. Kizan was an essential part of his strategy, with his face-down 'Six Strike – Thunder Blast', he would've been able to return any monster Calaeon brought out right back to the hand, allowing him the opportunity to strike directly on his next turn, but now, the trap was useless. However, the removal of Void Incarnate was still a problem – there was a reason he had done it, for sure.

"I'll end my turn with a face-down card," Calaeon concluded.

- - -

"This world, Rayori, is a strange place. And I'm sure it's even more so for you, as you were not here as part of some prophecy, but to help save someone and to help make a difference, you see. When you came to this world, it was of your own choosing, and to save Riley because you realized the choices in your own life were not what you wanted them to be. Am I wrong?"

Rayori couldn't quite figure out what the old man was implying, but he couldn't disagree with any of his points. "I value myself, I do, but my entire life has been about me, and it only got me so far. Someone like Riley, who believed so strongly in friendship and courage, and even bravery – it was unlike anything I'd ever seen. To just allow him to put himself at risk to save others, it's not fair! He doesn't deserve to have that burden placed upon him!"

"Interestingly enough, that makes you a hypocrite, now doesn't it? You're trying to save your friend from the same fate you are allowing to befall you. You have the drive to do it all yourself, to fight the battles for everyone else because throughout your life, others have done your fighting for you. You are the Guardian of this world and your own, yet that does not mean you have to fight alone."

"Doesn't that mean I have to protect humans and Duel Spirits alike? Innocent lives shouldn't have to be lost because I can't handle it! I'm strong, I know it! But now I've let everyone down, because I was careless. Riley's gone, this world is falling apart, and the one person people are supposed to be able to rely on is nothing more than a coward!" He could feel tears streaming down his face, but he refused to acknowledge them. Cylix made no mention of it, either.

"Of course not, and to think with such a mentality is foolish. You can fight to defend others without leaving others out. This war, and the one before it, was fought with a combination of everyone's strengths and weaknesses! Your own, the seven of you, you all fought and all contributed something to the battle that was necessary to defeat the evil! And that, that is why I have chosen to approach you now, my friend."

When he had dueled Zure, his own refusal to quit with the mentality that he had to fight to protect Riley – he had failed. Not only was he not strong enough to handle the fight on his own, but Riley stepped in and finished the job. However, upon the duel's conclusion, the two fought that creature of darkness together, and it was that alliance that let them defeat the enemy. He was starting to make sense of what Cylix was saying now. He had been so ignorant because of his position that while he thought he had to be responsible for everything on his own, it was just because of his level-headed nature that he could lead the attacks; it didn't mean he was the only one who could fight the battles.

"But if Riley...if Riley's gone, how is it possible to continue the fight? If he's no longer alive because of my own personal actions, how do I keep going, how do I find the drive to keep fighting when all it will do it lead to more destruction!"

"Boy, you are mistaken. Riley is not gone at all. You see, he was fighting with conflicting feelings similar to your own, and he needs to sort them out. There is not much time before the final battle is to begin, and if this world – and Earth – stands even the slightest chance of survival, you must work together and fight as one. Find Riley, ensure that he knows the two of you can fight as a unit, and that despite the difficulties you are now facing, hope is not lost. And of course there's Crystal, as well. That one might be a bit more difficult, but I have confidence in you all."

"And Orii? The village? I sense danger, as if something's not right there. Is there anything you can tell me, Cylix? Why he..." Rayori stopped himself. Was Orii's behavior any different than his own, just on a smaller scale? It made sense now.

"Orii is a unique individual in his own right." Cylix laughed. "However, his dedication to the people of that village is second to none. I know not how they got here, stuck admist this chaos in a world not designed for their survival, but he would lay his own life on the line for even one of those villagers, just like I know you would for anyone. What you speak is true, they are in grave danger. The Wanderer is taking care of some last minute nuisances before declaring his true attack, and that village just happens to be one of them. Orii is strong, but he cannot hold them off on his own. I fear for their safety."

"I'll go. I'll go and fight alongside them, despite his own claims that he doesn't need it, if you believe he needs the help as much as I do within my own heart, then I know I'm doing the right thing!"

"Are you sure that is a good idea? The Celestials request your presence at once; they are unhappy with how long it has been since you have reported there, and that you blatantly denied their request to take Riley there upon your arrival."

"Eh." Rayori smiled, and Cylix held back laughter, for he had not expected the boy to start listening to orders at this point. "Well thanks then, I'm off!"

Cylix just stood, admiring courage that quite realistically, didn't come around too often. And for just one moment, he could've sworn he saw himself in the boy's eyes. After all, in his youth, he'd done the same thing. And look where he was now.

This was an interesting group they had on their hands.

- - -

"I'm not sure what it is you've got planned, but I know for a fact that I'm not going to let it slow me down!" Rayori drew his next card, Legendary Six Samurai – Kageki, and added it to his hand. Time to put his learning to the test. "Working in alliance with one another, that's the speciality of this particular Deck, and it's something important, one you might want to pay some attention to!" He glanced at Orii, subtly, who showed no change in face.

"Now, from my hand I Normal Summon Legendary Six Samurai – Kageki!" From a burst of light emerged a warrior clad in bronze armor, wielding two swords, one in each hand. His appearance brought forth light to a second wooden circle within the dojo. "And when Kageki is brought to the field, I'm allowed to call upon another monster from my hand, so please welcome, Kagemusha of the Six Samurai!"

The noble warrior appeared alongside his mentor, ready for battle at a moment's notice, and illuminating a third wooden circle as he did so.

Level 3/WIND
Warrior / Effect
When this card is Normal Summoned, you can Special Summon 1 Level 4 or lower "Six Samurai" monster from your hand. If you control another "Six Samurai" monster, this card gains 1500 ATK.
200/2000

Warrior / Tuner
If (exactly) 1 "Six Samurai" monster you control would be targeted by the effect of a Spell, Trap, or Effect Monster card, you can change the target to this face-up card instead.
400/1800

"Now it's time to show you what this is all about!" Rayori shouted, as visible energy, red in color, representing the burning fire within his heart, surrounded him as well as the monsters on his field. "A strong alliance makes a strong warrior! I tune Kagemusha of the Six Samurai with Legendary Six Samurai – Kageki" to Synchro Summon Legendary Six Samurai – Shi En!"

Orii and the villagers watched with amazement as the two monsters became one, an elite warrior clad in metallic red armor and wielding a legendary longsword, and settled upon the field, again bringing forth the power of another circle within the dojo. So it's true...what a monster.

Level 5/DARK

Perhaps I underestimated this boy slightly, but it won't matter. I've prepared for such a situation with my Trap Card, and as soon as he attacks, he will meet a sad fate, just as this village will shortly after. Caleon maintained his composure, waiting for his moment to strike.

"Let's see you stop this! Shi En, attack his Life Points directly with Strike of the Sacred Sword!" With swift agility, the warrior took to the air and readied his weapon, headed straight for the knight which opposed him.

"Not so fast," Calaeon said. "Activate Trap Card, Void Grasp!"

Normal Trap Card
When your opponent declares an attack: Banish 1 Void monster from your hand and negate the attack. Then, destroy the attacking monster.

Rayori grinned, much to the knight's displeasure. "You dare laugh at me?!"

"I'm not sure why I wouldn't, to be honest," Rayori explained. "See, you've allowed me to activate Shi En's special ability! When a Spell or Trap is activated, I can choose to negate the activation and destroy it!"

What's this?! Calaeon tried to defend himself, but was unable as the swordsman struck him straight in the chest, sending him backwards somewhat ten or so feet at least. The entire army gasped in shock, prepared to step in and defend their leader, but then remembering his words to avoid doing so, no matter what.

LP:

Calaeon – 1500
Rayori – 4000

"He...he hit him for that much damage in one turn..." Orii was at a loss for words, trying to comprehend what he'd just seen. It was incredible, the confidence in which Rayori carried himself was so well reflected on his monsters, and vice-versa. A powerful duelist, no doubt.

No...no way he could have...seen that coming, not this early in the duel! It's impossible to think that he could have disrupted my strategy! Because Shi En negated the...effect...I was unable to banish another monster, meaning it's going to be a bit more difficult to pull off the next move! Calaeon tried to stand, noticing a huge gash in the middle of his chest where the sword had struck. While it was still a duel, everything was real here. The pain was legitimate, and it could kill you. His goal, however, was to inflict that much damage on his opponent, not take it himself. With a cut that big and no way to fight through it now, there was no guarantee he'd survive to see another day. But if he could at least destroy this pitiful village, and kill every last one of them, this would have been a success.

"Come on, stand up," Rayori said, not a hint of arrogance in his voice. He was ready to fight and win this battle, no matter what the cost to himself. Plus now, he had managed to buy enough time for Orii and the others to get to the underground, where the kids and the wives were being held for safety.
