Dark
So, hi. If you are here, you are probably interested in video game music, and if not, I suggest you either get interested or leave. The only reason this is being made is because it is hard to continuously destroy and remake the video game music station, and this should serve as a place for intelligent discussion about video game music. I'm going to keep this really open and liberal, and I won't even bother include a "form" or a "members list" as they seem extremely extraneous for such a club. As long as your posts are on-topic and about video game music, you can go ahead and post whatever you want. That being said, let me introduce you to the three iterations of The Video Game Music Station. The first thread was posted by Dark, and can be found here. Afterwards, the thread was remade by Mikhail Tal, and is located aquí. After a long hiatus, Clair revived the thread, and this link leads to it. Combined, the threads had, what, over 200 songs, and I think we all did a really good job of contributing. However, I found it quite illogical to make a fourth iteration after Clair's thread metaphorically "died", and this club was formed as such. I could post a speech about how video game music affects our lives, but it would be wholly useless since the majority of you know and apply that information more than enough. This was meant to be a simple thread, not something complex and intricate like you'd expect Dark to post. One thing I would like to add in this thread is a Featured Music section where I will take tracks you guys post in discussions and if I find something super-awesome, I'll feature it. Just something to add that stationy feel to this thread so you nostalgic fools don't get upset with my decision to make this club. D:
1.) Love is in the Air from Yoshi's Story, Dark
Have fun, post intelligent comments, and enjoy all that video game music has to offer. ^___^ To jump-start a discussion, I'd like to know what you think of the soundtrack from Kirby's Epic Yarn. I found the piano tracks to be wholly satisfying, and it was a great soundtrack in general, but I found it too upbeat for a Kirby game. I understand it was a really calm atmosphere and a relaxing game, but it sounded as oxymoronic as Blinded By Light from the FFXIII Piano Collections. You can't turn a battle track into piano, and although it sounded nice, the emotion from the track felt kind of mixed and off. Kirby music is supposed to be that dramatic, energetic music we know and love, and I don't think the piano really bolstered that. I have to say, though, I am a sucker for Butter Building en piano.
Jord200
Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess, Snowpeak Ruins You can't deny that TP was an incredable game. This song is perfect for winter or a snowy area. Its so relaxing. You kind of get a sense of being wandering in a blizzard. I really don't know how to describe it. Its easily one of my favorite songs in the game. Pokemon Black and White, Looker's Theme Looker- So you'll help me find the 7 sages? Me- Yes. Looker-Thank you! Here take this Super Rod! Mom- What does that have to do with the 7 sages? Looker- Absolutley nothing! Me,Mom-..... How can you not lol? Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, Dirge of the 14th Kingdom Hearts 358/2 days was my first Kingdom Hearts game, I didn't know much about the story of this game or the serries in general. I learned that this is probably the saddest game in the franchise. This music proves it. Its got some great piano playing, and has a sense of no matter what you do, your going to lose in some way. Its worthy of being final boss music though, and it suits who the final boss is. The Kingdom Hearts serries has some of the best music in video games. This is probably my favorite song in the game. Such a depressing song for such a depressing moment. When I first heard this song, the first thing I thought of was, "I'm sorry Xion." Kazooie
...I've always been a big sucker when it comes to calm tracks, in particular songs like what was found in Kirby's Epic Yarn (Which I haven't really listened to), but this is one that really got to me. I guess in a game like Heavy Rain, tracks like The Chase, The Bulldozer, and The Hold Up become the norm, but then you hear something like Redemption. Even in a game as fast paced as Heavy Rain can be, it still has those calming tracks. I love Heavy Rain, so maybe it's just me. Anyway, like I said, I haven't listened to Epic Yarn's soundtrack much. From what I've heard though, I do like it. Maybe it isn't perfect, but I think it was executed well considering the game.
Dark
This isn't really a "request" type thread, so we don't need a ton of music in every post. But hey, if all of those are your favorites, I can't say anything. I would recommend we keep the volume of music down to a managable level, since we're supposed to be having discussions, not mindlessly posting music. :D One thing you posted, though... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CVWet6YEMqQ Wow, when I first heard that song, I found it quite awkward for Pokemon games to have "cutscenes". It was super-fitting, and I've considered that the best song in the entire soundtrack since that moment. I know that's a really high claim to make, and it's an opinion at best, but I can't find a single song that tops the emotion that piece invokes in me, and I implore you to find a track that is composed as well and brings out emotion as well as Unwavering Emotions. Maybe it's just my bias towards the piano as an instrument, but anything that includes a piano track either makes me feel a sense of sadness or depression, or it makes me feel extremely upbeat. I think the piano is the best instrument at conveying emotion in a musical piece. Also, it's the extended version so I can listen to that while doing physics homework. <3 Heavy Rain Yes, I think Layton or someone was bugging me about listening to the OST for this. Thank you for posting tracks from it so I can sample the OST before I take a deep bite into it. In fact, I have a few OSTs I have yet to evaluate. Heavy Rain, I have to redo Minecraft, err... PilotWings Resort. These next few weekends should be fun. 8D

The Warden
I have been very fond of the song that's in my sig, 'A Fate you have Accepted'. It is such a beautiful song, it just frustrates me that it doesn't play during the final battle, where it totally would have fit.
Lonk
I believe that Juni'chi Masuda, Koji Kondo and Jun Senoue are all brilliant composers. Juni'chi has such ability with bringing a fusion of musical elements and genres (with a bit of a larger focus on Techno) into his music. My favorite generic track from him is Celestial Tower/Dragonspiral Tower/Giant Chasm from Black & White just because they evoke a mysterious, silent feeling like being out during a heavy snow day and no one else is around. Koji Kondo is one of the greats of VGMs. He not only has a vast amount of experience, but also has a wonderful ear for music, making sure all of the quality of his music is the best. I would have to say that Melty Monster Galaxy and Bowser's Galaxy Generator would be among my favorites with the Main Mario Series. Jun Senoue takes a more aggressive turn when it comes to his VGMs. He just really goes all out with everything. Some of my favorite tracks from him would be Starlight Carnival Act 1 and Lost Labyrinth Zone Act 1. Shradow
I want to start off saying the VGM made me appreciate the music in video games so much more than I did previously, and I am grateful. Dark, how can anything be too upbeat for a Kirby game? I had played through Pokémon White mostly at school, with the volume down, so I unfortunately didn't hear Emotion for quite a bit. But when I did, I teared up a bit. In general, I love boss music. They're always so epic and get my blood pumping, or very silly and I love it because of that. Examples... Epic: Galacta Knight (Now this doesn't seem like Kirby music, IMO, but I still love it.) Masked Dedede Dark Bowser/Dark Star Core Silly: Koopa Bros. Majora's Incarnation (Yes, I find this silly.) However, I most love, and will forever love, this song. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aL79isTPIJU As a rule, I love Fire Emblem, but this song is my favorite. It goes from awesome trumpet fanfare one minute to a flowing violin sequence the next. The percussion can be easily missed, but one of my favorite parts of the song. I've played musical instruments, so I can fully appreciate the orchestra. It's a bonus if you've played the games, and you realize how fitting this song is for this boss. And Kondo is awesome. Super Mario Bros. Theme? Legend of Zelda Theme? F*** yeah. And Minecraft's music is so beautiful, it's quite shocking, really.
Lonk
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mx-7nxIRcFI This music is pretty much awesome. Anyone agree? Dark
I apologize for neglecting this thread. It's the busiest time of year for me. No, playing a video game doesn't (for me) and shouldn't affect how you think of its music. I haven't touched a single Final Fantasy game in my life, yet I love all of its music. I haven't played Eternal Sonata, but I can respect its classical background. The majority of the games I get music from are games I haven't played. Conversely, I don't think of the music in games I have played any differently. Games like Super Mario Galaxy 2 have great soundtracks whether I've played the game or not. I feel, however, and this should make sense, that one is more inclined to look at music from a game one doesn't own. I don't care about the music in WiiSports because I have the game and I can listen to it whenever I damn please. Something like Final Fantasy I can only get on YouTube, and I have to search to find the better tracks.
Shradow
I'm with Dark. While whether I own the game or not doesn't affect what I like or dislike, it does affect how often I choose to listen to various songs. On a side note, Dark, are you going to do anymore Minecraft videos? You're really funny and at least I can say I enjoyed them, personally. Now this topic isn't really aimed at Dark, as I already know his preference on the subject, but do you guys consider vocal songs in video games true vgm?
Dark
To cite examples, do you consider things like Still Alive or Want You Gone or even Simple and Clean to be video game music? Basically anything originally presented in a video game, not random crap from Rock Band 3. Also, I will not be making any more Minecraft videos. I kind of made a new account that will have all of my piano videos and maybe some Rock Band 3 FCs and maybe some random dicking around in Minecraft, but I found LPing to be infinitely boring compared to how fun it is to watch. It's not something I'd want to do again, but I'm glad I tried it. (Well, I might have a Pokemon Pinball: R&S LP... we'll see. <3)
Shradow
Yes, stuff originally in video games, like the SSBB opening, or One Winged Angel from FF. Putting a real song into a video game like Guitar Hero or Rock Band doesn't count.
Twig
On the topic of my topic...My thought was that knowing what was there and what was happening during the times the music was playing added a more emotional feel. So yeah...
