Clair
Are you sure you want to jump into such an advanced project when you're basically a GM8 virgin? It's difficult to make a game of that standard with any Game Maker software, especially Lite. xD Downloading Game Maker 8 now though... I didn't know they released a new one. 8D

Tentacruel
First time using the program and you want to make a Pokemon game. Well, I totally haven't heard this a hundred times before. *Deep breath* Making a Pokemon clone would be very difficult. Start with something small. -Griffin
Gotta agree with ADHD. Simple projects are the way forward. That, and GMLite isn't really what you want to use... can't code anything except by drag & drop, iirc. If you're doing to say you can't buy the full version. C++ compilers are free. It's more difficult to learn, but it's got real-world applications in professional projects, will make your games run faster, and doesn't really have any limits on it. I could help you get started on that, but a Pokemon game from day 1 would really be too ambitious.

You can use scripting/coding in the Lite version, you just gotta open the File tab and click advanced.
Yasu
http://gmc.yoyogames.com/index.php?showforum=28 You should learn the functions first, then make a small project.

Tentacruel
Make a simple scrolling shooter like Galaga or something. But try to make it original.
