Well yeah. I'm sure a few of you (Or at least I hope) Have read this amazing series of books. I myself am up to No. 5.
Anywho.... Discuss the awesomeness, the drama, the horror..... And enjoy.
Artemis is a criminal genuis. That sells it to me because I consider myself a genius. Plus I'm biased with things like fairies an trools. Mythofreak! And Holly is one of my friends (I mean I have a friend named Holly)

The logic to how he survives the blue rinse or whatever it's called again makes no sense. You're asleep so you're fine? I just couldn't understand it. In every book his hair color seems to change. In the first he had blonde hair. In another he had black. He also became filled with hormones that at 15 caused him to go after a 13 (was that it?) year old. Secondly he doesn't even become the main character anymore. Becomes almost completely useless. He becomes the unathletic kid who is being carried around by the others. In the first book he was awesome but then as said before is pretty much just there. He didn't do as much other than cause half the problems. I did enjoy the books (the last book in the series I read was that one with the lemur or sloth or whatever it was) but Artemis just isn't as awesome as he was when he was 12.
And by the way, since when is it horror?

A couple of short scenes in The Opal Deceit were horror, I suppose, and presumably more. I only said it cuz I like the word.
Yeah, he was awesome at twelve. He unraveled the secret to the Gnommish Language, kidnapped Holly and did some amazing damn stuff.
And then, more or less, he becomes an important MINOR character to Captain Holly Short. The 4th book practically revolved around her.
I don't get the Blue Rinse thing either. I THINK the bomb blew up high above them, so he, and Butler, were out of range
And I think the hormones kicked in the books at 14. I should know, I'm reading it.
Yeah.
My guess is that since the blue rinse only effected that area where time stopped and that you can't appareantly fall asleep or wake up because of that then taking those sleeping pills and being forced asleep forced themselves out of the time stop area. By that I mean caused them to exist outside it even though they were clearly in it. Sop since they were out of it then the blue rinse had no effect.

By the way, that horror thing. It's been a while so I don't remember the names of the books. Well I remember the Eternity Code but that's it. Third book, right? Anyway the Opal Deceit was the one with that one female pixie and those twin henchmen of hers, right? I think her name was Opal. Anyway, I think by that you mean when Artemis and Holly were in that wonders of the world amusement park place with all the trolls, right? Then I guess that could be considered horror.

Neh, I'm only up to page 113, so I haven't gotten to far. All I know is that Artemis is suffering hormones and likes his new opponent...... And now she has that impy guy No.1 The Demon Warlock *dun dun dun*
Someone else needs to join this convo.
I've read all of them to date, thrice.

I've read the part when Butler kicks the troll's ass even more.

The Atlantis Complex is some crazy stuff. Orion is much funnier than Artemis; they should talk to each other more in the confines of their mind, even if talking to yourself may be considered crazy.
The book isn't so much horror as mostly a fast-paced thriller.

Are we seriously going to try to have a legit scientific discussion about a fictional plot device in a children (or young adult I guess) fiction book? In String Theory, time exists outside of the three classic euclidian planes that make up the observable components of our universe so to quantify it by any way without actually understanding all the crazy theoretical physics behind it doesn't really make sense.

As for the books, I agree with the first comment. He started out as the lovable deviant, but became much more pathetic as the author tried to make him seem more relatable and not as the perfect archetypal anti-hero. I kind of understand why the author would do that so the plot could have some kind of archetypal inner conflict that seems to be the morality of his own actions that eventually changes his personality and not have him just own everyone. Also, a 300 IQ? That's completely ridiculous. Anything above 150 is when IQ tests get really murky, more so than they already are because at that point, intelligence becomes exponentially harder to quantify. The main reason for that is that most IQ tests measure intelligence in relation to the standarized norm set by Mr. Binet and his successors. How would one define 300 comparatively?

For a science fiction series as it tries to be sometimes, it fails horribly because that is inevitably not the intent of the author. As a series for entertainment, it has its moments, but the saving the world plot device gets old. As a series for exploring morality and other philosophical topics, it also doesn't really address anything too well as the entertainment aspect is the main focus. Overall, it comes off to me as something I would've enjoyed reading when I was younger, but gradually grow out of as I mature.

O rly? How about a friendly game of internet chess sometime?

Eoin Colfer is an amazing author in his own right...Have you read Half Moon or The Supernaturalist? They're really good.

I've read the first five (I think) Artemis Fowl books, Half-Moon Investigations and And Another Thing, and they were all reasonably good. While the character development in Artemis Fowl was kinda interesting, it didn't make for a brilliant series and I'll have to agree with most people and say the first book was most definitely the best.
