Video Games and society

Recommended Posts

Video games are one of the most popular forms of entertainment these days. Whether you are at home or on the go, millions of people have this form of entertainment. Unfortunately, not everyone is entertained by them. Most adults presumably around the ages of 35-60 believe they have the most negative impact than other forms of media and would get any chance to blame any negative situation on them. Two people that come to mind are Jack Thompson and Hilary Clinton for attempting to make a law to make all M-Rated games contraband items.

Discuss Video Games and how you believe they impact society.

Video games are about as valid as entertainment in society as television shows and movies are; essentially, video games are pretty damn important.

Anyone who wants to ban M-Rated video games should also be advocating to ban all porn movies and all movies with a rating of R or NC-17, otherwise they are just a goddamn hypocrite.

Video games relieve more stress for me, personally, then any television show or any movie ever will. They are a lot more entertaining, and some of them are even educational. I've learned more about Latin roots from a single Pokemon game than all of the television shows I watch, combined.

Agreed. I remember finding a copy of Golden Sun when I was in 6th Grade. That single game expanded my vocabulary much more than most other English classes can do in the same amount of time. It was also one of the best games I played on the GBA.

ooooh oooh time to use my endless series of thesis papers to anser this! hoooooray!

arguments to continue M-rated video games:
1. provides a running economy and stable work force facilities
2. can distract insolent from major political faults so, the insolent dont do anything stupid (double edged sword this can be a bad thing too)
3. (a lame one which i never use but many others use it) teaches you hand eye coordination (:/ nice rebuttle einstein)
4. a mass part of the media entity, promoting certain things as a linkage institution for government, non-government org, and the general public
5. promotes creativity and deeper mind set concepts
6. constitutional to promote freedom of speech and expression

arguments to ban M-rated games:

1. offends certain groups causing them to hinder a societies progess to deal with it
2. may be unconstitutional because it may alter someones beliefs
3. job specialization becomes weak for harder areas within academics

i decided to write my thesis to continue the promotion of M-rated games simply because i had more arguments to back it up =D

You forgot about one more factor:

They actually reduce crime

M-Rated games create an outlet for healthy levels of aggression. Thus, most people will lose the need to commit crime

More people are likely to believe that M-rated video games cause more aggression and increase the chance of a person turning violent.

Neither side has any definitive proof, though, so you can't really make an outright claim like that to say video games are good.

Jack Thompson and most parents are morons, end of story. You can't say that someone was inspired to kill people by playing video games. Seriously, any mentally stable gamer would be completely aware of the differences between a video game and real life and would know not to attempt to recreate whatever they have just seen, someone prove to me that a mentally stable gamer who didn't have a history of being pushed around or bullied pulled the trigger on someone because he saw it in a video game.

It's a small article about Video Games reducing crime. It is untested, but it does have some truth in there.

Video Game Deprivation is not good guise. It's like sleep deprivation, just much much worse. I don't play M-Rated games. In the PEGI system, used in england, I only play games up to 12+ Because well...I'm 14. And I don't care much for violence. I prefer a game that is fun. Like Pokemon. So Yeah. Even if they banned them, It wouldn't have any effect on me.

And I understand that, but if someone at a young age were to constantly see violence again and again, it would stick with them and make them more aggressive. I don't think we need to ban M-rated games, but how about we actually enforce the goddamn ESRB ratings?

Untested, and therefore invalidated. I want tested proof from either side before I take a stance on that issue, but I doubt either side can come up with any concrete evidence.

This, 100 times this.

Anyone who thinks someone killed a person just because they saw it in a video game is stupid.

It's like saying someone killed a person because they saw it on TV. It's just stupid.

One of my problems with M-Rated games being banned is that once they are banned, the government can ban just about any game they feel is controversial or "too violent" (for example, they could ban all future Pokemon games). It is the major reason why every single video game player hates Jack Thompson and every other person willing to ban all M-Rated video games since banning a classification of video games will not be enough for them.

So they could ban Kingdom Hearts(Because smacking things with a giant key IS SO VIOLENT!1111!!111!!!!1!!!), Pokemon, Yugioh, Minecraft and just about every other game under the sun.

Let's face it, Jack Thompson is the devil of video gaming.

Many people say that M-rated games are bad because they contain violence. But let's face it, is there ANY game without even a bit of violence?
Dora, preschool games. Those would be the only legal games IF Jack Thompson achieved his New World Order:(

But Pokemon is centered around commanding animals crammed into tiny balls the size of a baby's hand to fight each other until one is unconscious, through several means such as electrocution, arson, explosions, windstorms, infernos, giant laser beams, blizzards, tsunamis, earthquakes, meteor showers, poisoning, etc.
At the very least it's violent, even accusatory of animal cruelty.

Oh you guys....

I know you're just trying to make a point, but Pokemon is not violent at all. It contains no graphic visual violence at all, which is what gets an M-rating.
1. A simple act of punching something is violent. Everything doesn't have to be graphic to be violent.
2. Pokemon would still be banned if Jack achieved NWO.
