Master Red
CO-HOSTED BY NAIMO AND MAGNET SOLDIER make sure to read everything through before posting
During the thirties, Kanto was in a war with the Sinnoh and both regions suffered severe damages. The war ended ten years later when the two countries came to an agreed truce. It was just a shallow truce though and both regions have been on the alert since then, just waiting for the other to make a move which would cause another war. Now, about twenty years later (current year: 1963) Kanto has gotten back on track again, everything that had been damaged by the bombs has been rebuilt and the region is flourishing once more. During the war a Black Ops was created known as Team Rocket, they were very useful during the war, both on the battlefield and as spies. After the war ended they were not disbanded, as the government decided to use them as spies in the Sinnoh Region, so they would know if something was stirring up again. What the government was unaware of is that Team Rocket started with criminal activity as well, being led from the shadows by a woman only known to the outside world as "Madame Boss". When they realized that Team Rocket used at least 90% of their government funding to support their criminal activities, it was too late to stop them. They still needed them for the espionage, but they couldn't support a criminal organization with money and thus the co-operation between the government and the Team Rocket organization ended. ------------------------------------------ You’re a teenager/young adult who aspires to be a pokémon trainer. For what purpose you’re getting into pokémon training is completely up to you! As the rules of Kanto states that anyone that aspires to be a trainer has to have their High School Diploma as well as completing an intensive two week long course at one of the Trainer School’s in the region, so they know that anyone in control of pokémon are mature and stable enough to train them, You are arriving at Cinnabar Island to attend their Trainer School and prepare for the adventures that lies ahead of you. Your adventure is about to start but will the lessons taught at the course really be able to prepare you for what lies ahead?

Make sure to read through the rules and all the information before posting. You may skip the fakémon section if this is not of interest to you at the moment (you must read through the pokémon modifications part though) as well as the badges section. To let us know that you have read everything and agreed to the rules, include the color PURPLE somewhere in your app. 1. All Advanced Clause and standard YCM rules apply. 2. Don’t argue with me, Naimo and Magnet Soldier. We are the creators and hosts of this RP and thus we’re in charge. We’ll try to be as fair as possible, but don’t expect to baby you and allow you to catch everything you want, have one million shiny pokémon and win every battle you ever take part in. 3. The RP will abide to the three strikes and you’re out system. We will first point out things that we deem unfitting or rule breaking, if you continue you’ll be warned. After three warnings you’ll be banned from the RP. 4. While we don’t demand PERFECT spelling and grammar (there are people from all over the world on the site after all and not all of us have English as a first language, including me: Master Red), we demand that you do put your best effort into writing the post and at least know how to use basic grammar (if you don’t know the difference between their, they’re and there you’ll be a bit of a nuisance). All in all, we shouldn’t have to decipher your post to understand what your character is doing and your posts shouldn’t leave us crying blood because you’ve butchered the English language. A slip up every now and then is something that is tolerated and we won’t be on your case about this unless it’s frequent and really annoying, in that case you’ll be asked to use a spell checker before posting. 5. Take a hint! If an NPC we have created asks you if you can help them with something, it’s usually a good idea to do the [s]slave labor[/s] quest as it will keep the RP moving in the intended direction. 6. This is not the games or the anime world; it’s a combination of both. None of the characters from the games or the anime exists until we say they do. This world is made to be way more realistic than the actual pokémon worlds (in games and anime alike) and you should therefore act as such. ALWAYS remember that this is set in an equivalent to the early sixties of our world and you are expected to act the part! If your character suddenly uses a cell phone or computer you’ll immediately get warned. 7. You may not create NPC’s (this doesn’t include random passers-by, nurses, store clerks and the likes) without asking a host for permission first! 8. While you may know a lot about pokémon and the pokémon world, your character surely doesn’t. Your character most definitely doesn’t not know everything about the regions (especially the ones they are not originally from), religions, gyms or pokémon (this goes especially for incredibly rare or legendary pokémon). 9. To prevent that people get way behind in the story (due to time zones etc) you must wait until at least 2 people have posted since your last post! This rule doesn’t apply when you’re in a pokémon battle with someone however. 10. If you’ve missed out on something, please check back to the OOC thread and ask questions there, someone is bound to be able to explain things for you. 11. Remember to post often and make the best out of your experience in this RP!

Pallet Town A small town, not very notable in any way and barely has a local grocery store. The town is expanding in a steady ace though as many choose to settle down here because of the beautiful landscape and the quiet small town life. It’s ideal for families with young children and as there is a shuttle ferry leaving frequently to Cinnabar and there’s only a short drive to Viridian shopping, schools and work is nearby. Viridian City Viridian is the smallest city in Kanto that, even though they’ve applied several times, have no official gym. Viridian is sometimes called ‘passers-by city’ as a lot of people are simply doing that when they come to spend time in Viridian. Whether they are trainers on the way to the gym located within Viridian forest or heading to the Indigo Plateau to compete in the Pokémon League or people coming from Pallet for work or shopping that’s simply what they do, just passing by, not settling down. Viridian Forest (Gym) Viridian Forest is, as the name suggests, a vast forest that is located just outside of Viridian City and it holds the only path between Viridian and Pewter City. The city is also considered holy by Mewists, who believes that it has been blessed by the legendary pokémon Mew and that it also is one of the few places where it frequently comes to rest in. You can find religious symbols carved into trees as well as charms hanging from branches along the paths and there’s also a temple within the forest where travelers often choose to rest for the night. One of the official gyms is also located within the forest, not very far away from the temple. The gym is a bit special in the sense of it not having one official gym leader, instead one of the seven shrine maidens is stationed there every day between 14-19. The gym doesn’t have a type specialty but most of the pokémon that are used by the leaders are Grass or Bug types as they only use pokémon that live within the forest (there are exceptions such as Pikachu and Pidgey) Pewter City Pewter City is most famed for its museum dedicated to geology, astronomy and paleontology and it’s the prime field trip destinations of schools all over Kanto. The museum is the only place in Kanto where you can view fossils of extinct pokémon such as Aerodactyl and Kabuto (although sightings of Kabuto have been documented at very deep sea levels) as well as the meteorite rocks that have been found in Mt. Moon. Mt. Moon A few centuries ago a meteor crashed down into Mt. Moon that was earlier known as Cerulean Mountain. The name came from the belief that the meteor was in fact a piece of the moon that had fallen from the sky and into the mountain. After the meteor had crashed into the mountain, reports on cleffa, clefairy and clefable sightings in the caves started to appear. The mountain has a partly lit tunnel going between Pewter and Cerulean. Mt. Moon is one of the places in Kanto where pokémon not indigenous to Kanto lives, namely Sableye and Sabelly. They are rare though and it’s unusual to run into one in the lit path between Pewter and Cerulean. Cerulean City Cerulean City is known for its beautiful surroundings, fresh air and its peacefulness. There’s a river running through the town and out into the ocean that is known for its cleanliness. It is said that the grass in Cerulean is in fact greener than in any other city due to the freshness of the water in the town. Cerulean City is sometimes called “the garden city” as all houses tend to have beautiful gardens that the tenants take great pride in. There’s an annual contest that awards the most beautiful and well-kept garden in the city, which is a very prestigious award to win. Due to the calm nature of the surroundings and the small town feel of the city, Cerulean has made a name for itself to be the most relaxing and romantic get-away for tourists. They have several spas and spa-hotels in the center, many of which cater especially for couples and newly-weds, and common activities include tours of the Cerulean Cave and the Cape. But many don’t set up activities, letting the tourists themselves decide on what they want to do while visiting the city. Of course, first class information can always be found near the check-in desk and guests are always welcomed to ask for tips on day trips at the front desk. Cerulean Cave The Cerulean Cave is only accessable by swimming over the river that divides it from the city. The cave is said to once have housed the legendary bird Moltres and that is why the walls in the cave are warm instead of being cold. The rocks found in this cave are used by many spa facilities in the city as the warmth is perfect for relaxing the muscles of both pokémon and humans. It’s strictly forbidden to take rocks from the cave itself as there’s a business put up just outside of the cave that sells them for ridiculous amounts of money. To visit the cave is completely free of charge and many take the opportunity to do so while visiting Cerulean City. Cerulean Cape According to folklore there is an ancient magic connected to the Cerulean Cape that will make the love between two people grow stronger if they both wash their hands in the pond. It is also said that if two people unknowingly enters the water at the same time they are soul mates. Of course all of this is just old stories, but due to these stories the cape is a popular spot for couples as the area is very romantic and many choose to honor the old stories by washing their hands. It’s also a common place for people to get married by during the summer. Many have debated if the stories might in fact be true as the pond at the Cerulean Cape is the only place in Kanto where the Hoenn native pokémon, Luvdisk, seems to be indigenous. How these Luvdisk ended up in the pond is a mystery but the small colony of these heart shaped fishes has been living there for as long as people can remember. It is believed that the folklore about the ancient love magic surrounding the water in the cape started due to the Luvdisk’s living in the water. Rock Tunnel The Rock Tunnel was created many centuries ago by the people of Lavender Town as a possible escape route if their enemies, the psyists of Fuchsia, would penetrate their defenses and take the city. The tunnel was also used for a means of transporting supplies into the city from Cerulean City, both during and after the war. Nowadays the tunnel is unused due to it having caved in at several places and you cannot go through it. The government scared of more cave-ins decided to close up the tunnel to prevent people from entering. There are discussions about opening up the tunnel once again though, securing it with wooden beams as well as opening up the passage way. Lavender Town Lavender Town is a religious mecca for the followers of the Yūrei religion. The Pokémon Tower is a central part of this religion which is located within the town. The tower is also a historical landmark, due to its nature of being a pokémon cemetery as well as being the only pokémon cemetery that is located within a tower. As the tower is a cemetery it has attracted a whole lot of ghost pokémon to it, but due to ghost pokémon being holy in the Yūrei religion you may not catch any ghost pokémon within the tower. If a ghost follows you out of the tower it is encouraged to capture it though as it is believed the ghost has bonded with the soul of the trainer and therefore should stay close to him or her. The whole town is filled with statues of Gengar, who is a deities of the religion and there are many shops selling talismans and other religious trinkets. Except for the Pokémon Tower there are no tall buildings in the town and almost all houses are designed in an old fashioned way, being built with bamboo and having rice paper screen doors. The city lies a couple of miles away from Saffron City and you can access Fuchsia by going south over the series of bridges. Sadly, you can just walk there as of yet and thus the journey takes two days to complete. Saffron City (gym) Saffron City is considered the capitol of Kanto as it is the second largest in Kanto and has easy access to Celadon, Cerulean, Vermillion and Porta Vista, as well as having a train connection between Kanto and Jotho. Here you can also find the most luxurious shopping in all of Kanto along with a great night life, fine dining and lots of other means for entertainment. The city has a gym as well which is located very near the center of the town, right by the Saffron Park. The leader, Ken, is a man in his upper thirties who has been running the gym for the last ten years. The gym was opened at longer hours and more days a week a couple of years back, but as Ken is a family man now he has changed it up to a steady nine-to-five schedule, five days a week. Vermillion City (gym) Vermillion is a quaint smaller scaled city located near the ocean. It has a famed harbor with ships departing to the other regions as well as daily ferries to Cinnabar Island. The city is famed for its fresh ocean air and there’s also a beach. The beach is not overly crowded however as Porta Vista lies just a few miles away and many choose to take a day trip there to enjoy their beaches instead. The town also has easy access to Saffron as well as to Cerulean through the underground tunnel. The city has a gym located not far from the harbor which is lead by Mary-Ann. Mary-Ann is the oldest person to hold the honorable title of gym leader as of yet, being 68 years old. She’s a sweet old lady but you sure don’t want to anger her because she’ll give you the scolding of your life. Mary-Ann is the only Gym Leader in Kanto that uses pokémon that are not native to the Kanto and Johto regions, this is because she did a fair share of travelling in her younger days. She hasn’t specialized in a certain type of pokémon, but she uses speed to her advantage and thus has very fast pokémon on her team. Porta Vista (gym) Porta Vista is a city by the shore that lies in between Celadon, Maidens Peak and Vermillion City. It’s a city with wide-stretched white beaches and palm trees, making it an ideal holiday resort for sun lovers. The city has several hotels and is crammed with restaurants, souvenir shops and beach shops as the city is quite reliant on the tourist culture. The town also has a Gym that is located on a small island just outside of one of the main beaches. It’s accessible by a ferry that leaves every half hour from 12-18 during the weekdays and from 12-15 on Saturdays. A return trip with the PVG ferry costs 5$ and it is the only means of transportation to and from the gym as surfing on a pokémon is strictly forbidden due to the many tentacool that live in the deeper parts of the water. Even though tentacool are mostly harmless creatures the law was set up to avoid any accidents as the tentacool could start to grow hostile if they were disturbed by trainers frequently travelling through the water to reach the gym. The Porta Vista Gym is lead by Summer who specializes in Water and Grass type pokémon and it’s also the only gym that has a souvenir shop inside of it with “Summer merchandise” such as t-shirts, buttons, cards and photos. Maiden’s Peak Maiden’s Peak is a landmark in Kanto that lies on the way between Vermillion and Porta Vista. There’s a tragic legend surrounding the place that dates back almost two thousand years. Around two thousand years ago there was a civil war raging in the far away Unnova region and Kanto decided to send soldiers to aid the resistance. A maiden that lived in the small village near the area that is now known as Maiden’s Peak was in love with one of the soldiers that was being sent off to the war. She swore to wait on the large cliff until her love returned, but he never did. According to the legend, she died while standing there and her body became a part of the cliff itself. Her petrified body became a monument and the location was named after the legend. It is said that her spirit still haunts the area and many have claimed to see a young woman standing on the cliff, looking out over the ocean with longing. A shrine has been built near the monument where people come to pray for loved ones that have gone missing and ask the maiden’s spirit to guide them to safety. There’s a village near the landmark which goes by the same name as the monument. Each year in September a festival, called the Kimono festival, is held in honor of the legend. The name of the festival comes from the very intricate and beautiful kimonos that are made in the village, which are being sold during the festival. This festival is highly important to the followers of the Yūrei religion which is really strong within the village. All houses within the village are built traditionally, being made completely out of bamboo wood and having rice paper screen doors. As near everyone within the village follows the Yūrei religion spirit tags are hanging everywhere and there are many shops selling charms and religious trinkets. Another reason to why the Yūrei religion has latched on so well in this village is because of it being very attractive to spirits. It is believed that it’s the monument that attracts the spirits and it’s thus more likely that the legend holds some truth to it. Celadon City (Gym) Celadon City is a densely populated City situated between Gringey and Saffron City, and is home to many families. It is also unusual, as it seems to have grabbed parts of every city in Kanto together, and pushed them into one. It has a large pond that was originally planned to be home to a clan of Clamperl, rather like Cerulean Cape and it's Luvdisc, but that was taken over by a group of Grimer before they had a chance to place the group of Clamperl in the pond. The owner of the pond is a young man on the other side of the lake, isolated from the rest of the city, and he is known to own many Chansey, and a Lapras to cross the lake with. The city itself is situated within a forest, similar to Viridian City, and is connected to Lavender City through an underground tunnel, much like Cerulean and Vermillion. It is soon to be connected to Fuschia by the Cycling Road, which has increased the tourism in the city, as many people are waiting anxiously for it to be finished for a chance to try out the Cycling Road. It also has a department store under construction, which has been told to become more than twice the size of any in Saffron, causing the rival city to react with the creation of a large skyscraper, which apparently will be named 'Silph'. Celadon gym is a gym focused around three types, grass, poison and bug, as the leader is obsessed with flowers, and all pokémon within the gym must be related to flowers. As such, many people within the city own at least one Oddish, or any of its evolutions. The gym Leader, Cleo (Short For Cleopatra) is the granddaughter of Mary-Ann, the gym leader of Vermillion, but, unlike her Grandmother, only owns one foreign Pokémon, a Breloom, which rarely Battles. Her main Pokémon are her Meganium and Vileplume, the first pokémon she had, though the Meganium is thought to soon retire. Cleo likes has put up a challenge for people that wish to battle her. In order for them to reach her, they must cut though, move or climb over a series of thick vines. She believes that if a trainer can’t success with the task, they’re not eligible to challenge her in the first place. Gringey City (gym) Is quite the metropolis as there are a lot of available jobs there and even more to come as even more power plants and factories are under construction. There’s barely any parks or green areas in the town as those have been dismissed for more concrete apartment buildings, power plants and factories. Many families settle down here due to the many work opportunities. The city has an official Gym as well which is located within one of the old factories and it’s the only gym in all of Kanto that is completely self sufficient when it comes to electricity. The gym leader is called Brett and he specializes in Steel and Electric-Type pokémon. Cycling Road this is a fantastic and very innovative project which is planned to be finished within the next five years. The plan is to connect Celadon and Fuchsia with this road where the only way to travel allowed is by bicycle. As of yet it’s mostly under construction but the part connecting Gringey and Fuchsia is to be opened soon. Fuchsia City (Gym) Fuchsia City is the most family friendly city in Kanto, as it has a large playground in the north west corner, a battle arena in the south east, and has many detached houses dotted around. It is a rather large city, with a small local trainer school that is taught by Brian, the gym leader. The main attraction of the city, though, is the large zoo at the top. It has over 50 visitors every day, with opening hours of 12-18 every day, and is flocked to by people from all over Kanto for a look at pokémon that are otherwise unseen in the region, such as Croagunk and Skorupi, the most famous families of Pokémon in the zoo. At the moment, the zoo is an official 'no-capture' zone, and is patrolled by police regularly, although they are thinking of opening it for a few hours every Saturday for capturing. Although this will be very pricy for the trainers, they believe it would increase the amount of visitors. The zoo owner lives next door to the gym, which is built into a small mountain that the city seems to have grown around. Above the gym and on the mountain there is a small church, which was built as a home for the Psyists, a religion that was created to Honor the power of psychic pokémon. The mountain itself has a cave that's only entrances are through the gym or through the church, and it is home to rare psychic pokémon such as Beldum, Meditite and Spoink. Many trainers visit the church each day, mainly for the cave but some for the bloody history of the church, and to see the story of the ancient war between the Lords of the Mind religion of Fuschia City and the Yūrei religion of Lavender town, two of the oldest religions in Kanto. Fuschia Gym is led by Brian Sasane, the lead priest of the Psyists, and the strongest psychic type user in the Kanto region. He is the only gym leader to have two teams, one which has only pokémon that can be caught in the Kanto region (Including Johto pokémon) and one that he reserves only for those who have defeated the league, which has pokémon from all over the world. His Strongest pokémon, regardless, is his Alakazam, which has been reported to be able to lift large hills with its mind. Neon Town (gym) Neon Town is famed for its incredible nightlife and many sources of entertainment. Gambling is something that has become a trademark for the town and people are travelling from all over Kanto and even from other regions just to try their luck. The town has a gym located in the center of the town, near the five star hotels, various night clubs and the largest casino in town. Unfortunately the gym is often closed as its gym leader, Veronique, only keeps the gym opened for four hours, three days a week (Tuesday - Thursday). This is because she also performs at the nearby night club “Sulphur” most every night. Due to these circumstances she refuses to challenge anyone that has less than 6 badges as they would only be a waste of the very precious time she has. Unlike most other Gym Leaders, Veronique doesn’t specialize in a specific type of pokémon or a special strategy, she only uses very rare pokémon though which makes her a force to be reckoned with. Cinnabar Island Cinnabar is famed for being the research capitol of the Kanto region, having both a pokémon lab and a research facility, as well as a trainer school for aspiring trainers. Cinnabar is also unique in a way as no child born in the town is allowed to set out on a Pokémon journey before completing and graduating from the trainer school. It’s not unusual that children from Pallet attend the school as the ferry that travels between Pallet harbor and Cinnabar frequently makes this possible. The island also has a weekly shuttle ferry between Cinnabar and Vermillion that leaves every Friday at noon. Sea Foam Islands The Sea Foam Islands are two islands located just west from Cinnabar and students that are attending the Trainer’s School often do field trips to this place. Even though the water around the islands are warm year around and the islands is a perfect get away for sun lovers, the cave that connects the two islands through an underwater tunnel are ice cold. How this strange occurance of nature has come to exist is unknown, but legend has it that Articuno once lived in the cave and it has been frozen ever since. Magnet Soldier
Religion will be important to the RP later on, however, we only ask of you to at least skim through this part. If you have a character that is religious they will have to answer to one of these religions/ideologies, you may not make up your own! You can skip the fables section completely if you wish, they are just cute little stories compiled by Naimo that explains how the pseudo-legendaries came into existence as well as some other pokémon.
Psyism] Psyists believe that the world was originally uninhabited, and was simply a piece of rock floating in the universe. Then, the original psychic pokémon, pokémon from deep space, crashed onto the planet, and without any way off, they decided to make the planet their own. They used their psychic powers to create mountains and valleys and managed to build the shape of the land. Some, wanting to be different, changed and evolved into different types of creatures, some becoming green creatures and creating the grass, some becoming rocks and inhabiting the mountains. Some created the cold at the Polar Regions and some creating volcanoes and inhabiting the equator. Some became beings of water, and created the oceans and rivers. This evolved into the world as it is now. The Believers in this tale are mainly based in Fuchsia City, which is believed to be the original landing point of the psychic pokémon and they think of this place like Muslims think of Mecca, or Christians of Jerusalem. Followers that do not live in Fuchsia City make a Pilgrimage to the city every year. The religion has three main holidays, one at the beginning of the year, which is when they believe the pokémon landed, one in the middle of the year, which is when they finished making the landscape, and one at the end of the year, which they believe was when the pokémon finished evolving. Strong followers of this Religion refuse to catch pokémon without the psychic type. When a follower becomes a trainer, they are sent to the cave with only a kadabra and five pokéballs to catch their first pokémon. If they return from the cave, failing to have captured a pokémon it is seen as a sign that they are not ready to become a pokémon trainer. If a Child in this religion is born with psychic powers, they are revered as a demigod and are believed to create acts of great Power, some are even thought to one day create peace in the world. Members of this religion tend to live a lot longer than normal people, the member with the longest life span as of yet died as a one-hundred-and-thirty year old. It is believed that the strong bond with their psychic pokémon is the secret behind their long lives. However, this doesn’t explain why other psychic type trainers don’t live for such a long time.

Mewism] Mew is the highest deity in this religion and is often referred to as the earth mother. She is believed to have been the first and only pokémon Arceus created. She was impregnated by Arceus and gave birth to all pokémon as well as the first humans. She now travels the world, mostly cloaked in invisibility, while she watches over her children. The earth mother rarely interferes with the lives of her children in any way as the decisions they do are theirs to make. The only times she will interfere with the ways of the world is when a large portion of her children’s lives are threatened. She has a couple of resting places scattered all over the world that she visits every now and then on her long journeys across the world to watch her children. One of these places is Viridian Forest in Kanto which has lead to Viridian being the area in Kanto where this belief is the strongest. As all of the earth mother’s resting places lie within forests pokémon that dwell in these forests are considered lucky or blessed. It is not deemed rightful of a person to catch a pokémon within these holy sanctuaries of the mother unless the pokémon in question is captured for its own well being’s sake or if it wants to be captured. The wants to be captured part is something that has been interpreted differently by many believers. Some consider a pokémon that attacks a trainer to “want to be captured” while some believe that a pokémon that is befriended and wants to travel with the trainer is a pokémon that “wants to be captured”. Mewists consider Life to be the greatest and most important force in the universe. They believe that deliberately doing things to directly put one’s own or other’s lives in danger is one of the greatest sins. As life is valued so highly in the religion believers often tend not to participate in pokémon battles as they believe that is putting a pokémon’s well being in danger. Other simply don’t agree with this part as pokémon battles rarely are directly dangerous for a pokémon’s well being and simply believe that one should switch out a pokémon that is getting quite tired, thus avoiding any major injuries. Most often the people that are very religious are the ones that doesn’t partake in pokémon battles while people that are not as religious tend to participate in them but are wary of their pokémon’s energy and health. As long as you haven’t ended your own life death is not deemed as something bad within the religion. To die from old age is deemed prestigious within the religion and funerals are salutations to the life that the deceased has lead.

Yūreism] The Yūrei religion is highly spiritual and has its main focus around spirits and ghosts. The religion is strongest around Lavender Town and Maiden’s Peak as both of these places seems to attract spirits. It’s common for believers in the religion to have spirit tags hanging in strings on and in the near proximity of their houses, believers usually wears at least one spirit tag around their neck. The purpose of the spirit tag varies but the most common ones are the ones that repel malevolent spirits and the ones that attract good spirits or the spirits of ancestors. As spirits are worshipped within the religion ghost pokémon are treated as deities. It’s common that temples devoted to the religion have statues of ghost pokémon in them and religious trinkets and charms are often inspired by features of a ghost pokémon. It is considered a good sign to be approached by a ghost pokémon as long as it is not hostile, a hostile ghost pokémon is looked upon as a bad omen and is taken very seriously. Ghost pokémon may only be captured if they are approaching a trainer outside of holy grounds and is not hostile. A hostile ghost pokémon should never be captured as this is sure to bring doom and destruction upon the trainer and his or her ancestor’s spirits. Priests and Priestesses often let themselves be possessed by one of their ghost pokémon during their church services, which are called séances, and then preach to the crowds while possessed. To be possessed by a friendly ghost pokémon is something that is something that most followers seek to experience as this is believed to give them temporary access to the spirit world. The most famed festival connected to the religion is the Kimono Festival that is held in the end of September each year at Maiden’s Peak. The festival is held at night and the whole village along with the areas around the monument is lit up by bonfires and colored rice lanterns. During the festival the paranormal activity at Maiden’s Peak is at its strongest and it is believed that the boundaries between the real world and the spirit world are at its weakest during this time. During the festival people feast on food and pokéflutists performs music throughout the night. The festival is ended with the ceremony of sending rice paper lanterns out in the ocean to help lost spirits to find their way home and hopefully leading the spirit of the warrior back to the spirit of his beloved that is still waiting for him on the cliff.

Regism] Followers of the Legendary Golems are very anti-Arceus. They believe that Regigigas was a foreign pokémon from a different planet, who saw that Arceus was not a great god and had many evils ways with the world, i.e. became a tyrant. Regigigas represents benevolence and believing in making the world right, so he came to this world and tried to conquer Arceus. A lengthy battle commenced, yet Regigigas was ultimately unsuccessful against Arceus; however, he failed not because he was weak - in fact, he was even stronger - but because Arceus had cheated and used his tyranny against Regigigas. During the battle, Regigigas had exhausted much of his powers, and when he fell from grace and onto the ground, he exerted any remaining powers and placed a spell on himself to ensure that he will continue to live. Thus, when he hit the ground, he shattered into three beings - Regice, Regirock and Registeel. Arceus realized he had failed, and despite a detailed search, never found the three Regis. Followers believe that until this day, Arceus is still searching, and that they are chosen to do everything in their power to reunite the great Regigigas, and properly finish Arceus for good. This is the founding legend; people who often believe in the Legendary Golems make Arceus their absolute sworn enemy. They refuse to catch pokémon that are Fire, Electric or Flying, and they often prefer a mix of Steel, Rock and Ice. They believe that when the time comes to seek one of the Regi golems, their dreams will lead them the way to where they are hidden. Interestingly, none of them believe that they are the sole reuniter of Regigigas; rather, everyone who believes in the golem will play a part. As a result, there is always one "[Element] Master", and only he or she is worthy to receive one of the Regi golems. They are treated with very high respect, and are under only the "Neutral Baron", who is the only person worthy to reunite Regigigas. The religion only has one festival which marks the death date of Regigigas, and the birth of the three Regis. During that day, everyone wears either blue, brown or grey; nobody is allowed to wear white or yellow, as they are considered Arceus colours. On this festival, everyone fasts from sunrise to sunset, including the Pokemon. Once sunset has passed, it is tradition to cook a big feast, as a way of celebrating the Regis' birth, and it also looks forward to the time when Regigigas can rule once more. The believers are split into two groups, The Regists and the Gigases. The Regists are absolute hardcore believers who believe in the things aforementioned. They also totally boycott Electric, Fire and Flying types, regardless of whether they're pure or dual typed. As an example, a Regist would never train a lanturn as it is part electric type. Gigases are less so; they do believe in the back legend, although they think that the fight was fair, so they are less anti-Arceus. They also think that humans shouldn't interfere with Regigigas' rebirth, and that it will come naturally to them, so if they don't see Regigigas when they die, then they trust that they were alive at the wrong time. Also, while they won't capture Fire, Flying and Electric types, they are willing to own Pokemon that are part Fire, Flying or Electric. Owning a pikachu is a big no-no, but a magnezone would be okay due to it not being a pure electric type. This religion is very small scale in Kanto and at most only has a few followers in each town. Followers of this religion are often wary of revealing their faith as their beliefs are frowned upon by many in Kanto due to their bashing of Arceus. The religion has its roots in Hoenn, where its more accepted and has more followers.

Celebism] (Celebism isn’t a religion it’s a sociological ideology) If you're a Celebist, you believe that the world developed naturally, and that living beings came to be due to evolution. They wouldn't believe that Arceus, Ho-Oh, Luiga, etc, are Legendaries; rather, they see them as being Pokemon that came from stronger Pokemon, hence why they are more powerful. They believe that evolution is on-going, that what you see now is merely one stage in a lengthy line, and that if someone from several hundred years later start collecting Pokemon, they would be familiar with compeletely different shaped and named Pokemon, and perhaps new elements too. The reason why they're called Celebists is because of Celebi's time travel ability; they believe that Celebi knows everything, and that she would know exactly how the future of Pokemon will look. Another reason for their belief in her is because prior to humans, land would have remained untouched and populated with forests and mountains, etc. To them, Celebi signifies everything to do with nature. Of course, Celebists do also look into the relationship between humans and Pokemon, and how it changes over time. The Celebist theory goes all the way back to 1800, so it's been around for some time, and Celebists often draw upon past records and compare it with more modern research, so they can chart it.

Believers think that they are Arceus' siblings, and they help in monitoring the world. They believe that many years ago, the world had turned evil, with very few good people left; Arceus could not bear to destroy the world himself, so Ho-oh and Luiga helped him. Volcanoes were created and used as Ho-oh's method of destruction, and Luiga flooded the earth with rain. Only the good people were forewarned, and thus prepared for the onslaught. Cresselia was responsible for protecting the good people. After all evil was destroyed, Arceus promised that he would never again allow the world to become so evil, and to mark his promise, Ho-oh kept breathing fire until the sun was created, and Luiga made rain. So people who follow this religion see rain as Luiga's continuous blessing, and that if there is flooding, she is warning them that evil is trying to arise again. They also see summer as Ho-oh's blessing, and if it becomes too hot, then evil is trying to arise. Cresselia also promised to keep watch over them and thus made the moon. Generally, no-one's as fussed if the moon doesn't appear (they do acknowledge that the moon waxes and wanes), although if the moon doesn't shine when there's been a hot summer or flood, they take the prior warnings even more seriously. If the moon does shine, then it means that they shouldn't be as worried. Arceus also created the Birds and the Dogs to do Ho-oh, Luiga and Cresselia's biding. They are regarded as the guardians of the planet, and they help keep the peace. People also become excited when an eclipse happens; they believe that Cresselia, Ho-oh, Luiga and Arceus are meeting, and to keep it private, Cresselia blocks out the light temporarily. When they are done, she moves away again. Believers aspire to training Fire, Water, Pyschic and Flying Pokemon, although they are not too fussed if they catch Pokemon that are not that type. Festival-wise, they have three; "The Day of the Burning Flame" is hosted directly in the middle of summer, and that's the day when they get to celebrate Ho-oh. "The Day of the Great Monsoon" is in the middle of monsoon season, and that celebrates Luiga. "The Last Moon" happens during the last time that the full moon will appear for the year, and that celebrates Cresselia for her ever present watchfulness. During each of those festivals, they eat, drink and be social with each other, so it's quite a laid back and sanguine time.
Shayminism Shayminism became popular during the 1820s, but it has been around since 1775, so it predates Celebism. Shayminists also believe in the whole evolution, but they disagree entirely with Celebists about society. They believe that society has two set structures, and that what is happening is we are switching between them (so it's like Shaymin, who has two forms); the first structure revolves around the concept "Shy Interaction", in which trainers do not regard Pokemon with as much value as other humans, and so they keep them trapped inside their Pokeballs. The second structure involves "Courageous Interaction", in which owners actually care for their Pokemon and go to pains to be friends with them. They can often summon proof that society keeps shifting beteen structures, even though critics say that Shayminism has no more relevance in modern society.
The metagross and the diglett Metagross, when he was still a legendary, once crossed paths with a diglett while he was visiting the earth. The diglett was mischievous in nature, and seeing that metagross had a terrible temper, decided to trick him. He insulted metagross; naturally, the steel pokemon tried to squash diglett, but he was too fast. Instead of disappearing underground, he kept appearing and disappearing, and thus winding up metagross. The latter grew so angry he kept stomping the ground and eventually caused a great earthquake; the diglett, realising his mistake, immediately hid underground, where he encountered two more frightened digletts. Arceus came down to stop metagross, and thus banished him from being a legendary to pseudo-legendary status. Even though metagross could no longer be powerful enough to cause earthquakes, the three digletts continued to stay together, and they formed the first dugtrio. How lickitung got its tongue Dragonite is famed for being benevolent; one day, when he swooped down to earth to recover a dratini egg that had accidently fallen from the sky, he made a dreadful mistake and picked up a lickid egg instead (this was during the time when Lickitungs didn't have long tongues). As he was returning to the heavens, Arceus asked him to make a delivery; seeing as he still had the egg in his hand, he left it atop a big tree, and went to do his quest. Now, the lickitung mother returned to see that her egg had gone; distressed, she began to seek everywhere, and eventually found it where dragonite had left it. Unfortunately, she could not reach - the tree was too difficult to climb, and nothing was long enough to poke her egg down. Lickitung tried to find someone to help her, yet there was not a single pokémon around. She then began to stretch her own tongue out; for many, many hours, she stood still on the spot, stretching her tongue, and her hard work prevailed. Her tongue safely reached her egg, and she pulled it down. Dragonite happened to return at this time and saw Lickitung take the egg; enraged, he swooped down and almost landed a blow, had the egg not begun to hatch. A baby lickid emerged just as Arceus descended to see what the matter was. Dragonite realised his mistake, and admitted to causing distress; thus, Arceus banished him to pseudo-legendary status. Since this day lickitungs have long tongues, just in case a dragonite would place their egg atop a large tree. Tyranitar and wormadam’s cloak Tyranitar used to love hunting and eating burmies. One day, three sister burmies were unfortunate to stray in the great pokémon's path; recognizing their enemy, they escaped to three separate locations. Tyranitar chased the first burmy to the beach; there, she buried herself in the sand. Tyranitar dug up most of the sand, yet he could not find burmy. So tyranitar returned to the forest, where the second burmy sister had hid herself; the former's sense of smell was so acute he tracked down his potential prey, and the burmy managed to lose the tyranitar by escaping in some tall grass, before she buried herself underground. Tyranitar tried to find the third burmy, but was unaware that she had leapt onto the back of a passing skarmory, and was thus safe in the air. For many days and many nights, tyranitar grew into a formidable rage, until he grew so feral he could no longer be considered a Legendary. The burmy sisters then reunited, each wearing a brand new cape; when the time came to evolve into wormadams, each sister proudly showed off their new capes, and it was in this way that burmies found the ability to wear different capes. Salamance and the wits of Magnemite Salamence used to be highly aggressive in the air, and he used to forbid any Pokemon from flying as high, or even higher, than him. One day, a daring Magnemite hoovered above Salamence; the latter attacked with great ferocity, and sent Magnemite tumbling into his peers, who had witnessed everything. Most of them panicked and scattered, but two remained with their injured friend. All three happened to have bolder personalities, and rather than allow Salamence's crime to go unnoticed, they hatched a secret plan to shame Salamence. Several days later, when the injured Magnemite had recovered, they challenged Salamence as a trio. Naturally, the former was not at all happy, and he tried to take a swipe at them. The Magnemites discharged three Thundershocks; the surprise of the attack caught Salamence by surprise, and he fell to the ground. He had been given his lesson, and thus his status downgraded to pseudo-legendary, and that was how the first Magneton formed. Garchomp and the Desperation of Shellder Garchomp used to be a common sight among beaches and forests; one day, when he was by the sea, he saw a Shellder lying on the ground, exhausted from being washed up onto the shore. Garchomp used to feed on Shellders, and so he tried to grab the Pokémon, when suddenly it was, via some psychic ability, thrown back into the sea. Confused, Garchomp saw a nearby Slowpoke also jump back into the sea, and it didn't take him long to realize what was happening. Enraged, he dived after the Slowpoke and Shellder; unknown to him, the latter two were actually good friends, and when Shellder regained her senses, she realized that they were in trouble, and suddenly bit Slowpoke's tail, thinking that Garchomp wouldn't try to swallow her now that she was attached to a Pokémon he did not eat. Garchomp was furious, and after an unsuccessful attempt to rip Shellder off Slowpoke, they managed to escape to a solitary island. During the fight, Shellder had been gravely injured, and died on Slowpoke's tail; rather than pull her off, for he felt some responsibility for not saving her, he let her stay there, and gradually she changed shape. During that time, Slowpoke trained himself so hard that he soon learnt how to stand on two legs, and armed with new abilities, he tried to return to face Garchomp, but the latter, driven wild by his failure, had retreated into living in a cave, and thus the rematch was never made. However, Slowbro picked up much admiration from his fellow Slowpokes, and so it came to be that Slowpokes would evolve into Slowbro. Hydreigon and the Ruined Friendship There was a time when Seviper and Zangoose were good friends, and would constantly look out for each other. The Hydreigon grew jealous of their friendship, for he was alone, and he tried to tear them apart. First, he observed them individually, and when he felt he knew their personalities better, he made a plan. One day, he left a Pokemon's corpse in Seviper's path, just when he was looking for something to eat. As he devoured his meal, Hydreigon took the liberty to attack Zangoose. Naturally, the Normal Pokémon cried out for Seviper; when he found him, he expected his friend to help, yet Seviper would rather eat and be full than help Zangoose. The latter grew so angry he turned his claw on Seviper, and thus a fight broke between them, and Hydreigon watched with great amusement. Arceus happened to know the truth, and he immediately banished Hydreigon to pseudo-legendary for his wickedness; however, he left Zangoose and Seviper alone, and thus their feud never healed.

As this is set in a time before computers and quite limited technology some modifications has to be made. Pokéballs are made completely out of metal and are not colored red and white as the modern ones, they are simply steel gray and have a red screw mechanism on the top to open and seal it. The Pokédex has, of course, not been invented yet. Instead trainers carry the Pokéncyclopedia, a book containing sepia toned photos along with basic information about all known pokémon. Legendaries are also mentioned in the book but they have no photographic images, instead there’s artwork of them and the information given are extracts from stories and legends. There are no such things as pokégear, pokétch or other devices of that sort and nothing similar exists yet. As Bill won’t be born for another couple of decades there’s no teleportation or storage system for pokémon as of yet. Instead you may store a pokémon at a pokémon center and if you happen to need it again you can just walk into the nearest pokémon center and ask them to deliver your pokémon to that pokémon center, you can also ask them to deliver it to another city’s pokémon center so you can pick it up there. This service is free of charge, but it’s quite slow. You can, however, pay to have the means of transportation for your pokémon to be upgraded for a faster delivery. The free service is Butterfree operated and will take several hours to arrive, sometimes even a whole day depending on how far away your pokémon is. By paying 100§ you can upgrade to a Fearow or Pidgeot delivery, which is a lot faster than the butterfree operated delivery. If you pay 100§ for a delivery from Saffron or Celadon you might even get a dragonite operated delivery, which is even faster than the normal fearow or pidgeot ones. By paying 200§ you’ll get a lightning fast abra delivery, these are available in all towns and many prefer them as they will give them instant access to their pokémon, even though it’s pricy. An abra delivery is free if you’re at the Indigo Plateu as a contestant in the Pokémon League. There’s one last, often over looked, source of delivery that exists within the pokémon center, The Delibird Express. The Delibirds have several uses within the pokémon centers and all centers have plenty of Delibirds roaming them. The primary use of the Delibirds are to deliver messages to other pokémon centers and delivering or picking up supplies from the local pokémarts. They are sometimes used as paramedics as well, giving healing presents to injured pokémon to heal them up a bit until they can be moved to the nearest pokémon center. Delibirds are also used to deliver the bill to trainers that has used a service at the pokémon center that isn’t free (such as the delivery service). If a trainer don’t pay the bill or don’t acknowledge the Delibird, things can get nasty. At first they will be patient and simply just wave the bill in front of the trainer, while squawking. If the trainer still ignores him it’ll start pecking and if the trainer fights back or continues to ignore it will drop nasty presents atop the trainer. Of course, compromises can be established, i.e. if you are in need of a fast delivery, but don’t have the money at the moment you can be given a set time before a Delibird is sent out to find and claim the money from you. As there’s no teleportation service you might think that you can walk around with an unlimited number of pokémon on hand. WRONG! When you buy pokéballs the clerk will check that you don’t have more than six pokémon on hand already and nobody is allowed to sell any more than the amount of balls left for the trainer to reach a full team plus one (i.e you have three pokémon, the clerk will sell you a maximum of 4 pokéballs). If a trainer is found having more than six pokémon on hand they will be asked to pay a fine and the pokémon to be captured most recently will be released. A trainer can ask to release another pokémon on hand if they wish to do so. If the trainer has several more pokémon on hand than what is allowed they will have their trainer’s license revoked. Obviously, the TV-phone has not yet been invented so in their place all pokémon centers have a free phone service for trainers to use and phone booths are a common sight in all towns (these are free as we can’t be bothered with such small sums of money being retracted).

In this time all pokémon are known except for a few exceptions like Mewtwo, Porygon and Castform as these are pokémon that were created by humans and thus haven’t come into existence yet. Of course, pokémon such as Mew and other legendaries haven’t been proven to truly exist, as they are mainly just legends. Everyone knows of them but no documented sightings have ever been proved and thus all information that exists of them is the old texts and drawings. However, even though all pokémon are known only the pokémon indigenous to Kanto (and Johto as pokémon seem to migrate between the two regions) can be found here. There are a few exceptions such as baby evolutions and evolutions to first and second generation pokémon. There are some areas in Kanto where small colonies of pokémon from other regions exists in as well, such as the Cerulean Cape with its Luvdisc colony. As Moss Rock and Frost Rock doesn't exist anywhere than in Kanto we have changed the restrictions for recieving Leafeon and Glaceon. Eevee now evolves into Leafeon by being exposed to a leaf stone and it evolves into Glaceon by leveling up to level 20 while holding nevermeltice. As we (the hosts) all find female Mr.Mimes completely ridiculous we have made Mr.Mime a male only pokémon in this RP. This version of Kanto also introduces some fakémon, mostly pre evolutions, to make more sense out of breeds like Kangaskhan and the Taurus/Miltank breed.
(We do not own the pictures used to display these fakémon, we take no credit for the ideas or the work behind them. We do, however take creadits for the pokédex entries made for each of the fakémon and the idea of Arctix as well as the dex-entry goes to Naimo) Kangaskid [Baby Pokémon] NORMAL The pre-evolution to Kangaskhan and Kangasking. When Kangaskid is not cozed up in their mother’s pouch they usually play with the other Kangaskids in the herd or with their parents. A Kangaskid will never be far away from its parents and it is advised not to approach a lone Kangaskid due to the parents protectiveness of their young. If a Kangaskid’s parents die they will stay by the parent’s corpses and cry for hours. Unless the rest of the herd is nearby and take care of the young, it will cry until it dies from grief. When it hatches, it knows the moves Comet Punch and Leer at birth and then proceeds to learn Bite (lv.7), Tail Whip (lv.13) and Fake Out (lv.19) before evolving at level 20. http://th09.deviantart.net/fs51/300W/f/2009/294/c/3/115___Kangaskhan_by_PokePro.png Kangasking [Paternal Pokémon] NORMAL The evolution of a male Kangaskid. It looks like the female Kangaskhan without the pouch on its belly. When the mother Kangaskhan has gone hunting for food, Kangasking looks after the young, protecting them with their lives. A Kangaskhan and a Kangasking selects one partner for mating and they stay together for life, if one of the two dies or is captured, the other will not find another mate. The Kangas breed live in increadibly equal societies, the males and females taking turns to brood the egg or take care of the young while the other one hunts. Kangasking learns the same moves as the female Kangaskhan at the same levels. (Kangasking and Kangaskhan) http://fc03.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2010/188/6/7/Kangaskhan_Genders_by_clampfan101.png Creamoo [Calf Pokémon] NORMAL The pre-evolution to Miltank and Taurus. Males evolve into Taurus and females evolve into Miltank, this happens at level 18. It’s a small black calf like pokémon with a pink mule, horns and feet as well as a white mid section. It has a bell around its neck as well as small red and white balls surrounding its neck. When the male evolves it learns horn attack and the female learns milk drink shortly after evolving. When it hatches it knows Tackle and Tail Whip and it learns Rage (lv. and Stomp (lv.15) before evolving. http://i688.photobucket.com/albums/vv250/PokemonAcanthite/543.png Wurmix [Sand Worm Pokémon] GROUND Wurmix is the pre-evolution of Onix. They are quite small when they are born but grow quite rapidly in size. Their bodies are made completely out of sand which grows more compact as it gets older and stronger. It evolves into Onix after leveling up while knowing the move harden. When hatches it knows the moves Mud Slap and Sand Attack, learning Tackle at 7 and Harden at level 10. http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh47/jensklots/coloured_sandwerm_by_slacka18-d31xkt3.jpg Knyther [Tiny Mantis Pokémon] BUG Knyther is the pre-evolution of Scyther. Knyther has not yet grown used to its sharp forearms and is therefore prone to accidentally hurt itself and others. Usually Knyther’s stick to their mother’s back as they are an easy prey for other pokémon because they are not only small and weak, they are also terribly clumsy. It evolves into Scyther at level 15. When it hatches it knows the moves scratch and leer. It learns Focus Energy at level 7, Quick Attack at level 10 and Pursuit at level 13 http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh47/jensklots/Fakemon__Scyther_Pre_evolution_by_LostButterfly92.jpg Beetol [Tiny Beatle Pokémon] BUG Beetol is the pre-evolution of Heracross and Pinsir. Beetols are small creatures that are very imbalanced due to their small hands and feet along with the single horn sticking out the front of its head. They are completely dependent on their parents as they often topple over and can’t get up on their own. A Beetol without a parent will not survive unless it’s cared for by a human or another pokémon. When it hatches it knows Harden and it learns Tackle at level 10. It evolves into a Heracross if its atk exceeds its def and it evolves into Pinsir if its def exceeds its atk, both at level 12. When it evolves into pinsir it learns Vicegrip, Focus Energy and Bind. When it evolves into Heracross it learns Leer, Horn Attack and Endure. In the rare cases where a Beetol has an atk stat equal to its def stat it won’t evolve at all. These Beetols tend to die an early death as they cannot fend for themselves. If they do survive, which is unusual unless they are in the care of a trainer, they’ll learn Rollout (lv.20) and Bide (lv.30). http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh47/jensklots/heracross_baby_by_frozenfeather-d31zxqk.jpg Lickid [Licking Pokémon] NORMAL Lickid is the pre-evolition of Lickitung. Lickid examines everything with its tongue and its memory is based on flavor. The tongue is almost as big as its body and it cannot keep it inside of its mouth as it doesn’t yet know how to roll its tongue up so it would be able to keep it inside of its mouth. Whenever a Lickid eats it stores some extra food in its mouth so it will never go hungry. When it hatches it knows Lick and will proceed to learn all attacks that Lickitung normally learns, with a few exceptions. (It will never learn Stomp or Rollout). Lickid evolves into Lickitung when its happiness is full. http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh47/jensklots/Tasticky_by_orohnpokemon.png Corsweet [Coral Pokémon] WATER/ROCK Corsweet is the pre-evolution of Corsola. Corsweet hides among rocks under water in order to escape predators. Their hiding places also often have great food sources in means of plankton and algae so they will not need to come out to feed either. During the night groups of Corsweet will gather to play and sing. When it hatches it knows Tackle and it learns Harden (lv.6), Bubble (lv.12), Recover (lv.17) and Refresh (lv.17) before it evolves into Corsola at level 23 (when it also learns bubblebeam). http://fc06.deviantart.net/fs15/f/2007/116/8/a/Corsweet__Fakemon__by_Seyanni.png Stanteer [Small Deer Pokémon] NORMAL Stanteer is the pre-evolution of Stantler. Though they haven’t yet developed any antlers they tend to run around head butting trees. This often causes them to be chased by pokémon living in the trees as they have angered them. They never tend to wander off far from their herds as they are easily frightened. It’s advised not to follow a Stanteer that is running away, its herd is likely nearby and mothers tend to get aggressive if their young are upset. It knows the move tackle at birth and proceeds to learn Leer (lv.7) and Astonish (lv.13) before evolving at level 18. http://img705.imageshack.us/img705/3164/stantlerpreevo.png Skarling [Iron Bird Pokémon] NORMAL/STEEL Skarling is the pre-evolution of Skarmory. Its plumage is partly made of steel but it still has some normal feathers left. The steel plumage is much too heavy for the chic in order for it to be able to fly and thus they are often seen hopping about on the ground, struggling with its small metallic wings in an attempt to fly. They are very adventurous and tend to wander away from the nest, but they are also very aggressive. It is advised not to pick up a wandering Skarling as it most definitely will bite with their sharp metallic beaks. It knows the moves Leer and Peck at birth and learns Sand Attack (lv.10), Swift (lv.13) and Agility (lv.16) before it evolves into Skarmory at level 20. http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh47/jensklots/Skarpeep_by_DaemonMoon.jpg Feragiph [Giraffe Pokémon] NORMAL Feragiph is the pre-evolution of Girafarig. The males have not yet developed any psychic powers, but the females seem to have minor psychic powers in form of high empathy (being able to sense emotions). Feragiphs are curious creatures that often tend to wander off from their herd as they explore the area around them or follow something they find intriguing. Sometimes they don’t keep track of where they’re going and end up getting lost from the herd. In these cases they will sit down on the ground and cry loudly until someone finds them. It knows Tackle and Growl when it hatches and learns Astonish (lv.7) and Stomp (lv.13) before evolving into Girafarig at level 19. When it evolves it will learn confusion. http://th00.deviantart.net/fs46/PRE/i/2009/224/d/0/Fake_PKMN_Girafarig_Prevo_by_Natsuki_ki_ki.jpg Sabelly [Darkness Pokémon] GHOST/DARK Sabelly is the pre-evolution to Sableye. Sabelly is unable to dig out gem stones for food and are thus relying on their parents to be able to provide them with food. Sabelly will stay in dark areas as it is scared of the light, even if its parents were to leave the cave and go outside a Sabelly won’t follow them. What causes this fear of sunlight is unknown, but a Sabelly that finds itself out in the sunlight will panic and get itself to a shaded place as quickly as possible. It knows Leer, Scratch and Foresight at birth and the proceeds to learn Night Shade (lv.9) and Astonish (lv.13) before evolving at level 16. http://27.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_kzcvtkOsOx1qbnyl6o1_500.jpg (Sabewel is NOT a pokémon in this RP, only Sabelly is used!) Plasseia [Aqua Pokémon] WATER Plasseia is the pre-evolution to Lapras. Plasseias are very friendly and curious creatures and they often approach ships, no matter their size, to examine them. The mother Lapras always keeps an eye on their young, but will only interfere with their curiosity if they approach something dangerous. At night, you can hear the Laprases sing to their young, lulling them to sleep. When it hatches, it knows the moves Water Gun, Growl and Sing and it proceeds to learn Mist (lv.7), Body Slam (lv.13), Confuse Ray (lv.19) and Perish Song (lv.25) before it evolves at lv.30. http://pictures.fanart-central.net/n/Nepryne/89451.jpg Arctix [Arctic Fox Pokemon] ICE Arctix is an all-female race best distinguished for their tail, which is always upright and twisted. Their tails untwist only to use Ice Brush, their signature move. They often trap cold air in their tails, and it is rumored that if a human tried to touch the air, they would immediately contract frostbite. How Arctixes manage to breed remains a great mystery, given how they are an all-female race. She wears it down but the hair by her right ear is pulled back and secured with a pin that looks like a big pink and white water lily. - Eye Color: Her eyes are very light blue, almost like ice, and lies in contrast to her black hair. - Scars, Tattoos and notable Birthmarks: She has one heart-shaped birthmark in the area in between her thumb and index finger on the left hand. - Make-up: She uses mascara to enhance her eyes, making them really stand out, and a soft red lipstick that is a shade darker than the actual color of her lips. - Clothes: She wears a white and pale gray buttoned shirt with short sleeves and a checkered pattern. The top two buttons of the shirts are undone which gives the shirt a slight cleavage, but she mostly has them unbuttoned as she believes the shirt is too tight in the neck when buttoned. To complement the buttoned shirt she wears a light gray plaited skirt that is cut around her mid-thighs. She also wears a pair of knee high socks that have black and white stripes and she has a pair of black tennis shoes on her feet. Like all believers of the Yurei religion she wears a necklace with spirit tags attached to it. Hers is a simple silver chain with three spirit tags. The middle one is supposed to keep evil and malevolent spirits away, the one to the right is supposed to attract friendly spirits and the one to the left is a family tag that belonged to her grandmother and it allows the spirit of her to watch over Amaya and keep her safe. All the tags are made out of silver and are very thin; they all have inscriptions from an ancient language carved into them which are colored black. The sign on the middle one means Sanctuary, the one on the right means Spirit and the one on the right means Family. In a case where she feels like dressing up a bit more, like in the case of a gym battle, she carries a red and white kimono with a pink floral pattern in her charcoal colored messenger bag. The kimono is very beautiful and of exquisite material, which is to be expected as she’s from the village by Maiden’s Peak that is famed for their kimonos. Religion/Ideology: Yureist Personality: As Amaya was born and raised in Maiden’s Peak, she is a highly spiritual person that follows the yureist religion. Even though she’s a firm believer of the yureist teachings she acknowledges that not all people share her beliefs, maybe even thinking they are silly, and she doesn’t claim that other’s religions are wrong. As a yureist she tends to pray to spirits, most often to the ones of her ancestors (namely the spirit of her grandmother) for help or guidance or to thank them for keeping her or others safe. She is quite a fan of history, myths, legends and fables and likes to read about them. Each night, before she goes to sleep, she plays ”the song of the maiden” on her pokéflute. It’s an old and very sorrowful song, telling the story about the spirit at Maiden’s Peak, that she has learned by heart. The reason to why she plays the song every night is because it was her grandmother’s favorite song and it always made Amaya feel at peace when her grandmother sang it to her as a child. Amaya tends to be a bit quiet as she often drifts off into her own mind and it’s common that people have to ask her the same questions several times before she actually realizes that they are talking to her. That was something that was a bit troublesome for her in school as she sometimes missed out on important information that the teacher was informing them about or annoying the teacher by forcing them to ask the same questions over and over until she finally woke up from her day dreams and could respond. This lead to her not having very good grades when she graduated, which was a shame as she really is a clever girl. She is a very helpful person that always tries her best to help others out. Sadly, she’s also a bit clumsy and often ends up getting in the way instead of being of help. Her mother actually banned her from the kitchen due to her clumsiness, but in all honesty it could just as well have been because of the fact that Amaya is a terrible cook. Ever since Amaya was a child she has been afraid of thunder and lightning, she also grows a bit uneasy during a storm as she knows there may be a chance of lightning. If she hears the thunder rumbling she will freeze up and start to hyperventilate and sob. Even if she’s inside she grows uneasy and she always have troubles falling asleep during stormy nights. If there’s a stormy night she can often be heard singing or humming “the song of the maiden” quietly to herself in an attempt to calm herself (she’s unable to play the flute during storms as she grows shaky and breathes too unevenly). What this fear came from is unknown as she has always been frightened by the lightning and nothing terrible has happened during a thunderstorm either that could’ve caused her to develop this fear. Bio: Amaya has lived her whole life in the village near Maiden’s Peak. Except for the occasional visit to Celadon or Vermillion to do some grocery shopping, as well as the family’s yearly vacation in Porta Vista, she hasn’t seen much else of Kanto and she has never been outside of the region. She has been to Lavender Town once as well to attend the funeral of her mother’s beloved meowth Lily. The lack of travelling is not something that has bothered Amaya much as she liked the life in the village, but she knew that she wanted to do a fair share of travelling after she had graduated from High School. A big reason to why she wants to travel so much is that she doesn’t want to end up like her mother, regretting that she didn't travel during her youth. Perhaps her urge to travel was enforced from this knowledge and that she wanted not only to travel for her own sake, but also for her mother’s. Because if her mother couldn’t see the world then maybe Amaya could see it for her? She’s quite a talented pokéflutist and knows a couple of songs completely by heart. Her pokéflute was given to her as a birthday present when she turned seven and she was trained by her mother to learn how to play the complex instrument. She has given a couple of performances during the Kimono Festival and actually won second prize in the pokéflute competition during the festival two years ago. She always shared a strong bond with her grandmother and she was devastated when she fell ill and died three years ago. Before her death, her grandmother gave Amaya one of her spirit tags and told her that that way she would always be able to be with her. As such, that spirit tag is the most cherished of Amaya’s belongings and she never takes the tag necklace off. Amaya is very used to being around pokémon as most everyone in the village allowed their pokémon to be outside of their pokéballs and allowing them to walk around in the village as they pleased. Both of her parents and grandparents owned a couple of pokémon as well. Of course, she has never trained a pokémon and most pokémon in the village are used more like pets anyways. During the Kimono festival there were usually show battles going on between both visitors and villagers so she has seen battles several times during her childhood and they intrigued her. She got her first pokémon on her sixteenth birthday from her parents, a murkrow which she named Medea. Medea was the baby of her parents own murkrows, Hugin and Munin, and the two has been good friends since then. As Amaya finished high school this year she has decided to sign up for the course at the Trainer’s School at Cinnabar Island in order for her to be able to get a Trainer’s License. She figured that if she was going to travel anyways she might just as well do it as a trainer. Her parents also insisted on it as they wanted to make sure their daughter was going to be safe on her journeys. Amaya doesn’t mind though, she had always found the show battles during the Kimono Festival intriguing and she would very much like to train and battle with Medea, and perhaps along with other pokémon later on. She is often perched on Amaya’s shoulder with a stuck up look on her face. As she’s proud she’s an extremely sore loser and can be cranky for days over a loss. She cleans her feathers a lot and dislikes getting her feathers messy from water or dirt. Other: As most people in the village allowed their pokémon to be out of their pokéballs at all times many chose to mark their pokémon in one way or another, so they wouldn’t confuse their pokémon with a pokémon of the same species belonging to another person in the village. Thus Medea has been marked with a blue ribbon around her left leg. When coming across new things, pokémon or people he will at first approach them, to stop a small distance away and stare. If he deems that who or what he's looking at isn't of danger he will go closer and inspect further by nudging himself against the person/pokémon/object. Sadly, Leo's judgement of what's safe isn't the best and he'd most likely approach a wild Gyrados as long as it wasn't actually thrashing about. Another quirk Leo has is that he tends to get dizzy from rolling around, which is a Spheal's most common way to move about. He also often mistakes balls and other sphearical objects for other Spheals. Sometimes blush as well. - Clothes: Regiana always wears a sleeveless blue dress that falls to her ankles. She also wears an ice-blue jacket made from a veil-like material, and is lined with white lace and various blue beads. On her feet are a pair of flat white shoes with unusually thick souls. She is never seen without some form of jewelry, and it is common for her to wear no less than ten bracelets on each hand, a pair of big earrings, and several necklaces and rings. Religion/Ideology: Gigagas Personality: Regiana is a bit snobbish, yet she is well-educated and actually has a kind disposition. She is not likely to start arguments, but nor is she likely to break them up. She is naturally curious, intellgent and sharp, yet when it comes to being practical (e.g. cooking a meal), she fails very badly. She enjoys her creature comforts immsensely, and demands comfort wherever she is. Bio: Regiana was born and brought up in a Regism household, which has possed quite a few problems. Her father happens to be the Ice Master, and as a result of his status, Regiana was exposed to a lifestyle of luxury and superior connections; e.g. the Rock Master, Steel Master, even the Neutral Baron. Due to her status, Regiana never went to school; instead, she had a governess who taught her everything. Of course, she was allowed to socialise with other high-ranking children of Regist parents. Regiana, however, has been a Gigagas all her life, which has made her home life rather awkward; although her parents and older brother are unaware of this, she cannot stand them talking about Arceus in a very damning way, and being very patriotic about Regigigas. Regiana herself doesn't know why she's a Gigagas, although she vaguely recalls reading something from a book that caused her to rebuke her Regist belief. When Regiana was fifteen, her parents came home one day and gave her Valena to look after, in the hopes that she might learn how to be kind around Ice Pokemon, and possibly even be the next Ice Master. However, she was forbidden from letting Valena fight in wild battles until her parents had decided who would start training as the next Ice Master. Their decision was not easy, and after three years, her parents decided that her brother was best suited for the job. This relieved Regiana from being bound to her religion all the time, and she realised that she had to get away from her family, otherwise their conflicting faiths might caus a great breach; after some arguing, her parents allowed her to enroll at the Trainer's School. Regiana is currently aspiring to become a Sociologist, specifically looking at how religion affects trainer and Pokemon relationships. He also has a Locket with a picture of the whole Weedle's band inside, with his face torn out. On the outside of the locket, a Pokéball shape has been engraved. Personality: Micky is a fun-loving guy who loves taking risks. He took one of the first ever Sky-dives, breaking records for the highest ever fall from which the person survived. Despite this, he has chronic Claustrophobia, and shudders at the thought of an Elevator. He also loves music, loving to play his guitar, and regularly shows off about it. And with right, being former member of the Weedles(The Pokémon world Equivalent of the Beetles, just more Hardcore). He loves Pokémon a lot, and has already travelled around with Shifty while in the Weedles. Bio: Micky doesn't remember much of how he became claustrophobic, but was told by his parents that it was probably because of him falling down a well at a young age and being trapped there for three days. Micky was born in Celadon City, but was raised in many different places, as his Parents moved a lot. As such, he had a terrible education and never made any good friends. At first, he lived in Celadon City. He remained there for the first 5 years of his life, then moved to Saffron just as his education was supposed to start. In saffron his was taught the basics of Pokémon from the Gym leader of Saffron, but left the city within the following year. For the next 6 years, he was constantly moving from Porta Vista, to Neon City to Vermillion, when his Parent's decided to stop halfway between Vermillion and Porta Vista. He lived in a small cottage there until he was 15, before having to move again. His final home was in Fuschia, where he was introduced to his partner Pokémon, a Sabelly. It had escaped from Fuschia cave, being chased by some Elgyem, when Micky decided to defend it. The Elgyem attacked him, but he remained standing. Seeing his determination, the Elgyem left them alone, and the Sabelly was very grateful. It decided to travel along with him, although it wasn't allowed to battle because he wasn't a trainer. Micky met Emolga while in the Band, on his way to a small gig in a bar in Neon City. While travelling through the routes towards Neon City, the Minibus(If they have them?) broke down, and left them stranded for a few hours while waiting for the Mechanic to fix it. Micky, while taking a quick stroll through the forests around them, saw a bright flash of light. Being Curious, as most humans are, he went to take a look, finding a lone Mareep shooting Thundershocks at a nearby tree. It was obviously training, and Micky, bored as he was, decided to watch it. For about an hour he watched it, entertained by it's perseverance, until it stopped suddenly. Micky didn't know why, but Mareep's ears had perked up and it was looking around anxiously. Afraid it had noticed him, Micky started to edge backwards, until the Mareep was shot with a large blast of Fire. Noticing the group of Ponyta approaching, Micky snuck forwards again. He knew that Mareep was an uncommon Pokémon in Kanto, so if it was hurt that would be quite bad, and that after that training Mareep was in no state to battle. So, after analyzing the situation, he decided that the best thing to do would be to defend the Mareep. He summoned his Sabelly, and started to attack the Ponyta, even though he wasn't allowed to battle yet. Although it would have been an easy fight for the Ponyta, Shifty and Micky had the element of Surprise on their side, and somehow managed to push the Ponyta off. Mareep, recognising Micky's assistance, decided to tag along with Micky, and followed him all the way back to the coach, and Micky accepted it as a friend, naming it Sparky. She also helped start the coach, using her electricity to start the engine. She has been with him for the last year and a half. Micky became a Guitarist a year before he and Shifty met, and it was obvious he had a natural talent. He was playing guitar professionally a year after he met Shifty, along with 3 friends from Fuchsia, the rest of the Band. Unable to think up a good name for the Band, they settled with the Weedles, and became an Almost instant hit in Fuschia and nearby Cities. Three years on and they are very big, but Micky has become bored with the Guitarist life style. He took his Guitar and left the Band, and at the worst time possible, because a year later they became the biggest band in Kanto, Johto and Hoenn(Not so much in Sinnoh because of the fact they're Kantovish.) Micky decided that, because his biggest dream had been to become a trainer, that he'd do just that, and finished his High School Diploma, and has now joined the Trainers School Summer course. Now with a house of his own in Pallet town, he visits the School every day and can feel that he is close to becoming a real Trainer. However, he is slightly forgetful and makes mistakes a lot, but usually tries to cover this up with coolness. Other: Shifty is extremely fast, but often forgets to defend. When in battle she retains some of her Childish Personality, but her battle instincts kick in and she's much more serious and aggressive. Accustomed to travelling, she wears a tawny coloured jacket and steel-grey long-sleeved shirt and jeans with a pair of generic black trainers. The only thing closest to jewellery that she has is a small crystalline key she has dangling from her right ear in lieu of an earring. Religion/Ideology: Regist Personality: A bit of a tomboy, Sophie is generally raring to be on the move and thoroughly enjoys travelling and sports. She is also considerably carefree and outgoing, often going out of her way just to talk with someone she likes the look of, even if she's on a tight schedule. Despite her carefree attitude, she will strongly defend her faith and will not stand insults because of it. Often times, this has led to outbursts of anger and, on one occasion, violence. Due to her lifestyle, she has developed a knack for most practical tasks, such as cooking, especially if they are crucial for surviving in harsh conditions. Bio: Born in a heavily Regist village in Hoenn, Sophie has learnt, respected and taken to heart the teachings of Regism. The first seven years of her life were spent in her birth village where she spent her time learning the basics of life and Pokémon as well as the teachings of Regism. She was a gifted girl and quickly learned fast. Growing up, she'd often explore the mountainous border of her village to find and befriend the many Pokémon that made their homes there. When she reached the age of 8, her parents, wanting the best for her, sent her to a top-level boarding school in Unova. For a few years, this was okay with her. She saw it as an extended holiday and enjoyed it thoroughly. Eventually, at the age of 12, she became problematic to the school. Growing heavily homesick, Sophie rebelled viciously against her school and became overzealous with Regism, along with a few other students. Often, she would leave the school grounds for days at a time, only to be brought back by the police and be put under a house arrest of sorts. This kept going for a year or so until she was confronted by the on-site counsellor. The counsellor suggested other outlets for Sophie's ambitious behaviour and eventually, Sophie stopped behaving badly and became heavily involved in many sporting events within and outside of her school, even winning a couple events on behalf of her school during inter-school competitions. During her stay at Unova, she made many friends, both human and Pokémon, and was very popular, at least after her year long episode. Between lessons, while sporting events and clubs weren't being held, she would perform volunteer work at a nearby nursery. During one of these many times, while Sophie was using the toilet, three of the children had wandered off into a cave. Noticing that they were missing, she headed off towards the cave after making sure that the other carers were being more attentive, remembering that it had held their interest for a while. Inside, she found the trio near the mouth, pestering an injured Roggenrola. After scolding the children for running off, she took care of the injured Pokémon for a while and cared for it. When it was well, she gave it a chance to leave and head back to the cave, but it preferred to stay with her. Keeping it, she named it Ringo, and it rarely left her side afterwards. When her education was finally over, Unova had a lower compulsory education age for their students, she decided that she would begin travelling. Taking her trip over to Kanto first, she came across the Trainer School on Cinnabar Island and figured that, considering she was already on a journey with a Pokémon, she may as well make it more official. Grabbing a few of Poké balls, she assigned one to Ringo to make it official and set her sights on finishing Trainer School. It drops at most down slightly past his ears, but he keeps it combed away around his eyes. - Eye Color: Brown. - Scars, Tattoos and notable Birthmarks: Has a tattoo of a bombshell on his right shoulder. Not too large and he mostly keeps it hidden with his jacket. - Clothes: A beat up brown bomber jacket, adorned with the symbol of a Noctowl on both shoulders as well as on his chest. It belonged to his father, who was part of a bomber squadron for Kanto. He usually wears aviator shades to complement this, and ragged dark blue jeans with a black belt. He wears dark brown boots as well, although they aren’t that noticeable. Religion/Ideology: Celebist, however he was raised under a Lugian/Ho-Ohism ideology. Personality: Braylon is arrogant, sarcastic, and generally an ass. He only really cares for himself, he can and will step on others, given the choice, to be more successful. He’s very cutthroat and to the point, not to mention doesn’t have the best temper. Although he might be an ass, he does have some decent characteristics. He will always keep a promise, even if he loses something from it. Even though he can step on others to get what he wants, he only does this to people that he deems are on his level. He would never do harm to someone weaker than him, or someone in a bad situation. He also despises it when people call him by his first name. Bio: Braylon was born in Johto, his father was from Kanto while his mother was from Johto. He grew up in Olivine city and thus was raised in a mid-class environment. His father was away most of the time, and thus he was raised by his mother. His relation with his rather was… Strained, to say the least. His father was part of the Noctowl bomber squad located in Johto, and was assigned to assist Kanto in the war. (his father originally moved to Johto to evade the war in the first place, so he wasn’t a very happy man) He moved back to Kanto to get work to support his family, but sadly Braylon and his mother could not move to Kanto. His mother was very quiet. She did not talk much, but was a very kind woman. Growing up Braylon was subjected to quite a bit of bullying, and thus was a coward. The constant bullying and lack of a father figure lead him to become arrogant and cutthroat. On his 15th birthday he received a gift from his father, the first in many years, it was a male larvitar. It’s name was Tyrant and he often accompanied Braylon everywhere. During high school he would constantly get in fights. He ended up with the nickname “Cage” from consistently winning bicycle cage fights. It was also due to these fights that Tyrant began developing an aggressive personality. Braylon only barely passed high school, so he didn’t have many options. He decided that going for a Trainer’s License might be a good option, if not, the military was always there. Hairline is kept in prototypical greaser style, though a few bangs are left to hang by his face in order to function comfortably. He has a tendency to apply too much grease, resulting in an odd sort of wave that simply doesn't work with the rest of his hair- if left for a couple days, it settles into a more natural sort of casual blown-back look that more achieves the style he desires. - Eye Color: Dark green, though typically hidden beneath sunglasses. - Scars, Tattoos and notable Birthmarks: None of note; Surprisingly, he lacks even noticeable burn marks. - Clothes: Blaine dresses in the usual Greaser fashion of the days, donning a rebellious black leather jacket cut slightly longer than average, with a red decal of a flame inked onto the back. The jacket is a prized position and kept impeccably pristine, without a single tear or tarnished zipper in sight, and it is usually left unzipped. Beneath the jacket, he wears a plain but bright red shirt that adds a violent splash of contrasting color to the rest of the black. Loose, black jeans with a single pointless dangling chain add to the effect, made from a rather expensive denim that could almost pass as leather at first glance. His shoes are what appear to be brown engineer's boots, with reinforced metal toe plating, though they're compact enough to get around in still- beneath which, he has a pair of regular black socks. As accessories, he adds a pair of black fingerless leather gloves, and a bright red bandanna tied around his neck with the emblem of a flame in silhouetted black in one corner- however, most noticeable are his signature pair of great -though relatively simple- black shades, which he never removes for any reason, even indoors. His wallet, if ever shown, is black leather with a gratuitous chain hanging from it that dangles a flame-shaped charm. Religion/Ideology: Comes from a Ho-ohist family tradition, but practices little. Personality: Blaine is an unhelpful, contrary and rude thug that seems to be concerned almost entirely with childish social protest- he dresses like a criminal, acts arrogant and standoffish and seems to be nothing more than another simple grease-monkey hopping onto the latest trends. Almost perpetually half-hearted, people might be tempted t call Blaine 'lazy', as he very rarely puts actual effort into things. If people argue with him, get angry or annoy him to a certain point, he'll tune them out completely, agreeing or disagreeing with whatever they say in an attempt to get out of whatever he's been put into as quickly as possible. When in a group, Blaine says very little, preferring to be the aloof, unknown fellow in the corner who's far too cool to be concerned with petty little mortal things that others might be concerned about. This is, of course, a thin shell Blaine's constructed for himself in recent history. Traditionally, Blaine is incredibly intelligent, passionate and curious- to the point where he seems less like he absorbs information, and more like he consumes it. Blaine's mind and heart are hardly separate, but two different parts of the same whole- which is to say, he thinks with his heart, and he feels with his head. While others might aim for it, Blaine finds it almost physically impossible to emotionally separate himself from his work- his opinions invariable are absorbed into whatever he learns with every bite, and become a fundamental part of his understanding that he won't question. This fact makes it almost impossible to change his mind when he's set upon something- both Blaine's pride and his sense of reasoning won't allow him to end up being 'wrong', and thus he comes off as incredibly mulish and impossible to talk to, especially if you're attempting to correct him. Because of this, Blaine can often come off as a bad student- while he learns fine, and will follow a teacher's instructions to a T, he hates being corrected on stuff he feels he has a handle on, and can explode at any time if his anger reaches a boiling point- even breaking his seemingly icy 'shell' for a few moments, if need be. Because of Blaine's quick temper, thick-headedness and insistence on being right, Blaine has a reputation of seemingly being bipolar. He is very good at keeping his emotions hidden until they reach their final stages, and as thus can seem to ignite completely out of nowhere. Blaine does not get along very well with other people. Being a sort of closed-off genius, he doesn't take other people's opinions seriously if they aren't in an immediate position of authority, and as such can be extremely condescending to people that try to talk to him on any level above his 'too cool' personality layer. He's often entirely dismissive to people that he knows are wrong, but doesn't want to spare the time correcting, not even bothering to talk to them except for a condescending smile, and perhaps a pat on the head. When it comes to training, Blaine's qualities shine through. He initially tries to be stylish and cool, which breaks apart if the challenge before him seems interesting; when that happens, a switch is flipped that changes him to tactical mode, sending his pokemon into reckless, if ingenious schemes to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat... even if logic should say otherwise. When Blaine gets fired up in this manner, it is immediately noticeable as he begins moving frantically, yelling and making other sort of loud gestures people wouldn't expect from his usual persona. Blaine can hold grudges for a very long time, and detests talking about personal things he doesn't want to speak about, to the point of walking away from a conversation that takes that direction. He dislikes anything being said about his family -good or ill- and even moreso hates comparisons to any of them. If forced into a confrontation, he talks in icy, clipped sentences, and seems to retreat even farther into his shell- almost as if he's 'cooling off', as opposed to burning up, when he's involved with topics he DOES like. Bio: Blaine was the sixth child born to the most recent generation of the Cinnabar Family. Descended from ancient baronies ingrained deeply in Kanto's history, the Cinnabars were among the founding members of the Island, and funded most of the initial colonization effort -eventually leading to the settlemend being named after them, in appreciation. Though much of the Cinnabar fortune and prestige diluted across the decades, his family was still considered perhaps the 'most noble' of anyone living on the relatively small island. It was because of this excellent pedigree that all of his siblings were encouraged to enter academia. The eldest and second youngest of his older siblings entered medical practice, and became well-respected doctors- the later one of the few great brain surgeons off of Kanto's coasts, in a time when such operations are rather risky and carry significant danger to them. The remainder of his brothers and sisters became businessmen, lawyers, politicians -all of them geniuses in their fields-, leaving him with a veritable mountain on his back in terms of expectations. He was given almost complete free reign to what he wanted as a child, so long as he kept up on the significant amount of private schooling and tutoring he was given. His parents, however, were dismayed to find that he preferred playing around with the family pet Vulpix to organizing algorithms. While this was initially negligible as a child, it soon became apparent that Blaine's interest in school tapered off sharply as he aged, to be replaced with a fascination with pokemon. His parents, though disappointed, started to get the impression he'd go into the field of Pokemon Biology- an unorthodox route to Professorship perhaps, but they cared little as long as it led to a job in a prestigious University. For a short while, they supported his choices, encouraged him to study in biology and the other hard sciences, and dropped hints to his siblings that they should be acting as roll models for their younger brother... but it was all, ultimately, for naught. Blaine had no interest in becoming a university professor. Though he had significant talent, and even interest, in the field of Pokemon Biology, he found a laboratory too confining. In the fields, the open air, when he could interact with live pokemon was where he found his calling- where he could see them in their natural habitat, and interact with humans. Though he had his eye vaguely on a degree in Pokemon Biological Science, he considered it a subgoal in comparison to his true calling- Pokemon Battling. When he told his parents he desired to go to Trainer's School rather than proceeding immediately to University, they were shocked. They tried to persuade him to change his mind -several times- but, hiding beneath his sunglasses, he tuned out their complaints, their cries, and their demands that he stand up and choose a career worth the Cinnabar Name. When it seemed they'd lost the battle entirely, they had an abrupt change of heart. If they couldn't stop their son from becoming a ruffian Pokemon Trainer, they'd at least make sure he was the BEST of his kind. As Blaine intended to take on his journey with nothing but a few pieces of clothes, some outdated equipment, his allowance and the kit of the family Vulpix as his partner, they intended to supply him with state-of-the-art tech, private tutor sessions with highly advanced trainers -perhaps even a gym leader-, and of course only the strongest selection of pokemon. Blaine turned down it all, seeking to cut all ties with his family- with the exception of the Magby they offered. Though it was an almost mechanically-perfect picture of pokemon breeding, he found it had a sort of spunk he liked- and a bond was formed almost instantaneously. As Blaine leaves for Trainer School, he doesn't intend to ever return to his other life. As far as he's considered, he never belonged there. Other: Nero has a small pair of sunglasses that he wears only on special occasions -to reduce the chance of them being damage. Her shoes are plain white sneakers, which seem to have paint splattered in different and random places. The top is pretty simple, ranging from different colors and more than often being short sleeved. While she doesn’t care for accessories – other than her head bands - around her neck is a ring that was threaded through a plain piece of string. Noriko doesn’t really find interest in keeping up with every fashion trend that comes out, but certain things do catch her eye. She enjoys wearing dresses on her down time, the colors often being mild as to not draw too much attention to herself. In rocky regions she switches her skirts with pants, as to not mess up her legs too much just in case she falls. Religion/Ideology: N/A Personality: Noriko isn’t your typical girl – or at least not when you compare her to every other girl you may see. True she wears the skirts, and dresses, but even then she is forever a little tomboy. She’d be the first person to run headfirst into a fight to defend the one being beat on. Nori is very energetic and enthusiastic; somehow always having energy to do whatever it is that she needs to do and then some. Never one to run from a pokemon battle or a challenge, she is a headstrong, confident and strong individual. Though she is very energetic, most people are surprised when she is actually serious because one thing becomes apparent – She is smart! Nori has both photographic and phonetic memory, and it was because of this rare trait that she is considered a genius. But she keeps that to herself, because her fear is that people will think that Nori thinks that she is better than them. So instead she acts clueless about a lot of things – though sadly, she really is oblivious to a lot of things especially the opposite sex. One thing about Noriko that is blatantly obvious is that she is a pokemon lover. She is convinced that no one loves pokemon as much as she does, and believes that all pokemon – though scary, mean and strange looking – are special and should be treated with kindness. Though just because she believes that doesn’t mean it always come off that way; a good example being ghost pokemon. It takes her a while to warm up to a ghost pokemon, as her first reaction is to scream and either run or hide behind the nearest thing. And for all of her supposed confidence, she acts like a scared mouse when in dark places often clinging to the nearest person or holding her pokemon closely. Noriko loves to swim in her down time, and has a tendency of falling asleep in the water. Another common pastime of hers is climbing trees and falling asleep in them; though that normally ends with her falling out of the tree. Nori is a very kind hearted girl, and will often stop whatever she was previously doing to help out a pokemon that may be in need. Some may consider her a nerd, because she has memorized the entire Pokéncyclopedia, but she always counters with a grin and says “What can I say, I love pokemon.” Bio: Noriko grew up in Pewter city, to a mother who was a real knowledge buff – A.K.A “Book worm” – and a father who attempted becoming a pokemon master when he was younger. Nori was an only child up until she was 15, and her parents had a baby boy; however up until then, she never had anyone to play with except for Vulpix. Volpix had been when her ever since she was a baby, but Volpix had actually once belonged to her father; the cute fire-type pokemon being his first and soon to be Noriko’s first. Volpix and Noriko became fast friends, and Volpix was often seen anywhere Noriko was; and on the rare times that she wasn’t Noriko was sure to be close by. Noriko’s bond with Volpix was so strong that her parents often wondered if they understood each other; or so that’s what it seemed, as the two would hold long conversations. Volpix wasn’t the only pokemon Noriko interacted with. Her mother worked for the Pokemon Center, and on the days where she would accompany her mother, Nori was often helping her take care and treat the pokemon. Helping out her mother, gave Noriko the opportunity to learn and see a lot of different pokemon. It wasn’t until Nori turned 10 did a little girl moved to Pewter city. The new girl always seemed to carry a little pichu with her as if it was a stuffed toy. It didn’t take long for the two to meet and become fast friends, though the fact that they both were attached to their family pokemon. Noriko and Sam – the little girl’s name – quickly became friends and the two of them were seen everywhere together, and when they were in school they were never separated. Sadly the time when they would be separated was quickly approaching. During the dead of the night a fire was started in the neighborhood, the origin being inside the house and the culprit was unknown. Noriko was 12 at the time, and was awoken by all of the commotion outside. By the time Noriko and Volpix – the pokemon often slept in the same room – were outside the flames reached high in the sky bathing the night sky in an orange light. It only took seconds for Noriko to realize that it was her friend, Sam’s house, and she ran over to the fire. Half the neighborhood, her parents and the fire department was already there, the latter already attempting to sooth the fire. Nori could hardly see what was going on, and could only pray that her friend and her family would be safe. When the fire was finally doused, and the survivors were counted there were only two; Sam and Pichu. Unfortunately, Sam had inhaled too much of the fire’s fumes and died three days later from severe lung cancer. With Pichu’s family gone, he would have been released into the wild but Noriko couldn’t allow that to happen to Sam’s pokemon. So with her family’s permission they took Pichu into their family. Years later, after graduating high school with top marks, she is going to become a pokemon trainer. She usually keeps all the buttons of her blouse buttoned, except for the top button. Tied to her neck by a thin chain is a small spirit tag used for warding off malevolent spirits. The tag is very worn and made of bamboo strip paper. This doesn’t ward any better than if it were written on another medium, but it’s the thought that counts. There is a second chain that she doesn’t wear often; it was gifted to her by the spirits of Lavender Tower. It is a long spirit tag made of pure obsidian, held by a chain of some black metal. Inscribed on the tag is a wish for her safety and the blessing of the spirits. A rare gift. Her shoes are a pair of heels which are cut slightly shorter, to remain about 2 cm above the ground. This allows her to travel more easily in them. They don’t even stop her from running. They are black, naturally. She wears white socks with them, which is actually kind on unattractive really. For formal occasions she will use the underlying wiring of the skirt to keep it up, and she will wear a more formal blouse made of silk. It is coloured purple like her skirt, and has a black flame pattern as a trim. The sleeves reach down to her hands, which, for formal occasions be gloved with black silk gloves. Religion/Ideology: Yūreism Personality: Due to her captive lifestyle, Lyla stays quiet at best. More preferring to stay in the dark and learn, she won’t be able to warm up to other’s well, something Myst understands completely, as he usually stands by her and frightens off other people. She greatly enjoys reading horror stories and frightening ghost stories, which she doesn’t find frightening at all. If she does talk to people, it can be quite frightening at first due to her knowledge of spiritualism and thoughts about what lies beyond the grave. She one day hopes to write a horror story that will end all horror stories. She doesn’t know what brings on this idea, but she still hopes to keep the promise she makes. She dislikes services, having been forced to put up with so many she skipped them as much as possible. However, as much venom as she can have for the heavily religious, her most desperate yearning is to go to the Kimono Festival, so much that she would quite literally count down the hours and minutes to it when she didn’t have anything else to do. Her greatest fear is that after she has finished her Trainer Schooling that she will be dragged back to Lavender Town in order to tend to the Ghost Pokemon there. Speaking of the Ghost types; despite practically living amongst them she didn’t want to be known for training them. To this end she will proclaim to anyone that asks what she will train that she will be the greatest Poison Trainer ever, a promise clearly shown by her bows. During the night before going to bed, she prays to the spirits of Lavender Tower, and she prays to her family, thanking them for allowing her to make her own choice. She goes so far as to sleep with the bamboo tag underneath her pillow. Despite not getting on too well with humans, Lyla feels very at home with Pokemon, preferably Ghost and Dark types. She feels she has an understanding with them, as they do not usually show her ill will when she speaks to or meets them. In moments of panic she will pray using the Obsidian Tag, which seems to calm her as well as any Ghost, Dark and Psychic types around her. Bio: Lyla was born in Lavender Town, more specifically Lavender Tower. Her mother went into labor whilst praying at the graves of her previous Pokemon. Unable to be moved, Lyla was born on the fourth floor of Lavender Tower, unfortunate for the one who had to clean up after. This birth was considered a blessing for Lyla, as it would seem the spirits had deemed Lyla to be their avatar. This blessing proved to sour Lyla’s disposition to Ghost types a little, as she was birthed in the same place they were, and boy did her family let her know that fact. Lyla was treated special by the people of Lavender town, due to her coincidental birth. Whenever she was around they always treated her well and made excited conversation that, as a child Lyla could not understand. She never left Lavender, as it would anger the spirits to have their avatar abandon them. As she grew up at home she was home schooled by her parents. This soured her disposition a little more, as she couldn’t even take five steps out of Lavender before being rushed back there. This prevented her from even going to the Kimono Festival at Maiden’s Peak. Whilst she was left at home with her parents, her siblings left with their Aunt and Uncle for the celebration. She remained bitter over that fact for a long while. Lyla grew up with her mother, father, an older brother and a little sister. Her parents, whilst not as totally devout to the faith as the other families living in Lavender, treated each of their children equally. For her first few years Lyla didn’t notice the difference between the ways the people of Lavender treated her contrary-wise to her siblings. She did begin to notice after the people insisted she stand next to the Priest during services at age Six. She began to figure out things more by listening to the adults, their excited conversations were clearly important. She occasionally went to her brother to ask about the things, but failed to notice the bitterness in his words. When she was ten, she truly began to realize her position in Lavender. Soon, the Priest ended each service by asking Lyla for their blessing. She had become some form of saint to them; their avatar to the spirit world. Soon, this caused the poor girl to abstain from leaving the house at all. She kept herself in her room, devoting herself to studying by correspondence. She began to skip service after service after service. Paranoia amongst the locals began to form; small accidents were blamed on spirits angered by their avatar. To put them at ease, Lyla began to vicious cycle all over again. To appease them more, she began to make daily visits to Lavender Tower, in order to communicate with the spirits there. They allowed her passage in the tower and seemed to react violently to those who would disturb her. She spent much time studying on the top floor of the Tower, with only the ghosts to keep her company. She spoke with them, despite not understanding their responses. It seems her constant visitations to the Tower worried her family, as it seemed she was going there just to please people. Lyla didn’t say much to them, she just continued studying in the Tower, ignoring the Services again. This didn’t bother the people, as they believed Lyla was past services and was ready to work with the spirits. They didn’t get that chance to recruit her, as she had finished her studies and was ready to leave Lavender at age seventeen. Her captive life lead her to study geography extensively, her desire to know beyond her town consumed her. Day after day she read about each town, despite the books behind a decade old. Whilst the knowledge contained in the books was backward, just knowing there was a world beyond made her happy. Thanks to the spirits of the Tower, she worked up the courage to ask her parents if they would allow her to join the Trainer School on Cinnabar Island in order to become a full-fledged trainer. Her studies by correspondence had earned her a High School degree after all. They agreed, so Lyla left Lavender with her parent’s blessing and the blessings of the Tower’s inhabitants. After making her final prayers in Lavender Tower, a lone Gastly followed her out. She had spent a great deal of time with this particular Gastly, it was the first one to welcome her to the Tower. It opened its mouth and gifted Lydia with a rare obsidian spirit tag, seemingly made by the Ghost Pokemon. And Seeing the Gastly’s intent to see Lyla through with her schooling at the Trainer School, and due to the laws of Yūreism, Lyla caught it, making the Gastly known as Myst her guardian spirit and her first Pokemon. She took a few nervous steps out of Lavender, and for the first time in her life, no one had stopped her. Her parents went with her to make sure she got to the boat that would take her to Cinnabar safely. During her time spent in the Tower, Lyla became desensitized to the macabre horror of death. That aside, her sheltered life and lack of social expertise makes her a fairly nervous public speaker and klutzy conversationalist when it comes to known spiritualistic things. Master Red
Name: Amaya (Maya) Kurosawa Age: 18 Gender: Female Money: 700 Appearance: - Height: 166cm/5’4” - Weight: 56kg/145lbs - Body Type: Thin - Complexion: pale and fair - Hair Color and Hair Style: She has long straight black hair that reaches her breasts.
Inventory:] 2 Potion 1 Antidote 1 Paralyze Heal 2 Pokéball 1 Pokéflute
Pokémon:
Name: Medea Species: Murkrow Gender: Female Ability: Insomnia Personality: Medea is quite a proud pokémon that thinks she’s slightly better than anyone else. I don't understand his height (ft+inches part) it say he's 5'7" and then it says 67in after? Why did you put 170.2 cm? round it up or down, in your case you should round it down to 170. Also, if he's 170 cm and weighs 54.5 kg I doubt he would be of an average build (especially since he's a male). I am 179 and way 59-60kg IRL and I'm quite skinny, not someone you would say average build to. Please write the Personality part in proper sentences because it's very choppy and awkward. I also want you to spell and grammar check it as I saw some mistakes. It says he's not a destructive person and yet you also state he's a pyro? That is very contradicting! He was hit with a chair as a child and yet he was neither bullied nor had an unstable family environment with an abusive parent? He follows regism (Regism NOT RegisAm) and you state that he's a strict believer as well, yet he loves and aspires to train one of the very types of pokémon that regists themselves boycott. And his favorite pokémon is Moltres!? CONTRADICTIONS YET AGAIN! Also, how would an Eevee show that it wishes to evolve into a Flareon? The bandana is not an indicator because I highly doubt the Eevee went to the mall and bought one himself because he wants to show off that he aspires to become a flareon one day. the moveset spoiler for your eevee has a messed up tag. I'll give you one chance to fix your character, because I'm nice. You made so many errors and weird choices that I kind of wanted to dismiss it directly. Yes I'm a hardass but I am also fair. I'm only strict because I want this RP to have serious RPers and reduce the risk of me or one of the other hosts having to kick someone out later. Quiksilver
Awesome.
Name: Samuel (Sam or Sammy) Oak) Age: (I’m not a believer in having children drop out of school by the age of ten in order to train vicious monsters.) <- 16 Gender: Male Money: 800 Appearance: - Height: 5'8" or 172.72 cm - Weight: 146 lbs or 66 kg - Body Type: Slim - Complexion: Regular - Hair Color and Hair Style: Dark brown. Sam has hair that is cut short and cropped. The bangs that remain after this chopping are swept off the to side in a very fashionable manner, while the rest of his hair (i.e. sideburns and back) is clean and usually in place. - Eye Color: Light Blue - Scars, Tattoos and notable Birthmarks: N/A - Clothes: Sammy generally wears a polo with a green jacket over it when it is cold. The shirt is white and has black lining; when it is warm out, the jacket is thrown on, but when it is not cold, it is either in his black backpack or tied around his waist. Pants-wise, Sammy wears the typical blue jeans; add a pair of green running shoes and Sammy's outfit is completed. Religion/Ideology: N/A- Sam is a scientist through and through. Personality: Sam is kind and thinks of people and Pokemon of equals. Having spent all of his time training for this moment, Sam is quite knowledgable about the world around him- though, since he has not had any actual experience in this world, most of his knowledge is theoretical as opposed to practical. Analytical and clean-loving to an almost obssessive degree, Sam cannot stand dirt and the like, though he has come to terms with the fact he will be encountering a lot of it over the next couple of years as a Trainer. Despite what you might think, Sam has quite a keen intellect even when it comes to the opposite gender; when you have girl problems, Sam would be the one to come too- but for creating a fire or reading a compass, you would want to completely avoid his advice. Bio: Sam was born in Pallet Town, where he was raised by a single father, who, despite being a scientific researcher, still managed to find time for his only child. Sam's memories of childhoods are generally happy ones, as Sam was often taken by his father on scientific missions into the wild, which sparked Sammy's love of Pokemon. Often conflicted on whether or not to follow his father as a Pokemon Professor or a Trainer or a Watcher, Sammy decided to take his close friend Agatha's advice and pursue all three; studying for three different professions led Sam to quickly amass knowledge and smarts, and becoming so smart he skipped a grade and graduated high school at age 16, he decided to go to the Pokemon School on Cinnabar Island to further his knowledge. When he finally opens up, Seth reveals himself to be kind and fearlessly loyal, ready to go to the ends of the PokeWorld for the ones he loves. He also is the one to cheer up people who are down; this is usually conducted through funny stunts he does, since it's hard for Growlithe to produce sounds that are not variations of his own name. Also, due to being a Growlithe, Seth is a bit impatient and reckless; it would not be wise to keep this dog waiting. Other: Seth has a small red-and-white hankerchief tied around his back, left foot.
Move-set] 1. Bite 2. Roar 3. Ember 4. The True Ace Attorney
That's got to be the longest amount of time I've ever spent on a character app. Though to be fair, half of it was actual Pokémon stuff at the same time which doesn't allow for easy writing. At least I fleshed out a character.
Name: Sophie Mariness Age: 16 Gender: Female Money: 1400 Appearance: - Height: 5'11"/177.5cm - Weight: 10st 7lbs/ 66.8 kg - Body Type: Thin - Complexion: Pale - Hair Color and Hair Style: Straight, shoulder-length brown hair. - Eye Color: [s]LAZAH BEEM RED![/s] Brown - Scars, Tattoos and notable Birthmarks: Small, healed surgical scar on her left shoulder as well as a small triangular scar just beneath it. - Clothes: Quite plain. Inventory: 2 Poké Balls
Name: Ringo Species: Roggenrola Gender: Male Ability: Sturdy Personality: Ridiculously attached to Sophie. Due to the care it received from her, it views her as a motherly figure and follows her wherever she goes. Because of it's obviously low speed, it doesn't exactly do well when it comes to running. Other: It has it's own little trolley that it sits while travelling long distances quickly. It was made to alleviate a lot of it's weight so it doesn't weigh Sophie down. She uses it often and hasn't had problems with it.
Move-set] Tackle Harden Headbutt

Master Red
@hoepster: I'm going to consult with my co-hosts before I make a decision, you'll know sometime tomorrow. @lux: I can't accept you as your character has a Porygon. The True Ace Attorney
So... What can we expect in this RP anyways? Action? Explosions? Romance sub-plots? Drugs? Torture? Murder? Random adventuring? Planned out adventuring? Okay, ignore the drugs, torture and murder bit, but what of the others? Considering you've set it at PG15, it's not like they're completely ruled out unless you say so... Anyway, there's something I want to actually address. I was looking through the accepted apps when I noticed Naimo's character, Regiana. I'm pretty sure the weight should be 85kg, not 85lbs. If it was 85lbs, their health would be at serious risk. That's like 6 stone or something. Zombie-skinny. PS: Actually, don't ignore the drugs, murder and torture bit. Most of the anime I've got on DVD that's marked as a 15 have most of those things. Comes with the territory, I guess. If it's 15 it's going to have at least 1 of the following: Violence 'Strong' Language Scenes of a sexual nature Heavy drug reference/use
Master Red
@Lux: Yeah it's a lot, but it's needed when you turn a fictional world back a couple of decades ^^* Your pokémon app is still off as you forgot to change some of it. I highly doubt you have a growlithe that knows conversion, conversion 2 and psybeam xD also, it said Delta somewhere instead of Seth. @Ace: I don't want to give away too much about the RP itself but I can tell you that we have planned out the adventure in a very detailed way (even having planned out outlines for future Arcs in the RP) but don't worry you will have "free modes" activated every now and then. I set the PG to 15 to avoid young inexperienced RPers that think this is exactly like the Anime and Games. Another reason for it is that I want characters to be able to have relationships (you wont have sexscenes though, it's PG15, not M rated.. although you can hint that things of that nature has happened), harsh language is something you can use without much of a second thought (which is good when you have angry teenagers because we like to swear ;D) and there will be a fair bit of violence (mostly pokémon related ones but still, battles are far more dangerous and bloody in this RP than in the Anime and Games). Also, if you wish, you can let your characters get drunk and stuff (I don't encourage them to be drunk at all times but they are allowed to due to the PG) I'll ask naimo about it, and I'll ask her to add in both metric and imperial system of measurement/weight. She could also have accidentally missed a 1 before the 8.

fenrir
Name: Braylon (Cage) Penner Age: 18 Gender: Male Money: None at the minute. Appearance: - Height: 6’2/187cm - Weight: 164lbs/74kg - Body Type: Well-built - Complexion: Lightly-tanned - Hair Color and Hair Style: Well brushed dark brown hair. Master Red
@Lux: Accepted, we are going to remove Helping Hand from Growlithes moveset though as it learns that move at level 15 and we want to try to keep all pokémon around level 5-10 in the beginning. I realize I forgot to add this in the rules now and I'm sorry for that, but this is why we will be the one to correct the mistake, we will add in a move it learns before or at level 10 however when we change it around (we'll also fix the spoiler for the move-set ;D) @Fenrir: Accepted @Hydra: Yes you can have a young Blaine @Hotaru: We won't be 4kidsing anything up. Team Rocket will actually not be useless in this RP and we won't allow any character to"go Ash Ketchum" on us (i.e. be the very best, like no one ever was). We have stuff planned out and we might even "spice them up" a bit from the layout we already have to make them less PG-rated.. the PG15 was mostly so people will have more freedom when posting though so you don't have to read through your post five additional times to make sure your character didn't swear and it's just weird if you have a bunch of teenagers that thinks boys/girls are "icky" due to PG-rating. I think this Arc will be more PG than Arcs that have been planned for later though, it depends on the story we have planned for the arc basically so we had to put a higher PG-rating from the start to avoid awkwardness later on
