I'm thinking that those three are the most well-known merely because most of the anime people actually watch get scooped up by one of those 3. You could even argue that those are the "Big 3" companies for English dubs, much like how Naruto, One Piece and Bleach are the "Big 3" manga, regardless of the quality level of any given member of said "Big 3".
