Why was Magic Changed to Spell?

Recommended Posts

"Actually, what happened was UDE (claiming on Konami's behalf) tried to copyright Magic Card to refer to YGO cards (thinking they could pull one over). This was in obvious and direct conflict with Wizards who has been FINE with them using Magic Card in the game UNTIL THAT. Wizards sued the copyright claim away and UDE/Konami changed to Spell Card ONLY on the TCG side. It's still Magic Card on the OCG side (and note Magic the Gathering is in every Asian country and popular). This is also the reason for the very overdramatic renaming of Magic Ruler to Spell Ruler. It was actually rather purposeless. It's done now though, Spell Card here, Magic Card in OCG."

To be honest, the change makes as much sense as saying Yugioh cant have FIRE as an attribute, as Pokemon already has that type.

........

And then Psychic-Type monsters came about.

To be honest, everyone pretty much god over the change after the first few months it was out.

But the name of the card game is not FIRE. I mean, the game is called "Magic The Gathering". Its a little different than just a "attribute" being similar. In any case, I don't see the issue. Companies are just crybabies.

Yes yes, but that still doesn't stop them from complaining about petty things like this, so they are still a bunch of crocodile tear spewing crybabies :o

I don't think that was the case. Based on what Zero said it was because UDE was trying to "copyright Magic Card to refer to YGO cards." You don't do that when MTG had been called Magic cards for close to a decade at that point. Remember, they are still Magic cards in OCG land and MTG is just as huge there as it is here so it seems like it has a lot more to do with the actions UDE was taking.

oi whatever happen to this beautiful world we lived in.

Trying to copyright a name regarding in card type was rather senseless moreover, what in the right mind of UDE attempt to do it? have they not realize that MTG existed over 12 (i think it was close to 14 or 15 years now*) and those cards were called "magic cards" for about that long?

Since MTG exist longer than YGO, it make sense they have the right and probably they had it copyright right off the bat. However normally what make more sense if it's a name that have bigger role in business but what do i know. Doesn't it make you sad or pissed off when there have been lack of common sense?

I have a feeling someone made a deck that ran a bunch of copies of:

68.jpg

And was all: "Its a magicv card, guise hurr hurr hurr"......Shorty after, they issued the re-name to Spell cards.

It showed a picture of a squirrel for me (coolstuff's website does that). I would run 4 copies of Ponder in my deck and like 7 Water Energies in a 7r011.d3k.

It was at best copyright lawsuit avoidance or something.

Magic started back in 93 so it's nearing it's turning 18 this year. Yea, it's old.

And yea, it was just stupid of them to try to pull that.

It's cause if they made pot of duality a magic card, people would start selling ponder's for 180 bucks (owait)

You have it backwards. If Ponder was made into a yugioh card it would start selling for $180.
