Tentacruel
I voted Yellow, since that was my first one, but IMO, they're ALL the best.
burnpsy
Objectively, since nobody really plays for the story, the game gets better every generation.
Yang Xiao-Long
SoulSilver. I won't know about Black/White until I actually get one of the two.

-Griffin
[s]Pokemon Snap![/s] In seriousness, I'd say Fire-Red/Leaf-Green. Possibly Crystal. I'm not a big fan of the newer mechanics/pokemon/stuff. Then again, I'm a nostalgia junky with an obsession for things being concise, so yeah. Mehmani
Impossible to decide. Gold and Silver have so much meaning to me and they have fantastic soundtracks, but R/B/Y were the only games that really scared me.
.Leo
Emerald. Hands down the best game Pokemon has produced. Good job Nintendo, you made a masterpiece for storyline and competitive players alike!
Toffee.
Red/Blue, IMO, were the best. (Mostly for the glitches and other lulz stuff) MissingNo glitch, being ontop of trees, ability to find any Pokemon via surfing, etc, etc.. And it was one of the only real 'serious' games, as the player ends up killing Gary's Raticate.

Twig
lol@ people keeping track. Third Version should be with the old two versions, and remakes should be with originals. I voted for Platinum because I'm not a nostalgia fanboy, and the 4th gen was fun. I'll probably like Black/White, but I have never played it. O_o
You battle the Raticate on the S.S.Anne You later find Gary without his Raticate. You THEN find him at the Ghost Tower in Lavender Town. .....4Chan only added a story to what already existed, in order to get the point across. Flame Dragon
The problem with gen 1 was so many things about it were broken. The moves and the type power balance really hold the game back imo, but this is to be expected in the first game of the series. The games are still great, but looking back they had their problems. The 3rd gen was solid, but it's kind of forgettable with not any huge advances and only a handful of memorable pokemon. Edit: Why didn't I bring up abilities? I R SMART The 2nd has the best region imo and started to improve on the 1st short comings (like adding two types), and 4th had the biggest meta advances imo with the physical/special split and the many good moves, plus some good pokemon. For that reason 4th is my fav gen, and HG my fav game. And as a general note, everyone that complains about the 4th and 5th gen Pokemon designs should look at the 1st gen pokemon. .Leo
I really hate how people think Platinum is good. Anything GEN IV besides HGSS was trash. Like, they are entitled to their opinion and all, but I absolutely hated it. Storyline was long, boring and stupid. Why Emerald is not considered one of the best games is beyond me. Competetive Pokemon essentially revolves around the stuff 3rd gen added ATM.
I really hate how people think Platinum is good.
