It was nine in the morning when Heero Tanaka's alarm went off. Not wanting to get up quite yet, he accidently turned it off, thinking he activated snooze. A little over an hour later, he woke up, looking at the time: 10:14 A.M. "Oh my Winged Kuriboh!" Heero shouted. "I'm late for the tournament!"

Haven only had one Game Shop, which meant only one place for tournaments. Unfortunitly, Heero lived an hour away from it, and was only twelve, so any chance of driving was eliminated. To make matters worse, his parents were both killed when he was five, and had no where to go, as Heero's only family was a dog who died some time ago. Despite this, he lived in his old house, and wasn't charged with bills or anything. By the time Heero arrived at the Game Shop, he was a half hour late, and ran inside.

Luck was on his side, as Heero stepped in just in after the introduction and welcoming. "I'm not late am I?" Heero asked. Silence. "Please tell me I'm still eligible for participation..."

A man spoke up. "Heero Tanaka, right?"

Heero nodded. "Yeah; that'd be me."

"Your lucky. There was an odd number of people without you. Your in," the man said.

"Thanks Orion!" Heero said, both relieved and thrilled. This was his first tournament. This was his moment of truth. After a while, an announcer began revealing the tournament brackets. "Round One. Raizin Otaru up against...Heero Tanaka!"

Silence. Raizin was a three-time champion of this tournament. Surely Heero knew he wasn't going to win. But Heero strided up to the arena, unaware of the challenge that faced him. He didn't care. He just wanted to duel, and have fun. After all, that's what it was all about, as far as Heero was concerned.

Raizin stared at Heero's brown hair and eyes combo. Heero stared right back. "Lets have a great duel!" Heero said, completely thrilled about this duel. If he won, he'd be on cloud nine. If he lost...well...he refused to lose.

"Duel!" they both exclaimed. Raizin raised his duel disk and Heero followed. The two then drew their five cards.

Raizin smiled smugly. "You can start, boy. I'll finish you off quickly."

Heero smiled, blinded by his care free lifestyle to realize Raizin had this duel calculated already. "Alright, here goes, Raizin!" he said, drawing his card.

"I summon to the field Dragon Spirit Swordsman, in attack mode!"

ATK: 1600
DEF: 1200

"I'll set three cards and end!"

Raizin laughed. "That's it kid? Let me show you how it's done!" Raizin drew his card. "I'll summon Thunder Pulse Dragon!"

ATK: 1800
DEF: 0

"When I summon it to the field, I can add a Thunder Dragon to my hand! Now I use my Thunder Dragon's effect; I can discard it to add two more to my hand! And I'm afraid your about to be shocked at this move, because I use my Spell Card Polymerization! I fuse my Thunder Dragons with my Thunder Pulse Dragon, whose name is treatead as Thunder Dragon!"

Heero's mouth dropped open. He knew this wasn't going to end well. On Raizin's first turn, he brought out his trump card. "Lightning illuminates the night sky as thunder roars in deafening impact! A storm rages on as Three-Headed Thunder Dragon takes the stage!"

ATK: 3000
DEF: 1600

"Now I use his effect! Even though my Thunder Pulse Dragon is in the Graveyard, it's effect still resumes! So while all the fusion material monsters are in my Graveyard, I can destroy all monsters you control!

Heero knew this was bad as he watched his swordsman disappear. But Heero's faith in himself, and in his deck wouldn't disappear like his swordsman. "Now, my Three-Headed Thunder Dragon attacks!" Raizin smiled.

Heero: 1000
Raizin: 4000

"I'll end. Be grateful you weren't finished yet, kid."

Heero, though down, wasn't broken. He drew his card. "I set a card and summon my Dragon Spirit Guardian, in attack mode..." If this didn't work, Heero's big chance would end in a big failure. "Turn end."

Raizin drew his card. "I'll use my monster's effect to destroy your monster!"

Heero formed a smile. "I use my Trap Card, Dragon Spirit Protection! When a card effect would destroy one or more of my monsters, I can negate that card and send a face-up Dragon Spirit monster I control to the Graveyard!"

Raizin laughed. "Either way, your monster would be lost, and you'd lose the duel! End him, once and for all Three-Headed Thunder Dragon!"

Silence filled the air as devisitating lightning was about to strike Heero...
