They both have their ups and downs.

For the most part, I prefer newer metal. Mostly because genres like Tech Death, Melo Death, and Symphonic Black just keep getting better.

This, most definitely.

Although, metal from the 80s helped develop and inspire metal from the 90s-00s, so sometimes it's nice to look back on where a lot of it originated. Some of it actually has better musicialship, and is more original than a lot of the metal nowadays.

So this isn't really the best argument, IMO.

Some stuff today you could already call classics (Messhuggah, Necrophagist, Suffocation, Splipknot even) because they are so popular. What's cool is that bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Metallica, Megadeth, Ozzy, and Anthrax still release stuff with influences from newer bands, which is pretty sweet. New stuff today (original stuff) like Sybreed, Messhuggah, Deathcore and Metalcore have unique sounds, Alternative rock bands like Paramore and Oasis, you can still find unique death metal (Fleshgod Apocalypse and Braindrill both have a really 'thick' sound, a real heavy, weighty sound) and I like it.

I'd call it a draw because it's all based on opinion. You could get a guy that was born in 1979 and listened to Black Sabbath, Metallica, and Anthrax his whole Teenage life. This guy obviously would vote for older metal. The kid that was born in 1993, like me, who was exposed to all of those bands plus others that came around (At The Gates, Cannibal Corpse,Carcass.) Would probably vote for those because that's what he was exposed to.

You can't simply just say that the 80's metal is bad, it created the genre as we know it today. In my opinion, these new metalcore bands and s*** don't have a change against classics like Slayer and Megadeth, but I do appreciate some of the new artist's too.
