For a First attempt is isn't too bad.
Just try experimenting with different shapes, and contrast and what not.

I think (and I'm only assuming, I may be wrong) he is trying to say learn how to apply lighting, and how it works. Using lighting, and applying it are 2 different things really. To apply it is to get the corresponding shapes (nerfs and nerbs) to react with and reflect the light, which will in turn give off a more realistic and 3d effect. The lighting in your attempt is pretty random.

For your first attempt, you have acquainted yourself with the interface pretty nicely. Well done. For me, C4D was pretty difficult because I found it more complex than other 3D software, so props to you sir.

Something like that but I meant that he should use photoshop to learn proper lighting skills so it'll be easier for him on C4D or any 3D program.
Also a piece of advice. You don't get taught 4Dimensional skills, you find your own ways by experimenting and reading about what each tool does. Its the same as photoshop. Thats how I learned some 4D tricks and general photoshop.
