I'm hoping to update as often as I can and please, any comments please feel free to leave them!
I'm not scared of criticism and I'm expecting much of it.
The sun was quickly fading over the scorched sands that surrounded the small line of cotton tents and dimly lit campfires, leaving the intense heat behind and allowing the chill of the night to creep over the dozen figures that were picking away at a partially buried wall. The miners, dressed in white robes and wielding worn pickaxes, dripped with the sweat of another days work. As the work slowly began to stop, two figures walked slowly to the excavation site and stood offering their thanks to the workers. The tallest of the two stepped down into the reinforced trench and tapped lightly upon the golden yellow brickwork and a smile crossed his cracked lips as he turned towards the other man and spoke. “It seems that we are nearing completion, whatever is behind this wall is hollow soon Rick, soon we will know the secrets of this hidden gem” The man who had spoken was nearing his mid forties and had a shoulder length mane of grey hair, dried and broken by the year long excavation. Although he was heading towards old age, the man was still fit and composed himself as one would expect someone half his age would. Reaching over, the man grabbed a discarded pick and lifted it upwards, slamming the spiked end down onto the brickwork, causing cracks to erupt from around the point of impact and followed that by several more hits. As the man worked, the miners as well as Rick watched with patience, eager to see what they had been working for over the long and gruelling year and after a few more blows a circles of darkness appeared in the brickwork where the stone had been hacked away. Rick cautiously approached the trench and stared at the darkness, astounded that they had finally broken through. Turning towards the other, Rick spoke quietly. “We must wait until morning to enter the site Mr Kennil, I must consult my books and make sure we are to expect inside” The greying man gave a nod of agreement and slowly back away from the trench, heading towards the largest tent of the site.

Hours passed as the two men sat in silence, each flicking through books of various ages and languages, eager to find out what they could of the discovery and it was Rick who spoke first, pointing to a decrepit page of a particularly large book. “It says here that this is the temple of the Spell Weavers a ancient race of people who could wield various forms of magic. The Weavers were part of a great alliance between man and beast who joined together to rid the world of a creature known as Zenbrian. Zenbrian was a corrupt magician who studied the art of necromancy and planned to enslave the land with a army of one million lost souls” Without knowing, both men were now leaning towards the books, making sure that the sun was not making them tell wild tales. “Many fell in the war but eventually Zenbrian was defeated and his armies sent back to the underworld, but it cost the alliance their own lives” Rick shifted in his seat and adjusted the glasses that had been perched on the bridge of his nose. He wasn’t a particularly eccentric man as his glasses, short well kept hair and suits pointed out; even in the desert he had insisted on wearing a suit. His grey eyes scanned more of the text inked onto the page before turning to Mr Kennil “The rest tells of the dates in history and this tale dates back to before the pharaohs of Egypt, meaning if this is what we have found, we have stumbled upon a site older than time itself my good sir!”

Morning seemed to drag across the sky as both men continued to read as many books as the night would allow, broken from their trance only when the rays of dawns light filled the tents interior. It was in silence that the two men stood and gathered up torches, lanterns, books, cameras and all sorts of equipment that could record their first steps into this mystery. As they made their way out of the tent, no other form of life was up and the fires had all but burnt out. Rick and Mr Kennil stood at the opening, still as dark as it was those long hours ago. Clicking on his torch, Rick slowly manipulated his body through the hole and began to flick the beam of light back and forth across the walls of what seemed to be a long corridor. The greying man soon stepped besides him and also flicked his torch about “It is amazing Rick…” Together they walked forwards stopping only to take pictures of the carvings that covered the stonework of the walls and the ancient tools that lay scattered across the sand covered ground. After much milling about in silence, the two found themselves in a abnormally large room. Speaking in whisper, almost as if someone else could be inside, Rick turned to where he thought his partner would be “This hall would have some sort of lighting system, check the walls for fire brands or something similar” Although he was the complete opposite side of the man, Kennil nodded and moved off towards the side, letting his hands feel the walls and his torch flick up and down each section until a blinding light erupted around the room. Kennil turned quickly and saw Rick, a large silver disk in his hand that seemed to be reflecting light around the room to the hundreds that lined the ceilings. Both men could do nothing but stare as the room was now completely visible. Every inch of the room was carved with images and in the dead centre stood a golden alter that had fifteen boxes that were also made of gold upon them. Both men knew that this is what they were searching for, that this was the moment their names would fall into history. Approaching the alter, four eyes stared at the boxes and in unison, the men opened up the first box to reveal its contents.

The inside of the box was empty save a small sheet of silk that had been carefully wrapped around a rectangle object. Rick reached in and puller the package out, unfolding it with as much care that his trembling hands could utilise. As the material fell away, what was left in the mans hand shocked both of them. It was a pile of Duel Monster cards, dusty but in perfect condition. Yet again, the men had been shocked into silence as they looked at the pile, the brow of Kennil lowering and his cheeks turning a deep shade of red “What the hell is this Rick!?” he screamed, lifting his hand and knocking the cards from their place and across the room “You said that this place would hold riches we could only dream of! That untold history lay here, not some cards!” The mans voice had turned almost supersonic as his words faded and without another, he walked past the suited man and towards the opening that they had eagerly entered just an hour ago. Alone, Rick bent down and gathered up the cards, flicking them over as he did so but when he read that card names, it all slotted into place. The man began to frantically open the other boxes, and just like the first, each contained a Duel Monsters deck wrapped in silk and each deck contained the discovery that he wanted, the fate of the alliance. “They are Duel Monsters… The alliance wasn’t living things, but cards, they were played before the pharaohs” The man chuckled to himself and knew selected one of the decks, placing it in his pocket, the rest being placed inside their respective golden tombs. As he turned, several of the miners were standing, ready for their orders. “Ship these out of the temple at double pace and make sure they are ready for transport as quickly as possible”.

Rick oversaw the miners for a short while before making his way out of the ancient building where he was told that Kennil had stormed off in a rage, taking his belongings with him. Rick just nodded and dug a hand into his pocket, pulling out a small phone, lifting it to his ear. The voice on the other end caused a smile bigger than any discovery could create to cross the mans face “Yea Rae, I’m coming home and with a present for you too…” He said, patting the duelling deck in his pocket.
As the sun began to break over the already bustling Dekon city, the smell of bacon was drifting through the crisp air from a large house situated upon the hillside that overlooked the tall skyscrapers and small market stalls. A wrinkled hand gripped a glimmering fork, occasionally flipping the bacon that was sizzling slowly beneath a blue flame. The cook would occasionally lift his free hand and wipe away the sweat that the task was causing to form across the aged brow and run past the set of bushy, grey eyebrows. With a slight unease, the man stepped back from the food and tilted his head around the corner of a nearby doorway and called towards a set of stairs a few meters away. “Rae! Breakfast!” His voice losing none of its commanding nature despite the age that the man was suffering from. Returning his attention back to the bacon, Rick sat on a stool and watched the flames crackle and spit for a few more seconds before lifting the meat from its place and moving them carefully onto a waiting slice of bread. Before Rick could finish preparing the meal, his ears perked as the sound of his daughter, thundering down the staircase thudded throughout the house. With the arrival of Rae, the retired archaeologist didn’t need to do anything more so his body leant back against the chair and eyes closed whilst letting out a long breath of air. Rick was getting old and now it seemed that his life was slowly vanishing with each passing moment. Opening his eyes, the man smiled at the sight of Rae. She wasn’t anything like her father, inheriting most of her mothers features. The girl had raven black hair and emerald green eyes. Her form was covered in a tight grey tee and a white jacket with the sleeves rolled to her elbows. Her hips held up a pair of pants that were also white, black straps across her right thigh that held a deck box of the same colour. The girls slender fingers reached out and took the sandwich, gripping it between her teeth before grabbing the duel disk that was sat on the kitchens work surface. Removing the sandwich she planted a soft kiss on her fathers cheek “I’ll be home soon” With that the girl bounded once more out of the door and to the world outside.

Rae took her time as she walked, eating the breakfast slowly, watching her feet as the trudged along and towards the city below. The duel disk was now strapped to her arm and ready for a day of duelling. Stopping, the raven haired girl looked upwards at the small house and made her way up the drive, slamming a hand against the door. Although it was a rude way to knock, the door was answered with a smile. The boy standing in front of Rae was short and wore a blue, hooded jacket and extremely worn jeans, complete with rips and tears. His hair was dyed crimson read and hung loosely over his face in no particular style. “Hey Rae! Ready for some awesome action?” He said energetically. Rae responded with a simple nod and turned, walking back down the drive without a word, the boy following eagerly. The two walked side by side and as they approached the city exchanged small talk of decks, cards and strategies that they could use. Rae and Taka had been best friends since they were both small and being the same age of sixteen, they had spent many years together and never tired of each others company, but today was different. Looking up, Rae lifted a hand and pointed towards the deep blue banner that was blowing with the morning breeze. Taka followed the finger and felt his nerves begin to pulsate through his stomach. Today was the start of the biggest Duel Monsters tournament in many years and the two teenagers had both been given invites. The banner was adorned with some of the most famous monsters in the game and splashed across the centre were the words ‘Battle City: The next step in evolution’. Today the best friends would become each others competition and both wanted to come out on top. After a few minutes of contemplation, Taka looked down at his watch and reached for Rae’s hand, pulling her forward as he broke out into a sprint “Registration starts in ten minutes Rae!” With the news, Rae broke free of her friends grip and sprinted besides him with a grin.

Panting in unison, the two teenagers stopped and looked over the crowd of people that had gathered in the town square. The murmur of the crowd was almost deafening as they made their way through the various groups that had banded together and towards the large desk that was acting as registration. Taka arrived first and stood in front of a middle aged woman dressed in a plain black suit, complete with tie and cufflinks. Whilst still looking down at the list in front of her she spoke “Name?” Taka looked back at Rae who was motioning him to answer “Uh, Taka Muzami” With a bony finger, the woman ran through the list until she stopped, lifted the finger and looked upwards “OK Mr Muzami, here is your PDA and locator cards. Next!” she shrilled, shooing Taka aside. Rae stepped up and began to give her details. Taka quickly moved away from the crowd and sat himself down on a nearby wall, examining the PDA that he had been given. The device was small enough that it could sit comfortably in his palm and at the bottom was a open slot that he presumed the locator cards could fit into. Touching the screen the device lit up with several options flickering over the screen. “It records who you have duelled against and analysis the data from the locator cards you obtain by winning…” Rae said as she approached Taka, slipped her own PDA and cards into the back pocket of her pants. “Every Duelist has one, it is a sign that you’ve made it into the Pro circuit” Taka nodded and looked back down to the PDA, switching it off and following Rae’s example by slipping it into his pocket. Both teens turned their attention towards the stage that had been set up at the far end of the square as a tournament official stepped up to the microphone. “Attention Duellists! Please pay attention to the rules of Battle City”; This is what they had been waiting for and the two friends slowly made their way through the crowd as the official began to explain the rules. “Each of you have been given two Battle City locator cards, these contain the location of the tournament final but you will need six registered in your PDA to obtain it” Almost every person began to load their own cards into the silver devices, uploading the first two pieces of the puzzle “Due to the unusually high count of rare decks, your PDA has also been fitted with a card reader, simply point this at the hologram you wish to know about and the card will appear on your PDA screen. Each duel you must put up one locator card, the winner takes both cards at the duels end. That is all for now, but do not forget, the Battle City benefactor is watching always…” The announcer left the stage as Rae looked at Taka and held out a closed fist towards him. Taka, replied in kind by extending his own fist and slamming it against his friends “Honour and respect…” The said in unison before turning away from each other, slipping into the crowd.

Rae made her way through the crowd with a sense of urgency, knowing that if she wanted to have a comfortable start, then she would need to get away from the masses of people that were crowding the square. The girls thin frame managed to weave its way past the bodies, breaking free into a nearby alleyway. As her feet moved her further away, Rae reached a hand down to her pocket and pulled out the small PDA, pressing the power button and watching the screen illuminate as power began to surge through its innards. Her dept fingers quickly found the duellist list which she began to search through. Each face that she passed a small shake of her head followed until she found the person she was looking for. From the glowing device, Taka stared up towards her his information began to scroll beneath his portrait and with a few more clicks his deck type flashed onto the screen. It seemed that the deck that Taka used was also from the era of Rae’s own, before the pharaohs and it too had a rarity value of five stars, a rating that would make them prime targets of the duellists that had been named ‘The Rare Hunters’ from the first battle city all those years ago. Just as the raven haired girl turned the power off a several claxons began to sound around the city, signalling that the competition had begun. Quickly, Rae began to jog until she came to a small street that was bustling with people. She could see many were holding duel disks and even more were beginning their duels with fire in their eyes, each attack being brought down with the will to win at any cost. The girl was about to move again when she felt a shadow loom over her small figure and she knew that it was a duellist, she could feel it. With a swift turn, the teen raised her disk upwards and watched as it unfolded before her. The man in front of her was taller than any she had ever seen, his eyes deep blue surrounded by a shroud of black with age. His shaved head glistened in the sun whilst his body covered in a large, leather coat that reached the floor. His duel disk was already unfolded and the lights upon it blinking, almost edging her into the duel. The man held up a clear locator card and placed it onto the small slot on the centre of his disk “One locator card” Rae nodded and stepped backwards so that the space between them was big enough for a duel. In unison, both competitors drew five cards from their deck “Duel!”

“I’ll start!” Rae cried as her fingers quickly drew a sixth card to signal the beginning of her turn. The girl looked over each of her cards before picking one of the six and placing it on the field. “Ok! I’ll start by playing one monster in defence mode!” As the card was placed on the disk, a whirling of lights began from the devices underside, projecting the image of a horizontal card with its back to the sky on the field. Looking from her first move and then towards her opponent she nodded slowly “Your move” which the man replied with a quick draw of a card. Whoever this man was, he seemed much more used to the stress that tounaments like Battle City placed upon a player. His fingers flicked cards back and forth, flicking one forward onto his disk “Come forth, Vorse Raider! (1900/1200)” a evil looking monster materialised upon the field, wielding a two handed sword. The mask that adorned its head seemed to resemble eyes and each were fixed upon the facedown card in front of them. With a point of his hand, the man spoke “Vorse Raider! Show this girl why they fear me!” The fiend like monster ran forward and with a swing of its weapon, shattered the hologram of Rae’s card into pieces. “Well, you have activated the effect of my Alexia! When she is destroyed by battle, I can bring a Spell Weaver monster from my deck, onto the field!” Searching through her deck, Rae picked out a monster and placed it on the field. The monster that Rae had chosen began to form and his slender frame was draped with crimson red robes and a orange sash that twisted about his waist and shoulders. The spell casters raven black hair fluttered as four glowing white orbs began to circle his body. “This is Binsen, Fabled Spell weaver (1500/700)” The man began to laugh at the newly formed monster “His attack points are far to low to beat my monster… How did you ever end up in Battle City?”

Rae drew her card and gave a small grin towards her opponent “I’ll show you that power isn’t everything. Sometimes it helps if your monsters can do more than attack” Plucking a card from her hand, Rae slipped it into the slot that was used for Spell cards “You see those white orbs? That is my Weavers mana and by spending two of them, I can activate this spell!” The spell caster forced his hands forward and towards the opposing Vorse Raider, a surge of deep green energy slamming into the monsters chest causing it to stumble backwards from the spell. “Arcane Spell - Poison! It lowers the attack of your monster by five hundred points” (Vorse Raider - 1500/1200) As Rae watched the monsters attack lower, she suddenly felt the rush that she had each and every time she duelled, the rush that made her love this game more and more each time she experienced it. Slapping another monster on the field, it began to form next to her Binsen. This monster was male like the teenagers other, but his hair was grey and his body wrapped in purple robes, wrinkled hands gripping a golden staff, the four mana orbs appearing and like Binsen before him, began to circle his body. “Jericho, Elder Spell weaver (1800/800) and with his special ability, I can remove two of his mana to bring the Poison I used earlier back to my hand! I then remove the remaining two counters from Binsen to activate Poison, again!” Once more, Binsen forced the spell towards Vorse Raider, lowering its attack by another five hundred points (Vorse Raider 900/1200) “looks like I have the upper hand?” Rae flashed a grin and sent her monsters forward, Jericho destroying the enemy monster and Binsen attacking the mans life points directly with a bolt of purple energy. (Bald Man LP 1600/4000).

The man began to pant as his life points reached a critical level. The deep set eyes narrowed and lips parted into a snarl as he drew his card “You’re going down for that kid!” The man had picked Rae as she was small, female and looked a little lost, he wanted a easy win but it was now apparent that he had chosen wrong. As his eyes looked over the cards in his hand, sweat began to roll down the aged skin and the feeling of desperation had suddenly washed over him. Placing a spell card on the field, he picked the Vorse Raider he had played earlier and Summoned it in attack position “Monster Reborn! Now, Vorse Raider, take out her Jericho!” Rae braced herself as the creature surged forward and slammed its vicious sword into the purple robed monster, cutting it in two and taking 100 damage from the girls life points. “There! Now your pathetic monster is gone and your remaining one has none of those idiotic counters on it! How are you going to beat me now? Haha!” the manic look that had washed over the man was beginning to surface even more and Rae knew she had to defeat him this turn, or he could well beat her in his current state. As the girl drew her card she placed it on the field, causing yet another spell caster to appear before her. This monster was robed only from the waist, his skin a chalk blue with two sky blue orbs circling his body. “I’ll Summon, Cale, Fearless Spellweaver! (1100/0) and as long as he has any counters on him, he can attack you directly!” The monk like creature ran forward and leapt over the waiting Vorse Raider, slamming a holographic foot into the girls opponent, lowering his life points even further (Bald Man LP 500/4000). As Cale returned to his place on the field, the man began to laugh once more “I’ve still five hundred life points left girl, you can’t beat me” Rae nodded and revealed a spell in her hand, holding it towards her opponent “I’ll remove the two counters from Cale to activate the spell, Fira! This burns you for five hundred points of damage…” As Cale threw the flaming attack towards the man, he began to flicker from view as the duel ended and Rae was declared the winner. With a few steps forward, the teenager held out her hand and gave a wink as her opponent reluctantly handed over the locator card that he had put up as a wager.

Rae quickly made it her priority to get away from the area and so headed towards yet another alleyway, knowing that no one would be laying in wait, there wouldn’t be enough room to duel in there. With a sigh of relief the girl leant against a wall and slipped her newly acquired card into her PDA. As the device began to read the card Rae’s eyes closed “Keep focused Rae, just get to the finals”
Well. Well. Well.

Hey, it seemed good for some time. Until here:

Who in the hell will ever say something like this? This is obviousness for the two main characters, and if I were Rick I would never bother to say all this. Let's say I try to say "Battle Ox is good". Would I say "Battle Ox is good. Battle Ox is a Normal Monster Beast-Warrior and Earth, in Yu-Gi-Oh, with 1700 ATK"? Hell no.

So write it logically.

Well, Rick would say it... He is a scholar and he is driven by the secrets and stories of the races that passed. The story was not about cards, but about actual being that lived, I wouldn't have him explain details about cards. I wanted to set up the whole background of the story and by having him explain it was the only way I could think of doing it within the story without leaving people wandering "What the hell?" until much further on, what would you sugest putting down then instead?
Thanks for the comment.
