Darth Duelist
So yeah, read the title: What is the best Operating System?

An operating system (OS) is software, consisting of programs and data, that runs on computers and manages computer hardware resources and provides common services for efficient execution of various application software. For hardware functions such as input and output and memory allocation, the operating system acts as an intermediary between application programs and the computer hardware, although the application code is usually executed directly by the hardware, but will frequently call the OS or be interrupted by it. Operating systems are found on almost any device that contains a computer—from cellular phones and video game consoles to supercomputers and web servers. Examples of popular modern operating systems for personal computers are Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, and GNU/Linux.

An operating system is pretty much like a software that you use on your PC. The OS is probably the most important software and without it, well, your PC is crap. Its hard (if not impossible) to do things and open stuff. Well actually, if you don't have it installed, you can't access any programs (like Internet Explorer) and stuff like that. Operating systems are like Windows XP and Windows 7. You've probably heard of them.. so yeah

Personally, I'd go with Windows 7. Windows 7 is the latest and I like how it looks too. If you talk about what one is the fastest, its actually Windows XP. Windows Xp is faster than Win7 which is faster than Vista (Vista is sllooooow and waaay behind). Some people actually did some research and ran some big tests and stuff and they found out XP was fastest. See here for the tests: http://www.testfreaks.com/blog/information/windows-xp-vs-vista-vs-7/

Icy
Depends on what you use it for imo =/, as bad as Macs are their OS's are easy to use for the dreadfully casual user. Which pretty much means 90% of the Popular/Mainstream Music/Fad people. Linux is awesome for companies that make games etc. And Windows for everyone else. (It's a broad generalization and if I am incorrect please speak up kindly). For me, my preferred Operating System is Windows 7 or Vista (hush). But I couldn't say it's "the best". War Chess
Windows 7 definetly. Is faster, its better looking and that's all that matters.

See here: http://www.testfreaks.com/blog/information/windows-xp-vs-vista-vs-7/ Some people did tests to see what OS was the fastest, and Vista was the absolute slowest in almost every single aspect. Speedy is not a word to describe it...

Dark
I hated Vista so much. I mean, I'd use XP over Vista any day of my life. That said, I've grown a love-love relationship with XP, but now I've moved on to W7. So, I'd have to say Windows 7, but XP and Mac come in close second and third, respectively. War Chess
Vista sucks, its fast when the momory is practically empty. XP is kinda good, but its looks suck. So 7 wins in both speed and appearance.
Cin
Having had the chance of using Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows XP and Windows 7, its a tie between XP and 7 for me, I found them very both easy to use though 7 is missing some of the features I liked in XP (and its WMM is rubbish)
Ovedrive
Using XP. I don't really like Vista. 7 is better then Vista....but XP is better then 7, imo. O_o
Yasu
Windows 7. Relatively limited. Doesn't let me play old games. Sometimes looks like it was designed for kids with ADHD. Ugh.

XP doesn't look the same, even after I installed a ton of stuff to make XP look like 7. But XP is the fastest.

Many PC games are made for windows, because windows is the most common. Mac OS, I just hate because its so messed up... Like the whole design and all that. The buttons, options, etc, I JUST HATE IT... SEE THIS VIDEO its AWESOME!!!! Also I frequently have to mess around with drivers in windows both when setting it up and also when something needs updating/fixing. I have NEVER done ANYTHING related to drivers under any installation of Ubuntu ever, and I'd guess it's the same for the majority of Linux distros geared towards consumers. Yes, PC games are made for windows, but I was trying to do a completely unbiased ordering which means that I was ignoring all of the crap about third-party compatibility and judging the operating systems themselves. Also, you hate Macs because you're used to Windows, although I must admit I really don't like docks at all and the way they do certain things (mostly talking about the dynamic top bar or whatever the actual mac term for it is). Maybe more, but I don't have quiet enough experience with actually messing around in snow leopard/whatever to judge.
Ярополк Пономарёв
Windows 7 is the best. I also run SEVERAL open-source (everything can be tweaked) OSes so I can do what I want. Microsoft needs an open-source (not gonna repeat myself) Win7 for system builders and programmers like me.
