In the Sinnoh Region, Team Shadow has taken control. The trainers are mind-slaves, the Pokémon forced into labour, and all is chaos. Seismic activity has changed the landscape in some areas – Mt. Coronet has been crushed into the earth, creating a fissure spanning the peak to near Snowpoint City, and Full Moon, New Moon and Iron Islands have merged to form a new island. However, some have taken refuge – mostly legendaries – in a new-formed mountain on the merged islands, now named Refuge Island, ruled over by Azelf, Uxie and Mesprit.

R&R! Please tell me what you think!
Phoenix stared at the faces of his family. Mum, Dad, even his annoying little brother Jacob. Right now, he thought they were the best people in Australia.
He tore his gaze from them to look at the reason for his amazement in his hands. A brand new copy of Pokémon Platinum, the newest game in the series, only a day after it hit the shelves. Laying on top of it, a deep-blue sapphire pendant on a slender silver chain.
‘Thank you,’ he said simply in his as-yet-to-mature thirteen-year-old voice.
His family gazed back at him, seated on the sofas in their living room, two soft dual-seated recliners arranged in a triangle formation with a forty-two-inch flat screen television. They said nothing, but simply looked with love and friendship in their eyes. When it became apparent that they would not say anything further, he disappeared to his room to fetch his Nintendo DS and try the new game.
As he walked to his room, he managed with difficulty to fasten the pendant around his neck, with the jewel residing just below his collar bone.
Phoenix near ripped the game case getting the chip out and plugging it into his DS. He flicked the small switch at the side that started it up and sat back in excitement. He lay on his bed as the title screen started showing, and started a new file on the game.
He would be at this for a while, he knew.

Rhyperior walked down the corridor in the underground of Refuge Island, wondering what the triplets were up to now. It’s always something, he thought bitterly. If they’re not trying to free all Pokémon, they’re trying to make life hell for the trainers.
He drew near to the chamber in which the Guardians of the Lake resided, his solid-rock feet thumping in the still air of the mountain base.
Whispered voices came to him from the cavern ahead. As he drew into the chamber, the voices stopped, to be replaced by one.
‘Welcome, Rhyperior,’ intoned Azelf. ‘Our thanks for responding to our summons.’
‘Cut the crap, Azelf. Why do you want me?’ Rhyperior’s tone was snippy, irritable.
‘We have made a decision,’ Uxie instead replied. ‘We have decided to contact and transport one human from another dimension.’
‘He will be destined to defeat the Shadow plaguing this land, and most likely the others,’ continued Mesprit. ‘We just need one more with psychic abilities...’
Rhyperior sighed. He knew what they suggested, and they knew as well as he that it wasn’t going to work. ‘I’ll go find Cresselia,’ he sighed.

Cresselia was, as always, arguing with Darkrai about some small matter in the Legendary common room, which, by normal rules, Rhyperior wouldn’t be allowed in. His presence attracted curious, suspicious, and in some, openly hostile looks.
Uncomfortable with the attention, Rhyperior simply decided to bellow at the Psychic Pokémon from the other side of the Dugtrio-dug chamber.
‘Cresselia! By order of the trio, I need to talk to you!’ Everyone jumped at the loud voice of the Rhyhorn evolution, “to you” echoing off the walls. Cresselia looked faintly annoyed, but also curious, as she floated over.
‘What? And what are you even doing here?’ she said in her superior attitude. ‘Just because you’re the trio’s messenger doesn’t mean you can barge in here whenever you want.’
‘Shut it. I’m not in the mood either,’ retorted Rhyperior. Then he braced himself and sighed. ‘Remember that conversation, about a week ago, when I was present and you had a talk with the trio about our... problem?’ he said a bit softer.
‘Is it...? No. The answer was no then, and still is no.’ Even after a week, she remained adamant about bringing in outside help. ‘The last time we tried trans-dimensional activity with them, it resulted in Giratina, remember? And there’s no telling if he won’t just go to their side.’
Even without being a Psychic Pokémon, Rhyperior knew she wouldn’t sway easily. He also knew that the trio wouldn’t let him or Cresselia go if he failed. He tried a different tact.
‘Darkrai!’ he called out. ‘Wanna bunk with Cresselia?’
His answering grin was openly malicious. ‘You have no idea how much she would hate that,’ he said in a barely audible voice.
Cresselia gasped. ‘That’s blackmail!’ she exclaimed.
‘Of course it is. So do you want to buck with the mortal enemy–’ He indicated Darkrai, ‘–or cooperate with the trio?’
The Lunar Pokémon sighed, defeated. ‘Fine. Take me to them.’
Rhyperior was about to leave with Cresselia in tow before he remembered his offer. ‘Sorry Darkrai!’ he yelled again. ‘Offer’s off.’
He looked genuinely disappointed.

Cresselia looked, as always, slightly superior, but this was tinged with apprehension, frustration and some respect as she and Rhyperior entered the cavern housing the trio. She glanced at Uxie and Mesprit before floating towards Azelf.
‘Okay, fine. I’ll do it. He managed to... persuade me.’ She shot a look of pure venom at Rhyperior – odd, considering she was a Psychic type.
‘Our thanks, Rhyperior. You may depart.’
He said nothing, looking coldly at the four others, before clomping down the tunnel, muttering “about time” as he went.
Azelf turned back to Cresselia. ‘Now, Cresselia–‘
She cut him off. ‘Please don’t talk. This is annoying enough already. Let’s just do it.’
The trio exchanged glances, before nodding first to each other and then to Cresselia. ‘Then,’ they said in harmony, ‘let us begin.’

Phoenix was still glued to the game. It was ten-o’clock the same day he got it, and had only taken two breaks; one for dinner, one for the toilet. His parents had been hassling him all day to get off it, but, he admitted ruefully, he was addicted.
He was already battling Wake in Pastoria City, with several level-high-twenty Pokémon and a level thirty-four Torterra.
Just as he was delivering the final blow, his game froze between two attacks, a Razor Leaf of still pixels on the screen. Funny thing was that the colours had been reversed – the green was purple, the grey even darker. ‘No... NO!’ he screamed in frustration – he had saved last before he even began the gym.
He could dimly hear his family running towards him, thinking something horrible had happened.
He realised that his screen had faded to white, and was then changing towards a dull purple. Entranced, he peered closer at his screen. The deep purple – nearly blue – suddenly flashed bright red, then returned to blue. As his mum reached his door, the screen flashed red again, then blue. It started doing strobe colours, red-blue-red-blue– then settled on orange, before Phoenix’s vision went black.
He knew without knowing that he blacked out or suffered a seizure, but the last thing he did know was his parents trying to shake him awake, before– nothing.

Cresselia stared at the human in their midst. ‘I want you to know,’ she warned, ‘that I did not do this intentionally. I have no blame to take if this doesn’t work.’
‘Calm, Cresselia. This will work. It is his destiny,’ assured Azelf.
He didn’t look the traitorous, evil sort. Soft brown hair, piercing blue eyes, slight body. Not that Cresselia would’ve known this by herself; she simply picked up the thoughts from his dreams.
The human started stirring from unconsciousness. As he shook his head, Cresselia saw the sapphire on his chest and gasped. He has the Sea Pendant! But... that hasn’t been seen for millennia, she thought. No wonder. It was in the human world all this time.
He sat up blinking at the Psychic Pokémon, first at the trio, then at Cresselia.
His head must have cleared about then, because his eyes suddenly went wide, narrowed in suspicion, then widened again, talking to himself the whole time. The Legendaries simply floated and waited.
‘Chatterbox, isn’t he?’ Uxie remarked.
‘One of the trio with a sense of humour? That’s something new,’ retorted Cresselia.
‘Who... who are you?’ the human asked in apprehension.
‘Pokémon, of course. What else would we be?’ answered Mesprit – in his thoughts.
The human’s eyes went even wider, if it were possible. He almost resembled a Noctowl.
‘But I’m– you’re not– this–’ he gibbered. ‘...how? You’re not real...’
‘Oh, no, we’re quite real in our world,’ chuckled Azelf. ‘Your world thinks we’re not, is all.’
‘Then... Azelf– Uxie– Mesprit– Cresselia–’ he stammered, pointing to each in turn. ‘Sorry I made you faint,’ he said to Azelf.
He looked confused. ‘What? Oh– no. Your “games” are not connected to our world.’
‘Then–’
‘Come with me,’ Cresselia cut him off. ‘I’ll take you to your room and let you meet a few Pokémon.’

Phoenix saw many different Pokémon as he walked behind the Lunar Pokémon, most of which he had never even heard of – being new to the fourth generation – but some, he had even captured in-game. There were Infernape taking care of their young, a herd of Miltank, and, according to Cresselia, there was a massive underground lake that housed Seaking and the mysterious Kyogre. Golem and Machamp threw boulders at each other, occasionally Geodude as well. Hitmonlee, Hitmonchan and Hitmontop were all trading blows in another cavern.
Phoenix’s eyes could barely take in all this, so they just remain two luminous orbs as he and Cresselia travelled to where the human would stay.
Most of the looks he attracted were fear, anger and hatred, some charging up to him in an attempt to frighten him (which worked), but one particularly bold Eevee scampered up to him and smiled before its mother, an elderly Flareon, growled and took it away. It still continued to stare at Phoenix, and Phoenix at it, though.
‘And this,’ Cresselia said, shaking Phoenix out of his reverie, ‘is your room.’
It was plain enough, a moderately-sized room about twice as big as the Lunar Pokémon, with a straw mat in the middle. Phoenix easily compared it to a bed from the Mystery Dungeon series.
‘Thank you,’ he said.
‘Don’t mention it,’ Cresselia sniffed. ‘Meet the trio tomorrow morning. They will give you your task.’
‘Task?’
Cresselia glared at him. ‘Don’t ask so many questions. I’m starting to get a headache from bringing you here, and I don’t handle headaches well.’
She floated out of the room, leaving Phoenix alone. Realising he was suddenly tired and emotionally exhausted, he padded over to the bed and promptly fell asleep.
