I was gonna cover this later but I'll do a short version here(expect a better written version in my guide.)

The best footage to edit is lossless codecs(you don't need to know a lot about this.) generally as an .avi.

So what you need is two programs.

Lagarith lossless codec So you can create the best footage to edit with and cause you the least amount of problems. Scroll down and select 'Lagarith Installer (v1.3.20)'

Virtual Dub (Doesn't matter what your OS is download x86 version. 32-bit more stable.) Scroll down and select 'Download V1.9.11 (x86 / 32-bit) release build (VirtualDub-1.9.11.zip)'. This will be used to convert your videos to .avi

Once both downloaded and installed look for and open up virtual dub. Once virtualdub is open click File>Open Video File. Set "Files of Types" to "All Files" and than search for your footage on your computer. Once that is done we're gonna change 1 thing in the options menu

go to video > Compression and select "Lagarith lossless codec". Now before you go and render your file there is one thing I recommend you do. This is going to be a really big file. If you were to render it a 23 minute video would be 90 GB. So that's not what you're gonna do.

Using the seeker look through the video for clips you're gonna use, once you find it, go to the beginning of that clip and select the left black bold arrow. (It will be all the way to the right by itself with 2 buttons. A left arrow and a right arrow next to "frames). This will select the beginning of that clip, now go to the end of the clip you want to render and select the right arrow. Now that you have selected your clip go to "File > Save as AVI".

Of course if you don't want to do this or your video quality was never good in the first place go back to Video > Compression and leave it as (Uncompressed) and simply render(File > Save as AVI) the whole thing.

If this doesn't make sense I will right more indepth and clear guide(WITH PICTURES!) on how to do it in my AMV guide in the tutorial section.

Okay. Getting Sony Vegas to even READ the video files is doing my head in now. At first, they were MKV files, which I just didn't even know about. I managed to tear those apart and get some .h264 file or something which I think is a video file, but now I'm having to get some jank called AVS Video Converter to make that into a more readable format.

WHY COULDN'T IT JUST HAVE AN OPEN BUTTON QQ

Yea MKVs are evil I've never managed to find a decent convert.
MP4 to AVI - Automen now that is very good for using for conversion I happen to have the full version and the best settings provided by a very good friend of mine if you're interested (PM)

I'm downloading this DivX software jank that might help. It claims to have codecs AND converters. I might just give up on this if this one doesn't work .-.

<3 I think it works.

Now to download 12 more episodes. Then make an AMV. It's a start.

never edit with DivX/XviD footage. That's probably why it didn't work with vegas.

Why not? .-.

Either way, the DivX codes finally let me load this .avi file, so I can start making this over the weekend.

well congrats but warning DivX can be really annoying to edit with. If you give me 20 minutes I'll tell you how to edit with your .mkv clips if you haven't thrown it out.

Guide updated to show you how to work with Virtual dub and AVISynth to use .mkv files.
