Sotos
Well, I use gimp (I know there are better spriting programs, but I'm familiar with this one) and I have never done a single Pokemon sprite. I think I generally got the idea, excpt for the coloring. How can I recolor a sprite in gimp? inb4brush - I asked "how"...
Ovedrive
Use MS Paint for making sprites. The best way you learn is to watch/see Japio's tutorial. It's stickied in the Tutorials Sub-Forum. It's pretty simple and it's easy to learn.
-:=Brandon=:-
Erasor tool, well, for paint anyway. Might work with gimp, make the colour what you're changing to the secondary, and colour you're changing from as primary. Then you right click with the erasor tool.
