Floyd.
So a couple of years ago this new book came out "Twilight" all the girls at my school were raving about it and my girlfriend was intent on me reading it, so I thought, fair enough if there is this much rave about it I might as well read it. So I did read it and you know what it was god damn awful, the plot line was solid I will give Stephanie Mayer that (or whatever her name is) and she knew how to capture young girls attention I will also give her that. In my opinion this was more of a strategic book, she knew who her god-damn target audience was and she aimed at them and made hundreds of thousands off of the book. Later on it was decided that the book be turned into a film and now she had made millions off the series. What I won't give her is her vocabulary and her ability to paint a picture in your mind, to me she cannot do that to save her life, the dialogue was scripted like a bad porno and I would have found more adjectives from someone completely illiterate. Then a new book came out "New Moon" now, this is the book I am going to talk to you about most today. It introduced a new aspect of the book, werewolves, this I found quite intriguing. The general plot of the book was Jasper had attacked Bella and he was afraid something like that would happen again so he moves away, see, a solid romance plot line here. Leaving her in Jacob Black's care a soon to be werewolf or as you later find out he is actually a shape-shifter but this book became more and more like a badly-described thrilling plot line drama!. I will tell you now that Stephanie did attempt to describe everything, she just didn't do it very well. Now, with Edward gone Bella finds comfort in Jacob who then becomes a romantic interest for her and a new priceless asset in this saga, promising to never hurt her he breaks up with her after discovering he is a werewolf, he tells her to "go home and don't come back, otherwise you're going to get hurt". Apologising to her sometime later he asks her to remember the story he told to her while they were at the beach in the first book "Twilight", remembering in a dream that he had told her that his tribe is known to be the descendent's of wolves or something of the sort she goes to his home looking for him. Seeing out of the window the pack while Jacob sleeps, she confronts the members, after some words are exchanged one of the wolf members agitates Bella, slapping him across the face he begins to change into a wolf, Jacob (having woken up) sees this runs out the house transforming into a wolf and begins to exchange blows with the other pack member. New moon is a gripping book and I would recommend reading if not watching it. It certainly lacks some qualities other books strive in, however, you will enjoy it after Edward leaves, trust me! ;D

Cin
^ That is just a pointless post. This book series is probably aimed at a younger age group than I am, however I steer clear mainly because of the teenage girl fanbase (even my 22 year old friend) which means far too much romance which I'm not a fan of, I didn't mind it in Charlaine Harris' Sookie Stackhouse series where at one point there was a love triangle involving a WereTiger (Quinn), a Vampire (Eric) and a Human (Sookie). Films never compare to the books I'm used to hearing that from my friend when she drags me to Harry Potter films (it's why I've given TrueBlood a wide birth). We do actually have a topic already on Twilight however, but it at times teetered on flame war.
Mehmani
Films suffer from appalling acting and awful scripts and the books are written badly. I've only read the first one, and that was absolutely terrible. But hey, in a series of books that is so terrible the things that aren't as terrible seem really special, don't they? Merci
I'm going to guess that I'm the only male fan of Twilight on the entire website. I've read the books and seen the movies. The movies are actually better than one thinks it is. It was reviewed as a 'threequel that actually works' and stuff. Although I doubt the last movie can catch up with the first three. EliminateHRN
@Merciful Idiot, I'm a male and a fan of Twilight. So you're not alone. I don't understand why everyone hates Twilight, I think it's a great book. The movies are pretty good, but defiantly ain't better than the books. I like Twilight. Zeppeli Gyro Supreme
I would not outright say I hate Twilight, but I do not like it in the slightest. It's a book that distorts the original image of vampires and werewolves and turns them into something mushy, dull, and unappealing to most fans. It basically takes everything that was cool and known about vampires and tosses them out the window. Then there's also the fanatics who ruin it. All they want to talk about is how amazing _______ is and how _________ is __________. And then they accept the vampires in the book for what vampires are and should be. I had an argument with 2 people who thought that vampires aren't what they are in older media just because of this book, which is annoying as all Hades. And they always try to push how "awesome" it is on other people.

Well there's someone else's opinion to never take seriously ever again.

I just like when the author has their own twist to things, and not keep it exactly like everyone else. If I had to pick one thing I hated about Twilight, it has to be the Twi-hards. Cin
People perceive Twilight Vampires as too tame and they probably are. People are used to seeing them as 'evil' blood thirsty and if they aren't they still expect them to show a bloody nature somewhere, its the very vampire being. The very myths behind them, that all stemmed mainly because of people seeing a decomposing corpse and not understanding bloody mouths, 'growing' hair and nails and swelling is natural thing for the body to do during the process. Different is good, but it must be within reason and pushing Vampires from typical a gothic thing to a teenage girl thing is bound to protested against. Tentacruel
Finally, someone who understands. Twilight is a strategic marketing ploy. Rather than write something good, write something people will like for other reasons. It's kinda like fanfiction.
Except unlike most bad fanfiction it isn't rotting on fanfiction.net like it should be. Twilight is a massive marketing ploy aimed at lonely teenage girls who want a free fantasy. And they really do lap it up. No girls in my school like Twilight, and seeing as its only real use for men is as a ploy to pick up girls I see no use for it. I have read it so I can provide first-hand opinions of the book, but for no reason other than that. I'm camp and rather flamboyant, and as someone who happens to be slightly bi-curious it still doesn't appeal to me. Gay men don't like Twilight.
Anyone who hates the vampires bcas tehre sparkly needs to do a bit more thinking. All it is is an unnecessary detail, and as us writers know, anything unnecessary damages the story. The problem isn't even that the vampires aren't 'evil'. The romance of vampire and human is fascinating because it is a predator-prey relationship. Love may be present, or it may not, but the vampire's two-fold desires of romance and hunger are what spin the story. It creates a wondrous paradox: the vampire's lover is something he wants nothing more than to kill, but also is something he would do anything to protect. In attempting to tackle it, an author is trying to put Stockholm's Syndrome into words and multiply it a thousand times over. The only reason I haven't done it yet is because I'm not sure if I can. And that is why Twilight is bad.
.Starrk
I honestly don't see a problem with anything in the Twilight franchise. All I see is that it doesn't appeal to the male audience much, being that it was made to attract the female audience, or that the vampires sparkle in sunlight. Hydra of Ages
None of the characters in Twilight are remotely interesting in the slightest. The rest of the book is window dressing; when you have a romance based around characters with the emotional depth of cardboard, you can call that a bad book.
