The guys from Two Knights and father figure have started a new band. Not everyones cup of tea, but I love this kind of stuff.

Both bands sound great, I've been digging a lot of skramz lately (if my avi is any indication) so thanks~

I've got envy playing right now.

Nice, I remember a couple of years ago when I discovered this thread. Our music taste seems to have matured at the same rate.

And having a name that's a Converge song is rad. Just saying.

Have some more, mate.

Reminds me to City of Caterpillar, in the beginning at least. Good stuff.

Wow, this is brand new. Definitely a unique sound, though I think I can guess the inspiration for their name...

Yea, Supernatural's skramz thread definitely lit the fire that got me into the genre. Circle Takes the Square and Orchid were my introductions to skramz, still two of my favorites.

Converge is one of my favorite bands in general, and the name seemed fitting. Much better than my last one in my opinion haha.

Damn, well that was definitely different, cool to listen to though. Also on a totally unrelated side of things, your sig makes me laugh so hard

I think everyone's taste in music changes quite a bit overtime.

Speaking of Circle Takes The Square they uploaded their album onto bandcamp for free and I decided to get it there, and man do I ever love that album. Definitely gonna get a physical copy when I can. I should check out some more Skramz, seems like good stuff.

Orchid is definitely a good place to look since you've taken a liking to more extreme stuff like Pig Destroyer (Orchid actually did a split with them). Their albums are all incredibly short so they're a quick listen, albeit a great one.

City of Caterpillar is also great, they have a heavy post-rock influence mixed in with their screamo tendencies.

Listened to Chaos Is Me, it is a great album. I'll have to check out City of Caterpillar sometime, it seems interesting

Yup, good choice for new listeners. Circle Takes The Square, Orchid and City Of Caterpillar are what people would recommend as they are the "gateway" band for skramz in general.

Other good band for new listeners: Off Minor, Capsule, Gospel, Houston We Have a Problem, Men as Trees, Saetia, PG.99, 1994!, Snowing and Raein.

Wouldn't say Snowing is screamo, but they're awesome anyways. Everybody should check out their split with Algernon Cadwallader, Boys & Sex and 1994!.

On another note; the first skramz song I ever heard (I probably heard some iwrotehaikusaboutcannibalisminyouryearbook before that, but it's the first song that stuck in my head):

Yeah they're more of an emo band but skramz is the general term to describe both emo and screamo without confusing with stereotypical scene/mall emo bands.

Umm..I'm curious of what skramz band you think are suitable for newbies to get into the genre.

Alright, so I'm now the vocalist for the band I'm in (called For Retaliations, if anyone's curious). They were looking for a vocalist, and I was chosen only because of my never-ending confidence. Everyone else has already practiced and prepared, so the only one left is me. Since I'm new, I haven't really memorized the lines yet, and it's made worse by the fact that while I sing on-stage a lot, I haven't really sung in a metalcore voice before. It's a little embarrassing, but I can work with it. Once I'm ready, we're gonna perform, but until then...

Well, I have to learn how to sing harsh.

I can do it, but it quickly tires me, and apparently I'm not loud enough even with a mike. A vocalist from another band (formerly metalcore too, not anymore) gave me the advice to cut a lemon in half and keep the juices above my throat for about a minute, which he said will soften the strain and help me scream at full power. But this isn't what I've learned from the internet, which have told me that acidic juices only worsen your throat.

Should I follow his advice, or should I do something else? Also, the band's hoping to perform in about three more weeks. Would that be enough time to master the voice?

Three weeks is plenty of time. I was the vocalist of a black metal band all throughout high school, so I'm relatively familiar with harsh vocals. I've never heard about the lemon thing, but I would often drink water and soda while practicing/performing. The water will help soothe your throat so it doesn't get sore while screaming. The soda, at least for me, would give the saliva towards the back of my throat this kind of sticky feeling, which resulted in really raspy/gargly vocals. It helped me achieve the sound I wanted without straining my vocal chords and throat too much.

Just make sure that you scream using your diaphragm. From the sound of it, you're screaming from your throat and vocal chords alone. That'll cause your "screams" to come out around the volume of a speaking voice and not really a scream (not to mention, it'll wear our your throat quicker and damage your voice). Make sure you're bringing up air from your diaphragm; it'll help raise the volume of your screams. It sounds a bit confusing, but just imagine you're about to yell really loudly. Take a deep breath, and let the screams out. :P

It's all about practice. Don't wear yourself out, but practice a few times daily--even if that means just screaming to yourself in the shower or something while no one else is around. That's how I learned. Just remember that pain is typically nature's way of telling you that you're doing something wrong. Vocalists didn't learn their techniques from a text book. Just practice different techniques until you find one that is comfortable for you and produces the sound you're looking for. Good luck!

I'm not sure, it depends on what you listened to before, I guess. I listened to a lot of crust punk, so it wasn't really that far off from skramz. Some people only listen to La Dispute. They're a good band, but I think their fans should branch out a bit more.

Water is better for you than anything else, it's all I drink when I'm doing vocals whether it be singing or harsh.

You really just employ the same breathing tactics as you would when singing, but with a different output. Quick, deep breaths, with your mouth wide in a shape that would make an "oo" sound were you to make noise. Having your hand on your stomach while you breath is a good way to make sure the air is going to the right place.
